Ilya Prigogine

Complex forms of film narration, almost two decades after their popularization in the mid-1990s, make now a come-back through Hollywood productions. This chapter discusses the return of complex films and studies their storytelling modes from the scope of a broader epistemological paradigm shift towards the complexity of systems. The author suggests that this different perspective lets us address complex films not as deviant and alternative narratives, but as complex systems in their own right. Certain processes of complexity such as self-reference and pattern formation are highlighted as principles of organization of the complex filmic forms, and at the same time as new directions for film analysis and criticism.

A good part of what fuels the current boom in consciousness studies is the robust progress of cognitive psychology and neuroscience toward reaching consensus explanations of just about anything except consciousness. Despite hopes that empirical research and computational modeling would constrain theory, it seems that scholarly debate has not so much reached an impasse as remained at one reached in the 17th century. Given the massive effort currently invested in research and debate, the lack of progress towards a general (and generally accepted) theory of consciousness begins indeed to make consciousness look like a kind of 21st century Philosopher’s Stone, whose hidden nature seems to hold the key to the greatest mysteries, but continues to elude us. Accordingly, the present volume taps leading researchers and theorists in the study of consciousness and Whitehead scholars to explore an interface between process thinking and the burgeoning field of consciousness studies. In sum, the rationale for such a project has two main facets: first, the state of an educated debate that seems, first, unproductive and peculiarly burdened by its deep modernist origins; and, secondly, marked more by disciplinary rivalry than interdisciplinary synthesis.

L’auto-organisation est une notion aux multiples traditions, mobilisée entre autres par de nombreux physiciens depuis les années soixante-dix, aux frontières de la physique, de la chimie et de la biologie. Malgré des débats philosophiques nombreux, peu de travaux historiques y sont aujourd’hui consacrés, au même titre qu’à un grand nombre d’autres approches interdisciplinaires qui prennent leur essor au cours de la seconde moitié du XXe siècle. Nous étudions dans ce travail la genèse d’un concept d’auto-organisation chez le physico-chimiste belge Ilya Prigogine, prix Nobel de chimie 1977 et figure polémique chez les physiciens. Nous retraçons d’abord la préhistoire scientifique du mot, et l’arrière-plan embryologique auquel Prigogine l’emprunte, avant d’examiner le contexte de l’école de Bruxelles de thermodynamique des processus irréversibles, fondée par son maître Théophile De Donder, et la reconnaissance acquise par Prigogine dans la communauté physico-chimique des années soixante. Dans un second temps nous examinons l’élaboration de son concept d’auto-organisation de 1945 à 1975, le rôle qu’y joue l’entropie et son rapport à la biologie, à travers un projet philosophico-scientifique que l’on peut qualifer d’évolutionnisme thermodynamique. Enfin, nous nous penchons plus en détails sur l’impact qu’eut sur son travail l’article de Turing de 1952 sur le modèle de réaction-diffusion de la morphogenèse. Nous voyons comment le « concept-frontière » de structure dissipative permit à Prigogine de tisser un réseau d’analogies autour du travail de Turing et ainsi contribuer à son regain de succès dans des contextes variés.

// Self-organization is a notion with many traditions, among others mobilized by many physicists since the seventies, at the boundaries of physics, chemistry and biology. Despite the many philosophical debates, as yet few historical works are devoted to it, as well as to many others interdisciplinary approaches that are growing during the second half of the 20th century. In this work, the genesis of a concept of self-organization is studied among the Belgian chemical physicist Ilya Prigogine, Nobel Prize in Chemistry 1977 and a controversial figure among physicists. First we retrace the scientific prehistory of this word and the embryological background from which Prigogine borrows it, before examining the context of the Brussels School of thermodynamics of irreversible processes, founded by his master Théophile De Donder, and the recognition acquired by Prigogine during the sixties among the community of chemical physics. Secondly we look at the development of his concept of self-organization from 1945 to 1975, the role played by entropy and its relation to biology, through a philosophical and scientific project that can be qualified as thermodynamical evolutionism. Finally, we look in more detail the impact the Turing paper of 1952 about the reaction-diffusion model of morphogenesis had on his work. We see how the « boundary-concept » of dissipative structure allowed Prigogine to build a network of analogies about the work of Turing and to contribute to its renewed success in various contexts.

J. L. Austin's claim that language ‘used not seriously’ is ‘parasitic’ upon ‘normal use’ has proved a puzzle to literary scholars, who have often taken this to mean that they are not allowed to apply the insights of speech-act theory to their own object of research. This article explores how, when read together, Michel Serres’ definition of the parasite as a ‘thermal exciter’ and Deleuze's concept of ‘minor literature’ bring out the hidden potential inherent in Austin's claim. More specifically, the article argues that Austin's reference to literature as a parasitic entity might become a promising conceptual gift, allowing us to generate a new model for approaching the world-shaping potential of literary texts.

Skupiam się w nim przede wszystkim na materialistycznej ontologii leżącej u podstaw całej myśli Deleuze'a i Guattariego. Jako wątek przewodni wybieram tzw. genezę dynamiczną (w "Anty-Edypie" określaną mianem procesu produkcji).

In a recent lecture Michel Serres, like other scientists since the 1970s, has described the cosmos as an infinite computer. Atoms are not just matter, they also continuously transmit, encode and store information: the medium of such a pancomputationalism (the idea that everything computes) would be light. Few decades ago Serres criticized Bataille’s vitalism as just another “subcult of the sun”. Light is also the medium of the solar system energy chain and terrestrial photosynthesis: unlike Bataille, though, Serres stressed the transformation of sun energy into the abstract flows of money, information and eventually “databanks”. Contemporary philosophy has been often influenced by the idea that life is just based on the metabolism of negative entropy, that is the accumulation of energy against chaos. A recent theory has proposed, on the contrary, that life emerged on this planet under the ‘pressure’ of sun light that pushed molecular structures to a higher level of complexity in order to irradiate energy more efficiently. Reversing the common vitalist stereotypes, we could envision also aesthetics and politics as a quest towards more complex architectures of light.

A process philosophical interpretation of Deleuze’s theories of time encounters problems when formulating an account of Deleuze’s portrayal of temporality in The Time-Image, where time is understood as having the structure of instantaneity and simultaneity. I remedy this shortcoming of process philosophical readings by formulating a phenomenological interpretation of Deleuze’s second synthesis of time. By employing Deleuze’s logic of affirmative synthetic disjunction in combination with his differential calculus interpretation of Spinoza’s and Bergson’s duration, this phenomenological interpretation portrays time as given to our awareness in immediacy rather than through a continuous process of unfolding. The viability of this alternate approach calls into question the claims that Deleuze is strictly a process philosopher and anti-phenomenologist.

Die klassische Teilung der Wissenschaften in Natur- und Sozialwissenschaften ist bei komplexen Fragen wie beispielsweise der des Globalen Wandels kontraproduktiv und behindert ein gegenseitiges Verständnis über Disziplingrenzen hinweg. Mit dieser These als Ausgangspunkt eruiert der Beitrag, ob und inwiefern Systemtheorien zu einer interdisziplinären Anschlussfähigkeit beitragen können. In einem Vergleich der naturwissenschaftlichen Theorie dissipativer Strukturen von Ilya Prigogine mit der sozialwissenschaftlichen Theorie sozialer Systeme von Niklas Luhmann nehmen die Autorinnen Selbstorganisation, Autopoiesis und Selbstreferenz von natürlichen und sozialen Systemen in den Blick, die überraschende Überschneidungsbereiche zeigen. Unter der Frage nach den Mensch-Umwelt-Beziehungen – vor allem aus geographischer Perspektive – bedürften jedoch beide Theorieansätze einer Erweiterung: Die systemtheoretischen Humangeographie basierend auf Luhmanns Theorie sozialer Systeme müsste Materialität in den Blick bekommen und die Physiogeographie die innere Organisation natürlicher Phänomene verstärkt Beachtung finden.

Idea: There are in existence Special Systems that are Ultra Efficacious that are made possible by anomalies in Mathematics that organize Real Physical anomalies in phenomena so as to carry that extra leverage and parsimony of Hyper-efficient and Hyper-effective operation into existence affecting outcomes that are demonstrable even if rare.

This paper aims to show how, through the theory of dissipative structures, Ilya Prigogine has contributed, more than anyone else, to change the face of classical physics. In this case, we will see how, for the Belgian scientist, the discovery of temporal irreversibility, as a structuring element of all natural phenomena, constitutes the starting point for the development of a science of complexity that, by healing the rift between "the two cultures", finally manages to make the human being a responsible protagonist of his evolutive history.

En el presente ejercicio se tratan dos temas que guardan una gran relación entre sí: concordancia de la naturaleza e ignis mutat res. El engarze del segundo con el primero se verá obvio y por esa razón se han incluído juntos. Podría haberse titulado de múltiples maneras, todas ellas expresando una dicotomía y que  son reflejo de la riqueza de oposiciones de estas posturas. Así por ejemplo: simplicidad/complejidad,dinámica/termodinámica, gravitación/calor, reversibilidad/irreversibilidad, eternidad/temporalidad, conservación/disipación (de la energía), determinismo/espontaneidad,inerte/vivo,..., e incluso una muy elocuente, Newton o Boltzmann.
En una primera parte examinaremos los pilares sobre los que se erigió el sistema de Newton y que constituyeron el marco en el cuál el inglés genial pudo escribir una frase tal como "la naturaleza es muy simple y concorde consigo misma" . Posteriormente abordaremos cómo una ciencia que se había resistido firmemente al avasallamiento del programa newtoniano, aunque al final declinara siempre guardó en sí el germen de lo que sería el declinar esta vez de la Dinámica; estamos hablando de la Química. Terrible paradoja: Newton enuncia esta frase en la cuestión 31, dedicada a especulaciones químicas. Su intento de introducir la fª mecanicista en la ciencia de Paracelso se verá abocado a la producción de su oponente.

In this paper an attempt is made to discuss how the computer has imposed new conventions to architecture over the last thirty years. The paper’s aim, is to discuss how the introduction of digital media has forced architecture to find ways to deal with new technologies and to develop new disciplinary meanings. First, the paper addresses the question of complexity and chaos in the postmodern discussion by the reading of Lyotard’s theories. Therefore, the essay pinpoints attempts of developing new conceptions of “complexity” in architecture derived from the post-modern sciences of indetermination. Interengsly enough, this was doable because both these kind of sciences and the architecture using these concepts were/are based on the adoption of digital technologies. Consequently, a number of scientific and architectural projects are discussed. Then, complexity is discussed as a design method allowing the embodiment of scientific concepts in architecture. Still, it is noted that these architectures are not scientific objects, but are more poetic reflections based on scientific concepts. This leads the paper to investigate the possibility of Architecture to use science as a narrative. Such a possibility is spotted in the texts of the same architects discussed before showing how a project can embody cultural values. A number of specific studies (such as James Gleick, Lyotard, Charles Jencks, Gilles Deleuze and Sanford Kwinter as well as others) are then introduced in order to verify these connections. Finally, a number of questions are introduced in relation to the present condition of architecture in order to verify if and how these kinds of experimentations are still actual.

Lorsqu'on pense aux textes religieux et à ce qu'ils sont censés nous fournir, on pense au sens, au pourquoi, à une réponse qui d'une certaine manière éclaire tout, mais qui pourtant ne se trouve nulle part lorsque l'on cherche les causes proximales d’un phénomène quel qu'il soit. Aux sciences on demande d’identifier le comment, les mécanismes d'apparition, les régularités, les périodicités, les lois et l'on doit aussi poser en principe que ce qui explique la nature pourra se trouver à l'intérieur de la nature. Il semblera donc difficile de valider un enseignement des religions sur la présence d’un esprit divin ayant créé l'univers, sur sa venue dans cet univers ou sa manifestation dans des personnes saintes ou des lieux saints, à la manière d'une conclusion que trouverait la science. D’un autre côté, les conclusions de la science ne semblent répondre à aucune des grandes questions essentielles sur l'existence sur le sens que posent les religions.

The aim of this work is to illustrate how, following the revolutions of
thermodynamics and quantum physics and the evolution of cybernetics, a notable contribution was made to the advent of a new idea of temporality, that has become increasingly complex, on the scientific and philosophical side, to the point of dismissing the reductionist claims, advanced by that deterministic vision of reality, prevailing in the epistemological universe of modern sciences.

It is shown that a law of maximum entropy production can be reached deductively from the second law of thermodynamics with an assumption of the ontological irreducibility of nonlinear behaviour, and inductively from the study of simple physical systems where the usual explanatory mechanisms, e.g., genes, brains or other "maker", are clearly absent and therefore cannot be invoked.

En el libro "La Convergencia holística" , hacia 1993, revisé el proceso histórico que condujo a la cosmovisión no participativa (cfr Morris Berman) , a las representaciones diurnas del mundo (cfr Gilbert Durand), al olvido del ser (Martín Heidegger) para dilucidar filosóficamente la crisis de la conciencia espiritual de occidente y del mundo occidentalizado en el siglo XX y XXI. El texto se escribió para su aprobación por los eventuales jurados del doctorado en filosofía de la Universidad Javeriana, doctorado que nunca terminé, pues muy a tiempo me dí cuenta que mi libertad filosófica, laboral y académica era un camino divergente de la carrera académica institucional, tan ceñida a ciertos implícitos paradigmas epistemológicos de la comunidad filosófica internacional. El libro contiene tres ensayos, y delineé el cuarto. Aquí su esbozo, muy relacionable por cierto con otro texto, de difusión y lenguaje menos academicista, en la colección de artículos que llamé El retorno a Lo Sagrado (1999). Per Vladimir Jankélévitch l’uomo è davanti alla morte come davanti alla profondità superficiale del cielo notturno: non sa a cosa dedicarsi e la sua riflessione resta senza materia. Il legame tra il pensiero e la morte diviene ancor più problematico quando i progressi della medicina consentono di delimitare nella morte due dimensioni non distinte dalla natura: la cessazione dell’attività neurologica e la cessazione dell’attività cellulare.
Il volume ricostruisce il percorso teorico che porta dal ruolo simbolico della morte nella vita (Schelling, Fechner e il romanticismo tedesco) alla sua rimozione socio-culturale nel XX secolo (Scheler, Jonas, Baudrillard, Morin) e all’idea contemporanea che la medicina e la tecnologia possano realizzare l’immortalità terrena (Günther Anders, il post-umano). Tale percorso evidenzia la centralità del tema della morte per comprendere, da una parte, il ruolo dell’uomo nel mondo e per capire, dall’altra, le trasformazioni subite dal rapporto tra naturale e artificiale.

The 1st renaissance in polymer physics occurred with de Gennes, circa 1971-1979, introducing the reptation model of polymer dynamics.

The pre-de Gennes era established the concept of macromolecules (Staudinger), and de Gennes School developed the scaling concepts to adapt the statistical mechanics of the small molecules to the dynamics of the long macromolecular chains. This field has become a very sophisticated mathematical model, indeed, after 40 years of fruitful advances due to ramifications and improvements.

Yet, at the New School Polymer Physics, we maintain that we need to turn the page and start a new renaissance in polymer physics.  Do we need a clean slate? Do we need to start from scratch?

Besides, although one will find in the literature convincing experimental evidence of success for the classical models, which is the reason for their acceptance, we claim that these successes are due to the use of conditions that bring the state of the polymer above its TLL transition…

Is TLL, the Boyer’s liquid-liquid transition discussed in blog post #35, the onset of dissipation at the center of the differences between the classical de Genne’s statistical approach and the new Grain-Field Statistical approach of polymer interactions?

In finding new ways of understanding our world we have to deal with complexity issues, including the realisation that renewal depends on each individual. In order to speak complexity we need to rethink conversation as an autoproductive communicative event that can disclose the interconnectivity of our fitness landscapes. To further the philosophical connection, ethics is shown to underpin the choices people make, and the structural information needed is shown to be a coproduction between self and environment.
