Inculturation Theology

The Uniting Presbyterian Church in Southern Africa was formed on 26th September 1999 as the result of the union of the black Reformed Presbyterian Church in Southern Africa and the white-dominated Presbyterian Church of Southern Africa. Various unsuccessful attempts had been made since the latter part of  the  nineteenth century to effect union. In the spirit of national euphoria which surrounded the first democratic elections in South Africa in1994, the Reformed Presbyterian Church initiated union discussions with  the Presbyterian Church. The subsequent union was based on what are now considered to be inadequate preparations and many unresolved problems have emerged to test the witness of the new denomination, not the least of which is racism. L'abbaye bénédictine de Keur Moussa (Sénégal) a reçu en 2004 le prix annuel .des Académies pontificales pour son « pré- cieux travail d'inculturation du très riche répertoire musical grégorien dans les cadences et les, rythmes de l'Afrique ». Cette contribution tente d'illustrer la définition de l'inculturation liturgique selon Varietates legitimae 4 en retraçant la genèse et l'évolution de ce précieux héritage liturgique en terre africaine. Il en ressort que l'inculturation liturgique entre dans la logique, de la fécondation réciproque entre l'Eglise universelle et les Eglises locales en favorisant l'intégration et l'enracine-ment de l'Évangile de Jésus Christ dans plusieurs cultures et lieux géographiques.

In 2004, the Benedictine Abbey of Keur Moussa (Senegal) was awarded the Pontifical Academies' annual prize for its "precious work of inculturation of the very rich Gregorian musical repertoire into the cadences and rhythms of Africa". This contribution attempts to illustrate the definition of liturgical inculturation according to Varietates legitimae 4 by tracing the genesis and evolution of this precious liturgical heritage on African soil. It shows that liturgical inculturation is part of the logic of reciprocal fecundation between the universal Church and the local Churches, promoting the integration and rooting of the Gospel of Jesus Christ in different cultures and geographical locations.

This chapter describes the transformation of religious communication related to the use of media (speech, print, the Internet) by the Polish miracular communities. The analysis covers the period from the end of the Second World War to contemporary times. The media coverage of miraculous phenomena created by journalists has been completely omitted in the text, as they cannot be included in these communities. The first part of the chapter presents the type of Polish miracular religiosity, which is directed towards miraculous events. Next, the most important post-war miracles and apparitions (Lublin 1949, Zabłudów 1965, and Oława 1983–2002) and the use of media to promote religious content are described. The analysis shows that initially, direct verbal communication dominated, sometimes enriched by writing, usually in the form of letters. Only the apparitions of Oława in the 1980s began to be propagated on a mass scale using the printed word, on occasion supported by audio cassettes. In the third part, the contemporary use of the Internet is analysed. It follows that the Internet is used mainly by the miracular communities for informational rather than participatory purposes, resulting from computer-mediated communication disadvantages.

The Johannine and Akan ideologies pertaining to communal existence place significant emphasis on the cultivation of values such as reciprocal service and care. Nevertheless, upon careful examination of the Akan conceptual framework, it becomes apparent that these principles are espoused and upheld due to Akan belief in the indispensable nature of interdependence of human beings. This belief stems from their recognition of the inherent insufficiency of the human being which consequently gives rise to imperfect expressions of service and nurturing. Thus, the study aims to provide a biblical response to these challenges by employing Ukpong's inculturation hermeneutics. This approach presents a framework for interpretation that enables an exploration of sociocultural matters in a manner that not only enhances the comprehension of the biblical text but also permits the text to function as a discerning evaluation of the Akan culture and propose possible remedies for its sociocultural challenges. The findings reveal that the Akan concepts foster a form of reciprocal care that is propelled by individual motivations and also service that is incentivised by rewards. Consequently, this paper proposes that the Akan believers must emulate the servanthood of Jesus and see reciprocal care as a response to divine instruction. This pursuit should be undertaken with the intention of fostering a sense of familial unity, rather than with the anticipation of receiving equivalent treatment in return. This article makes a valuable contribution to the field of African Biblical Hermeneutics and the ongoing discourse surrounding the integration of the New Testament into the African cultural framework.

The publication of this book is a response to the ordination of ACP 2017 Santo Domingo, 162, which states: “We recommend that the articles related to the 800th Anniversary of the Order of Preachers serialized in the Philippiniana Sacra be published as a book.” Moreover, putting up this volume serves as part of the four-year celebration leading to the golden jubilee of the foundation of the Dominican Province of the Philippines on December 8, 2021. Finally, its timing is providential in that the Philippine Church, in her preparation for the 500th year of the coming of Christianity in the country in 2021, consecrates this year to the clergy and the consecrated men and women.

This article offers an African Feminist Missiological perspective on re-inculturating of Suum-ngi 1 creation worldview of Kadung people within the Church of Christ in Nations (COCIN). The article argues that COCIN seems to have uncritically inculturated the suum-ngi creation worldview with all its patriarchal tendencies which have found new and unhelpful power expressions within COCIN. This uncritical inculturation of suum-ngi has facilitated gender discrimination in the Church, which tends to oppose the principles of the mission of God in the world. The choice of COCIN in this article is informed by the fact that majority of Kadung Christians belong to this church denomination. The article also highlights, that despite the patriarchal connotations the suum-ngi can still be re-inculturated as an indigenous resource that can facilitate gender justice as it has some elements that can foster equality of humanity and gender justice in COCIN. Among the many unprecedented challenges that Brazil presented to the Jesuits, perhaps the most surprising was its resistance to making viable martyrs. The two places most likely to provide them a violent death were the sertão (backlands) and the sea. Jesuits in the Portuguese colony wanted adversaries to slay them in odium fidei (in hatred of the faith), a traditional requirement for martyrdom. Yet the Jesuits' rhetorical construction of Indigenous peoples in the sertão, combined with its complex social dynamics, proved incompatible with this requirement. During the first decades of the province of Brazil, the Soldiers of Christ found that while their evangelical work remained on land, the sea's narrative tropes suited the requirements for martyrdom best. To build their case for Jesuit martyrs in Brazil, José de Anchieta and his Jesuit companions subverted an age-old poetic landscape and constructed a fluid literary cartography.

L’expérience pastorale de l’inculturation du rite des jumeaux au Bénin ne va pas sans rencontrer des résistances tant de la part des dignitaires des cultes traditionnels que des chrétiens. Au niveau des chrétiens catholiques, certains pensent que le rite inculturé aide beaucoup de jumeaux en difficulté et devrait être poursuivi. D’autres estiment qu’il s’agit là d’une application pure et simple des rites traditionnels aux chrétiens, et qu’une telle démarche ne favorise ni la foi ni les cultures. À notre avis, c’est au niveau du processus que le bât blesse : les diverses étapes de l’inculturation n’ont pas été suivies. C’est pourquoi, après avoir situé l’inculturation du rite des jumeaux dans le contexte historique des inculturations par « récupération – purification – substitution » effectuées tout au long de l’histoire de l’Église, nous rappellerons le processus de l’inculturation selon les normes liturgiques postconciliaires. Enfin, face au risque de déification des jumeaux, nous envisagerons la revalorisation-contextualisation des prières de libération prévues par la liturgie du sacrement de baptême, afin d’aider les jumeaux chrétiens en contexte béninois.

Leadership in any sphere; be it political, social, military, cultural, civic, religious, family, church, public, private, non-governmental, regional and global, creates, adapts, or adopts its own truth. All organisations operate according to truth they firmly believe in and deeply uphold. This phenomenon of operating according to truth believed in and upheld is ubiquitous. It is in politics, economics, fashion, media, science, sport, business, government, family, church, social clubs etc. There is a strong characterization  by acting with conviction vis a vis what an individual or organization believes is right or following the rightness of the accepted concept, model, ideology, philosophy, belief system or situation as per their stipulated and accepted standards. The premise on which this book is built from, is defined as from truth to legacy building / development. The intention of this model is to bring out fundamental leadership insights from the truth believed by the leadership or influencers. In 2020 schreef ik op basis van mijn promotieonderzoek het artikel 'Gerard Lukken herzien. Van inculturatie naar culturatie en weer terug. Een pleidooi voor een Lukken-Hoondert model', waarin ik de beschouwing van Gerard Lukken over het concept inculturatie uitvoerig beschouw en spiegel aan de internationale literatuur.

In 2022 heeft prof. dr. Lukken een nieuw deel van het Instituut voor Rituele en Liturgische Studies (IRiLiS) geschreven met als titel: De liturgische vernieuwing in Nederland na Vaticanum II.

Hierin besteedt hij tot mijn grote verrassing aandacht mijn artikel, waarover hij lovend spreekt, en aanbeveelt voor verder onderzoek. Ook geeft hij aan in te stemmen met mijn model over inculturatie/culturatie, waarvoor ik ook de beschouwingen van Martin Hoondert gebruikte. Uiteindelijk doopte ik dit model "Lukken-Hoondert-model". Prof. Lukken stelt echter voor om dit te hernoemen naar "Beumer-Hoondert-Lukken-model", een term die ik graag accepteer. Zie pagina 37-38.

The main focus of this contribution is the encounter of the best known hermit Saint Antony the great of Egypt with Jesus, the Savior of the world, two hundred years after Jesus' life time. This encounter with Jesus, the Savior of the world through radical discipleship transformed the desert of Egypt into a city of God where hermits living nearby were organized by Saint Antony the great into partly shared existence. This radical discipleship which is indigenous, vernacular, graced ascetic, communitarian and Spirit-filled can inspire today's African Christianity in dealing with the challenges and signs of the times. The importance and richness of Saint Antony the great encounter with Jesus, the Savior of the world draw attention to the specific vocation and mission of the Church of Africa in our post-modern and multi-cultural world.

When the City of the Name of God of Macao marked 400 years of Portuguese administration in 1956, the Catholic community’s participation was marked by a wide range of activities that included liturgical celebrations, public processions and other devotions that involved large numbers of the lay faithful, members of confraternities, in addition to the clergy and religious of the enclave. Twenty-one years later the Diocese of Macao celebrated its own quatercentenary with celebrations of a decidedly more sober character and at the retrocession of Macao to Chinese control in December 1999, other than a few liturgical events and hierarchical presence at civic ceremonies, the Church was all but invisible. 福音在中國本地化的隱喻：天主教的一個觀點
本文對於福音在中國本地化隱喻的研究，無意也不能鉅細無遺地論述這巨大而具有挑戰性的主題所涉及的全部事情及問題。
在此我集中討論三個題目。在第一章中，我要向大家介紹文化概念及後現代文化、本地化概念及相關的術語以及目前天主教會內對於本地化的討論。

在第二章中，我要向大家展示中國天主教會的本地化歷史過程中的主要節點。然而，本人將迴避以大量篇幅討論中國禮儀之爭問題，因為關於這一話題的文獻已經十分全面和廣泛。


在第三章中，我首先要總括地介紹因文化基督徒的討論而激發的本地化爭論，然後特別介紹劉小楓的神學建議。雖然這討論不是特別從天主教的角度出發，但它無疑是中國當代基督宗教和神學領域中最有意義的問題之一。本人認為，為此奉上天主教的聲音還是值得的。

El objetivo general de la investigación fue comprender las características de los aportes al desarrollo del país de los graduados de la Universidad Nacional de Educación (UNE) de las décadas 50-80. Se estudió los efectos de la política y la trascendencia pedagógica del currículo integral que desarrolló la universidad en más de tres décadas, formando profesionales universitarios en educación y destacados en otras áreas (Ciencia y Cultura). El método de investigación fue estudio de casos y autobiográfico. La investigación fue cualitativa etnográfica, con muestreo intencional, y población conformada por informantes representativos de las promociones. Se empleó la observación participante y la entrevista focalizada. Se concluyó que la Cantuta aportó egresados integralmente formados al servicio de diversas realidades del país.
