Purpose– The purpose of this study is to establish both the validity of Western theories within the Middle East, namely, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and to further improve and extend our understanding of the effect of organisational coaching on counterproductive behaviours, such as bullying and alienation.Design/methodology/approach– A sample size of 656 participants from 29 organisations and 14 different industries was employed. A research model was proposed, refined and tested through a quantitative paradigm using one dimension nonlinear principal components analysis, linear structural equation modelling (SEM) and MANOVA.Findings– The correlation analysis results show non-significant negative correlations between coaching and all of the organisational counterproductive behaviour dimensions but not certainty. It was found that a significant weak relationship exists between most of the mediator dimensions, while a strong relationship exists between job alienation and workplace bullying. Results of the linear SEM provide support that coaching is related to certainty. Furthermore, the results reveal that certainty mediates a significant link between coaching and organisational counterproductive work behaviours (job alienation and bullying).Originality/value– The study is considered the first in the UAE to investigate organisational counterproductive work behaviours (bullying and job alienation). The main contribution of this study is to quantify the relationship between organisational coaching and bullying and job alienation mediated by organisational climate dimensions.

ABSTRACT In this study, we propose a new single acceptance sampling plan from truncated life test assuming that the quality characteristics follow the Tsallis q-exponential distribution. The proposed plan is given, and then we derived the operation characteristics function and calculate the optimal sample size and producer’'s risk for some given parameter values to measure the performance of this plan. Also, a comparative study with other sampling plan is discussed to show the benefit of the proposed plan, and real data analysis is given to illustrate the applicability of the proposed plan in the industry.

The activity of the methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) enzyme is regulated by the two polymorphisms C677T and A1298C, which reduce enzyme activity and result in hypomethylation of chromosomes that increase the risk of nondisjunction. These polymorphisms are suggested to be risk factors for Down syndrome (DS) in some populations. The aim of this study was to test if C677T and A1298C polymorphisms are correlated to maternal risk of DS in Jordan. The proportions of C677T and A1298C polymorphisms were examined in 53 case mothers who delivered DS children and 29 controls. The median age of case mothers was 35 years when delivering their affected children. Polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism was used for genotyping. The frequency of MTHFR C677T allele in all DS mothers was 3.2-fold higher than in the controls (odds ratio [OR] = 3.12, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.303-7.677). Also, the proportion of 677T in the older case mothers was different from the controls, but was significantly higher in younger case mothers than in the controls (OR = 4.2, 95% CI: 1.61-10.97, p = 0.003). The proportions of 677CT and 677TT genotypes in younger cases are, respectively, 10- and 9-fold higher than in the controls. The proportions of MTHFR A1298C are significantly different among all case groups and the controls (χ(2) = 4.27, p = 0.127), but there was a significant difference between young case mothers and both older case mothers group and the controls (OR = 1.25, 95% CI: 0.405-3.85, p = 0.698). There is strong association between MTHFRC677T and maternal risk of DS in Jordanian mothers younger than 35 years old and the MTHFR1298C allele has a lesser but additive risk effect in MTHFR677T/1298C compound heterozygotes.

In December 2019, a cluster of fatal pneumonia cases presented in Wuhan, China. They were caused by a previously unknown coronavirus. All patients had been associated with the Wuhan Wholefood market, where seafood and live animals are sold. The virus spread rapidly and public health authorities in China initiated a containment effort. However, by that time, travelers had carried the virus to many countries, sparking memories of the previous coronavirus epidemics, severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) and Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS), and causing widespread media attention and panic. Based on clinical criteria and available serological and molecular information, the new disease was called coronavirus disease of 2019 (COVID-19), and the novel coronavirus was called SARS Coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2), emphasizing its close relationship to the 2002 SARS virus (SARS-CoV). The scientific community raced to uncover the origin of the virus, understand the pathogenesis of the dise...

A double acceptance sampling plan (DASP) based on truncated life tests is suggested in this paper when the lifetime of a product follows the exponentiated generalized inverse Rayleigh distribution (EGIR). For a fixed value of the consumer’s confidence level, the minimum sample sizes of the first and second samples needed to ensure the specified mean life are obtained. The operating characteristic values according to the different quality levels are obtained and the minimum ratios of the mean life to the specified life are calculated. The important tables based on the suggested DASP are calculated and illustrated.

Abstract In this chapter, the design of the Shewhart control chart based on ranked repetitive sampling is presented. The structure of the proposed control chart is given for the quality characteristic and follows the normal distribution. The necessary measures of this chart are given to assess its performance. The performance of the chart is evaluated using the average run length over the existing control chart. The application of the chart is given through simulation and a real example.

Motivated mainly by lifetime issues, a new lifetime distribution coined ``Discrete Poisson-Gold distribution'' is introduced in this paper. Different structural properties of the new distribution are derived including moment generating function and the $r^{th}$ moment and others are presented. In addition, we discussed various important mathematical properties of the new distribution including estimation procedures for estimating the distribution parameters using the maximum likelihood and method of moments. The usefulness and credibility of the distribution are illustrated by means of two real-data applications to show its superior performance over some other well-known lifetime distributions and to prove its versatility in practical applications.

Building efficient sampling procedures to provide more accurate results with small sample sizes is one of the main goals in sampling surveys. The ranked set sampling (RSS) is a well‐known procedure for selecting representative samples and improving parametric estimation by employing ranking on observations. In order to have a more efficient sampling procedure, new sampling procedures are proposed and investigated in this article. The main focus of this article is to enhance the mean estimation of the study population using the proposed RSS procedures. The performance of the proposed sampling procedures is compared with their competitors in RSS, double RSS (DRSS), extreme RSS (ERSS), and double extreme RSS (DERSS) by conducting simulation studies for numerous (symmetric and asymmetric) distributions. An application to a real dataset is also considered to exemplify the achievement of the proposals. Numerical simulations show that the new modified estimators are unbiased for the popula...

In medical emergency situations, the triage process allows patients in potentially life-threatening condition to receive the fastest and most appropriate medical treatment. Triage consists in an evaluation of patients’ medical condition on a colour-based scale, reflecting from major to minor urgency. Shannon’s entropy measures are applied to such process in order to evaluate concordance, overestimation and underestimation of triage codes assigned to patients in two different moments and by different health-care professionals: during the acceptance phase, by nurses (variable X), and by physicians after deepened diagnostic evaluation (variable Y). Entropy indexes were also used to compare the years 2016 and 2015, showing a little increment of equivocal transmission with respect to year 2015.

In this article, a new sampling scheme based on ranked data is proposed. The main idea of the new sampling procedure is to produce a more flexible, reliable, cost - efficient design than the classical ranked set sampling and simple random sampling techniques . Accordingly, the new sampling scheme minimizes the number of wasted measurement units with high efficiency performances in estimating the population mean. Moreover, as different set sizes are used then the sample mean expected to be bias ed , to solve this problem an information theoretic weighted mean estimator is proposed. It is found that the weighted mean is more accurate and more efficient than the standard one. and the sample mean based a simple random sampling technique. Both estimators, weighted and un - weighted outperform the simple random sampling scheme in estimating the population mean. A real data set for estimating the average cohort percentage for survivals to age 65 in Jordan from 1960 to 2015 is used to illus...

Acceptance sampling plans are statistical procedures that are used for quality control and improvement in cases where it is not possible to test every item in a lot of materials. The outcome of this test determines whether the entire lot is accepted or rejected based on a random sample. In this procedure, an important characteristic of the materials is their lifetime sampling distribution, and this can vary from sample to sample. In this article, a new lifetime distribution, known as an Ishita distribution, is considered for developing a new single-acceptance sampling plan. The new acceptance sampling plan is developed under a condition wherein the mean lifetime test is truncated within a pre-specified time period. Based on this condition, the parameters of the acceptance sampling plan including the operating characteristics function and the minimum sample size are obtained. The producer’s risk in relation to the entire lot of materials is derived and illustrated by numerical examples.

This article aims to estimate the population ratio using a multistage median ranked set sampling method. The mean squared errors and bias equations of the suggested estimators are obtained. The new estimators are compared with their counterparts using simple random sampling, ranked set sampling, and median ranked set sampling methods. A real data set is used for illustration. The results revealed that the multistage median ranked set sampling estimators are approximately unbiased in terms of the population ratio and their efficiencies increase in the number of stages for specific value of the sample size. Also, it is found that the multistage median ranked set sampling estimators are more efficient than their counterparts based on simple random sampling, ranked set sampling, and median ranked set sampling.

Background: Viral cause of sporadic breast cancer (SBC) has been suggested based on the experimental murine model of mammary tumor caused by mouse mammary tumor virus (MMTV), Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), and human papillomavirus (HPV). While some studies have demonstrated the presence of viral sequences of MMTV, HPV, and EBV in breast cancer cells, others failed. These contradictions may be attributed to the geographical distribution of breast cancer incidence and/or technical variations. In the current study, we aimed to investigate the correlation of MMTV, HPV, and EBV infections with the development of breast cancer in Jordanian patients. Methods: One hundred SBC tissue samples were subjected to laser capture microdissection for the selection of tumor cells populations. Fluorescence polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was used to detect the presence of the MMTV env-like sequences. Real-time PCR was used for HPV and EBV detection, and EBV was further confirmed by chromogen in situ hybrid...

This article proposed a modified AM estimation procedure. The procedure uses the grouping estimators iteratively after dividing the sample into clus- ters. Then, the grouping AM procedure used to fit the structural relationship with measurement error considering there is no equation error model. The performance of the iterative grouping estimator is compared with the tra- ditional two group estimators. Simulation study showed that in terms of mean square error the proposed estimator is robustify the traditional two group estimator. A real data analysis for studying the relationships between happiness rate and the corruption perceptions index in the Arabs states is discussed.
