This article introduces student readers to the realm of the interdisciplinary, with a primary focus on the humanities. We first introduce interdisciplinarity and other related terms as concepts. We then present eight specific examples, on which we illustrate interdisciplinary research. Finally, we address the question of when one should be interdisciplinary.

Interdisciplinarity is an advocacy of multiple disciplines, not the elimination of curricular subjects, as one might mistakenly infer. In other words, a solid disciplinary base is a prerequisite for the development of interdisciplinary projects. At the same time, disciplines are historical products of scientific development, being epistemological tools of scientific practice and political institutional arrangements for the control of knowledge. The knowledge related to interdisciplinarity builds, in the social environment, a relationship established across disciplines, and can be inserted in schools through projects and comprehensive work. Such projects can be observed in some universities. The use of interdisciplinarity in science and technology courses offers precious opportunities for students to solve problems, effectively building and consolidating knowledge in a learning process capable of inserting them in the labor market. Music is a multifaceted phenomenon: beyond addressing our auditory channel, the consumption of music triggers further senses. Also in creating and communicating music, multiple modalities are at play. Next to this, it allows for various ways of interpretation: the same musical piece can be performed in different valid ways, and audiences can in their turn have different reception and interpretation reactions towards music. Music is experienced in many different everyday contexts, which are not confined to direct performance and consumption of musical content alone: instead, music frequently is used to contextualize non-musical settings, ranging from audiovisual productions to special situations and events in social communities. The Anthropocene is a proposed geological epoch that marks the significant impact of human activities on the Earth's ecosystems (Lewis, Maslin 2015). Humanity currently faces many interwoven challenges and traps arising from intricate interactions between humans and their environment. These challenges and traps, known as polycrisis in the Anthropocene, represent one of the greatest challenges for research across various scientific disciplines. This paper explores polycrisis in the Anthropocene as a critical research agenda for geography, discussing its conceptualization, importance, and possibilities for study from a geographical perspective. The concept of polycrisis has not been adequately addressed in the geographical literature. Geography offers a rich heritage through its various subdisciplines. This paper will discuss how these subdisciplines and other related disciplines could be integrated into the geographical study of polycrisis. This discussion will consider the ontological delineation of polycrisis within the context of geographical research. The main idea of this paper is that an ontologically highly complex and hybrid object of research such as polycrisis provides an opportunity for a shift from the subdisciplinary fragmentation of geography to the application of a postdisciplinary perspective. The main research motivation is to strengthen the social relevance of geography in the context of the quest for global sustainability.

The LabEx DRIIHM is a research network that gathers together 13 Human-Environment Observatories (OHM) focused on anthropogenically modified socio-ecosystems in France and worldwide. Within the open science context, a Research Data Infrastructure (RDI) was implemented brick by brick to describe, visualize, and disseminate multidisciplinary long-tail datasets produced by the DRIIHM community. The RDI contains both tools and standards at the network scale, and specific tools at the individual observatory scale. This paper describes the building blocks of the RDI and analyses its strengths and challenges on the basis of engineer feedback and user surveys. Recommendations for improving the RDI, better measuring its effectiveness, and enhancing open science awareness, have been formalized for the SO-DRIIHM project that will start in 2020. This paper examines the shared semantics among diverse Design definitions to identify its semantic core and discusses several dilemmas that make a clear boundary for defining Design difficult and multifaceted. The research provides evidence that there is a diverse understanding and usage of the term Design. However, shared word-groups inherent in the definitions provide a family resemblance or bundles of interpredictable attributes for a shared comprehension of Design. Furthermore, a thematic analysis revealed five dilemmas, including Complexity, Zeitgeist, Expertise, Identity, and Disciplinary Perspective, making defining Design multifaceted. While activities and practice differ in diverse disciplines, the fundamental human capacity of productive or design thinking of determining a purposeful and meaningful (end) design (means) is shared among diverse professional disciplinary practices.

This paper advances a behavioral perspective on the existence of futures markets. The proposed approach extends and complements the existing framework by focusing on the interorganizational relationships between buyers and sellers. We show how decision-makers' risk attitudes and risk preferences determine contract preferences, and how potential conflicts in these contract preferences may hamper subsequent business relationships between parties. Futures markets can therefore be viewed as third-party services with the ability to solve potential conflicts in decision-makers' contract preferences. Our approach explains why we observe marketing channel structures despite the different contract preferences of the parties involved. The expansion of theory in this direction is particularly useful in understanding how behavioral elements such as risk attitudes and risk perceptions, along with marketing institutions like futures markets, shape interorganizational relationships.

The on-going race towards innovation and growth, continuously sustained by new products, has shaped a "throwaway era" overwhelmed by waste. The European economy is surprisingly wasteful in its model of value creation and sustains a take-make-dispose system. To face with this challenge, the European Waste Framework Directive suggests a hierarchy for waste treatment based on the 3R: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. This paper aims to present the REVALUE research program. REVALUE contributes to the Reduce and Reuse objective as it proposes local and adaptive strategies articulated around repair workshops. It is based on the assumption that improving collaboration between producers, citizens, repair workshops and public actors enables the emergence of eco-innovative waste management at a local scale supported by adapted business models. In 2005, David Lowenthal commented on the dissimilar approaches to natural and cultural heritage and how these differences impact the protection and management of these heritages. His analysis touches on the western European perceptions of nature and culture that go back to the Age of Enlightenment. In his article, the motivation for safeguarding heritage stands out, as nature conservationists emphasize the long-term economic or ecological benefits, while cultural heritage managers point towards cultural or aesthetic benefits (Lowenthal 2005: 87). Others have made similar statements, some eight years later, calling the divide between the domains a fundamental error (Renes 2013; Harrison 2013).

Annotation: The aim of the thesis " Methods of Social Work in Families with a Child in the Terminal Phase of a Disease" is to answer the basic research question, which reads: "How do the social workers of selected Prague organizations focusing on child palliative care perceive the application of methods of social work with child clients in the terminal stage of the disease? " A partial aim of this thesis is to describe the current state of child palliative care in the Czech Republic. This article outlines major trends in the development of social semiotics during the last four decades of its existence. The starting point was the interface between functional analysis of the semiotic system of language and the structural interpretation of language as a social system. Their convergence provided the basis for further developing an interdisciplinary domain of social semiotics. Michael Halliday’s book “Language as social semiotic: The social interpretation of language and meaning” (1978) gave an initial impetus to exploring the interface of semiotic and social. Ten years later his approach was reinterpreted by Bob Hodge and Gunther Kress in “Social Semiotics” (1988).
