Laying the foundations of music of Uzbek Turkic’s in by many musicologists as Al-Farabi, Avicenna, Safiyuddin Urmevi, Abd al-Qadir Maraghi from 8th century to the present day has become a system through various stages. Today, it is possible to study Uzbek Turkic’s’ maqam music divided in three different groups. They are: Fergana-Tashkent, Bukhara-Samarkand and Khwarezm maqams. Eastern peoples who make up the traditional shashmaqam and twelve maqam music systems lay the basis of the maqams aforementioned. The period of Khiva khanate in the 19th century has seen increased studies about the scientific aspects of music by Khwarezmian scientists. Admittedly, the most beautiful result of these works is musical notation called "tanbur chizighi" found by Al-Khwarezmi. After the discovery of this notation system, all the shashmaqam songs had been written with this musical notation system and they have survived to the present day. These discoveries continue to increase interest in the science of music; new books and opinions have emerged as a result. Thus, thereafter, began an epoch of development of maqam music in Khwarezm and subsequently, the terminological studies gained momentum. Many terms as semi-maqam, whole-maqam and sesqui-maqam that describe characteristics of the maqam music and performances of aforementioned period is envisaged, but this situation has given rise to terminological controversy. A comparative analysis of the structural aspects of these types of maqams has shown that these terms used are inappropriate. Insomuch that these terminological problems have attracted the attention of a famous scientist Prof. Abdurauf Fitrat and led him to writing a book on this subject in the aforementioned period. As a result, we will examine problems of terminology emerged in the 20th century with development of Khwarezm maqam music in axis of the studies of Turk and Uzbek maqam music in this paper.

Khalfachilik, which forms an important place in Uzbek music tradition, is continuing only among women and a tradition from the past to the present day in accordance with the master-apprentice relationship. It contains important product in terms of content. The word ‘khalfa’, which is pronounced as ‘helfe’ in Uzbek language, is of Arabic origin and means ‘foreman’, ‘headworker’ and ‘apprentice’, in nowadays it is used to women who perform products of oral tradition in Khwarazm region. The performers who called ‘shoira khalfa’ ‘sozi khalfa’ and ‘kitobiy khalfa’ are chose their repertoires from parts of legend named Ashiq Qarib and Shasenem, Asli and Kerem, Ashiq Mahmut, Tahir and Zuhre, Ashiq Alband and Koroghlu. In addition, is located poetry about advice and ballad that formed based on poets, such as Magtymguly Pyragy and Mukhammad Riza Agakhi. Our music contains almost all the aspects of our national culture. The need for the studies of common terminology in order to interpret our music through more extensive and meaningful expressions is recognized through the problems. If common musical terminology is designated, the musical misconception between Anatolian Turkish music and other Turkic music might be partially resolved in order to settle these problems. We assume that like in other fields, introducing words supporting common musical terminology among Turkic people will not only solve the problems but also constitute a useful source for learning regional differences in music.
This article discusses common musicological problems between the term “ashula” and “mani” basing on the relationship, similarity and current functioning of the two terms. These two genres, based on the verse types “aruz” and “parmak” and sung with particular melody types (makam), have enriched their sources while completing their development with the time. These developments led to association of these genres with similar kinds or their differentiation. Whereas had the commonality of expressions been maintained since past, the time would not have been lost for these disputes and more novelties would have been observed instead. These problems are observed not only between the terms “ashule” and “mani”. The same is true for many terms used today. In conclusion, we will examine the term “ashula” equivalent of the Anatolian term “mani”, in terms of its prevalence within the territory of Uzbekistan and its terminological problems in comparison with the term “mani” while seeking new ways to solve this common problem.
