During the 17th to 19th centuries, five different translations of the complete New Testament (NT) and few notable translations of extensive NT readings for liturgical use by the Greek Orthodox and the Anglican Churches were produced and published from the Hellenistic Koiné into vernacular Greek. Similarly, since the beginning of the 20th century, 19 complete NT translations have circulated, while numerous translations of separate NT books have appeared as well. All these translations present a variety of quality characteristics regarding the original Greek base text, the translation methods, the target audience, the type of language used, and the religious affiliations of the translators, etc. Such characteristics of the complete NT editions in their historical background will be concisely discussed below.

The biblical name of God was used widely among the Israelites since the days of Moses. The Bible record extends this practice back to the days of the patriarchs, even to the early days of humanity. It is a historical fact that the divine name was also known by peoples at lands outside Israel—like in Egypt probably since the late 15th century B.C.E. and the land of Moab since the 9th century B.C.E. It became more widely known among the nations around the Mediterranean Sea during the Hellenistic and Roman periods. During the Second Temple period Greek philosophical trends influenced decisively the Jewish theology. The name of God was gradually attempted to be silenced inside the Judaism and eventually became a verbal taboo.
The teachings of Jesus from Nazareth and their diffusion by his followers presupposed a re-interpretation of the OT theology. This effort to describe anew the notion of God was written down in the canonical Christian scriptures. In this article it is attempted to explore the understanding of the notion of God among the Hellenistic Jews and early Christians as shown in the use of the divine names and especially the sacred Tetragrammaton.
Five essential questions will be examined in brief: (a) Who is actually the God of the Bible, (b) which is the name of the God of the Bible, (c) when did the name of God cease to be pronounced publicly, (d) whether Jesus and early Christians pronounce the name of God, and (e) where may be found the name of God inside the NT texts. A thrilling story of the use and the pronunciation of the Biblical name of the Supreme Being came to be interwoven with a long series of historical twists and turns.

As early as Philo, it was accepted by Hellenistic Jews that the Platonic understanding of the deity was fully compatible with the Jewish scriptures. The choices made by the Alexandrian translators allowed and even promoted a Platonic reading of the sacred text in Greek, especially of Exodus 3:14, 15 and the Tetragrammaton. Subsequent Jewish and Christian Bible translators reacted to this philosophical deviation. This article attempts to trace such translation traditions and investigate alternative Greek renderings of the original Hebrew terms that would not undermine core biblical ideas about God. Towards this end, the tension between “being” and “becoming” within theological and philosophical frameworks is also sketched.

The personality of the Biblical God spans through all over the writings that comprise the Jewish Hebrew Scriptures and respectively the core of the Christian Old Testament. Despite the absence of an explicit theological exposition, the qualities of the supreme deity sketch a quite distinct profile for Him. On the other side, the god named Iao is found in Greek and Latin sources of the Hellenistic period already since the 1st century BCE. It mainly appears in writings displaying marks of religious syncretism, used as one of the names designating either the highest God or one of his emanations. In the following is examined the possibility that the use of the name Iao, instead of another form of the Tetragrammaton, in the manuscript 4QpapLXXLev b (4Q120; Rahlfs 802) may be the result of a Hellenizing rather than a re-Hebraizing tendency, a view that tends to prevail in the Septuagint studies. Evidence coming from Christian writers shows that for few centuries CE Bible manuscripts that contained the theonym Iao were circulating among them and even possibly produced by them.

It became more widely known among the nations during the Hellenistic and Roman periods. During the Second Temple period (200 B.C.E.–70 C.E.) Greek philosophical trends influenced decisively the Jewish theology. The name of God was gradually attempted to be silenced inside the Judaism. What was Jesus stance on this matter? Did he utter the divine name par excellence? It is suggested that Jesus Christ would have no valid reason to abide by such a “man-made” rule and thus to restrict his mission “to bear witness about the light” (Joh. 1:7). What about his followers? Did they feel bound to conform to this rabbinical tradition? At the same time, the records of early Christianity were written down and soon they became—along with the Hebrew Scriptures—the sacred writings of the Christian communities. Can it be deduced what was the case with the divine name in the autographs? Church fathers and Christian writers give us some valuable hints on the subject. Few centuries later, Renaissance humanism and the development of Hebrew linguistics contributed to the advancement of the Hebrew studies. Along with the increasing Bible manuscripts findings, this had as a consequence the improvement of the Bible text that is available to us today. A thrilling story of the use and the pronunciation of the Biblical name of the Supreme Being is interwovened with all these historical twists and turns.

This article recounts the persistent use of the sacred Tetragrammaton through the centuries as an “effable,“ utterable name at least in some circles, despite the religious inhibitions against its pronunciation. A more systematic investigation of the various Greek renderings of the biblical name of God is provided. These renderings are found in amulets, inscriptions, literary works, etc., dating from the last few centuries B.C.E. until today. It will be illustrated that some forms of the Tetragrammaton were actually accepted and used more widely within the Greek religious and secular literature since the Renaissance and especially since the Modern Greek Enlightenment. Furthermore, it is asserted that for various reasons there is no unique or universally “correct” rendering of the Hebrew term in Greek. Of special note are two Greek transcriptions of the Tetragrammaton, one as it was audible and written down by a Greek-speaking author of a contra Judaeos work in the early 13th century in South Italy and another one written down at Constantinople in the early 17th century—both of them presented for the first time in the pertinent bibliography.

The biblical name of God has a long history of use by the Israelites since the days of Moses that extends even back to the days of patriarchs and, according to the Bible record, even more to the early days of humanity. Although it was also known by peoples outside Israel, it seems that it became known wider outside the land of Israel during the Hellenistic and Roman periods. Greek philosophical trends influenced decisively the Jewish theology. The name of God was gradually silenced inside the Judaism. On the same time, this proper name was translated and diffused to new directions across Europe and America. Renaissance humanism and the development of Hebrew linguistics contributed to the use of the sacred name to an unprecented degree. Starting from the Second Temple period (200 B.C.E.–70 C.E.) up to today, there is attempted an overview of the thrilling story of the pronunciation of the “Scripture name of the Supreme Being”.

AUTHOR'S NOTES:
1. Correct title: “The pronunciation of the sacred Tetragrammaton: An overview of a nomen revelatum that became a nomen absconditum” (instead of the misprinted “The pronunciation of the sacred Tetragrammaton: An overview of a nomen revelatus that became a nomen absconditus”).
2. In the article (pp. 10, 11) was used an English back translation of a sentence taken from Howard's article from the Italian book of Matteo Pierro, Geova e il Nuovo Testamento (Rescaldina, MI: Sacchi Editore 2000, p. 60) resulting in a slightly different wording of the quotation.
The sentence in the Judaica Ukrainica article:
"When the Septuagint Version that the New Testamental Church used and quoted contained the Divine Name in Hebrew characters, the writers of the New Testament included without doubt the Tetragrammaton in their quotations."
The sentence in the original English article (Biblical Archaeology Review, Vol. 4, No. 1 (March) 1978, p. 14):
"When the Septuagint which the New Testament church used and quoted contained the Hebrew form of the divine name, the New Testament writers no doubt included the Tetragrammaton in their quotations."
There is no actual difference of the meaning of the original sentence compared to the back-translated one, and there was no intention at all to provide a different wording in my article.

The God of the Bible is described as the One who wants to come into communicational relation with his most prominent creature, the man. In ancient times he makes the first step by revealing himself, even acquainting with his name: "I am יְהֹוָה, that is my name." While Abraham and his descendant people of Israel played a main role in the divine economy, Yahweh is not a God only of one people but of all the humanity. His identity has received numerous and diverse interpretive approaches within Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. In this article it is attempted an approach to the name par excellence of the Biblical God concerning its use in the history of both Christianity and Judaism, as well as literary aspects of its etymology and meaning.

The teaching of Informatics in the 5th and 6th grades, in the section "Controlling and Programming" of the curriculum, usually includes the student's understanding "that the computer executes instructions received from man in a coded form" and the use of simple commands "to create shapes or the solution of simple problems." Scratch's easy-to-use and playful programming environment allows students to move from the world of educational games to Scratch programming through a fairly smooth process. Fundamental concepts such as variables and basic programming structures appear in the students' cognitive horizon and are acquired to a satisfactory degree in terms of their age and existing experiences, mainly through the desire for exploration. Thus, the Informatics course attracts students' interest in discovery and participation and makes the teaching of basic programming concepts easier and more friendly to them. The implementation of the game by 6th grade students had very satisfactory results.

➽ [p. 215] Multiple divergent sociohistorical trajectories met in the face of Simon Atumano (the "Ottoman/Osman," 1348-1387), a man of considerable linguistic skills, who held high religious ranks and was active in diplomatic endeavors at the highest levels between East and West. He was born in Constantinople to an Orthodox mother and a Turk father of Anatolian Turkish descendance and, therefore, was a second-generation Turk. Simon became at first an Orthodox monk at the Stoudios monastery and held an anti-Palamite viewpoint. He had excellent command of Greek, Latin, and Hebrew. After 1348 he converted and became an influential Catholic cleric and author. He was a humanist intellectual and an influential Greek scholar during the Italian Renaissance. He served as the Bishop of Gerace in Calabria from 1348 until 1366 and the Latin Archbishop of Thebes in Boeotia thereafter until 1380.
At this latter period was that Simon took on an exceptional task for his time-he translated the Greek New Testament in Hebrew. Unfortunately, the manuscript with the invaluable translation of the New Testament was never published and is considered lost. (Carmignac (1978) 19, 75 n. 76) Fortunately, his translation of the Old Testament from Hebrew to Greek has survived to the present. An outstanding peculiarity of this translation is the rendering of the Hebrew Tetragrammaton yhwh as Ὀντωτής, Ὀντουργός and Οὐσιωτής-all of them transferring the idea of the One who creates [p. 215] living beings, who brings creatures into existence. This is a rare case of such a practice in the history of the Bible translational activity, especially in Greek.
Simon is an iconic representative of the humanist scholarship of the Greek-speaking East. Simon's figure combined East and West, Greek Orthodox and Roman Catholic Churches, Greek and Turkish identities, monasticism and cosmopolitanism. His actions and his translations exhibit the quality of a morally brave man, guided by his Christian ideals. During the centuries that followed Simon's activities, there were numerous private initiatives to translate parts of the Bible. However, these efforts didn't reach large parts of the population. It was only by the 20th century that several New and Old Testament translations in vernacular Greek circulated more widely. Some of them-like Vamvas's and the ones prepared by the Hellenic Bible Society-have succeeded to be read across various Christian denominations. Despite fierce opposition and various impediments, Simon's legacy is a valuable and inspiring reminder for the persisting need of preparing and revising Bible translations with high scholarly standards for the benefit of the Greek readers both for private and liturgical use.

In this work, Andrei A. Orlov examines Jewish apocalyptic traditions about the angel Yahoel, tracing their conceptual impact on the development of later rabbinic and Hekhalot beliefs concerning the supreme angel Metatron. The author argues that the figure Yahoel, who became associated in Jewish apocalypticism with the distinctive aural ideology of the divine Name, provides an important conceptual key not only for elucidating the evolution of the Metatron tradition, but also for understanding the origins of the distinctive aural ideology prominent in early Jewish mystical accounts. Andrei A. Orlov suggests that the aural mould of Jewish apocalypticism exercised a decisive and formative influence on the development of early Jewish mysticism.

✅ Jesus’s Manifesto: The Sermon on the Plain is a historical analysis and exegesis of the Sermon on the Plain found in Luke 6:20–49. Going into the historical and literary context of the Sermon on the Plain, it examines how the message fits into the world of Jesus and his audience. Jesus’s Manifesto demonstrates how the Sermon’s ethical injunctions and eschatological message interacted with contemporary ideologies, and how these injunctions were meant to be taken as normative commandments by Jesus in light of his eschatological message. Many have attempted to dampen the ethical teachings of Jesus by trying to relativize them, or by trying to make them compatible with the wider culture and the dominant ideologies; however, when understood in its historical context, the Sermon’s message was not only incompatible with the wider culture and the dominant ideologies, but it stood in opposition to them. Jesus’s Manifesto provides the necessary historical and anthropological tools to fully appreciate the profound and seemingly radical message of the Sermon of the Plain.

As is well known, Greek translations of the Hebrew Scriptures-the so-called Old Greek and its recensions-appeared during the 3rd Century BCE in the dominant language of the then-known world. Translational and theological issues led to the production of additional translations other than the Septuagint, such as those of Aquila, Symmachus and Theodotion. The development of the Greek language and the pressing desire to read the sacred texts in the contemporary, common language were constant factors that demanded new or revised translations, a common demand that the liturgical reading in the older Greek language in the churches was incapable of satisfying. The humanistic birth pangs in Europe which produced Bible translations in vernacular languages for wider circulation reached the Greek speaking world during the early 16th century. The translational choices regarding the Tetragrammaton reflect theological interpretations and this paper aims to discuss the implications of this. For the majority of the post-Nicaean Church interpreters, the Septuagint rendering ho on (ὁ ὤν) was the perfect translation equivalent of the Tetragrammaton, but for the majority of the Jewish and a few of the Christian translators from Late Antiquity until today this practice was not satisfactory and various other renderings were adopted.

It is commonly maintained that the LXX rendering of the phrasal theonym´e| hyè´ášer´e| hyè (if considered as such) found in Exodus 3:14 comprised a theological shift in the biblical understanding of God. This divine declaration (only once addressed to Moses) was taken by some exegetes as an explanation of the sacred Tetragrammaton yhwh (found more than six thousand times in the Hebrew text) and even as the real, one and only divine name—especially when the Greek rendering of the Tetragrammaton started conveying the notions of lordship and supremacy. As early as Philo, it was accepted by Hellenistic Jews that the Platonic understanding of the Deity was fully compatible with the Jewish scriptures. In fact, the choices made by the Alexandrian translators allowed and even promoted a Platonic reading of the sacred text in Greek. A reaction to this development had been the renderings in Bible versions made by Jewish and Jewish Christian translators during the early centuries CE that Origen opted to include in his Hexapla. Despite the total dominance of the LXX in the Christian world, this reverse theological tendency—aiming to attain a more faithful adherence to the Hebrew text—has been present in a number of Greek Bible translations until today. Such noteworthy cases include the late medieval translations of Graecus Venetus (late 14th/early 15th cent.) and the Constantinople Pentateuch (1547). This paper will attempt to trace such translation traditions and investigate alternative Greek renderings of the original Hebrew terms (both the Tetragrammaton and the phrasal theonym) that might not pose a direct threat to core biblical ideas about God. Towards this end, the tension between " being " and " becoming " within theological and philosophical frameworks will also be sketched.

During the 16th to 19th centuries almost six complete New Testament (NT) editions and one edition of NT readings for liturgical use by the Greek Orthodox Church were translated (also paraphrased or rendered hermeneutically) and published from the Hellenistic Koine into vernacular Greek. Similarly, since the beginning of the 20th century 18 complete NT editions have circulated, while a number of NT parts or separate NT books appeared as well. All these translations present a variety of quality characteristics (regarding the original Greek base text, the translation methods, the target audience, and the religious affiliations of the translators) and they will be discussed in this presentation.
Neither the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople nor the Greek Orthodox Church ever took the initiative to officially translate under their auspices the sacred Scriptures for public or private reading. Every translational attempt made mainly by courageous Orthodox clericals and also by theologians and laymen (either Orthodox or not) was deemed condemnable for a number of reasons. The suspicion of heresy hidden between the lines and inter-confessional proselytism were always in the foreground of the rejective argumentation. Such fears combined with national and political reasons deprived for a very long time the Greek audience of the privilege to obtain the sacred Scriptures translated into their every-day language. The notions that “for the Orthodox tradition the Bible does not stand on its own authority, but it is only one among many expressions of the experience of the church” and that, consequently, should only be read exclusively through the prism of patristic exegesis provided the required reinforcement for this practice.

The earliest Septuagint (LXX) copies—either closer to the "original " Greek translation (OG, " Old Greek ") or part of its subsequent revisions and recensions, dated from the pre-Christian to the Christian era and discovered in Palestine and Egypt—provide clear evidence for the continuous use of manuscripts that included Hebrew forms of the Tetragrammaton within the Greek sacred text. Astonishingly, 4QpapLXXLevb , known also as 4Q120, is the only surviving LXX manuscript that uses a Greek form of the Biblical name of God.
The object of this presentation concerns the question whether the use of Iao (Gr. Ιαω/Ἰαώ) in place of the sacred Tetragrammaton within this manuscript is part of the primary, original translational activity (part of a more general Hellenizing process) or rather part of a secondary, correctional Hebraizing tendency.
Our working hypothesis is that the utilization of the Ιαω theonym within the sacred text of the Greek Torah may have primarily urged from Hellenistic theological conceptions adopted by certain Jewish circles, especially at Egypt. The Maccabean revolt was an uprising against foreign oppression but also a civil conflict between (a) the orthodox and (b) the reformist parties within the Jewish people. These two trends were mutually fighting each other, struggling to keep the Hebrew self-identification from one side against the Hellenistic mental and cultural flood on the other side. In this presentation some of the resulting implications will be investigated.

The proper name of God יהוה (YHWH) is given particular distinction throughout the Hebrew Scriptures in comparison to appellations or titles attributed to him. Nevertheless, the pronunciation of the biblical name of God became a persisting taboo. Biblical interpretations, philosophical influences, and religious ordinances within Judaism and subsequently Christianity silenced the utterance of the name. The earliest indications of non-pronouncement of the divine name par excellence among Jews appeared in the 3rd–to–2nd century B.C.E. By the 3rd century C.E. the utterance of the sacred Tetragrammaton had become a capital offence. It is generally held that the name “disappeared” for some centuries before its being rediscovered by Renaissance humanists.
In this article it is attempted to demonstrate that, despite the religious inhibitions, the Tetragrammaton remained as a matter of fact an “effable name,” namely, utterable, at least in some circles. A more systematic investigation of the various Greek renderings of the Tetragrammaton is attempted. These renderings are found in amulets, inscriptions, literary works, etc., dating from as early as the first Christian centuries until today. It will be shown that some forms of the Tetragrammaton were actually accepted and used more widely in the Greek religious and secular literature since the Renaissance and especially during the Modern Greek Enlightenment. Also, it will become sufficiently clear that there is no unique or universally “correct” rendering of the Hebrew term in Greek. Of special note are two Greek reconstructions of the Tetragrammaton, one as was heard and written down by a Greek-speaking author of an “adversus Judaeos” work in the early 13th century in South Italy and another one written down at Constantinople in the early 17th century—both of them presented for the first time in the pertinent bibliography.

Based on the surviving copies of the Greek version of Symmachus (P.Sym.P.Vindob. G.397 77 and Ambrosian Library O 39 sup.), combined with Eusebius comment about the use of despotes (PG 23:708A), the reconstructions < ΕΙΠΕΝ yhwh / ΠΙΠΙ ΤΩ ΔΕΣΠΟΤΗ ΜΟΥ > are most probably the rendering by Symmachus of the phrase in Psalm 110|109:1. Thus, Isho'dad’s comment is further confirming the conclusion that “Symmachus continued the Jewish practice of writing the Hebrew Tetragrammaton within the Greek text.”
