Mannerism

This paper explores the didactic meanings behind Dutch Mannerist artist Cornelis van Haarlem's 1592 painting The Fall of Man. It deals with three main aspects of the work: the figure of the serpent-woman who tempts Eve with fruit from the Tree of Knowledge, the various animals and their symbolic meanings, and the idealized figures of Adam and Eve. Each of these figures and animals presents the viewer with a particular moral lesson. Throughout the early modern period, fear of temptation and sin were daily realities for many Christians. The didacticism present in this work is largely a manifestation of these anxieties. By using the perfect bodies of the first couple and depicting the exact moment that sin enters the world, van Haarlem reminds the viewer of his or her own morality while simultaneously warning that foolishness and pride can, at any time, lead to one's personal downfall.

Die Magisterarbeit beleuchtet einen zentralen Aspekt der persuasiven Kunst Caravaggios: Detailliert wird aufgezeigt, wie die Antithese, ein Kunstgriff der antiken Rhetorik zur Spannungserzeugung, das Wesen seiner Malerei bestimmt. Die Erläuterung seines Schaffensprozesses als konzipierte Kunst zementiert die Forschung, die Merisis geschulte Formensprache herausstellt und den Künstler von dem Klischee des Außenseiters und nicht akademischen Malers befreit. Ein Exkurs zur Entwicklung der Stilfigur legt den vermehrten Gebrauch antithetischer Stilmittel im Manierismus und Barock dar und verortet Caravaggios Konzept in eben jener Epoche, die den Kontrast zwischen Himmlischem und Irdischem sucht.

Il presente elaborato tenta una contestualizzazione dal punto di vista storico-artistico del ciclo di affreschi con le Storie di Diana e Atteone eseguito dal Parmigianino (1503-1540) in una saletta del castello di Fontanellato, verosimilmente fra il 1523 e il 1524. A partire da un’analisi del dato stilistico, si sono tratteggiati i principali riferimenti – da Mantegna al Correggio, da Leonardo al Pordenone – che giocarono un ruolo decisivo nella formazione del linguaggio del giovane artista, così come si mostra tanto a Fontanellato quanto nelle opere del primo periodo parmense. Attraverso lo studio della committenza e la valutazione delle principali interpretazioni iconologiche, si è cercato inoltre di dare conto del significato cifrato e sfuggente del ciclo. Si è infine evocata la diffusione di quel tipo di decorazioni a soggetto mitologico nelle corti padane, sottolineando come la stratificazione di significati, fra allegorici, religiosi e morali, tenuti insieme dalla cultura umanistica, dimostri la volontà di una piccola corte di allinearsi ai cenacoli culturali più aggiornati.

Although painting at the court of the Emperor Rudolf II in Prague has been regarded as a distinctive artistic phenomenon since the early 20th century, finding a place for Rudolfine art in the history of European painting and in the art historiography of the individual Central European countries is still an open issue. The aim of this study is to identify the roots of this process by observing the changes that occurred in the discourse on Rudolfine painters in the course of the 17th and 18th centuries, making use of contemporary literature and records about how their works were displayed in the visual context of the time.

História do conjunto retabular ordenado por D. Miguel da Gama, senhor da Vidigueira, para a capela-mor do convento carmelita de Nossa Senhora das Relíquias, na vila da Vidigueira, e dos painéis que o compunham, da autoria do pintor maneirista Simão Rodrigues. Revela-se o contrato notarial da obra (1605), bem como a existência de duas das tábuas componentes (actualmente no Museu Diocesano de Arte Sacra do Santuário de Fátima), e as ressonâncias de hibridismos afro-orientais, fruto da presença do encomendante no Oriente em cargos de governação no Estado Português da Índia. D. Miguel da Gama, que trouxe de Goa várias peças de ourivesaria e marfim para ornar o convento por si beneficiado na vila natal, possuía escravos japoneses e também meninos pretos forros, acaso os que se representam no quadro Adoração dos Magos.

Birth of Venus, and Mars and Venus, remains an iconographical mystery. As such, it is particularly interesting to analyze them. Now at the Galleria degli Uffizi in Florence and National Gallery in London, these paintings, executed between 1480 and 1490, were commissioned with specific aesthetic and intellectual aims and were intended to be hung in private rooms for personal viewing. Botticelli's mythological paintings reflect the Renaissance humanistic body of thought: the study of antiquity and Neoplatonic philosophy. This essay focuses on one aspect: an interpretation of the influence of antiquity and humanism in Botticelli's Minerva and the Centaur, a conflation of Minerva pacifica and Minerva pudica.

Este ensaio aborda a vertente mecenática de D. Teotónio de Bragança à frente do Arcebispado de Évora, mostrando a grande importância dos seus empreendimentos construtivos e de decoração artística e o modo actualizado como adaptou os princípios tridentinos do ‘restauro storico’, fiel à leitura do Cardeal Cesare Baronio, e de revitalização das ‘sacrae imagines’ em lugares de alegado culto paleocristão no Alentejo. Figura cultíssima e viajeira, desenvolveu um novo tipo de arquitectura religiosa, servindo-se de artistas de formação romana, como o arquitecto Nicolau de Frias ou o seu arquitecto e escultor Pero Vaz Pereira. A arte que nasce em Évora no fim do século XVI, sob signo da Contra-Maniera, atinge assim um brilho que rivaliza com os anos do reinado de D. João III e do humanista André de Resende. Velhos cultos e novos temas iconográficos emergem com D. Teotónio, como os de São Manços, São Jordão, São Brissos, Santa Comba, São Torpes e outros mártires considerados eborenses. Fez encomendas em Madrid, Roma e Florença para enriquecer a Sé e o grandioso Mosteiro de Scala Coeli da Cartuxa, por si fundado. Desenvolveu um tipo de decoração global, espécie de 'ars senza tempo' aplicada às igrejas-auditório alentejanas, onde o fresco, o stucco, o dourado, a talha e o azulejo se articulam de modo unívoco, e que é assaz original. Trata-se, assim, de um capítulo notabilíssimo da arte portuguesa sob signo do Concílio de Trento, que passa a estar devidamente documentado e analisado.

El Greco was in Italy for around 9 years, three of which were certainly spent in Rome. This paper investigates over his Italian journay and the connections with the late Mannerism, revisiting the historical sources and the critical literature with a new perspective and new proposals for the development of his formation and style .

Before the turn of the twenty-first century, the role of eroticism in Dutch art and the purpose of its images has largely being neglected. However, in their time these representations of nudity and salacious images and the subjects they implied were often cited in contemporary writings, songbooks and farces. The authors usually attributed a moralising meaning to them so as to ‘justify’ their appearance.

This dissertation will consider the role of eroticism in the art of the Dutch Mannerists of the late sixteenth and early seventeenth century. It will focus on the paintings, engravings and drawings between 1585 and 1630 from the artists working in Haarlem and Utrecht. The adoption and development of this phenomenon is examined in chapter one. Chapter two looks at eroticism in works with a mythological subject. Finally, chapter three deals with the salacious images with a biblical or religious subject. Subsequently the role of these images in the oeuvre of these artists and in society will be revealed. The role of eroticism in biblical and religious subjects has not been analysed extensively, this dissertation aims to enrich existing research.

This dissertation draws on a contextual and object-based approach in which primary published educational books, farces and songbooks from the Dutch seventeenth century as well as more recent secondary sources are used to construct an argument. Images from the Netherlands Institute of History archive will prove insight to the extent of the role of eroticism in Dutch Mannerism.

This is a study on how Alonso Berruguete and Bartolomé Bermejo have won international recognition as the first two strictly Spanish artists of genius, thanks to the exhibitions organized in El Prado, the National Gallery of London, the National Gallery of Art and the Meadows Museum, during 2019 and 2020. The author analyses that the art of the Spanish Renaissance must be rescued from oblivion so as to raise it up to its corresponding level.

L’articolo analizza alcuni aspetti della prima parte delle Rime di Luigi Groto Cieco d’Adria (1541–1585), uno dei più interessanti poeti del manierismo letterario veneziano. Attraverso l’analisi del rapporto tra metrica e sintassi, l’autore descrive affinità e differenze tra madrigali e sonetti. I madrigali sono più improntati alla ricerca del concettismo, mentre i sonetti sono caratterizzati da artifici retorici geometrici. Questi due differenti stili fanno entrambi parte di un generale ripensamento del petrarchismo.

Ensaio de conjunto, ‘estado da questão’ e precisões críticas sobre a intervenção do mestre pintor lisboeta Diogo Teixeira no Porto, onde se deslocou em 1591-1592 para pintar as tábuas do retábulo de D. Lopo de Almeida. Voltará em 1597-1598, para as obras de restauro das mesmas, e a pintura da Bandeira Real da Santa Casa da Misericórdia do Porto. Caracterizam-se as obras dentro dos estilemas maneiristas do pintor, como já fizera Adriano de Gusmão em 1955, e destaca-se a novidade da obra deixada e o papel que o seu repertório, muito pessoalizado, vai assumir no Norte de Portugal, influenciando vários artistas portuenses como os pintores Francisco Correia, Domingos Lourenço Pardo ou Francisco João de Anvers, assim retardando a entrada na região dos novos modelos proto-barrocos. Estudo do modelo pessoalizadíssimo da «Visitação da Virgem», onde Diogo Teixeira inaugura um protótipo, seguido por muitos outros artistas coevos.

Neste ensaio, analisa-se de modo sustentado a obra da fachada do Paço Ducal de Vila Viçosa, uma das obras-primas da arquitectura civil portuguesa da Idade Moderna, assumindo-se que a sua traça se deve ao arquitecto régio Nicolau de Frias, que terá iniciado o projecto cerca de 1577 a mando do sexto Duque D. João I, interrompendo a obra com Alcácer Quibir e retomando-a com celeridade em 1583, já a mando do Duque D. Teodósio II. O término, que decorre já no primeiro terço do século XVII, deveu-se ao arquitecto Pero Vaz Pereira. Dessa obra gigantesca, com frontaria de 110 m de comprido, sem precedentes na arquitectura civil nacional, que sabiamente utiliza as ordens toscana, jónica e coríntia sobrepostas ao longo de vinte e três tramos de três andares, e modelo de serliana central, sobressai a solução contra-reformista de raiz italiana, com incidência de modelos palaciais castelhanos generalizados na época da regência de Filipe II. É absolutamente incontornável que esta solução só vigorou em Portugal em plena segunda metade do século XVI e ela não pode ser, em caso algum, confundida com o modelo construtivo da campanha de D. Teodósio I. Por outro lado, o conhecimento que temos hoje do estilo do francês Francisco de Loreto, arquitecto das obras de D. Teodósio I, pelo que nos deixou nas igrejas de Arronches e das Chagas de Vila Viçosa, vem-nos iluminar sobre o que era o gosto renascentista desse Duque e o tipo de obras que custeou no seu paço. Assim, apura-se que a campanha definitiva de Nicolau de Frias – aquela que chegou aos nossos dias -- proveu a ampliação, reformulação e substituição de uma anterior fachada renascentista «ao romano», mais pequena, concebida e acaso lavrada pelo arquitecto francês Francisco de Loreto, da qual nada resta. A definitiva campanha veio conferir ao Terreiro ducal o carácter que preserva na actualidade, com a força severa de uma arquitectura maneirista de gosto herreriano-escurialense a rimar com o desejo de emulação e sentido de modernidade pretendidos pelos Braganças, não escondendo já as suas ambições de sucessão dinástica.

In 1555, assisted by Cristofano Gherardi, Il Doceno (1508-1556), Giorgio Vasari (1511-1574) designed and painted a mythological and cosmological theme in the Sala degli Elementi, an apartment of Cosimo I de' Medici (1519-1574), Duke of Florence, at the Palazzo Vecchio in Florence. The Apartment of the Elements is dedicated to the four elements (air, earth, fire, and water), which in antiquity were considered to be the basis of the material of the world. The four elements are personified as a history painting theme on the ceiling and the walls of the chamber. Accordingly, on the ceiling is the element of Air, personified by several events: Its center depicts Saturn Mutilating Heaven and surrounding this scene are The Chariots of the Sun and the Moon, the images of Day and Night, and the virtues of Peace, Fame, Justice, and Truth. On the walls of the chamber, there are personifications of the elements of Earth (north), Fire (east), and Water (south). The frescoes on the left hand wall relate to the element of Earth. In the center of the north wall, the first fruits of the Earth are offered to Saturn. 1 On the adjacent wall, east wall, above the fireplace, are scenes relating to the element of Fire: Vulcan's Forge is depicted in the center of wall. 2 On the adjacent wall, south wall, the element of Water is symbolized with The Birth of Venus. 3 On the window wall, west wall, are two large niches containing simulated sculptures of Hermes-Mercury and Hades-Pluto. These two images connect thematically with the wall decoration of the elements and the pantheon of the gods on the ceiling. This essay will focus only on the image of Hermes-Mercury. It consists of two parts: the stylistic impact of classical and Renaissance sources of this astral and pagan god in Vasari's imagery, and the signification of the personification of Mercury associated and interconnected with Cosimo I de' Medici, Duke of Florence.

Estudo histórico, iconográfico e artístico do túmulo do capitão de Ormuz e Cochim, Jerónimo de Mascarenhas, peça de fim do século XVI que se encontra na igreja do Bom Jesus de Goa, templo que foi construído a suas expensas. Ensaio sobre as políticas de conversão dos gentios e das estratégias de convencimento através das imagens sacras no Estado Português da Índia durante o período dos Filipes. História e estudo do testamento de um convertido de Ormuz, o príncipe persa D. Afonso de Norandim, protegido de Matias de Albuquerque e de Jerónimo Mascarenhas, que viverá alguns anos junto aos frades agostinhos de Lisboa, no mosteiro de Nossa Senhora da Graça, casa onde faleceu em 1590. No testamento, deixa numerosos bens (têxteis indianos e chineses etc) para igrejas portuguesas.

The article examines and discusses some drawings by Giulio Pippi, known as Romano (c.1495–1546). One sheet is unpublished, while a few others are already known, although their exact destination is unknown. All of them concern the Mantuan period of Giulio, who worked for the Gonzaga family from 1524 until his death. The sheets all relate to Palazzo Te, except for one linked to an altarpiece carried out by his workshop.

This article studies the mature career of the Florentine painter Alessandro Fei del Barbiere (1537-1592), beginning with the rediscovery of the 'Ascension' altarpiece formerly in the Albizi Chapel in the destroyed church of San Pier Maggiore, Florence. Studying this painting and others recorded in 1584 by the biographer Raffaello Borghini, such as the two altarpieces for Santa Maria delle Grazie and the Madonna dell'Umiltà in Pistoia, the author reconstructs a body of works showing how in the 1580s Fei gradually went beyond the archaic style of his apprenticeship - he had been trained by Ridolfo del Ghirlandaio and Pierfrancesco Foschi, but was also marked by the Maniera of Vasari - evolving towards naturalism in both mimesis and pictorial handling. In Florence, his development partly parallels that of Santi di Tito and his circle, but Fei was also influenced by a probable sojourn during the early part of that decade in Rome, where he could have been inspired by Girolamo Muziano and the painters working for Pope Gregory XIII. Among other proposals, the author suggests that the artist was responsible for decorating the chancel of Fiesole Cathedral (c. 1584-1589), which consisted of an altarpiece, only rarely discussed by scholars, and a cycle of frescoes hitherto attributed to Nicodemo Ferrucci.

My aim here is to reconnect the systematic sense of mannerism with its art historical sense. After a brief discussion of how philosophy intervenes in art historical debates surrounding mannerism, we will first revisit the paradox of what Jean-Luc Nancy has called ‘the singular plural of the essence of the arts’. Well before the beginning of the historical era of Art and its alleged modern end, mannerism already discovered that the vestige of art, once we leave behind its claim to an essence or dominant style, is a plurality of manners, each of which marks ‘art’s beginning’ – or becoming – ‘otherwise than art’ . Moreover, while mannerism is a concept of becoming specific to art, occurring in the 16th century qua historical ‘style,’ it is not limited to art. For both Giorgio Agamben and Gilles Deleuze, it describes a general economy of use. As we will see, however, their interpretations (lateness versus novelty) and evaluations (alienation versus naturalization) nonetheless diverge, such that, with Agamben, mannerism remains bound by the classical opposition of style and manner, whereas with Deleuze, it explodes into modernism.

An Alchemical Heaven: The Studiolo Ceiling of Francesco I de’ Medici
Between 1570 and 1572, under the tutelage of Giorgio Vasari, Vincenzo Borghini and Giovanni Battista Adriani invented an enchanted and mysterious emblematic program for the cabinet of Francis I de’ Medici, Lo Studiolo. In the ceiling of this cabinet an alchemical heaven was decorated with images of art, nature and science. While the walls were composed of twenty cupboards covered with oval paintings illustrating the precious contents found inside. The imagery of these cupborad of curiosities alluded to a terrestrial realm whereas the ceiling revealed a metaphysical realm. In the center of the vault, Prometheus, The Titan God of Prudence and Crafty Counsel, is gifted with jewels by Nature, around him the elements of Nature (air, fire, earth and water) also provide him with a cosmic realm.
Vasari with his assistants Jacopo Zucchi and Francesco Morandi visualized the Neoplatonic and alchemical program invented by Borghini and Adriani. They wished to capture in the ceiling of the Studiolo the art of transformation: nature through the seasons; human nature through the temperaments; and physical nature into artistic conceits. This symbolic metaphor aimed to encapsulate the alchemical inclinations and personality of Francis I who through the mirabilia of precious objects was forming in his private Studiolo a microcosm of art as well as a macrocosm of scientific knowledge. 
Under the influence of Boccaccio’s Geneologiae and Marsilio Ficino’s Quaestiones Quinque de Mente, sixteenth-century humanists (Borghini and Adriani) viewed Prometheus as a Neoplatonic human soul, who partook of celestial light and divine knowledge as well as of human essence. This new interpretation of Prometheus was projected into the persona of Francis I who mythically was viewed as a noble ruler and a divine artist–an inventor and a creator of the natural arts–hence, Prometheus-Francis’ collecting actions combined a terrestrial world, a laboratory for the rare objects, and a metaphysical world, a Studiolo filled with alchemical knowledge of the arts.  This new type of alchemical cabinet will influence the formation of wunderkammer or the museum of natural history in the following century.

La chiesa di San Salvatore in Lauro a Roma venne riedificata a partire dal 1598 per i canonici secolari di San Giorgio in Alga, sotto il patronato del cardinale Michele Bonelli. Il progetto della navata, scandita dall’impiego di binati di colonne libere monolitiche in travertino, era sinora attribuito al bolognese Ottaviano Mascherino; tuttavia le ricerche archivistiche hanno permesso di accertare che il cardinale protettore affidò l’incarico al suo architetto di fiducia, il frate predicatore Domenico Paganelli da Faenza, e di circoscrivere l’intervento di Mascherino a una fase edilizia successiva. La soluzione adottata per l’aula si può quindi inserire nel più. ampio dibattito sull’articolazione interna delle chiese post-tridentine e in modo particolare sulla possibilità. di conferire al modello vignolesco del Gesù di Roma forme auliche e monumentali. Il saggio prende in esame l’ordine interno di San Salvatore nelle sue componenti (la colonna libera, il binato), ne ricerca i modelli antichi e moderni e propone un’ipotesi di restituzione del capocroce, infine affronta la fortuna della colonna libera nell’architettura romana del primo Seicento sino a Pietro da Cortona e Carlo Rainaldi. Alla luce di questa analisi la ricostruzione tardo cinquecentesca di San Salvatore in Lauro si rivela un episodio di speciale interesse nello sviluppo dell’architettura barocca.

Giorgio Vasari sembra legare la riuscita della più celebre delle imprese mantovane di Giulio, palazzo Te, a un felice impiego dello stucco nell’architettura e nella decorazione: il Pippi era infatti riuscito, attraverso la tecnica di matrice antica riscoperta da Giovanni da Udine e messa in opera nei cantieri di Raffaello nell’Urbe, a trasformare la città dei Gonzaga in una nuova Roma.
Il contributo, nato da riflessioni sull’impiego dello stucco nei cantieri decorativi del Cinquecento, intende documentare l’utilizzo di questo peculiare medium nelle creazioni giuliesche, sia affrontando la fase progettuale che quella esecutiva. Si ricorre alle fonti e in larga misura alla grafica – schizzi, progetti, ma anche copie e d’aprés –, misurando l’eseguito, le trasformazioni e il perduto. Si presentano due disegni inediti che testimoniano la perduta decorazione della volta della cappella della Maddalena in Trinità de Monti.
Il testo offre un contributo alla ridefinizione dell’imprescindibile ruolo giocato da Giulio nella messa a punto di un sistema moderno di progettazione architettonica e decorativa, ponendosi l’obiettivo di illustrare la rilevanza dell’azione dell’artista nella diffusione di una moderna concezione di ornamento e nella circolazione di tecniche, modelli e di un ricco repertorio di motivi decorativi, alla luce dei recentissimi aggiornamenti sull’impiego dello stucco nel Cinquecento, una tecnica e un materiale di origine antica ma in grado di dare forma a una coscienza del costruire e del decorare pienamente moderna.
