Vatican Diplomacy

Jelen kötet a 2015. április 14-én a budapesti Parlamentben megrendezett „Fejezetek Magyarország és a Szentszék diplomáciai kapcsolataiból” és a 2015. június 12-én a Római Magyar Akadémián tartott „Rapporti diplomatici tra la Santa Sede e l’Ungheria (A Szentszék és Magyarország közötti diplomáciai kapcsolatok)” c. konferenciák szerkesztett anyagát tartalmazza.
A kötet első részében a budapesti konferencián elhangzott köszöntő beszédek és protokolláris nyitó előadások kaptak helyet. A központi részben található tanulmányok a budapesti nunciatúra két világháború közötti történetére vonatkozó legfrissebb magyar kutatások eredményeit mutatják be. Az utolsó egység három tanulmánya a diplomáciai kapcsolatok 1990. évi helyreállításának történetét és az elmúlt 25 év bilaterális kapcsolattörténetének kiemelkedő eseményeit tárgyalja.

This volume, entitled The Baroque Papacy (1600–1700), originally contains the material of the early modern European history seminar held by the author at the Péter Pázmány Catholic University. In the Foreword, the author provides a brief review of the paradigm of confessionalisation. The Introduction (I) summarises the impressive achievements of the reform papacy, the main characteristics of the less dynamic baroque papacy and the gradual change in the relationship of the papal Curia with nation states. The first large chapter (II) examines the role played by the Apostolic See in the European political stage. The focus is on the accelerating loss of pontifical power under Pope Urban V III and on the temporary reversal of this trend due to the organization of the Holy League by Pope Innocent XI, which liberated Hungary from 150 years of Turkish rule.Next, the author analyses the social, economic and financial structures of the State of the Church (III). A separate subchapter deals with the college of cardinals, the pope’s court and Roman society, as well as the the papal financial system and its institutions, the sources, types, sums and the balance of revenues and expenditures. Key processes are best modelled by the rise and fall of papal nepotism (IV). The portrayal of the changes in social and economic structures is followed by a presentation of the Curia’s pioneering decision-making system (V), which, however, became increasingly complicated and, at the end of the 17th century, underwent comprehensive reforms. In the course of this is chapter, the author discusses dicasteriums, which originate in the Middle Ages, but focuses on the expanding network of congregations, their operation, structure and competence, and finally examines the network of nunciatures and especially the development of the pontifical State Secretariate. The aim of these three chapters (III–V) is not only to understand the shifts in pontifical policy in the Early Modern Era, but also to shed light on the changes of Roman church administration and church policy as well as the changing relationship between Rome and local church organisations. The last large chapter (VI) contains a summary of the latter two, including precedent cases, key ordinances, legal frameworks, a summary of the technical and organisational problems of maintaining contacts with Rome and finally an analysis of Spanish, French and German church relations as a sample. In the end, the book contains an Outlook on the 18th century, an Appendix with the archontology of popes and chief curial magistrates.

A most kiadásra kerülő okmánytár Magyarország és a Szentszék több mint ezer évre visszanyúló kapcsolatának egy speciális területét, a pápaság tizenöt éves háborúban vállalt szerepének egy szeletét dolgozza fel. Az iratok Gianfrancesco Aldobrandini generális válogatott levelezését tartalmazzák. A pápa unokaöccse három ízben (1595, 1597, 1601) vezette őszentsége hadseregét a magyarországi hadszíntérre, amelynek a működéséhez egyaránt fűződnek sikerek és kudarcok.

A forráscsoportra régen felfigyelt a hazai és nemzetközi tudományosság, ám néhány úttörő kezdeményezést leszámítva idáig nem történt érdemi kísérlet a levelezés kiadására, és sokat kellett várnunk a források monografikus jellegű feldolgozására is. Ez utóbbin változtatott Giampiero Brunelli 2017-ben megjelent könyve (La santa impresa. Le crociate del papa in Ungheria 1595–1601), amely első áttekintő összefoglalását és értelmezését nyújtja ennek a három hadjáratnak. Ezt a narratívát építi tovább az okmánytár, bőséges magyar nyelvű regeszták segítségével nyitva meg az utat az események további lehetséges értelmezése előtt. A kötet segítségével szinte kitapintható közelségbe kerülnek nemcsak a szentszéki erőfeszítések, hanem a háború fő terhét viselő Habsburg kormányzat háborút illető lépései is, amelynek diplomáciai és katonai jellegű tevékenysége egyúttal más megvilágításba kerül.

Aldobrandini generális levelezéséből kibontakozik egy teljes koraújkori hadsereg mozgósításának, a harctérre történő eljutásának, ellátásának komplex és igen nehéz feladata. Ennek megvalósítása kapcsán ráirányul a figyelem arra, hogy az Egyházi Állam civil hadvezérének a tevékenységét milyen hatékonyan segítették a szintén civil, egyházi méltóságot betöltő pápai hadbiztosok. Az ő tevékenységükről még nem született sem forráspublikáció, sem feldolgozás magyar nyelven. A levelek rávilágítanak azokra a buktatókra, amelyek két nagy ellátó rendszer, a pápai és a Habsburg összehangolásának nehézségéből fakadtak, de arra is, hogy az Apostoli Kamara a császáritól eltérően milyen hatékonyan működött, amikor képes volt arra, hogy kb. 10 ezer embert eljuttasson egy ezer kilométerrel távolabb lévő hadszíntérre, úgy, hogy a seregnek maradjon ideje a hadműveletekre is.

A levelezés alapján végigkísérhetjük a harctérre kiérő pápai katonákat a mustrától kezdve a táborig, majd az Esztergom, Vác, Pápa, illetve Kanizsa alatt vívott harcokat. Sőt az okmánytárba bekerültek azok az 1595 és 1597 közötti hadműveleti szünetben született iratok is, amelyek témája a hadsereg áttelelése, illetve az Erdélybe vonulás voltak. Ezek nem keltették fel eddig a figyelmet, bár az említett narrációnak ugyanúgy a részeit képezik.

VIII. Kelemen megkülönböztetett figyelemmel kísérte az eseményeket, és többször is személyesen avatkozott bele kompetenciájától távol eső stratégiai kérdésekbe, amely persze újfent aláhúzza Clausewitz tételét, hogy a háború a politika, és esetünkben – a hitterjesztés – folytatása fegyveres eszközökkel, illetve, hogy ez a háború személyes ügy volt a számára. De kiderül az is, hogy az Egyházi Állam erején felül vállalt – az utókor által máig kellően értékelt – szerepet a háborúban, és annak finanszírozásában. Rómában pontosan tudták, hogy Európa igazi határai nem a tengeren, ahogy a nyugat-európai történészek tekintélyes rész főleg Braudel nyomán máig hiszi, hanem a magyar királyság romjain keresztül húzódtak és húzódnak máig is.

Az okmánytár lényeges és fontos részét képezi a fizetési és veszteséglistákat tartalmazó Függelék, amely elsősorban persze a tisztikarról nyújt tanulságos képet. A száraz, első ránézésre nem túlságosan izgalmas, sőt érdektelennek tűnő név és számsorok olvasása közben azonban gondoljunk csak arra, hogy itt egy több, mint négyszáz évvel ezelőtti élet eleven szövetének egy darabja szakad ki a hadbiztosok és pápai tisztviselők pennája nyomán. Amelyből egyszerre tárul elénk a hitből, isten akaratából fakadó sztoikus belenyugvás a veszteségek felett, a lelkesedés, a halált megvető bátorság, mert a katonák és tisztjeik komolyan gondolták, hogy ők egy igazságos háborút vívnak. De megelevenedik a harcok hevessége, szinte halljuk a katonák kiabálását és jajgatását, érezzük a lőpor füstjét, a sebesülés bűzét, és a falmászás izzadságát is. Kitapinthatóvá válik az elmúlás ellen feszülő emberi akarat, amely a veszteségeket minimalizálni akarja, és a hadvezér józan számítása, hogy csak ép katonákkal lehet a harcot folytatni. Mindezt nem tudjuk meg a császári hadseregről, mivel a hosszú háború magyarországi szakaszáról ilyen átfogó jellegű, a hadtörténeti szempontokat előtérbe helyező, és egy egész hadsereg működésébe mély betekintést engedő, a háborút mintegy alulnézetből megmutató forráskiadás eddig nem jelent meg. Talán ebben ragadható meg leginkább az okmánytár legfontosabb újdonsága.

The volume gives a scientific plan to the forthcoming five years of the HAS-PPCU Vilmos Fraknói Vatican Historical Research Group that focuses on the Hungarian historical research in the Vatican and was established in 2017 as an organic continuation of the Impetus research group. It contains the lectures-turned-studies of the “Hungarian Historical Researches of the 21th Century in the Vatican” symposium of the VIIIth International Hungarology Congress organised by the Impetus research group on the 23rd August 2016.

The chronological and thematic order of the volume’s writings clearly outlines the planned focus and directions of the research group’s researches. The first five studies examine late medieval subject. Ágnes Maléth analyses the diplomatic relations between Charles I and the papal court in the light of sources from the Vatican Archives. Tamás Fedeles provides input to the work of the papal tax collectors by the presentation of the operation of one of them: Péter, son of István, whose person is well-known both for the Hungarian and the Polish research. Kornél Szovák examines how the Turkish question appeared in the supplications handed in the Roman Curia in the fifteenth century. Gábor Nemes processed the late medieval presence of laics and priests from the diocese of Győr in Rome leaning on various curial types of sources. Finally, the study of Bálint Lakatos provides insight into the ceremonial hierarchy of the papal court, in which he examines the place of Hungary.

The focus of the next six studies is the Early Modern Age. Viktor Kanász outlines his plan to reveal the Vatican sources concerning the curial process of György Fráter’s murder, with which he desires to settle the long-standing debt of the Hungarian historiography. Similarly, Péter Tusor drafts the details of his project about the methodical exploitation of the verbals of the seventeenth century canonical examinations. Tamás Tóth deals with this subject for the eighteenth century. Tamás Kruppa analyses the relations of politics and religion in the early seventeenth century on the basis of the works and correspondence of the Jesuit Giovanni Argenti. Béla Vilmos Mihalik also presents a diplomatic subject: the connections of the Holy See and the Court of Vienna at the end of the 17th century, at the time of the Roman legation of Count Georg Adam von Martinitz. Gábor Kisvarga outlines the plan to publish the monograph of Ferenc Galla, which survived in a manuscript, on the missions in the territory under Turkish rule.

The last four studies delineate the third main direction of the investigations of the research group; the Hungarian historical researches in the Vatican about the twentieth century. Krisztina Tóth presents the point of view of the Holy See about the Hungarian royal right of patronage at the turn of the 1920s through the protocols of the Congregation for Extraordinary Ecclesiastical Affairs. Máté Gárdonyi reveals the documentary value of the renewed ad limina reports submitted already not to the Congregation of Council, but to the Consistorial Congregation. Tamás Véghseő provides interesting additions to the problems of the consolidation of the Hungarian Greek Catholics after the Treaty of Trianon in his source publication. Ultimately, Lilla Fehér unfolds a chapter of the history of the emigration in Rome after 1945: the attempt to establish the Saint Stephen Academy.

The volume is supplemented by rich source material, charts and maps published at the singular studies, pictures, summaries in English and an index.

A kötet a Lendület-kutatócsoport szerves folytatásaként 2017-ben megalakult, a vatikáni magyar történeti kutatásokat működése középpontjába állító MTA-PPKE Fraknói Vilmos Római Történeti Kutatócsoport számára ad szakmai prognózist az elkövetkezendő öt évre. Alapjául a 2016. augusztus 23-án a pécsi VIII. Nemzetközi Hungarológiai Kongresszus Lendület-kutatócsoport által szervezett Vatikáni magyar történeti kutatások a 21. században szimpóziumán elhangzott előadások szolgálnak.

A tanulmányok kronológiai, tematikai rendje körvonalazza a kutatócsoport tervezett kutatásainak súlypontját, irányait. Az első öt tanulmány késő középkori témát vizsgál. Maléth Ágnes I. Károly és a pápai udvar közötti diplomáciai kapcsolatokat elemezi vatikáni levéltári források fényében. Fedeles Tamás a pápai tizedszedők munkájához szolgál adalékkal, a magyar és a lengyel kutatás számára egyaránt ismert pápai adószedő, István fia Péter kollektori működésének bemutatásával. Szovák Kornél azt vizsgálja, hogyan jelent meg a török kérdés a 15. században a pápához benyújtott folyamodványokban, az ún. szupplikációkban. Nemes Gábor a győri egyházmegyés hívek és papság késő középkori római jelenlétét dolgozza fel különféle kuriális forrástípusokra támaszkodva. Végül Lakatos Bálint tanulmánya a pápai udvar ceremoniális rangsorába enged betekintést, melyben Magyarország helyét vizsgálja.

A következő hat tanulmány súlypontját a kora újkor adja. Kanász Viktor Fráter György kuriális perére vonatkozó szentszéki források feltárásának tervét vázolja, mellyel a historiográfia régi adósságát igyekszik törleszteni. Hasonlóképpen Tusor Péter, aki a 17. századi kánoni kivizsgálási jegyzőkönyvek módszeres kiaknázásának tervét vázolja fel. Ehhez kapcsolódik Tóth Tamás írása, aki ugyanezt a témát a 18. század vonatkozásában körvonalazza. Kruppa Tamás Giovanni Argenti jezsuita művei és levelezése alapján vizsgálja politika és vallás kapcsolatát a 17. század elején Erdélyben. Szintén diplomáciai témát mutat be Mihalik Béla Vilmos: a Szentszék és a bécsi udvar kapcsolatát a 17. század végén, Georg Adam von Martinitz gróf római követsége idején. Kisvarga Gábor Galla Ferencnek a hódoltsági missziókról írt kéziratban maradt munkája kiadásának tervét vázolja.

Az utolsó négy tanulmány a kutatócsoport harmadik fő kutatási irányát a 20. századra vonatkozó szentszéki magyar kutatásokat körvonalazza. Tóth Krisztina a Szentszéknek az 1920-as évek fordulóján magyar királyi főkegyúri joggal kapcsolatban elfoglalt álláspontját ismerteti a Rendkívüli Egyházi Ügyek Kongregációja jegyzőkönyvein keresztül. Gárdonyi Máté a megújított, és már nem a Zsinati, hanem a Konzisztoriális Kongregációhoz benyújtott ad limina jelentések forrásértékét mutatja be. Véghseő Tamás forrásközlésében a görögkatolikusság Trianon utáni konszolidációjához ad érdekes adalékokat. Végül Fehér Lilla az 1945 utáni római emigráció történetének egy fejezetét, a Szent István Akadémia létrehozására tett kísérletet tárja fel.

A kötetet az egyes tanulmányoknál közölt gazdag forrásanyag, táblázatok, térképek, képanyag, illetve angol nyelvű összefoglalók és mutató egészíti ki.

The authors examine the tradition of appeals to foreign religious leaders, primarily to the Pope, by the believers, mostly Orthodox, from the Soviet Union. The practice of appealing to the Pope for help goes back to the time of the Civil War and went on through the entire Soviet period. In the late 1910s-1920s, the authors of such appeals were mainly Orthodox hierarchs. In the early 1930s, this practice became more widespread, and after World War II it was mostly continued by the activists and dissident groups. The reason for this tradition was the belief that pressure from Western religious and political leaders could force the Soviet authorities to change its policy of religious persecutions. In 1923, this belief took shape in a kind of "Curzon Ultimatum syndrome", since it was with the appearance of this memorandum of the British government that believers associated the release of Patriarch Tikhon from arrest. The effectiveness of such appeals for the pre-war period is highly questionable, while appeals by activists and dissident groups to the Vatican in the 1960-1980s proved to be quite efficient. A number of circumstances contributed to the fact that the Pope became, in fact, the main (although not the only) recipient of such letters:. the Pope was one of the main moral leaders of the Western religious world; the Soviet counter-propaganda campaign against Vatican made the Pope a recognizable image in Soviet mass consciousness. In the Cold War context, the appeal to such a significant figure as the Pope became one of the ways for religious dissidents to make themselves and their concepts visible and to join the international campaign for the protection of human rights, in which the Vatican was actively involved.
