Dressel 20 globular amphorae from Baetica usually preserve different types of inscriptions, among which the best known are ante cocturam graffiti, stamps, painted inscriptions (tituli picti) and post cocturam graffiti.2 All were added at different times by different hands using diverse writing techniques. Their purpose had to do with each of the stages in the life cycle of these olive oil amphorae: the manufacture of the pottery object, its filling with olive oil, its marketing, transportation and distribution, sale and consumption, and finally, its possible reuse for a completely different purpose.

W pamiętniku Cezara „O wojnie galijskiej”  (łac. Commentarii de bello Gallico), opisującym 9 lat wojen galijskich (58-50 p.n.e.), czytamy o wielu nazwach i ugrupowaniach plemiennych oraz o informacjach geograficznych, które wykorzystywano do rekonstrukcji obrazu antycznej Galii i Germanii. Problem w tym, że łacińskie transliteracje lokalnych nazw pozostawiają wiele do życzenia, a językoznawcy głowią się nad ich pochodzeniem. Niestety w tych zabiegach pomijają oni w ogóle możliwość ich wendyjskiej (prasłowiańskiej) etymologii, gdyż przyjmują bezmyślnie fałszywy paradygmat naukowy, że Wędów / Wendów (Prasłowian) wówczas nie było na tych terenach. Zapominają też przy tym o obecności Wenetów w Armoryce i Brytanii, którzy bezsprzecznie byli związanie z Wendami.

W tym krótkim opracowaniu staram się przekazać najważniejsze informacje z pamiętników Cezara o wojnie z Galami, Brytami, jak i Germanami, którzy często angażowali się w lokalne potyczki za lewym brzegiem Renu, stając po różnych stronach konfliktu. Bacznie przyglądam się też możliwym źródłosłowom poszczególnych nazw własnych i miejscowych podawanym przez Cezara. Dostrzegam w nich wendyjskie korzenie, co może wydać się szokujące po pierwszym czytaniu. Mam nadzieję, jednak, że po bliższym zapoznaniu się z faktami i przedstawioną przeze mnie argumentacją, niektóre propozycje etymologii wydadzą się przekonujące.

Macedonians have emerged from the substratum of prehistoric tribes belonging to the huge family of Pelasgians, Aeols/Boreans  and Hyperboreans (Anti, Brygii, Danuni, Kiti, Hittiti, Lapiti, Macedoni, Minyi, Misiani, Mosiniki, Pelasgi, Pelagoni, Paioni, Tiroi, Tyrseni, etc.) that lived and contributed the creation of archetypical cultures of the second millennium BCE in the central regions of Macedonian Peninsula and Asia Minor.  During their migrations these ancestral Aryan-Macedonic tribes brought with them their culture and contributed to the creation of the civilization centers in antiquity,  especially in the region of lower Danube and further toward Ukraine/Russia (as 'Aryans') and in Central Europe (as 'Veneti' and/or 'Gaul'). 
As a result of the progressive expansion of the early Macedonians during the archaic period all the other regional tribes fused together into a larger union of Macedonians. At the beginning the Orestians (modern Mkd. Gorani; Eng. 'highlanders', mountainers)  from Argo (today Kostur region, Aegean Macedonia) in western Lower Macedonia, together with other neighboring Macedonic tribes living in Eordaia, Elimeia (Kožani and Grevena), northern Timfaia (Hasia), Lynkestia, Desaretia (Lerin-Prespa-Ohrid region), Elimiotia, Pelagonia and Paionia (in Upper Macedonia) began to form the Macedonian state, the first entity of that kind and extent on the European soil.

One of the most studied and discussed aspects of the Magna Mater cult is the ceremonial sacrifice known as taurobolium. Despite the considerable evidence of this ritual, doubts still remain among scholars and many interpretations have been given through the decades. For example, not only its public or private nature is a matter of debate, but also its formal features. In this article, I tackle some of the arguments carried out so far, through a closer analysis of the archaeological remains, in order to better understand the historical development, social value, and religious function of the taurobolium. I mostly focus on the Gallic Provinces, from the second half of the 2nd century until the last decade of the 3rd century, as this region is a valuable archive of monumental and epigraphical evidence about the ritual. I describe how the taurobolium was celebrated, by whom, and for what purpose, eventually demonstrating how it was an efficient means of political and religious contact between the central power and the provincial periphery.

For know the controversial history of the Druids in the Celtic world, will investigate the sources of its origin, through stories of classic texts and medieval legends of Gaul, Britain and Ireland. His role in Celtic society surpassed the religious sphere, covering war, politics, medicine and the law. Almost unknown is the participation of women in this institution.

Résumé. Les maisons à péristyle n’étaient pas simplement le type d’habitat le plus riche rencontré dans les villes romaines, mais aussi un élément du modèle de gouvernement des provinces mis en place par Rome. Leur possession devait en effet constituer une obligation pour les membres les plus éminents des élites municipales qui briguaient ou détenaient le pouvoir. Leur étude sous un angle privilégiant les parties publiques plutôt que les parties plus purement privées permet de montrer la validité pour la Gaule des modèles domestiques élaborés à Rome et la progressive intégration des Gallo-Romains aux schémas mentaux du nouveau pouvoir. Si l’exemple gaulois met en évidence de nombreux points communs avec les modèles italiques, il fait également apparaître des particularités qui sont souvent moins des provincialismes que le signe d’une évolution générale de l’usage de ces maisons dans l’Empire sous l’effet des événements historiques et des mutations des classes dirigeantes. Du fait de ses liens étroits avec le monde du pouvoir et du cadre urbain dans lequel celui-ci s’exerce, ce type d’habitat occupait une place particulière dans la ville et son existence a suivi le destin de ses élites. Apparu partout avec la naissance des villes à l’époque augustéenne, il a massivement disparu dans le courant du IIIe s.

Abstract. The peristyle house was not only the most sumptuous dwelling, but also a model of government in the provinces established by Rome. Their ownership constituted an obligation for the most prominent members of the elite who solicited or held power. A study from an angle giving more importance to the public sector rather than a purely private side, enables one to to show the validity, in Gaul, of the domestic model developed in Rome and the progressive integration of Gallo-Romans in the mental scheme of the new power. If the Gallic example underlines a fair number of common points with Italic models, it also shows some particularities. These must often be considered less as provincialisms than the sign of a general evolution, under the Principate, of the use of these houses under the influence of historical events and changes inside ruling classes. Due to its strong connection with the world of power and the urban frame of its exercise, this kind of housing held a special position inside the town and its existence followed the destiny of its elites. Appearing everywhere at the birth of towns during the Augustan period, it disappeared massively in the course of the 3rd century.

Le fromage est, parmi les produits laitiers, un élément essentiel de l’alimentation dans toutes les sociétés préindustrielles. Après un rappel de la technologie laitière, la documentation – essentiellement archéologique – concernant les Gaules, les Germanies et les provinces Alpines est examinée en détail, pour l’âge du Fer et la période romaine, en se fondant largement sur la chaîne opératoire de la production de fromage. Puis les données acquises pour ces provinces sont mises en perspective avec l’ensemble du monde antique, grec et romain, cette fois à travers des données surtout textuelles, épigraphiques et iconographiques. La place de la Gaule dans ce tableau peut ainsi être considérée comme fort honorable, révélant – par les faisselles en terre cuite – des régions productrices auparavant insoupçonnées, mais aussi des vides, que l’on tente d’expliquer.

"The volume contains a detailed study of the pottery finds from the Hungarian excavations of the "Grandes Forges" insula. The insula is located in the heart of the celtic oppidum of Bibracte (Le Mont Beuvray, Burgundy, France). The primary aim of this work is not only to study and to publish the pottery finds of the different occupation layers but also to make a contribution to the results of the already existing ceramic studies of the oppidum. It creates a chronology for the  "Grandes Forges" insula, which is an  archeological site of great importance where the remains of the roman basilica of Bibracte have been found. Finally it tries to give a better understanding of the chronology of the site of Bibracte and provides a survey of the pottery finds of the oppidum.


Notre livre comporte l’étude du mobilier céramique provenant des fouilles hongroises de l’Îlot des Grandes Forges à l’oppidum gaulois de Bibracte (Le Mont Beuvray, Bourgogne). Le but de notre travail était non seulement de traiter et de publier le mobilier céramique provenant des différents états d’occupation de l’Îlot des Grandes Forges, mais aussi de compléter les études céramologiques qui s’occupent de l’oppidum de Bibracte. Nous proposons une chronologie bien établie pour l’Îlot des Grandes Forges, chantier d’importance remarquable qui a livré l’une des constructions les plus étonnantes du site: la basilique de Bibracte. Et finalement, le travail constitue une contribution à la compréhension plus approfondie de la chronologie de l’oppidum, ainsi qu’à la définition des faciès céramologiques de Bibracte.

A small number of stamps on Mica-dusted Ware were recorded from Gallia Belgica, Germania superior, Germania inferior and Britannia. Both anepigraphic stamps and name stamps appear on a small range of beakers, bowls and dishes. Certain fabrics and chemical groups were distinguished, but only one workshop producing stamped vessels is known. The majority of the stamped vessels were in use from Flavian times to the early 2 nd century. Some of the workshops were involved in organized long distance trade, while others only supplied locally.

En Celtique méditerranéenne, l’analyse des habitats et des territoires de l’âge du Fer, des sépultures et des sanctuaires,
des représentations sculptées et des biens de prestige, permet d’appréhender l’évolution des structurations sociales. Aux
communautés peu hiérarchisées de la fin de l’âge du Bronze et du début de l’âge du Fer, semblent succéder un système
patriarcal et matrilinéaire dont la légende de la fondation de Marseille donne une lecture assez précise. Si l’essor de la cité
phocéenne, dont l’économie domine la Méditerranée nord-occidentale durant l’ âge du Fer, semble être contemporain
du renforcement du système aristocratique indigène en Provence et dans la basse-vallée du Rhône, en Languedoc méditerranéen
–en revanche– le développement de l’économie commerciale est favorable à la mise en place d’un système
ploutocratique dont le comptoir fluvio-lagunaire de Lattes parait être une bonne illustration.

Abstract
In Mediterranean Gaul, the analysis of the Iron Age settlements and territories, as well as graves, shrines, carved
representations and prestige goods allow us to understand the evolution of social structures. Early Protohistoric communities
of the Late Bronze Age and the Early Iron Age were hardly hierarchized. These small scale communities were later
replaced by patriarchal and matrilineal systems, which are well illustrated in the legend of “Marseilles foundation”. The
development of the Greek city, whose economy dominated the western Mediterranean during the Iron Age, seems to
have gone hand in hand with the strengthening of the contemporary aristocratic Celtic system in Provence and the lower
Rhone basin. On the contrary, in Mediterranean Languedoc the development of a commercial economy favoured the rise
of a plutocratic system, as attested in the port town of Lattes.

In this contribution we want to address two aspects of architectural decoration relating to the forms that spread in Gaul and Hispania, in particular in Narbonensis and Tarraconensis between the first century BC. and the II d. C ..
The first aspect concerns the sharing between the two provinces of late republican decorative forms and traditions of Italic origin - v. the Corinthian and Ionic Italic capitals and the influence they had on local productions: they were brought by elements of the populations who arrived from Italy and in particular from Campania and the central-southern area for work reasons, such as producers of wine that we know from the abbreviations on the amphorae to be very frequently of Italian origin, the mercatores, or the soldiers who moved to the two provinces, often as a result of marriage with local women.
The second aspect concerns the decorative fashions inspired by the first and second normalization of the Corinthian capital and the entablature in the Augustan age that affect the two provinces, often coinciding with the foundation of the provincial capitals, of new colonies or new municipalities.
Both the two aspects should not be considered rigidly from a chronological point of view as they are accompanied by the phenomenon of persistence, which is most noticeable, but not only, in the presence of architectural decorations carved in local stones and therefore certainly the work of local workshops.

Si affronta la tematica delle officine che tra il I sec.a.C. e la fine del II sec.d.C. lavorano quasi esclusivamente le pietre locali e sono attive nella decorazione architettonica soprattutto all’interno delle provincie ispaniche e galliche. Vengono presse in considerazione la continuità di tradizione repubblicane e il loro incontro con le nuove mode provenienti da Roma e l’Italia. In particolare ci occuperemo del ruolo che hanno avuto la prima e seconda normalizzazione del capitello corinzio che hanno avuto luogo rispettivamente nell’età del Secondo Triunvirato e in quella pieno augustea nel determinare o modificare le forme architettoniche in uso presso le officine regionali, che utilizzano appunto le pietre locali e non i marmi. I centri di cui ci occuperemo nel testo si trovano soprattutto nella Tarraconense, nella Betica, nella Narbonense, nell’Aquitania e nella Gallia Belgica, con riferimenti ai percorsi e ai collegamenti con le città principali delle provincie, in genere affacciate sul mare.

Se afronta el análisis de los talleres que entre el siglo I a.C. y finales del siglo II d.C. trabajaron casi exclusivamente con piedras locales y que participaron activamente en la decoración arquitectónica, especialmente de las provincias hispanas y galas. Se toma en consideración la continuidad de las tradiciones republicanas y su encuentro con las nuevas modas procedentes de Roma e Italia. En particular, nos ocuparemos del papel que jugaron la primera y la segunda normalización del capitel corintio, que tuvieron lugar respectivamente en la época del Segundo Triunvirato y medioaugustea,
en la determinación o modificación de las formas arquitectónicas en uso por los talleres regionales, que utilizan de hecho las piedras locales y no los mármoles. Los centros de los que nos ocuparemos se encuentran principalmente en la Tarraconense, en la Bética, en la Narbonense, en la Aquitania y en la Galia Bélgica, sin perder de vista las rutas y conexiones de estos centros con las principales ciudades de las provincias, generalmente situadas en la costa.

Die Basilika von Bibracte – Ein frühes Zeugnis römischer Architektur in Zentralgallien

1988 begonnene Ausgrabungen der Universität Eötvös Loránd aus Budapest im Bereich der »Pâture du Couvent«
machen die Untersuchung der Hauptverkehrsachse von Bibracte möglich. Untersuchungen seit 1996 im Innern des an
diesem Weg gelegenen »îlot des Grandes Forges« haben ein großes augusteisches Gebäude zu Tage gebracht, dessen
Grundriss einem domus entspricht. Seit 2000 wurden die Forschungen auf die Vorgängerphasen des domus hin ausgerichtet
und brachten eine spätrepublikanische Basilika mit innerem Peristyl und äußeren Umgang zum Vorschein.
Zusammen mit einem kleinen, rechteckigen Forum bildet sie ein Ensemble, dessen seitliche anschließende Wände der
Basilika in einer nördlichen und südlichen Portikus übergehen. Die Keramikfunde lassen eine Datierungsspanne zwischen
50 und 30 v.Chr. zu. Mit der Basilika von Bibracte findet sich also im Innern Galliens einen italischer Grundriss
– nachweislich aus der Zeit vor Vitruv – der mit einer Inneneinteilung von 4×8 Säulen vermutlich die Grundlage für die
Entwicklung der vitruvischen Basilika war. Sie ist zur Zeit der früheste gesicherte Nachweis dieses Gebäudetyps in der
westlichen römischen Welt.

The basilica of Bibracte – Early evidence of Roman architecture in Central Gaul

The first result of the excavations undertaken in 1988 by the Eötvös Loránd University of Budapest was the exploration
of the main road of Bibracte in the zone called »Pâture du Couvent«. In 1996 research continued in the centre of the
»l’îlot des Grandes Forges« just next to the eastern side of the road with the excavation of a large building complex
dating to the reign of Augustus. Since 2000 research has focused on the buildings earlier than the domus and a late
Republican basilica with internal porticus and lateral ambulatories has been unearthed. It forms a unit with a joining
small rectangular forum. The study of the ceramic finds suggests a dating for the basilical complex to the period between
50 and 30 B.C. The basilica of Bibracte presents a Roman plan from pre-Vitruvian times in the centre of Gaul
which (with its internal disposition of 4×8 columns) formed the basis for the development of the Vitruvian basilica. At
present the basilica of Bibracte is the earliest known certain evidence of its building type in the western Roman world.

La basilique de Bibracte – Un témoignage précoce de l’architecture romaine en Gaule centrale

Les fouilles commencées en 1988 par l’Université Eötvös Loránd de Budapest dans la zone de la Pâture du Couvent
ont permis d’explorer la voie principale de Bibracte. Les sondages effectués depuis 1996 au coeur de »l’îlot des Grandes
Forges«, à l’est de cette voie, ont abouti à la découverte d’un vaste ensemble augustéen dont le plan correspond à
celui d’une domus. Depuis 2000, les recherches ont été étendues aux occupations antérieures à la domus et ont abouti
à la découverte d’une basilique tardo-républicaine à péristyle interne et déambulatoire périphérique. Elle constitue un
ensemble avec le petit forum carré dont les portiques au nord et au sud prolongent sans interruption les murs des
annexes de la basilique. En ce qui concerne la datation du complexe basilical, l’analyse céramologique propose une
fourchette convaincante entre 50 et 30 av. J.-C. Nécessairement pré-vitruvienne, la basilique de Bibracte avec sa disposition
intérieure (4×8 colonnes), atteste l’apparition en Gaule centrale d’un modèle italique dont la création constituait
probablement la condition préalable pour l’élaboration de la basilique vitruvienne. La basilique de Bibracte constitue
pour l’instant le premier représentant certifié de ce type de bâtiment dans le monde romain occidental.

Se analiza el vuelco que la política romana dio hacia el Atlántico como área de expansión, sobre todo económica, hasta fines del siglo I. La navegación por el océano, más peligrosa que la mediterránea, alcanzó un gran desarrollo, como vía de comercio y de abastecimiento.

Nell’ambito della produzione e del commercio di manufatti ceramici nella regione adriatica, significativi risultano essere alcuni rinvenimenti effettuati nel sito di Aquileia. Nel corso delle moderne indagini presso i siti dei fondi Ex Cossar e della Casa delle Bestie ferite, nonché di ricerca di archivio nei magazzini del museo archeologico aquileiese, sono stati identificati esemplari di coppe e crateri riferibili alla produzione ellenistica a matrice di area dalmata,  e frammenti di ceramica a pareti sottili e di terra sigillata di produzione pannonica. Interessante risulta, inoltre, ai fini di un più ampio inquadramento economico commerciale del fenomeno esportativo di tali realtà produttive localizzate, l’identificazione di alcuni frammenti di manifattura retica, riferibile alla classe della Raetische Glanztonware, e di esemplari di ceramica metallescente di Treviri.
Da una prima analisi pare che tale nucleo di manufatti, così eterogeneamente composto, trovi solo pochi altri confronti in area italica, sancendo, di fatto, la rilevanza del dato, e l’importanza di Aquileia come snodo commerciale adriatico.

Ростовцева "Общество и хозяйство в Римской Империи" высказывается тезис, что римские завоевания и создание единой империи негативно сказались на цивилизационном развитии Средиземноморья. Создание однополярной империи предопределило её гибель и откат цивилизации на несколько столетий. Отмечается, что ещё сами римские авторы имели чрезвычайно критический взгляд на Римскую Империю и связывали упадок Рима с разрушением Карфагена. Для христианских авторов характерно негативное отношение к имперской и завоевательной политике, зато положительное к унификации Римского мира подготовившей принятие Евангелия всеми народами ойкумены.

Deze tekst is een samenvatting van enkele hoofdstukken uit Deel II: Caesar tegen de Oude Belgen dat grotendeels gewijd is aan de strijd van CAESAR tegen de Aduatuci en de Eburones. We gaan ondermeer op zoek naar het Oppidum Aduatucorum, het grote oppidum der Aduatuci. Dat werd belegerd en veroverd door CAESAR in-57. Later, tijdens de volgende oorlogsjaren-54 en-53 schrijft hij over een versterkte vesting Aduatuca waarbij de naamsgelijkheid opvalt. We analyseren de betreffende alinea's van De Bello Gallico. Door het verschijnen van de schitterende studie over de goudschatten der Belgae krijgen we een nauwkeurig beeld over de respectievelijke woongebieden der Nervii en Eburones. Tongeren.) Merkwaardig is dat de medeauteur en archeoloog NICO ROYMANS in een latere persconferentie het oppidum der Aduatuci in Thuin plaatst. In het daar gelegen oppidum, met de naam Bois-du-Grand-Bon-Dieu, meent hij de versterking der Aduatuci gevonden te hebben. Nochtans zou een gewone rekenmachine de archeoloog kunnen verhinderen deze merkwaardige aannames te maken. Het Bois-du-Grand-Bon-Dieu is ongeveer dertien (13) hectare groot. CAESAR schrijft dat er in dit oppidum 57.000 Aduatuci verzameld zijn. Dertien hectare is gelijk aan 130.000 vierkante meter. Per individu dat zich in dit oppidum bevindt, geeft dit 2,26 vierkante meter levensruim. CAESAR schrijft ook dat de Aduatuci zich daar verzamelen met " sua omnia " , dit is met have en goederen, koeien, schapen, karren, potten, slaapgerief. Het merkwaardige aan heel deze zaak is dat ik al met verscheidene vakmensen over deze merkwaardige wiskunde discussieerde maar altijd ongelijk krijg. De pure wiskundige uitslag van een elektronische rekenmachine weegt niet op tegen een loze academische bewering. Ik maakte hetzelfde mee toen een andere academicus beweerde dat de 'Sabis' een beek de 'Samme' was die bij La Louvière stroomt. Mijn grondig gedocumenteerde tegenwerpingen hielpen niet. Tien jaar later kan men die gekheid nog altijd lezen op sommige wetenschappelijke pagina's. Men leze mijn tekst dus met veel kritische zin en controleer mijn stellingen. Zie ook op

The archaeological settlement category of roman Insulae stays in the focus of
this international colloquium organized by the Vindonissa-professorship of the
University Basel and Augusta Raurica.
This group of urban living and trading quarters is characterized by the surrounding
square of the commonly orthogonal street grid. The basic idea of the
colloquium is to build a platform for researchers who are or have been working
on Insulae to discuss specific questions.
Although the main focus lies on the structural unit of the insula, the perspective
shall be extended to the urban surroundings. The embedding in the respective
context of the insula enables further statements.
Based on the architectural layout of an Insula and their spatial and functional
structure raises the fundamental question ab-out the functionality of an Insula.
