ABSTRACT

A newly-found typescript of 47 pages of "The Mad Fiddler" belonging to Pessoa's niece, Manuela Nogueira, is described and compared to two other typescripts in the Pessoa Archive held at the National Library of Portugal. The place of the typescript in the history of the composition of the poems of "The Mad Fiddler" is relevant, since it contains a few variants and likely precedes the version considered to be definitive in the critical edition (Imprensa Nacional-Casa de Moeda, Lisbon, 1999)

RESUMO

Um dactiloscrito de "The Mad Fiddler" recém-encontrado, com 47 pp., pertencente a Manuela Nogueira, sobrinha de Pessoa, é descrito e comparado aos outros dois dactiloscritos existentes no espólio pessoano na Biblioteca Nacional de Portugal. Resgata-se a importância desse terceiro dactiloscrito na gênese de "The Mad Fiddler", pois ele contém variantes e provavelmente precede a versão considerada como definitiva na edição crítica (Imprensa Nacional-Casa da Moeda, Lisbon, 1999).

ABSTRACT

While a student in Durban High School, the young Fernando Pessoa / Charles Robert Anon (afterwards Alexander Search) will make of English and American poetry his first "adverse genre" by borrowing its emotions and simplicity, at the same time intellectualizing a dark questioning of existence. Pessoa's excursion through Shakespeare, Milton, and the romantics records the depth of his discontent through expressive dark themes. By 1909 these readings fade into the background of Pessoa's radical skepticism and the dramatization of his intellectual pursuit of the absolute.

RESUMO

Enquanto era estudante no liceu de Durban, o jovem Fernando Pessoa / Charles Robert Anon (posteriormente, Alexander Search) faz da poesia inglesa e norte-americana o seu primeiro "género adverso" por meio do empréstimo das suas emoções, ritmos e simplicidade, ao mesmo tempo que intelectualiza um questionamento tenebroso da existência. A viagem pessoana por Shakespeare, Milton e os românticos regista a profundidade do seu descontentamento, evidenciada nos temas críticos mais expressivos. Em 1909 estas leituras passam para um segundo plano, o do ceticismo radical de Pessoa e da dramatização da sua busca intelectual à procura do absoluto.

This study analyzes the oral traditions of Sri Lanka Creole Portuguese as a syncretism of European, African, and Asian sources, evidenced in literary themes, linguistic practice, and cultural traditions. Resulting musical, dramatic, and textual practices play a central role in defining tradition and maintaining group identity in the creole communities. Both the co-existence and the interrelationship of oral texts establish traditions which contribute to a system of creole culture that spread throughout Asia. References are primarily to Sri Lankan and Indian materials collected by scholars in the late nineteenth century and during my field work in the 1970s and 1980s. Sri Lankan verses refer to the east coast Burghers of Bat-ticaloa and Trincomalee and to the Kaffirs of Puttalam. This study also presents for the first time a unique source for data and comparative analysis from the H. Nevill collection at the British Library, which is an extensive manuscript of Sri Lankan Creole texts...
