Turkish makam maqam classical music

Musical information retrieval (MIR) applications have become an interesting topic both for researchers and commercial applications. The majority of the current knowledge on MIR is based on Western music. However, traditional genres, such as Classical Turkish Music (CTM), have great structural differences compared with Western music. Then, the validity of the current knowledge on this subject must be checked on such genres. Through this work, a MIR application that simulates the human music processing system based on CTM is proposed. To achieve this goal, first mel-frequency cepstral coefficients (MFCCs) and delta-MFCCs, which are the most frequent features used in audio applications, were used as features. Özetçe— Bu çalışmada 6 Klasik Türk Müziği makamının derin anlama ağ yapısı ile sınıflandırılması üzerine çalışılmıştır. Öznitelik olarak Mel ve delta Mel frekans kepstral katsayıları, sınıflayıcı olarak ta Derin Anlama Ağları kullanılmıştır. Elde edilen sonuçlar daha önceki çalışmalarda bulunan sonuçlar ile karşılaştırılmıştır. Çalışmada en yüksek başarım Mel frekans kepstral katsayıları ve derin anlama ağı ile %92.70 olarak elde edilmiştir. Yapılan çalışmanın sonucunda literatürde mevcut olan çalışmalardan daha başarılı sonuçlar elde edilmiştir. While scholarship in Turkish musicology and theory has reached a significant level, little work has been made to catalogue techniques available to the composer of Turkish music. Furthermore, new proposals for development in the tradition of monophonic Turkish makam music are nearly nonexistent. This thesis presents compositional techniques and theoretical models found in the tradition of Turkish makam music, developing them into new proposals for composition and performance. This work focuses on three main aspects of Turkish music: usul and aruz, makam, and polyphony. Usul is defined as rhythmic cycle, while aruz is poetic meter that is used in tandem with usul. Composers have utilized techniques of usul modulation, nested usul, and phasing. Furthermore, the identification of constituent usul cells in usul cycles can be used to derive new modulatory techniques. Modulation of usul is also possible through common aruz forms, while modulation of aruz form can be mediated with common usul cycles. Makam is defined as a modal-tonal complex under a new perspective of its principles in comparison to ancient Greek theory. This leads to a suggested analysis model for notating makam modulation in composition. New possibilities in makam modulation are explored after establishing a method for transposition and modulatory connection. Safiyyüddin’s thirteenth-century model of a transposable perde system is related to practical modulation possibilities, resulting in transposition capabilities upon 17 conceptual pitch regions. Polyphony in Turkish music began in the nineteenth century surrounding political reforms in the Ottoman Empire. A new phase in harmonizing Turkish folk music occurred following the establishment of the Turkish Republic in 1923. Since then, various approaches towards harmonizing Turkish melodies have been used by composers, including tonal harmony, quartal harmony, and contrapuntal technique. This thesis proposes a polyphonic approach that does not detract from the microtonal structure or melodic character of makam, but rather adapts contrapuntal technique of the medieval and Renaissance period to the service of makam. Each main aspect of composition is capable of being used with one another, creating new stylistic possibilities related to makam. To exemplify the compositional techniques discussed, original pieces that highlight innovation in usul and aruz, makam transposition, and polyphonic makam are presented.

ÖZET Tarih sahnesinden, farklı biçimlerde yorumlanan, mirası farklı boyutlarda değerlendirilenler yalnızca siyasi kişilikler ya da Napolyon gibi askeri portreler değildir. Çoğu zaman kültürel aktörler, müzisyenler örneğinde olduğu gibi benzer bir yaklaşımla karşı karşıya kalırlar. Türk musikisinde icra alanında en önemli portreyi oluşturan Tanburî Cemil Bey de kimilerine göre bir gelenek yıkıcı kimilerine göre ise geleneğin benzersiz sesi olarak değerlendirilebilir. Tanburî Cemil Bey, yaşadığı dönemde yarattığı tüm sıra dışı etkiye rağmen sonraki yıllarda büyük bir ihmale uğramış, adeta unutulmaya terk edilmiştir. Oysa 1950'li yıllarda Niyazi Sayın ve Necdet Yaşar gibi değerli genç icracılar onu yeniden plakları üzerinden keşfetmişler, müzikal mirasını yorumlayarak modern çağa taşımışlardır. Bu genç kaşifler Cemil Bey'i yeniden, müziğin anlam dünyasında var edebilmişlerdir. Özellikle Niyazi Sayın, Tıpkı Cemil Bey'in yaptığı gibi klasik tavrın dışına çıkarak yeni bir tavır inşa edebilmiştir. Kısacası yaratıcı sanatçılarda ortak bir özellik olarak nitelendirilen " yaratıcı yıkıcılık " süreciyle bir geleneği yıkmış, yerine çok etkili olacak yeni bir gelenek kurabilmiştir. Bu tebliğde Neyzen Niyazi Sayın'ın Cumhuriyet döneminde Cemil Bey'in müziğinin kültürel taşıyıcılarından biri ve aynı zamanda kaynağa yönelik kâşif bir portre olarak analizi yapılacaktır. ABSTRACT It is not only political personalities or military portraits like Napoleon, which are interpreted in different forms and interpreted in different dimensions of history. Often, cultural actors face a similar approach, as is the case with musicians. Tanburî Cemil Bey who constitutes the most important portrait in the field of performing in Turkish musicals, according to some he is destroyer of tradition and according to others he is as an unique voice according to tradition. Tanburî Cemil Bey suffered a great deal of neglect in the following years despite all the extraordinary effects he had created in his life, and he was almost forgotten. However, in the 1950s, valuable young performers like Niyazi Sayın and Necdet Yaşar discovered it again on their recordings and interpreted the musical heritage and moved to modern age. These young explorers have been able to bring Cemil Bey back to the meaning of music again. Niyazi Sayın, in particular, was able to build a new attitude out of the classical attitude just as Cemil Bey did. Shortly, in the process of "creative destructiveness", which is described as a common feature in creative artists, a tradition has been able to break down a tradition and become a new and very effective one. In this paper, Neyzen Niyazi Sayın will be analyzed as one of the cultural bearers of Cemil Bey's music during the Republican period and as an explorative portrayal of the source at the same time.

In this work, Classical Turkish Music songs are classified into six makams. Makam is a modal framework for melodic development in Classical Turkish Music. The effect of the sound clip length on the system performance was also evaluated. The Mel Frequency Cepstral Coefficients (MFCC) were used as features. Obtained data were classified by using Probabilistic Neural Network. The best correct recognition ratio was obtained as 89,4% by using a clip length of 6 s.

Είναι σαφές πως κάθε απόπειρα μεταφοράς ενός αμιγώς προφορικού μουσικού ιδιώματος στο χαρτί συνιστά ευθύς εξαρχής εγχείρημα μεταγλώττισης, ασχέτως αν αυτή γίνεται στο πεντάγραμμο, στη βυζαντινή παρασημαντική, σε ταμπλατούρα ή σε οποιονδήποτε γραπτό μουσικό κώδικα.
Ο συγγραφέας του παρόντος τόμου επιχειρεί να δώσει αναγνώσιμη μορφή σε πενήντα μελωδίες από την αστική-λαϊκή μουσική παράδοση της Σμύρνης και της Κωνσταντινούπολης (κυρίως), όπως αυτές πρωτοηχογραφήθηκαν, με τη βοήθεια της ευρωπαϊκής σημειογραφίας.
Στη συνέχεια, τα παραπάνω ανώνυμα τραγούδια πρόκεται να αξιοποηθούν ως εργαλεία πειθούς για μια σειρά από μουσικολογικά ζητήματα σχετικά με την ίδια τη διαδικασία της μουσικής καταγραφής, τη χρήση του τουρκικού μακάμ στην ελληνική μουσική πρακτική, τη μετακινούμενη φύση των μουσικών ως αυτόνομων φορέων πολιτισμού και, τέλος, την καταλυτική επίδραση της ηχογράφησης στην Ιστορία της μουσικής δημιουργίας.

Fernand Braudel's theory of the geographical, cultural and historical unity of the Mediterranean World is also suitable for music. Scales/Modes/Makams are the most important element in Mediterranean music. The Phrygian mode and the Kürdi makam 1 are common musical scales in Mediterranean countries which can be called TransMediterraneanizm. They are the exchange, interdependence and transformation of musical practices. This mode's exotic structure might be one of the reasons why it is preferred in Mediterranean societies. Some timbres charm people or communities. Its harmonic attractiveness is the result of its similarity with major tonality and the course of progression. It influences not only the composer but also the listener. This is because the mode has its own friendly and gloomy character.

Öz: Osmanlı padişahları şehzadelik dönemlerinden itibaren hem cirit, güreş, ok akma gibi savaş sporlarına yönelik hem de edebiyat, müzik, hat gibi sanat dallarına yönelik eğitim almışlardır. Yetenekleri doğrultusunda ilerlemeler kaydetmişler, şiirler yazmışlar, besteler yapmışlardır. 28. Osmanlı padişahı olarak tahta çıkan III. Selim de, İlhâmî mahlasıyla yazdığı şiirlerin yanı sıra besteleriyle ve terkip ettiği makamlarla Osmanlı/Türk müziği tarihinde müstesna bir şahsiyet olarak yerini almıştır. Sultan III. Selim, hayatı boyunca birçok yeni makam terkip etmiştir. Bu makamlardan biri de, çalışmanın konusunu oluşturan Pesendîde makamıdır. Bahsi geçen makama ilişkin tariflerin tarihsel süreç içerisindeki gelişiminin incelenmesinin amaçlandığı bu çalışmada, III. Selim'in mezkûr makamdaki eserleri, makamı işleyiş biçimi bakımından analiz edilmiş ve buradan hareketle bir makam tarifi ortaya çıkarılmıştır. Sonrasında XIX. yüzyıldan günümüze kadar Pesendîde makamının tarifine yer veren edvar ve nazariyat kitapları incelenmiş, bu tarifler ile III. Selim'in makamı işleyiş biçimine özgü tarif arasındaki olan benzerlik ve farklılıklar ortaya konulmuştur. Nitel araştırma yöntemi kullanılarak hazırlanan bu çalışmada, literatür tarama, doküman inceleme ve arşiv tarama veri toplama teknikleri kullanılarak elde edilen veriler üzerinde içerik analizi yapılmıştır. Pesendîde makamının karar perdesinde, makamın karakterini ortaya koyan merkez ve diğer önemli perdeler ile seyir özelliklerinde bir değişiklik olmadığı, fakat zaman içerisinde ortaya konulmuş tarifler arasında farklılıklar olduğu tespit edilmiştir.
Abstract: Ottoman sultans were educated on javelin throwing, wrestling, archery as well as art branches of literature, music, calligraphy since their the period of when they were in "şehzade". They made progress in art branches, wrote poetry, composed music. Selim 3rd, who acceded to the throne as Ottoman Sultan the 28th, took place as exceptional person at the Ottoman/Turkish music history with poems-pseudonym "İlhami"-, maqams that composed by him. Selim 3rd, composed many new maqams throughout his life. One of those maqams is the "Pesendîde" maqams which is our academic subject matter. In this subject which is purposed on examining the evolution of this maqam in historic prosses, the compositions of Selim 3rd were analysed and thus a specification of maqam were revealed. It was examined theoritical books and edvar which is included the description of this maqams from nineteenth century to present, was also explained the similarity and differences between this descriptions and Selim 3rd's special methods. This thesis consists of a modal and harmonic analysis of slow sevenbeat composition form, which is characterized by extended modal development and modulation tendency, the richest that the interwar popular music repertoire has to offer. The formentioned characteristics entail from the extended form of the compositions, which motivates melodic and harmonic processing, while slow tempo and rhythmic plasticity provide the proper environment for the refinement of the melody pronunciation. This paper concentrates on the examination of modal and harmonic ideas of this certain sample, in order to export conclusions for the composition techniques of the whole interwar repertoire. It also investigates the relationship between ala turca and ala franca influences of the repertoire, therefore investigating the limits and mutual concession of the theoretical systems used for the more suitable approach of the phenomenon of urban popular music.

Müzikli ortamlarda, sosyolojik ve müzikal perspektifte değerlendirmek ve incelemek üzere; en özgür, doğaçlamaya en çok yer veren, belirli bir düzen ve disiplin içerisinde icra edilen, yorum gerektiren ve sonsuz varyasyonlara dayanan, aynı parçanın her çalınışında farklı tatlar yaratan, kaynaşıma (fusion) açık olan bir müzik biçimi olan cazı seçtik.
  Parçalanmanın, çoğullaşmanın olduğu 21. yüzyılda, özellikle farklı türlerden müziklerin bir arada icra edilişi, yorumlanışı ve birbirleriyle etkileşimini analiz etmek için Türk Makam Müziğinin önemli bir müzik aleti ve aslında bir müzik aletinden çok daha fazla anlamı olan neyle cazı birleştiren Swing À La Turc’u seçtik. Daha önceleri de gittiğimiz, tanıdık ve cazın en iyi icra edilen yerlerinden biri olan Nardis’te, aynı anlamda caz emekçisi Önder Focan ve arkadaşlarının performansını, çalgıların birbiriyle iletişimini ve üretimlerini görmek amacıyla bu konseri tercih ettik.

Onsekizinci yüzyıla kadar Osmanlı’nın genellikle Balkan ve Batı Anadolu bölgelerinde çalınan yaylı
çalgılarından klasik kemençe (tırnak kemençe / kemençe rumî / armûdî kemençe), kabasaz takımlarında
çalınarak eğlence müziği sektöründe yaygın bir halk çalgısı rolünü üstlenmiştir. Zaman içerisinde, sahip
olduğu tınının çekiciliği ve rebap, ney gibi uzun ses verebilme özelliğine sahip olması sebebiyle saray fasıllarındaki
incesaz topluluklarında yerini almayı başarmıştır. Yirminci yüzyıl başlarında İstanbul’a gelen
fonograf ve gramofon ses kayıt teknolojisiyle beraber, dönemin pekçok usta sanatçısı tanınmaya başlamıştır.
Taş plakların yayılmasıyla Tanbûrî Cemil Bey (1871-1916) tarafından seslendirilen pek çok eser ve
taksim kayda alınırken, Aleko Bacanos (1888-1950) da yaklaşık aynı dönemlerde kayıtlar bırakmıştır. Klasik
kemençe için yapılacak karşılaştırmalı bir üslup - tavır incelemesinde en sağlıklı sonuca ulaşılabilmesi
bakımından kovanlar yerine taş plak ve makara kayıtlarından yararlanılması düşünülmüş, bu çalışma için
Tanbûrî Cemil Bey ve Aleko Bacanos örneklemleri seçilmiştir. Her iki sazendenin de iki taksim ve iki eser
icrasının transkripti yapılmış, kullanılan süslemeler, yay teknikleri ve eser yorumlama anlayışları ayrıntılarıyla
incelenmiştir. Tespit edilen icra özelliklerinde bulunan birbirine benzer gruplar kategorize edilmiş, en
fazla, en az ve ortalama sıklıkta yapılan özellikler belirlenmiştir. Yaklaşık olarak aynı dönemlerde müzik
yaptıkları varsayılan biri Türk ve biri Rum iki kemençe üstadının icraları karşılaştırıldığında, birbirine
benzeyen ve benzemeyen tavır özelliklerine ait somut veriler elde edilmiştir. Bu veriler kapsamında dönemin
icrası bakımından farklılıkların ve etkileşimlerin neler olduklarına yönelik saptamalarda bulunmak, bu
çalışmanın amacını oluşturmuştur.

Bu çalışma, Türk musiki geleneğinde ve bu geleneğin önemli bölümünü oluşturan Osmanlı saray çevresinde kadının yerini ve musiki kimliğini, yazılı ve görsel belgelere dayanarak incelemeyi amaçlamaktadır. Çalışmanın ilk bölümünde genel olarak Türk toplumlarında kadın ve musiki ilişkisi incelenmektedir. Arkasından Osmanlı toplumunda ve özellikle saray çevresinde, kadın bestekârlığı ve kadın bestekârların Türk musikisindeki yeri ele alınmakta ve kadının musiki kimliğini ve kadın bestekârlığını anlamak için özellikle saray ve çevresinde musiki eği-timi almış ya da icra etmiş önemli kadın bestekârların musiki kişiliği incelenmektedir.
This study aims to examine the women and her musical identity in Turkish musical tradition and in the Ottoman Court which constitutes its the most important part by means of written and visual documents. In the study's first part, it has been examined in general sense the relationship of women and music in Turkish societies. Later, it deals withs the importance of women musicial identity and women musicians in Ottoman society, court and Turkish musical tradition. In addition, to undestand the women's musical idendity in Ottoman society, the study attempts to examine the musician identity of some women composers and musicians who had performed music or had been trained in the court and its circle.

Özet Türk musıkisi kuramı Ezgi-Arel'den önce ve sonrası olmak üzere ikiye ayrılmaktadır. Ezgi-Arel'den önceki dönem musiki kuramı "Tarihi Türk Musıkisi Kuramı" olarak adlandırılır. Sonraki dönem ise Ezgi-Arel musıki kuramı olarak adlandırılır. Ezgi-Arel musıki kuramı gerek kuramı açıklama yöntemi, gerek tanımlamalar gerek işlev açısından kuramsal yönden tarihi Türk musıki kuramından ayrılır. Tarihi Türk musıkisi kuramını Ezgi-Arel musıki kuramından ayıran bu unsurların başında "Usûl kuramı", "Makam kuramı" ve "Ses sistemi" kuramı gelir. Bu makalede yukarıda verilen üç unsurdan "Usûl Kuramı" araştırma konusu yapılmıştır. Araştırmada tarihsel betimleme yöntemi, kuramsal karşılaştırma yöntemi kullanılmıştır. Araştırmada "Usûl Kuramı"na yönelik yapılan kaynak tarama IX. Yüzyıl kaynaklarından günümüz kaynaklarına ulaşan geniş bir yelpazeyi yansıtmaktadır. Kaynak taramadan ortaya çıkan ilk bilgi usûl ile ilgili bilgilerin üç temel basamakta değerlendirilebileceğidir. Bu basamaklar şöyledir: 1) Tarihsel usûl kuramının oluşumuna yönelik bilginler ve ilgili kuram, 2) Tarihsel usûl uygulamasına bağlı olunması yanı sıra tarihsel kuramla çelişki ortaya koyan bilginler ve ilgili kuram, 3) Tarihsel kuramdan tam ayrılmayı gösteren bilginler ve ilgili kuram. Kaynak taramadan elde edilen bilgilerin ortaya koyduğu bu üç sınıflama sonrasında musıki âlimlerinin usûle ilişkin tanımlamaları verilmiş; ikâ, devir, usûl sözcüklerinin kullanımı değerlendirilmiş; usûl sözcüğünün yerleşmesi ve ölçü sözcüğüne dayalı yabancılaşma ortaya konmuş; musıki âlimlerinin verdikleri ikâ ve usuller karşılaştırılmalı olarak sınıflandırılmış ve bir çizelge ile verilmiş ve Sakîlu'l-evvel (Nim Berefşan), Remel, Fahte, Sofyan, Frenkçin ve Düyek İkâ ve Usûllerinin Safiyyüddin'den günümüze çözümlenerek usûllerde meydana gelen değişimler ad, darb, nakre, yazı ve açıklama yöntemi açısından değerlendirilmiştir. Bu değerlendirmeler dayalı olarak elde edilen bulgular kaynaklar arası tartışma yapılmış ve özgün sonuçlar çıkartılmıştır. Abstract The Turkish Music Theory is divided into two periods: before and after Ezgi-Arel. The theory before Ezgi-Arel is known as "Historical Turkish Music Theory" while the Turkish music theory following this period is named after Ezgi-Arel. The Ezgi-Arel theory departs from the historical Turkish music theory in many ways including the way of explaining the method, the terms used as well as the functioning. "Usul Theory", "Mode Theory" and "Sound System" are the leading elements separating the Historical Turkish Music Theory from the Ezgi-Arel Music Theory. The present study examines the "Usul Theory" and uses historical description and theoretical comparison methods. The literature review on "Usul Theory" used in the work reflects a wide range of resources beginning from 9 th century till present day. The first outcome revealed by the literature review is that the information related to usul can be scrutinised in three fundamental groups. These groups are as following: 1) Scholars and theories related to the establishment of Historical Usul Theory, 2) Scholars and related theories that despite being devoted to the historical usul practice contradict with it, 3) Scholars and related theories that show complete departure from the historical theory. Following the classification of the results of the literature review, this study presents the definitions related to usul by the music scholars; evaluates the use of terms ika, devir and usul; introduces the emplacement of the term usul and the alienation based on the term measure; classifies and tabulates comparatively the ikas and usuls assigned by the various music scholars and evaluates the developments in Sakîlu'l-evvel (Nim Berefşan), Remel, Fahte, Sofyan, Frenkçin and Düyek ikâ and usuls analysisng them from Safiyyüddin till present days using the ad, darb, nacre, writing and explanation methods. The study discusses findings based on these evaluations and draws genuine conclusions.

Bu araştırma, Türk müziği ses eğitimi lisans öğrencilerinin makamsal müzikle ses açma egzersizleri yapabilmeleri için bir öneri niteliğindedir.
Türk müziği ses eğitimi öğrencilerinin egzersizleri piyano eşliğinde çalışmasının, derse giriş aşamasında iken, makamsal müzikteki komalara uyum sağlamalarını zorlaştırdığı görülmüştür. Bu sebeple araştırmanın sorunsalı, “Türk müziği ses eğitimi öğrencilerinin makamsal müzik sistemine göre egzersiz yapamıyor olmaları” olarak tespit edilmiştir. Araştırmada konuyla ilgili gözlem teknikleri ve röportajlara yer verilmiş, birçok ses eğitimi öğrencisinin piyano eşliğinde şan tekniğiyle yapmış olduğu çeşitli egzersizler tespit edilmiştir. Öğrencilerin Türk müziği ses açma egzersizlerine yatkınlık göstermesi ve daha sonra konuyla ilgili yapılacak çalışmalara ışık tutması amacıyla, öneri niteliğinde “alana yönelik makamsal alıştırmalar” hazırlanmıştır.

This study has the characteristics of a recommendation to perform tune up exercises with modes for undergraduates studying Turkish music voice training. It is observed that doing exercises accompanied with piano in the beginning of the class makes it difficult for undergraduates to correspond to commas in modes. Thus, the problem of this study is that, “undergraduates studying Turkish music vocal training cannot do exercises according to mode system”. In this study, observation techniques and interviews related to the subject are included and many exercises that voice training undergraduates are doing accompanied with piano with vocal technique are determined. “Field oriented modal exercises” have been prepared in order to help students in voice training exercises and enlighten further studies to be done in the future regarding the subject.

This monographic essay is dedicated to one of the most mysterious protagonists of the patriarchal style (hyphos) Petros Peloponnesios. Despite the many colourful anecdotes, we only know very few facts about Petros Peloponnesios’ life before he came to Constantinople in 1764. Analysing Petros’ contribution to the hyphos, this essay does not rely on the well-known transcriptions as they were distributed by the print editions in different languages. Recent research has already proved that many ascriptions to Petros are not trustworthy. On the other hand, readers might discover less known compositions by Petros, like his second week cycle and the long oktoechos cycle of cherouvika, which have rarely been printed. They will also be surprised that his composition of the idiomela for the «Doxastarion syntomon» are quite different from the official transcriptions according to the New Method. Another mystery is Petros’ close relationship to the Mevlevi dervishes of Pera (Beyoğlu), where he was adored as Hoca and Hırsız (“teacher and thief”), and his exceptional contribution to Ottoman music by numerous transcriptions of historical makam compositions and more than 100 original makam compositions, sometimes made over a Greek text. The article proves that Petros did not invent the exegetic use of notation nor the transcription of makam music into Greek neume notation. It also proves that many of the works and innovations were officially wrongly attributed to him. Nevertheless, he must be regarded as one of the most remarkable and most gifted Greek Ottoman musicians who did wonders during his short life span between 1764 and his early death during the disastrous plague of 1778.

Summary:

In confrontation with the differences between Byzantine music transmission and the innovations of the New Music School of the Patriarchate since the 18th century, H.J.W. Tillyard reproached the living tradition of Orthodox monodic chant (called hyphos, the "patriarchal style") that it corrupted the Byzantine heritage. Gregorios Stathis reacted by a lecture at Oxford, in which he stressed, that a Western philologist like Tillyard does not understand the difference of music composed according to the makamlar from the one composed according to the oktoechos. He referred to the distinction between external (exoteric) and internal (esoteric) music which was common in Greek music theory of the 19th century, after makam music became transcribed as well into Byzantine neumes since the school of the Archon Protopsaltis Panagiotes Halacoğlu.

Only recently handwritten Greek Anthologies or "Mismagia" had been rediscovered as important sources of Ottoman music. This discovery raises the question how to deal with common prejudices and misunderstandings, which became an obstacle to approach the current tradition of psaltic art and its creative potential.

Müziğin matematik yöntemlerle modellenmesi ve benzetimi olarak özetlenebilecek hesaplamalı müzikoloji disiplininden, birçok kültüre ait müziğin analizinde yarar-lanılmıştır. İnsanlar tarafından elle yapılması çok zaman alacak -hatta bazen pratikte olanaksız- işlemler, bu teknikler kullanılarak bilgisayar desteğiyle kolaylıkla gerçek-leştirile¬bilmektedir. Müziğin daha iyi anlaşılması, öğrenilip öğretilmesi, icra edilmesi, başka müziklerle karşılaştırılması ve Internet ortamında müziğe erişim gibi alanlarda yararlı araçlar sunan bu teknikler Türk musikisi için seyrek olarak çalışılmıştır. Bu müziğin özgün karakteri, modellenmemiş ve dolayısıyla buna uygun verilerle donan-mamış oluşu gibi nedenlerle bakir olan sözkonusu alan, bu çalışma ile zengin¬leş-tirilmeye çalışılmıştır.
Tez metni, Türk musikisinin sistem analizi teknikleriyle yapısını, modellenmesini ve benzetimini sağlayan, tezin yazarı tarafından tasarlanmış ilişkisel veritabanı yapısını anlatan bölümle başlamaktadır. Bu aşama, hesaplamalı müzikoloji tekniklerinin Türk musikisine uygulanacağı sembolik veritabanının inşası ile ilgilidir. Uygulama olarak da bu veriler üzerinde i) n-gram tekniğiyle makam tanıma, ii) istatistik karar kuramı teknikleriyle makama özgü ezgilerin bulunması ve özellikle iii) yapay öğrenme teknik-leriyle otomatik ezgi bölütleme (segmentation) algoritmaları geliştirilmesi derin-lemesine incelenmektedir.
12 ton eşit tamperamanlı (12TET) sistem seslerini kullanan müzikler için MIDI gibi birtakım standartlar uzun zaman önce tanımlanmış, araştırmacılar da bu formattaki veriler üzerinde hesaplamalı teknikleri kullanarak çalışagelmişlerdir. Ancak Türk musikisi için, bu standartları kullanarak doğrudan çalışmaya başlamak mümkün değildir. Çünkü bu müziğin yapıtaşları denilebilecek notalar / perdeler, gerek sayıca gerekse değer ve veri yapısı olarak 12TET’tekilerden oldukça farklıdır. Sözkonusu farklar, özellikle 20. Yüzyılın başından günümüze değin dikkatlere taşınmış kuramsal önermelerdeki çeşitliliğe bakılarak izlenebilir.
Tezde öncelikle Türk musikisini temsil edebilmek üzere önerilmiş özgün format anlatılmış, bu formata uygun geniş veritabanı tanıtılmıştır. Hesaplamalı müzikoloji tekniklerinin kullanımına örnek uygulama olarak da n-gram tekniğiyle makam tanıma, istatistik karar kuramı yöntemleriyle makama özgü ezgilerin bulunması anlatılmış ve özellikle yapay öğrenme teknikleriyle otomatik ezgi bölütleme derinlemesine işlenmiştir. Türk musikisine özgü yapıların da kullanılması sayesinde elde edilen sonuçların literatürdeki algoritmalardan daha başarılı oldukları gösterilmiştir.

In Europe, until the middle of the 18th century, music has been taught in oral tradition. Rise of new technologies and also spreading literacy, printed materials became the most significant part of music education. Whereas, In Ottoman Empire, the tradition 'meşk' was not only a method for teaching instrument and transition of musical repertoire. It is always considered that 'the tradition itself'. Beginning from the middle of the 19th century, with westernization, European traditions leaked into the Ottoman Palace. So the tradition began to change. Starting from the 20th century, method books began to appear.

The majority of old music idioms found in the area of Greece maintains a deep affinity with the musical traditions of the East. The most important dimension of this affinity is probably the multi-modality of melodies. This paper begins with a brief overview of the history of eastern modality, which reveals the evolution from the closed-ended symmetrical and hierarchical early modal systems to the open-ended non-symmetrical modern ones.  This overview is followed by a concise presentation of the ottoman-turkish Makam system, which is the most appropriate for the analysis of melodic modality phenomena found in Greek music idioms. This presentation is based on information found in old sources such as the writings of  Dimitrie Cantemir, Hızır Ağa,  Tanburi Harutin, Abdülbaki Nasır Dede, Panayiotis Halatzoglou, Kyrillos Marmarinos and Panayiotis Kiltzanidis, as well as contemporary ones such as Ekrem Karadeniz, Ismail Hakki Özkan, Fıkret Kutluğ and Murat Aydemir. The presented theoretical tools, combined with those of Byzantine theory, are applied in the analysis of Makam Rast. Rast is perhaps the most important modal entity, functioning as the skeleton of the Makam modal complex, as well as the starting point for each analytical attempt and for each educational procedure, in a long run of many centuries. The theoretical analysis of the aforementioned mode is enriched with performing details drawn from the oral tradition of the so called “melodic attractions”. 

Το κείμενο ξεκινά ορίζοντας την έννοια της τροπικότητας της μελωδίας και δικαιολογώντας ιστορικά τόσο την μεγάλη άνθισή της στην κοιτίδα των μεγάλων πολιτισμών όσο και την σχέση του μεσανατολικού τροπικού συστήματος των Μακάμ με μουσικά ιδιώματα του ελλαδικού χώρου. Ακολουθεί ένα ιστορικό της εξέλιξης των ανατολικών τροπικών συστημάτων από την εποχή των κλειστών, συμμετρικών και ιεραρχικών μοντέλων μέχρι τα σημερινά τους αντίστοιχα. Εξηγείται η σχέση των κύριων και δευτερευόντων τρόπων του παλαιού αραβοπερσικού συστήματος με τις βαθμίδες της «βασικής-θεμέλιας» και της «γενικής» κλίμακας. Αναλύεται η θεμελιώδης έννοια του Σεγίρ (πορείας ανάπτυξης) της μελωδίας και παρατίθενται παλαιές περιγραφές του Σεγίρ του Μακάμ Ραστ από τους Κύριλλο Μαρμαρινό, Ντμίτρι Καντεμίρ, Αμπντουλμπακί Νάσηρ Ντεντέ και Παναγιώτη Κηλτζανίδη. Το πρώτο μέρος του κειμένου ολοκληρώνεται με την εξήγηση των βασικών αναλυτικών εργαλείων του σύγχρονου τουρκικού μοντέλου (ιεράρχηση βαθμίδων, μερκατoρικό-Holdrian σύστημα ποσοτικού προσδιορισμού διαστημάτων, υπομονάδες κλιμάκων). Στο δεύτερο μέρος επιχειρείται μια διεξοδική ανάλυση της τροπικής οντότητας Ράστ χρησιμοποιώντας μεθόδους τόσο του Βυζαντινού όσο και του οθωμανοτουρκικού μοντέλου, με ιδιαίτερη μνεία στις μελωδικές έλξεις καθώς και στις συνήθεις μεταβολές του τρόπου. Εν κατακλείδι υπογραμμίζεται ο ιδιαίτερος ρόλος του Ράστ ως σημείου αφετηρίας αλλά και ως ακρογωνιαίου λίθου όλου του τροπικού οικοδομήματος της ανατολικής μουσικής.

Almost all of Köprülü’s works are scientific answers to the biased judgments of the Western orientalists on Turkish history.  These prejudices are not limited to the general orientalist attitude of the West which defined the non-Western societies as the low-other of the Western civilization. In this orientalist literature, Turks have been defined as a race that made no considerable contribution to the Islamic civilization of which they have been a part. According to this point of view, Turks owe all their cultural achievements to Arabic-Persian-Muslim civilization or the Byzantine Empire. The debates over the origins of Turkish music are the product of this larger context. Surprisingly, the Western orientalist claim that the Ottoman-Turkish music was, in fact, nothing but the later version of the Byzantine music, has been adopted by Gökalp −a prominent ideologue of Turkish nationalism– who at the same time inspired Köprülü as his mentor to write a national Turkish history to refute the biased claims of the Western orientalists.  Moreover, Gökalp’s so-called national music formula served as the theoretical foundation of the Westernizing musical policies of the young Republic which went as far as banning the Ottoman-Turkish music on radio and official institutions. While some musicologists like Arel employed Gökalp’s theoretical formula along with the so-called Turkish Historical Thesis of the new regime to defend the Ottoman-Turkish music tradition, the same Turkish Historical Thesis −which was criticized by Köprülü− was employed by official circles to exclude Ottoman-Turkish music. This article aims to reevaluate these ideological debates over the origins of Turkish music in the light of Fuad Köprülü’s historical view.

Osmanlı insanı için 19. yüzyıl, evveliyatında yaşanan zor süreçlerin artık sona erdiği, rahatça nefes alınan bir dönem değildir. Gerek siyasî gerek içtimaî alanda yaşanan zorluklarla beraber devletin ihtişamlı günlerinin arkaik heyecanları da duyulur; bakılan zaviyeye göre yorumlanabilecek olan toplumun çözülüşü veya toparlanışının aynı anda yaşandığı bir dönemdir. Yine bu zaman diliminde Türk toplumunun ileriye dönük problemlerinin tamamıyla çözüldüğü de söylenemez. Kesin olarak söyleyebileceğimiz bir yargı ise son derece hızlı gerçekleşen değişimin varlığıdır. Karşılaştığı çeşitli badireleri aşmaya çalışırken bir tarafta sarığından vazgeçmeyen "uyumcu" , diğer tarafta istanbulin giyen "değişimci" farklı çevrelerin eski ve yeni pratikleriyle oluşturduğu kültürel birikim, bugünün zihin dünyasının oluşmasında da önemli rol oynar. Ortaylı'nın "İmparatorluğun En Uzun Yüzyılı" olarak adlandırdığı bu dönemde, sanatta ve edebiyatta yeni dinamikler ve bunun sonucunda yeni, geniş bir repertuar da bırakılmaktadır. 19. yüzyılda Dinî Türk Musikisi'nin, kendi kültürel kurumlarında en üretken devrini yaşadığı malumdur. Ancak burada ele alınan konu tekke veya cami gibi dinî kurumlarla organik bir bağı bulunmayan, dışarıdan bir müzisyen için dinî musikinin ne ifade ettiğidir. Başka bir ifadeyle dinî musikinin bu kurumlar dışında da varlık göstermesi düşünülebilir mi? En uzun yüzyılın çalkantıları arasında musiki sanatının özgür ruhlu ve duyarlı dehası Tanburî Cemil Bey'in hayat hikâyesindeki kimi detaylar, var olduğu dünyanın tinsel ilkelerini ve bu dönem insanının kültürel kodlarını çözümlemek adına önemli izler içerir. Cemil Bey örneklemiyle, 19. yüzyılda dinî musikinin yaşadığı gelişmelere farklı bir bakış, Tanzimat aydınındaki dinî eğilimler ve bunun musikiye yansıması bu tebliğin ana temasını oluşturacaktır.

Abstract
For the Ottoman people, the 19th century is not a period in which the difficult processes that have taken place in the past have ended, and they are not easily breathed. Along with the difficulties in political and social life, the archaic excitement of the glorious days of the state is heard; It is a period in which the dissolution or recovery of the society, which can be interpreted according to the observed standpoint, is experienced at the same time. Again, it can not be said that the future problems of the Turkish society have been solved completely at that time. A judgment we can say for sure is the very existence of rapid change. While trying to transcend the various types of problems, "status quo supporter" who does not give up wearing fez on the one hand and "innovator" who wears redingot on the other; the cultural accumulation of old and new practices of different circles plays an important role in the formation of the present world of mind. In this period, which Ortaylı calls "The Longest Century Of The Empire," new dynamics in art and literature and, as a result, a new, wider repertoire are left. Religious Turkish music is in the most productive period in its own cultural institutions in 19th century. However, the issue addressed here is what religious music means for an outside musician who does not have an organic connection with religious institutions such as tekke or mosque. In other words, is it possible to think that religious music also existed outside these institutions? Among the turmoil of the longest century, genius of the Turkish music: "Tanburi Cemil Bey" who the free-spirited and courteous, some details of his life story contains important traces in order to analyze cultural codes of the people of that period and the fundamental principles of the world he belongs. In Tanburi Cemil Bey's example, a different look of the developments experienced by religious music in the 19. century, the religious tendencies in Tanzimat intellectuals and the music dimension of this understanding are the main theme of this paper.

This study presents a catalog of the music manuscripts that are preserved in the İstanbul Üniversitesi Nadir Eserler Kütüphanesi (İstanbul University Rare and Manuscript Collections Library). This library is especially important for its numerous music manuscripts, especially lyrics collections, which include private lyrics codices of famous composers, such as Hafiz Post, Itri, Ebubekir Agha, Sultan Mahmud II. While important books on music theory had remained in the Topkapi Palace Library, the most song-text collections were delivered to the newly established Yildiz Palace. The Yildiz Palace manuscript collection was later transferred to the İstanbul Üniversitesi Nadir Eserler Kütüphanesi, after the establishment of the Turkish Republic.
This catalog includes manuscripts at the İstanbul Üniversitesi Nadir Eserler Kütüphanesi. The catalog incorporates those manuscripts which are catalogued under Ibnulemin Collection, which is also preserved in the same library. Istanbul University Library contains 19,864 manuscripts: 9943 manuscripts in Turkish language, 6967 in Arabic, 1618 in Persian, and 81 in various languages, and the 1255 manuscripts in the Ibnulemin collection. While researching for the Catalog of the Music Manuscripts in the Istanbul University, I went through library index cards following any terms related to music. After that I also investigated all miscellaneous compilations as well as all poetry collections in order to identify texts related to music in those. When I realized that a manuscript that was catalogued as a versified hadith collection is in fact a lyrics codex, I investigated all manuscripts that preserve verse texts. In the end, for the Catalog of Music Manuscripts in Istanbul University Library I ended up scanning through almost 8500 manuscripts in order to identify those texts related to music.
The Catalog of Music Manuscripts in Istanbul University Library presents the descriptions of music manuscripts under seven headings: 1. Works on music and dance; 2. Theory and method related works; 3. Lyrics codices: a. “Fasil” compilations, b. Popular Song compilations, c. Mawlawi ayin-i sherif’s lyrics compilation, d. Hymn compilations; e. Miraciyye compilations 4. Composition notebooks; 5. Biographical dictionaries of musicians; 6. Various topics; 7. Works found in miscellaneous compositions. Under these titles 383 works are described. Four of those include discussions on religion, music and dancing, 11 on music theory, 70 various lyrics codices, 4 composition notebooks, 6 biographical dictionaries and 286 manuscripts that contain chapters or sections that are related to music. The oldest dated work among those is a theoretical work on musical modes Zeynü’l-Elhân fî İlmü’t-Te’lîf ve’l-Evzân which is dated 1484.
The Catalog of Music Manuscripts in Istanbul University Library reflects only a small portion of music manuscripts produced and/or preserved in Turkish manuscript libraries. My hope is that it will benefit researchers whose research relate to the field of Ottoman music.

The change of “traditional” music patterns transformed forms according to the new, rational world vision of the 20th century made permanent with the signature of the composers. Especially, composition for a string instrument filtered the entire sociocultural and musical past of the collective music memory, attributing new meanings to the individual and highlighting individuality; with instrument accompanying voice in a performance earning the former a soloist position. Individuality
referred to as a desire to be distinct from others, to have a unique attitude, to express or tell something different falls within a period in which an era was dying out while a new one was yet to be born. It’s an age in which the individual starts to have a bigger say in oneself, develops their boundaries, increases their personal freedom with an assertive “Count me in” attitude, constructing more with written
text than oral expression. All of these elements help the individual self-actualize with self-governance and reflection within the potential for autonomy that is a product of one’s social environment. Music becomes a major channel of expression bearing social discourse which enables
the individual to express with something unheard of their own journey of
efforts for evolution and awareness thanks to their own talent and creative act. On the social course of modernization, music will renew itself on a different execution practice. This is a novelty in the history of musical execution as well. Tanburi Cemil Bey and Şerif Muhiddin Targan occupied a singular position public life. These two virtuosos built a micro space of music with their own skills and geniuses, maintaining a certain type of invisible aesthetical structure made of sounds independent
from time and society they belong to and in conflict with current general tastes. Creators of style and school for ancient string instruments such as tanbur, kemençe and oud from Ottoman-Turkish musical territories, these virtuosos started to give concerts beyond musical assemblies and lodges, paving the way for a change in not only composition but execution as well. Thanks to gramophone records documenting
the sounds of history, especially their improvisations and compositions; they joined their methods between the past, present and the future with sound, as it were. This paper will focus on the reasons why virtuosity elements started to be incorporated into execution technique, with sociocultural analyses in the examples of Cemil Bey and Şerif Muhiddin Targan who laid the musicological foundation of the great development of execution in the 20th century.

Özet Türk makam müziğinin incesaz topluluklarında onsekizinci yüzyıldan itibaren yerini almış olan klasik kemençe, tınısı ve icra şekilleri bakımından son bir asırda bilgi verebilecek nitelikte ses kayıtlarına sahip ol-muştur. Ses kayıt teknolojisinin ilk örnekleri, yirminci yüzyıl başlarında İstanbul'da fonograf ve kovanlarla kendini göstermiş, kovanlara yapılan kemençe taksim kayıtları Kemençeci Vasilaki (1845-1907) tarafından gerçekleştirilmiştir. Ardından gelen gramofon ve taş plak dönemi ile Tanbûrî Cemil Bey'in (1871-1916) tanbur, kemençe, lavta, viyolonsel ve yaylı tanburla yaptığı taksim ve eser icraları, saz müziğinin gelişmesi yolunda değer taşıyan önemli kayıtlar olarak tarihe geçmiştir. Makara bant, plak ve kaset dönemlerinde ise isimlerini çeşitli albümlerde, radyo ve televizyon programlarında duyurmuş daha fazla kemençe icracısı olduğu gözlemlenmiştir. Bu kayıtlarda yer alan geleneksel taksim formu da tarihsel süreçte giderek de-ğişmeye ve uzun süreli taksimlere dönüşmeye başlamıştır. Kemençe artık tanbur ve ney ikilisine katılmış üçüncü bir önemli üye olarak, beraber taksim yapma anlayışının temsilcilerinden olmuştur. Zamanımıza yaklaşıldıkça dijital ortamlarda "compact disc"lere yapılan kaliteli ses kayıtları ile, kemençe icracılarında ve üretilen albümlerde hızlı bir artış yaşanmıştır. Yirminci yüzyılın sonlarına doğru Türk çalgı icralarında görülen yeni arayışlar, varolanın dışına çıkma ve farklılık gösterme çabaları, zamanla müzik endüstrisi-nin üretimlerinde kendisini göstermiştir. Bu arayışlar çerçevesinde çeşitli müzik türlerine katkıda bulunan klasik kemençe icraları da, taksimlerinde etkileşimler ve değişimler geçirmiştir. Bu çalışma ile son 20 yılın albümlerinde yer alan klasik kemençe taksimleri incelenmiştir. Tespit edilen kişisel albüm sahibi yedi kemençe sanatçısının yayınlanan son albümlerinin analizi ile, taksimler genel ve ayrıntılı olmak üzere iki kategoride incelenmiştir. Genel incelemede; eşlik çalgılar, makam kullanılışı, vasyasyonlar, tablo içerisin-de süreleriyle gösterilmiştir. Ayrıntılı incelemede ise; klasik kemençe üslubunun taksimlere yansıyan en belirgin süslemeleri, dizi niteliğindeki ezgi yapıları ve çift ses kullanımı ele alınmıştır. Böylelikle, klasik kemençe taksimlerinin nasıl değiştiği ve gözlemlenen veriler ışığında geleceğe dair icra yorumlarının nasıl değişebileceği yönünde fikir verici özelliklerin tespiti, bu çalışmanın konusu olmuştur. Abstract Classical kemençe, which has taken its place in the incesaz ensembles of Turkish maqam music since the eighteenth century, has had sound recordings that can provide information in the last century in terms of timbre and performances. The earliest examples of sound recording technology were shown by phonographs in Istanbul in the early twentieth century and kemençe taqsim recordings on the hives were made by Kemençeci Vasilaki (1845-1907). At the beginning of the gramophone period, Tanbûrî Cemil Bey's (1871-1916) tanbur, kemençe, lute, violoncello and stringed tanbur taqsims (instrumental improvisations) and piece performances are important records for the development of instrumental music. In the record, vintage tape record and cassette record periods, it was observed that there were more kemençe performers who announced their names in various albums, radio and television programs. The traditional taqsim form in these records has also started to change gradually and turn into long-lasting ones. Kemençe is now a third important member of the tanbur and ney duo and is one of the representatives of improvisation. Over time, there has been a rapid increase in kemençe performers and produced albums with quality sound recordings made on compact discs. Towards the end of the twentieth century, the new searches in Turkish musical instrument, the efforts to move out of the existing and differentiate from the existing, have gradually manifested itself in the production of the music industry. Within the framework of these quests, classical kemençe performances that contributed to various musical genres have also undergone interactions and 1 Dr. Öğr. This book is a collection of 5 essays. The first is an introduction into the basics of chant transmission, the modal framework within the eight-mode system, differentiated according to Western and Eastern chant genres. The second is an introduction into the labyrinth of the eight-mode system, which was used for a musical art of memory in Byzantine chant. The third analyses the embellished design of a traditional chant: a hymn for St. Peter taken from the Byzantine sticherarion and from the Roman antiphoner, and its elaboration in monodic kalophonia and polyphonic organum.

A second part is dedicated to two living chant traditions: The fourth essay describes the integration of makamlar among Greek church singers of Istanbul, and the final essay is a portrait of two important singers of the Bulgarian Orthodox tradition.

The long-standing conflict between the “Arel-Ezgi-Uzdilek” System and Turkish Maqam Music practice has been established through computer analyses of audio recordings by master musicians such as Neyzen Niyazi Sayın and Tanburi Necdet Yaşar. Results incontrovertibly manifest the delibarate employment of multifarious middle second intervals peculiar to the genre, yet evaded by the current model. These middle seconds are roughly expressible as 2/3, 3/4, and 4/5 tones, and often referred to by the protagonists of the Music Reformation in Türkiye during the early 20th century as “quarter-tones”.

While the frequency ratios of the Pythagorean theory in effect are naturally limited by prime 3, the middle seconds observed in performance and dubbed “mücenneb bölgesi” (the mujannab zone) by Yalçın Tura require the employment of superparticular simple-integer ratios whose numerators or denominators are mathematically constrained by as high a prime as 13. Here, prime-limit denotes the mathematical constraint by the highest prime in the factorization of both the numerator and denominator of a given frequency ratio for any set of intervals in a Just Intonation system.

It is maintained that non-conformance arose because the 24-tone Pythagorean theory in effect was specifically engendered by what may properly be named the ‘Yekta-Arel-Ezgi School’ to ward off these “quarter-tones” which allegedly affliated the Maqam Music heritage to Byzantine & Arabs. It may be said that the ‘Yekta-Arel-Ezgi School’ condoned alienating theory to practice in an effort to save the genre from the disfavour of the new regime.

The author debunks the current model for falling short of accomodating played intervals, and shows that, the 24 tone Pythagorean tuning used in notation and music education embodies only five 2/3 tones and two 3/4 tones between uncommon, hence unrecognized tone pairs – that is to say, at untraversed and inconvenient locations – rendering it a model far from representing actual practice.

The author predicates, furthermore, that historical and contemporary alternatives such as the 17-tone Abjad Scale, late-Ottoman Phonetic Notations like Kantemir, Osman Dede, Harutin and Hamparsum, Arabic 24-tone Scales, Oransay’s 29-tone Tuning, and Karadeniz’s 41-tone subset out of 106 equal divisions of the octave – although most of them settle into a global 106-tone equal temperament grid – cannot favourably reflect the plethora of microtones observed in performance either. Detailed analysis for each of these options is presented herein.

The fact that metallic levers on qanuns called “mandals” – which are manipulated by the executant on the fly to alter the lengths of the courses – are affixed by qanun-makers on these instruments in such a way as to yield 72 equal divisions of the octave due to the common usage of standard electronic tuners imported from overseas, is proof that the widespread “53 equal commas to the octave” methodology is most likely confined to paper, and that, a higher resolution is demanded by performers of Turkish Maqam Music.

Since 53-tone equal temperament does not appear to be applied to qanuns, and dividing the octave into 72 parts is none other than the sixfold elaboration of “twelve equal steps per octave” methodology of Western Music, it henceforth becomes a necessity to devise a tuning which is more compatible with Turkish Maqam Music tradition.

On these grounds, a novel 79-tone tuning has been developed and implemented on a unique custom-made qanun by the author. This one-of-a-kind Turkish qanun was manufactured by Ejder Güleç in 2005, a renown instrument maker in Izmir, and acclaimed by music circles at various occasions. The 79-tone tuning, which has been derived from a subset of 159 equal divisions of the octave, is minutely explained in this work and defended as a solution to overcome persisting issues regarding the accurate representation and consistent understanding of maqamat.

A complementary Sagittal Notation® has been adapted to the 79-tone tuning and explained in this dissertation. With the employment of only three microtonal accidentals in addition to ordinary sharps and flats, it becomes possible to express subtle nuances of pitch in Maqam Music. Also, Sagittal Notation® may serve as a gateway to future maqam polyphony.

As a preliminary approach to 79-tone maqam theory, some main and composite maqams have been notated to demonstrate the capabilities of the 79-tone tuning. Categorizing and redefining maqams as main and composite, as opposed to their division into simple and composite/transposed in “Arel-Ezgi-Uzdilek” theory, is an innovation by the author in this thesis. Problematic maqams such as Hüzzam and Saba are consistently notated with the pitches of the 79-tone tuning.

Compared to other approaches to maqam theory, the 79-tone tuning appears to be most suitable for the notation, transposition, and harmonization of complex 13-limit scales.

19. yüzyılda Osmanlı Devletinde birçok değişikliğin yaşandığı bir zaman dilimi olmuştur. Toplumsal ve idâri alanı etkileyen bu değişim rüzgârından doğal olarak müzik de nasibini almıştır. Yüzyıllar boyunca askerî mûsikî icrâ eden Mehterhâne lağv edilmiş yerine Mûsika-i Hümâyûn kurulmuştur. Dolmabahçe sarayının hânedânın yeni evi ve ülkenin yeni idare merkezi olmasının ardından ise sarayda Türk mûsikîsi ve Dinî mûsikî icrâ eden toplulukların yapısı da değişmiştir. Daha önce Enderûn’a bağlı odalarda hizmet eden mûsikîşinaslardan oluşan bu topluluklar için yeni bir kurumsal yapı oluşturulması ihtiyacı doğmuş ve bu topluluklar Mûsika-i Hümâyûn çatısı altında toplanmıştır. Ancak bu toplulukların idaresi uzun yıllar boyunca müspet kriterlere bağlanamamış ve bu durum zaman zaman toplulukların müzikalitesine olumsuz olarak yansımıştır. Çalışmamız, bu sorunu gidermek amacıyla 1912 ve 1918 yıllarında yayınlanmış iki nizamnâmeyi incelemektedir. Sarayda Batı müziği ve Askerî müzik icrâ etmekten sorumlu Mûsika-i Hümâyûn, Türk müziği icrâ etmekten sorumlu İnce Saz Takımı ve Dinî mûsikî icrâ etmekten sorumlu Müezzinân-ı Hâssa’nın idârî yapısı hakkında ayrıntılı bilgiler içeren bu nizamnâmeler, dönemin müzik anlayışı hakkında da birçok ipucu içermektedir. Bu olguları gözler önüne sermek amacıyla öncelikle nizamnâmeler latinize edilmiş ve nizamnâmelerin düzenlenme nedenleri hakkında bilgiler verilmiştir. Ayrıca nizamnâme maddelerinden elde edilen bilgilerden hareketle mezkûr kurumların müzikalitesi ve dönemin müzik anlayışı hakkında çıkarımlar yapılmıştır.
