Partnerships

The Australian Council for Health, Physical Education and Recreation (ACHPER)’s National Strategy (2014-2016) lists four strategic priorities, which includes; ‘to identify and promote broader ACHPER collaborations and partnerships’. The International Council for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, Sport and Dance (ICHPER-SD) shares vision and purpose with ACHPER and PENZ (Physical Education New Zealand), specifically with an international focus. Hence, ACHPER, PENZ and ICHPER-SD, working in collaboration, compliment and strengthen one another in promoting active and healthy living, as evidenced throughout history.
The umbrella international organisation ICHPER was first conceived in 1950, and officially founded in Rome, Italy in 1958. The theme of the first ICHPER world congress was ‘Child Health and the School’. There have since been 36 world congresses, 32 regional congresses and numerous forums, conferences and symposia. The ICHPER name was extended to include ‘Sport’ and ‘Dance’ (ICHPER-SD) in Yokohama, Japan in 1993. The latest congress, the 56th ICHPER-SD Anniversary World Congress & Exposition was recently held in Bahrain (December, 2014). ACHPER was formally known as Australian Physical Education
Association (APEA) and the name change was a direct result of the ICHPER-SD first and only world congress to be held in Oceania (Sydney, 1970). Some may remember the
ICHPER-SD (Oceania) first Regional congress, held in Wellington, NZ in 2006. The title of the 1970 Sydney world congress was 'New Endeavours in Physical Education, Health Education and Recreation', it was of international significance, the best attended conference in the history of APEA and a milestone for ‘Health, Physical Education and Recreation’ (Kirk & Macdonald, 1998). Proud ACHPER member and ICHPER-SD Vice-President
(representing Oceania region), Dr. Timothy Lynch, shares the strong history, direction and opportunity for working collaboratively with one of the oldest, largest and most prestigious international umbrella organisations.

Because the challenges of the 21st century are daunting, the Sustainable Development Goals aim for change at the level of the planet, a veritable seismic shift. Information and communication technology provides the most powerful tool yet: properly deployed, directed, and extended, it can be a tool for common good and accelerate action on the global goals.

Sustainability partnerships were the Type-II outcomes of the 2002 Johannesburg Summit, which promised increased effectiveness in and wider participation to global environmental governance. They have quickly become the main form of collaboration between UN and non-state actors. This groundbreaking book uses the results of quantitative and qualitative research to analyse sustainability partnerships and their role in environmental governance. It focuses on the origins of and the rationale behind the concept of 'public-private partnership'. With a combination of post-structuralist discourse theory and interpretative methods such as historical discourse analysis and ecocriticism not previously used in studies on partnership, Aysem Mert, examines three discourses that have rooted into the logic of partnerships: privatisation of governance, sustainable development, and democratic participation. Ultimately, Mert argues that these discourses help understand the potential as well as structural limitations of sustainability partnerships. This revolutionary book will be useful to researchers of environmental governance, transnational and global studies looking for an empirical and analytical interpretation of the topic. Political theorists and philosophers as well as discourse analysts will also find the theoretical and methodological perspectives to be of interest.

This research, conducted by the author when a Senior Researcher at Newcastle University, UK, was funded by a UK governance organisation to help them assess, integrate and improve their understanding of the governed population.

ABSTRACT: Governance organisations have been urged to develop more holistic evidence-based approaches with partners to better deal with issues affecting the governed population. This presupposes an understanding of the population, yet there has been little research work addressing how governance organisations come to understand their governed population, nor how this understanding can be improved upon within such organisations.

This case study examined in-depth how understanding of a governed population was developed within one UK local governance organisation and it explored how such understanding might be developed and improved through more holistic and evidence-based organisational learning within the organisation and its governance partnerships.

The research methodology involved placement within the governance organisation, participant observations on several projects and innovative initiatives, observations within, across, and outside the organisation, and also interviews with varied key stakeholders.

The study examined:

- stakeholder engagement and networks
- current and varied understandings of the population
- mechanisms actually used for developing understandings
- the influence of context on organisational learning

and analysed these to arrive at a recommendations to improve organisational understanding of the governed population.

In the case studied, significant strengths were found: including innovative past learning trials for development, extensive ongoing networking activities, and many varied and accumulating quantitative datasets available across partnerships.

However, entrenched organisational approaches and practices constrained the development of holistic evidence-based understanding, for instance: the absence of systematic maintained collective learning processes; weak recording and forgetting of understandings; methodological exclusion of stakeholders from the development of understanding; the relative neglect of qualitative data, explanations, investigations, interpretations, and reflexivity; and also implicit organisational acceptance of such limitations and low aspirations.

Nonetheless, untapped opportunities existed to enable change including: latent practitioner knowledge and innovative management champions, the desire for improvement and raised aspirations within learning networks, and the development potential of alterative learning approaches.

It was concluded that more holistic evidence-based understanding was possible, but required new learning approaches beyond those then in use in both local government or academia.   

Recommendations are made to utilise and develop improved organisational learning approaches trialed and reported in the case study.

It is argued that the case study findings, conclusions, and recommendations may be applicable to other similar local governance organisations and partnerships that seek to better understand local populations, services and interventions.

The Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) is the current and developing environment in which changing technologies and trends such as the Internet of Things (IoT) and artificial intelligence (AI) are changing the way governments function. Governments are increasingly facing new risks and opportunities due to the advancement of the 4IR. Governments need to find ways to adapt to the 4IR. Innovation is a prerequisite for adapting to the 4IR. The aim of this article is to determine the level of public service delivery innovation (SDI) in South Africa in the context of the 4IR. The analysis in this article is based on secondary data and documentary analysis, including unsolicited government documents, reports and legislation, and authoritative scholarly literature. A number of innovation measures for improved service delivery have been adopted in South Africa. These efforts are not, however, embedded within the wider public service, and efforts to improve SDI should be considered. In a global environment of resource constraints and constant change, open governance through multi-stakeholder collaboration may present strategic opportunities to facilitate innovation. The aim of these initiatives is to enhance transparency and accountability, and to facilitate public service delivery and citizen participation

This article describes the theoretical and pedagogical background and results from the first semester of a service-learning program for English learners at a public Moroccan university and the local high school. This study fills a gap in the literature related to service-learning practice and outcomes in Morocco and the Arab world in general. The results of the program, based on student reflection journals, evaluation surveys, focus groups, and final course outcomes, showed overlap with the impacts predicted by previous studies, with some notable particularities for the Moroccan context. The initial results of the program are promising, and an expansion of the program combined with a long-term study will continue in future semesters. Service-learning's impact on civic education and civic actions are also explored with results that are both positive and troubling for the region.

The purpose of this study was to explore the role of networks in the internationalization process of firms from emerging economies using Nigeria as a case study. A qualitative approach was employed to realize this purpose by using a sample of eight (8) top executives serving in four (4) leading Nigerian multinationals headquartered in Lagos. The participants had over 15 years of experience working with their respective firms in varying capacities. The study revealed that both social and business networks played critical roles in the internationalization of the investigated multinationals. However, it was observed that as much as social relationships remained crucial, they seemed less influential than the business networks in the subsequent international expansion activities of the firms. The findings contributed to the knowledge by providing insights into the international expansion patterns of Nigerian companies rarely found in empirical studies. By implication, multinationals are to embrace the relevant best practices for developing and managing firms' relationships with other stakeholders. Among the key messages are: prepare well, approach professionally, invest time, take a long-term view, learn from successful, failed and struggling relationships, and exit with least acrimony.

This article examines the developmental process of cooperative interorganizational relationships (IORs). Framework is focuses on formal, legal, and informal socialpsychological processes by which organizational parties jointly negotiate, commit to and execute their relationship. The framework is elaborated with a set of propositions that explain how and why cooperative IORs emerge, evolve, and dissolve. The propositions have academic implications for enriching interorganizational relationships, transaction cost economics, agency theories, and practical implications for managing the relationship journey. IORs include strategic alliances, partnerships, coalitions, joint ventures, franchises, research consortia, and various forms of network organizations. Most research been focused on the antecedent conditions or structural properties of interorganizational relationships in comparison with other governance forms. Framework present useful insight about conditions leading to formation of IORs. Research was provided with assumptions trough four concepts for explaining how cooperative IORs emerge, grow, and terminate over time. Knowing the inputs, structure, and desired outputs of a relationship provides a useful context, where process is central to managing IORs. Managers need to know more about input conditions, investments, and types of governance structures required for a relationship. The ways in which agents negotiate, execute, and modify of an IOR strongly influence the degree to which parties judge it to be equitable and efficient. These processes also influence motivations to continue in, or terminate, the relationship over time (Friedman, 1991). CONCEPTUAL BACKGROUND Ring and Van de Ven (1994) assume that business conditions and motivations exist, which are sufficient to cause two or more organizations to explore exchange using a cooperative IOR governed by a relational contract. Organizational parties desire to create a cooperative IOR that facilitates high commitment relations (Helper & Levine, 1992), but produces efficient and equitable solutions to conflicts as they arise. starting conditions was in assumed with four key concepts: (a) uncertainties inherent in a cooperative IOR, (b) assessments based on efficiency and equity, (c) need for internal resolution of disputes, and (d) importance of role relationships in cooperative IORs.

For media companies in a variety of sectors, including news, music, broadcasting, film, games, and events, developing a coherent social media strategy is paramount to survival in the digital age. Yet partnering with the likes of Facebook can also be a Faustian bargain: Media companies gain a deeper knowledge of their audiences and a broader access to them but simultaneously sacrifice the control and centrality they enjoyed in the era of mass media. The net effect is that content providers can grow their businesses in absolute terms but still are relegated to being tangential players in the eyes of consumers, and subordinate in status compared to the social media giants.

This report will demonstrate how online media companies enter into these bargains, and how they evaluate the strategic dimensions of social media. Key questions include:

What are the benefits of partnering with Facebook, Twitter, Google, or Pinterest?
What are the “pain points” that characterize these partnerships?
What downsides are media companies willing to accept in exchange for the upsides?
The 10 executives interviewed for this report are from a range of media sectors. They offered a fascinating glimpse into the intersection of traditional media and social media, revealing opportunities for innovation and growth as well as a number of risks and threats. Ultimately these interviewees described a situation of turbulence and change in which powerful companies thrive or fail depending. Success depends on how effectively they can predict and accommodate the ever-changing ambitions, whims, and reversals of their social media “partners,” and of the millions of customers who use social media to discover and share the content they love with others in their networks.

Despite the many benefits that accrue from working with social media partners (e.g., customer acquisition, retention, authentication, and analytics), the pain points are numerous. They include:

- Lack of control over the consumer experience
- Consumer data and privacy issues
- Unstable and frequently changing platforms
- Poor partner relations
- Mistrust over code
- Limited research and analytics

In this era of education reform, school counselors are among educators being held accountable for the academic achievement of minority and poor children. School counselors in urban schools serve a disproportionate number of minority and poor children at risk for school failure. Urban school counselors can play critical roles in engaging their school’s stakeholders in implementing partnership programs that foster student achievement and resilience. This article discusses team facilitator,  collaborator, and advocacy roles and strategies for urban school counselors and specific types of partnership programs they need to promote to foster academic achievement and resilience in minority and poor students.

This chapter investigates a successful teacher education programme in the UK, awarded 'Outstanding' by England's Offi ce for Standards in Education, Children's Services and Skills. Furthermore, the success of the programme was explicitly contributed by established partnerships with nearby schools. This course, at the time, was not offered within Australia. This study offered valuable insight into a successful primary teacher education programme/course, illustrated good practice, and subsequently, offered possible improvements to the preparation of pre-service primary teachers in Gippsland, Australia.

Although researchers have encouraged further exploration on the causal links between Information Technology (IT) investments and a firm’s competitive advantage, outcomes of empirical studies have been non-conclusive. This is to a certain extent owing to the omission of IT-business strategic partnership (also known as strategic alignment). Indeed, strategic alignment has emerged as one of the most
important issue facing business and IT executives all over the world. Importance aside, what is not clear is how to achieve and sustain this harmony relating business and IT. Therefore, scholars have continuously called for research that addresses the antecedent factors that lead to the alignment. In addition, some scholars have called for further adjustments to the concept of alignment by applying new theoretical approaches which have not been explored in the field of information systems (IS). Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to provide a detailed roadmap in which practitioners can use to understand the resources required to realize the potential values of their IT investments. This could be achieved by
presenting further insight to the factors that could lead to strategic alignment; and investigating the relationships among strategic alignment antecedents, strategic alignment and competitive advantage.

Museums are increasingly engaging in partnerships with other organisations both internal and external of the sector. Partnerships are becoming a standard within the museum sector, guided by mission statements, decreases to funding, and urges from sector leaders. Likewise, participation is also becoming an expectation within the new museology framework. The practices of partnership and participation are not unchallenged within the sector (Dodd & Sandell 2001), but are developments of modern museums that are public-focused. Within the last decade, policies and programmes have widened to include partnerships with prisons and prisoner art exhibitions that involve the source community. This study explores how partnerships between museums and prisons function as well as takes a critical look into how incarcerated artists participate in exhibitions of their work by looking at two case studies: Cell Block 7 Museum (USA), and The Big Issues Project (UK).

The purpose of this study is to explore what the role of a health and physical education (HPE) specialist teacher in the primary school entails. The new Australian Curriculum: HPE Framework requires schools and teachers to implement the HPE key learning area. Many self-perceived physical education (PE) teachers have voiced concern about not knowing how they go about this. This research investigates ‘How PE teachers best become HPE teachers?’ We are reminded by Kirk that this is not the first time teachers have implemented this very change in Australia. Many similarities can be drawn between the recent national Australian Curriculum: HPE and the 1994 HPE National Statement and Profile, which provided a foundation for the construction of the 1999 Queensland HPE (P-10) Syllabus. As recommended by Kirk this study ‘look[s] to the past for lessons about the present and where we might be heading in the future’, by investigating school responses to the 1999 Queensland HPE (P-10) syllabus and curriculum documents. Within the constructionist paradigm, an interpretivist study was conducted. The methodology chosen to construct meanings through capturing the context of each school was ‘evaluative’ and ‘multiple’ case study. The sites for the three case studies involved: one small; one medium; and one large-sized Brisbane Catholic Education primary school. The three case studies were selected as representative of different demographics and the methods engaged so as to enable precision of details were semi-structured interviews, reflective journal, observations and document analysis. Data gathered suggest that enacting the HPE key learning area is very achievable. Implementation is enhanced by HPE leadership, underpinned by clear communication. More so, barriers can be overcome through professional development and support. This study is significant nationally, and the findings may be of wider international interest. It models how school leaders can optimise the health opportunities within their context and models how PE teachers can become HPE teachers.

It is widely recognised that the long-term preservation of migratory birds can only succeed through international concern. Nevertheless, the role of cooperation in migratory species conservation is not fully defined. In addition, the benefits of cooperation towards sustainable nature conservation it is not clearly stated.

This dissertation contributes to the field of global biodiversity conservation by providing an original overview of the role of cooperation. Through the case study of the RSPB, BTO, WWT and JNCC in the UK, it illustrates the importance of partnerships in conservation management and policy, regardless of the scale they are implemented on.

A triangulation enabled to identify the benefits of cooperation through a Stakeholder Analysis, and confirmed them in an Impact Assessment. The Stakeholder Analysis allows a clear understanding of the role, objectives and individual functioning of each organisation whereas the Impact Assessment highlights practical benefits of cooperation and showed whether its outcomes were sustainable.

The analysis shows positive outcomes for the sustainable conservation of migratory birds in particular economic, social and environmental benefits. In addition, participation is enhanced through the involvement of a large range of actors. Overall, the links between the different spatial scales of the environment, from global to local and individual levels, are improved.

Furthermore, collaborative processes have a positive contribution towards global biodiversity conservation. Additionally, they improve communication, exchanges and mutual understanding, reducing the probability of conflicts.

The field of men’s pro-feminist organising continues to build global momentum. Boys
and men are both capable, and interested, to take action to support the feminist
movement. This article explores the experiences of five men active in pro-feminist
organising, focusing in particular on their ways of building solidarity and alliances
with women’s rights networks. The current context of men’s pro-feminist organising
and the ways in which alliances are being forged with women’s rights networks will be
explored, demonstrating a diversity of approaches. The challenges are many,
particularly as women’s rights networks find themselves in a hostile funding climate,
and ‘men’s rights’ groups continue to delegitimise women’s rights and deny the
existence of gender inequality. Despite these challenges, pro-feminist men’s organisations
are employing strategies to enhance relationships with women’s rights networks,
and ensure their efforts retain feminist at the core. The importance of self-reflexivity
and listening for pro-feminist men to operate in feminist spaces will be stressed, as well
as to build broader coalitions and create additional resources for gender equality work.

This study examines the role of partnerships, institutions and governance arrangements in building cut flower farmers' innovation capabilities. It interrogates whether partnerships between farmers (both small scale and large scale) with exporters contribute to building the farmers' capabilities; how the institutional (contractual versus non-contractual) and governance patterns (captive versus relational) influence the ability of such partnerships to enhance farmers' capabilities and the role of other actors (research institutes, universities, regulatory agencies, input suppliers and NGOs) in supporting these partnerships and contributing to building farmer capabilities. This focus was motivated by the declining performance of small scale farmers in Kenya and the fact that small scale farmers appear to be excluded from high value cut flower export business. This review highlights a selection of the research that has taken place over the past year at Plymouth University focusing on building a sustainable future. It is drawn from the Plymouth University abstracts submitted to Sustainable Earth 2016 which took place on 23 and 24 June 2016, and outlines staff and student research from a variety of disciplines at the University. The review is framed around the 9 challenges presented at the conference: health and wellbeing; biodiversity and conservation; cities and communities; water; energy; production and consumption; climate change; resources and education. Each challenge begins with an overview focusing on the local, national and global context written by those who presented theme introductions at the annual conference. These are followed by abstracts which were submitted and presented at the event, along with news stories from throughout the year. This paper critically analyzes a community collaborative approach for implementing Health and Physical Education (HPE) lessons within Gippsland primary schools (Victoria, Australia). The rural community collaborations reflected upon are embedded within the Victorian Department of Education and Early Childhood Development (DEECD) ‘School Centres for Teaching Excellence’ (SCTE) initiative and are timely with the current curriculum reform in Health and Physical Education. The purpose of this paper is to reflect on and share the experiential learning offered where the curriculum is relevant, engaging, contemporary, physically active, enjoyable and developmentally appropriate for all stakeholders; namely university pre-service teachers, primary school children and primary teachers. It is envisaged that through sharing the various dynamics involved in a SCTE program, educators may benefit and subsequently consider the suitability and possibility of establishing similar collaborations within their context.

This qualitative research article explores New Zealand media convergence in an increasingly digital media environment. It considers media ownership convergence in the context of the Commerce Commission's merger rulings in 2017. However, the focus of the research is on other kind of convergences. There is a lack in New Zealand academia of research in this field, and this article aims to help fill the gap. The research maps evolving convergences within New Zealand media sector by utilising Rick Gordon's (2003) concepts of convergences as its analytical framework. It utilises document analysis method, and the primary data is collected from academic reports, corporate and government documents and news articles. The article finds that beyond ownership convergence, tactical and structural convergences are rapidly expanding in New Zealand media sector, and these arrangements may well expand as the Commerce Commission has denied major mergers. Content-sharing between media organisations has become more common because of the increasing importance of audience size and website traffic.

This chapter focuses on maintaining employment in the sector of small and medium-sized enterprises, which is crucial for the functioning of the economy. However, in an economic crisis, the changes in the area of employment of workers often become the foremost way of adapting to declining financial resources, which are the result of reduction of interest in the offer of the organisation by the customers. These actions had proven to be particularly evident in the case of global financial and economic crisis, which also affected the Polish economy after 2008.
The chapter suggests that the layoffs lead to rise in unemployment. Thus, there is a need to promote the outplacement, which is, a technique oriented on responsible dismissals in order to support a smooth transition of laid-off workers to new workplaces. In this way, both employees and companies increase their chances of maintaining competencies and better adapt to market competition requirements.
This chapter explores the characteristics of the labour market policy in Poland, main features of the outplacement in the context of the crisis, examples of the outplacement implementation, plans for further development of the outplacement, and conclusions including directions for further research.

This paper discusses the findings of an evaluative case study of a systemic reform initiative in pre-service science and mathematics teacher education involving faculty and administrators from a college of education, a college of arts and sciences, three community colleges, and five K-12 school districts. This collaborative multi-institutional reform initiative fostered the simultaneous renewal of teacher education as well as K-16 teaching and learning, particularly for the growing English language learner (ELL) populations in the Midwest. The theoretical frameworks that serve as the basis of this study are the report from the Committee on Science and Mathematics Teacher Preparation (National Research Council [NRC], 2001) on educating teachers of science, mathematics, and technology and Goodlad’s model for simultaneous renewal (1994). This integrated framework supports the broad-based goals of this systemic reform and the complex nature of the collaborative process. From the data, the researchers identify the key project outcomes and the reform initiatives that supported these outcomes across the K-16 continuum, and discuss their conclusions and implications for future systemic reform in science and mathematics teacher education.

As part of the series, Qualitative Inquiry: Critical Ethics, Justice, and Activism, Huckaby’s edited book asks us to think about “what might become possible”… with/through critical (post)qualitative inquiry” (p 28)? In the forward, series editor Cannella claims that the volume is a valuable “handbook for rethinking and reconceptualizing qualitative research as a public project,” and readers will be “inspired and encouraged to take action” (p xi). The contributors nudge us away from upholding Eurocentric disciplinary conventions in order to honor and support different epistemological approaches. Huckaby’s edited volume is therefore an important and relevant contribution to better examine, in these troubled times, how activist-scholars may partner with others in our journey to create a more socially just world.

Cooperation in the area of innovations comes down to active participation of enterprises in innovation processes taken up with other commercial and/or non-commercial entities. The data in this respect – in accordance with the Oslo Manual 2005 recommendations – should be collected using the identifying questions: cooperation partners (e.g. competitors, clients, consultants, universities), cooperation objects (innovation types – e.g. product or process specific ones) and the geographical range (local, national, international). It is suggested to apply either binary or ordinal response scale in these arrangements. The recommendations presented in such way are of fairly general nature and can be implemented in various ways in public statistics. The purpose of the presented discussion is to provide the critical analysis of the Oslo Manual 2005 recommendations and a comparative analysis of the suggested (Oslo Manual 2005) and applied procedures (Central Statistical Office; PNT-02, PNT-02/u reports) in terms of collecting information about the cooperation of enterprises with entities operating in their environment regarding innovation oriented processes. The critical observations in this regard were considered the reason for the modification of reports about innovations in the sector of industry and services.

Abstract: This paper shares a health and wellbeing partnership, modelling implementation of physical education (PE) advocated by the United Nations (UN). The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) exemplifies global efforts towards equality,
specifically Goal 3 and 4 address health and wellbeing. The purpose of this paper is to provide insights into cross sector “partnerships”, identified as essential for the implementation of the SDGs. This is significant as the UN acknowledge a present
gap of information on partnerships in action and a need for reporting from the ground level. The project “Best Start: A community collaborative approach to lifelong health and wellness”, began as a partnership between a university and nearby schools and quickly grew to involve Australian Registered Training Organisations, the local health industry, Education departments and sport governing bodies. The collaborations involved pre-service teachers teaching Health and PE lessons to children in a disadvantaged socio-economic area, creating valuable learning experiences for stakeholders.Local and global communities were involved in research and reform. The project creatively optimised resources available through state, Australian and international connections. International partnerships enabled identification of unique contextual opportunities. Programme planning was strengthened with data gathered from an England and Wales Ofsted awarded Primary Physical Education
course. Various methods, including; semi-structured interviews, reflective journal, observations, document analysis, and Student Evaluation of Teaching Units (SETU) were adopted. SETU is valid and reliable data collected by the university for the purposes of research. The findings support that partnerships enable SDG implementation and the research paper offers direction for localisation.

ABSTRACT Green supply chain management and environmental and ethical behaviour (EEB), a major component of corporate responsibility (CR), are rapidly developing fields in research and practice. The influence and effect of EEB at the functional level, however, is under-researched. Similarly, the management of risk in the supply chain has become a practical concern for many firms. It is important that managers have a good understanding of the risks associated with supplier partnerships. This paper examines the effect of firms’ investment in EEB as part of corporate social responsibility in mediating the relationship between supply chain partnership (SCP) and management appreciation of the risk of partnering. We hypothesise that simply entering into a SCP does not facilitate an appreciation of the risk of partnering and may even hamper such awareness. However, such an appreciation of the risk is facilitated through CR’s environmental and stakeholder management ethos. The study contributes further by separating risk into distinct relational and performance components. The results of a firm-level survey confirm the mediation effect, highlighting the value to supply chain strategy and design of investing in EEB on three fronts: building internal awareness, monitoring and sharing best practice.

Partnerships between police and academics have proliferated in recent years, reflecting the increased recognition of the benefits to be had on both sides from collaborating on research, knowledge transfer and other activities. The literature on police–academic partnerships refer to inherent obstacles in bringing the ‘two worlds’ of research and practice together, and reflects an increased recognition on both sides of the benefits to be had from the co-production of research – reflecting a shift from conducting research on police, to conducting research with police. This takes place in the wider context of moves towards evidence-based policing, and the professionalisation of policing in the UK. In this paper we reflect on our experiences of building a police–academic partnership, focusing on: (1) the internal organisational and cultural drivers and barriers; (2) the opportunities offered via ‘in-house’ research by analysts and police officers and (3) evaluation. We highlight the increasing risk presented to both sides by the ‘McDonaldisation’ (Heslop, 2011; Ritzer, 2004) of police–academic partnerships, and the need to thus play close attention to how the identification and prioritisation of research, its conduct, and aspects of evaluation, are managed and supported in practice, with open and transparent dialogue between police and academic partners. The paper draws on qualitative interviews conducted with police officers and police staff, and our observations and reflections while conducting a strategically driven university-police collaborative project with police forces in England.

It is argued that a learning environment underpinned by a strengths-based collaborative approach between universities and schools offers extended pre-service teacher learning opportunities and subsequently enhanced preparation. The term “hybrid space” describes the ideal environment of shared partnership where knowledge is jointly created, and consequently, as too is collaborative egalitarianism between stakeholders. This study investigates a possible “hybrid space” course within Physical Education Teacher Education (PETE) in the UK. While much literature discusses the advantages of the “hybrid space” ideal across education disciplines, high-quality research into PETE hybrid spaces is limited, if not non-existent. Hence, the particular course was chosen for data collection as it advocates intricate connections with schools in the local community. Furthermore, the course was awarded “Outstanding” by the national regulatory authority, England and Wales Office for Standards in Education (Ofsted), one of the major reasons explicitly stated was for its community connections. A qualitative, interpretive study using a case study methodology was adopted to examine the successful primary PETE course. The findings offer insights into the ideal of hybrid spaces in PETE, which appear to benefit various stakeholders within communities. The study is significant as it assists teacher educators from around the world, challenged to rethink their connections between university courses and school field experiences through illustrating a highly successful example.
