Mieszko I

The circumstances surrounding the birth of the Polish state have long elicited fascination. The events of those times, as recorded by a range of chroniclers, convey the figure of Mieszko I as a leader fighting alongside his brothers, with varying fortune, on the western borderlands of the state then emerging. Only one of those brothers is known by name – Czcibor – whereas about the other we know only that he died during a clash with Wichman, the exiled German graf (count). The few and laconic written sources we have do, however, bear witness to a dynasty that in only just a few years – most probably between 962 and 966 – expanded its realm from virtual non-existence into organizational and territorial greatness. Indeed, as the emissary from Cordoba, Ibrahim ibn Yaqub, writing in 965, noted, “[a]nd as concerns the country of Mieszko, his is the vastest of the Slavic countries”.
What does modern archaeology tell us about these matters? To what degree can the discoveries made in various regions of Polish lands be acknowledged as sufficient?
These are but some of the many questions I shall try to answer on the pages of this monograph.

The paper is an attempt to decipher the name of the brother of Mieszko I and place name where  battle with german duke Hodon took place in 972, mentioned in Thietmar of Merseburg’s chronicle. They are only known from a single MLat. inscription as Cidebur, and from its Latinized form as Cidini . In an author’s view they should be delatinized as Siecebor and Sitno (Sitna). Based on a substition and transcription analysis, the author formulates a hypothesis concerning the location and progress of the battle.

The paper presents a new hypothesis according to which Tugumir (Pol. Tęgomir), a Christian duke of the Stodorans (Havelians) beginning from 940, was a godfather of Mieszko-Dagome, the first Christian duke of Poland. It is suggested that Mieszko the First as a neophyte adopted Tugumir’s name as his official Christian name and therefore he used it in the document called Dagome iudex, who was sent to Rome ca. 990. The necrologium of the women’s cloister in Möllenbeck informs us that “duke Thugumir died” (Ob. Thugumir dux) on 25th May. It probably refers to Mieszko the First, who – according to Thietmar’s chronicle – died 25th May of 992, and not to Tugumir, the duke of Stodorians. It is finally suggested that the death-note of Mieszko-Thugumir-Dagome in this necrologium was introduced by the mediation of Oda, Mieszko’s second wife, who was expelled from Poland by Boleslaus the Brave. She spent her last years in a female cloister in Germany, most probably in Möllenbeck.

"Poland, Holy War and the Piast Monarchy" explores the evolution of the idea of holy war in medieval Poland. It examines the origins and practice of holy wars conducted by the Poles in the southern Baltic, the last bastion of paganism in Europe. The book traces the transmission of the idea of holy war to Central Europe and explains its impact on political and religious life in Poland. It takes
account of the Polish missionary and crusading activity in Prussia, Pomerelia, and Pomerania. The book analyses the interplay between wars of conquest and holy wars and the emergence
of the crusades in the thirteenth century. Key mechanisms by which the idea of holy war was transmitted to Poland are examined and compelling evidence is provided that the Polish elites were highly familiar with, and receptive to, the idea of holy war. The author demonstrates that the Polish elites were deliberate participants in Christian holy wars and undertook various crusading activities during the twelfth century, a new interpretation and at variance with the traditional position of the Polish historiography. The influence of the idea of holy war on the
actions of the Polish dynasts, and the central role of women in the establishment of crusader family traditions are examined in some detail. This work offers new perspectives for international studies of religiously motivated warfare.

Poszukiwaniom najstarszych świadectw chrześcijaństwa towarzyszą dylematy badań nie tylko historyków, ale i archeologów. Część badaczy uważa, że chrzest Mieszka I był
głównie aktem formalnym, legitymizacją nowej władzy we wspólnocie europejskiej „christianitas”. Państwo Mieszka I, przez oddanie go w opiekę Stolicy Piotrowej (por. regest
dokumentu Dagome iudex) stało się aktywnym podmiotem sceny europejskiej (por. Labuda 2003; w cytowanej pracy literatura). Ale zarazem uważa się, że wydarzenie to,
aczkolwiek fundamentalne, w perspektywie 1000-letnich dziejów państwa nie miało bezpośredniego wpływu, przynajmniej do końca X w., na proces chrystianizacji kraju.
Tym samym przyjmuje się, że początek przełomu datować należy dopiero na okres po roku 1000 (czasy Chrobrego i jego następców). Argumentem na rzecz tej tezy ma być
brak poświadczonych archeologicznie świadectw monumentalnych inwestycji kościelnych. Jak rozstrzygnąć przedmiotowe kwestie? Czy archeologia dostarcza odpowiednio
silnych przesłanek wnioskowania w tym względzie? Poniżej przedstawiamy ważniejsze elementy toczącego się sporu oraz blaski i cienie dotychczasowych interpretacji.

Das berühmte Stück (Rep. font. 4 [1976] S. 99 f.; Reg. Imp. 2II, 5 Nr. 703 zu 992 vor Mai) gehört zu den in der Forschung sehr umstrittenen diplomatischen Quellen für das polnische Früh–MA. Hier werden Quellen und Literatur zu Leben und Werken des Kardinals Deusdedit sowie die Quellen zum Kapitel 149 des III. Buches seiner Kanonessammlung, die Victor Wolf von Glanvell in 84 kurze Kapitel gegliedert hat, in tabellarischer Form gesammelt. Das Wort tomus wird bezogen auf eine Privaturkunde auf Papyrus, die ein Notar in Rom unter Papst Johannes XV. verfasst habe, Dagome als korrupte Form von Ego Misica vorgeschlagen und der Terminus iudex mit seiner Verwendung in päpstlichen Schreiben besonders für die Herrschaftsträger auf Sardinien verglichen. Im Anhang (S. 88–94) sind die Dagome–iudex–Bibliographie 1961–2012 und in englischer Zusammenfassung eine neue Übersetzung des Regests beigegeben.

This paper seeks to determine how the ceremony of the baptism of Mieszko I of Poland (ca. 960-992) could have been performed. It presents the development of the baptismal liturgy in the Carolingian times and the then emerging baptismal theology that was also predominant in the Ottonian period. The probable course of the baptism of the Polish ruler is described on the basis of the rite of baptism for a catechumen made from a pagan (ordo ad catecuminum ex pagano faciendum) contained in the Pontificale Romano-Germanicum. The paper emphasises the far-reaching ritualistaion of the sacrament of baptism and stresses the importance of three-time immersion of a catechumen in water, a practice followed also in the Roman Church, the model of proper liturgical practices. Based on the described rite of baptism, the article also assesses whether it was possible to perform the rite in structures now interpreted - on the basis of archaeological findings - as early Piast baptisteries, in which Mieszko I could have been baptised.

Die Historiker glauben allgemein im Gegensatz zu den Sprachwissenschaftlern, dass Thietmars Umgang mit den slavischen Namen in seiner Chronik korrekt war. Am Beispiel des Namens der ersten christlichen Gemahlin Mieszkos I. wird das Problem im historiographischen Überblick erörtert: Nur Thietmar führt sie als Dobrawa, d. h. Bona, an (MGH SS rer. Germ. N.S. 9, lib. IV c. 55, S. 194), während die Vertreter der ältesten Krakauer Annalistik, nämlich die „Annales vetusti“ und die „Annales capituli Cracoviensis“, dieselbe Namensform Dubrouka unabhängig voneinander aus den „Annales regni Polonorum deperditi“ schöpfen, und während Cosmas von Prag, der das Todesjahr (977) der böhmischen Prinzessin vermutlich aus den verlorenen polnischen Annalen überliefert (MGH SS rer. Germ. N. S. 2, lib. I c. 27, S. 49), andeuten, dass sie in Wirklichkeit eher Dąbrówka bzw. Dúbravka genannt wurde.

The present paper constitutes an attempt of shed new light on certain issues connected with onomastic eveidence for the native, i.e. purely Slavonic, origin of the Polish State (chapter 1) and with onomasic problems of the oldest Polish document called "Dagome iudex" (chapter 2). The fundamental part of the paper (chapter 3) deals with the baptismal name of Mieszko the First (reigned ca. 960-992). It is suggested that the first Polish ruler received his second name, Dagome, at his baptism in honour of his holy father Tugumir, the prince of the Stodorians (reigned from ca. 940). The Latin form Tugumir renders the Slavonic bi-copoumd personal name *Tągomir while Dagome (i.e. Tągom) seems to represent a shortened (diminutive-respectful) version of the same anthroponym. This explanation is not only acceptable from palaeographical, philological an d linguistic points of view, but also well justified by all the preserved historical sources,

The article deals with relations between rulers of Poland and Rus’ during early medieval ages. It is presented that the relationships were strictly linked to an issue of socalled Cherven towns, concerning dates: 981, 1018 and 1031. It is stated that Nestor the Chronicler described a historical process in this three dates (out of the three only one date is accurate). It is proved that the other two were probably established by Nestor himself, who was aware from his sources of a rivalry between Polish and Rus’ rulers regarding the boarder land. It is emphasized that the culminating point of the first phase of the fighting was Boleslaw the Brave waiving his claims to the Cherven towns about 992; the second phase ended in regaining the towns by Polish king in 1018; finally the third one when Casimir the Restorer renounced the claims to the Cherven towns.

Wędrując cichymi, uroczymi uliczkami dzisiejszego Ostrowa Tumskiego, trudno wyobrazić sobie, że w odległej przeszłości miejsce to tętniło życiem. Tymczasem dziesięć wieków temu na wyspie mieścił się potężny ośrodek grodowy. Jak doszło do jego powstania? W jakim celu go zbudowano?
Słowo „gród” początkowo oznaczało po prostu ogrodzony obszar, z czasem zaś nabrało znaczenia twierdzy chronionej przez drewniano-ziemne umocnienia. Grody stanowiły zabudowę typową dla obszaru niemal całej wczesnośredniowiecznej Słowiańszczyzny. Wznoszono je, aby utrudnić bądź uniemożliwić wrogowi przedarcie się w głąb bronionego terenu. Stąd grody lokowano na przebiegu ważnych szlaków komunikacyjnych, w miejscach strategicznych, z natury obronnych - na wyniesieniach lub wyspach. Ośrodki grodowe były zróżnicowane; ich powierzchnia wahała się od połowy hektara do kilku, kilkunastu, a nawet kilkudziesięciu hektarów. Wygląd umocnień obronnych także był różnorodny – w niektórych grodach wznoszono tylko umocnienia odcinkowe, natomiast w innych odkryto nawet kilka pierścieni wałów. Do ich budowy wykorzystywano surowiec dostępny w bliskiej okolicy - drewno, ziemię, glinę, kamień.
