The collegia centonariorum have often been seen as the municipal fire-brigades or status groups of sorts in the Roman cities. Through a close investigation of the chronological development and geographical distribution of the collegia centonariorum, their legal privileges, and the prosopographical data of members and patrons, this volume reveals a much more complex picture of their origins, characters and compositions in various regions from the first century BC to the fourth century AD. Intricately connected with the textile economy, the collegia centonariorum illustrate how elements as diverse as material demand from the military and the city of Rome, legal infrastructure, urban development, and organizations of urban-based craftsmen and tradesmen may have interfaced with each other in the Roman world. For reviews, see, e.g., Classical Review 62.2 (2012): 602-604, http://dx.doi.org/10.1017/S0009840X12001242.

" Liu (classical studies, DePauw University) takes a new look at the collegia centonariorum of the Roman Empire in the west. Long assumed to be some sort of fire-fighting organizations, she argues that they were instead trade guilds made up predominantly of textile workers. Using epigraphic and literary sources, Liu uncovers a great deal of prosopographical information on specific guilds and their members. Noting the variations among the groups, she also puts together a solid base of commonalities to suggest that the guilds were for business, social and religious activities and that they were regulated by the state. Oddly, she found no direct evidence that they had a role in fighting fires. Her work is an important addition to the study of working men's associations and the nature of the guild in both Roman and later medieval urban society.

This volume introduces new perspectives on taxation policies in the Roman Empire, the Galilee, and Egypt, with unique insights into the economic effects of imperial pacification on local and regional microlevel economies in the Galilee both before and after the First Jewish Revolt against Rome. Through examining tax documents and other ancient texts in detail, this book offers innovative perspectives on the mechanisms, ideological justifications, and politically hierarchizing functions of taxation and tribute, particularly in the Roman Empire. Moreover, leading archaeologists present important information about the economic effects of the First Jewish Revolt on local economies in the Galilee, based on findings from recent archaeological excavations. Taxation, Economy, and Revolt in Ancient Rome, Galilee, and Egypt is of interest to students and scholars in Classical, Biblical, and Jewish Studies, as well as economic history and Mediterranean archaeology.

"Quite possibly, it was under the early Julio-Claudian dynasty that Patavium adopted a local era; it perhaps attributed its long history of stability and prosperity to the effective Roman intervention at the request of the Patavians in 174 BCE, which restored order in the city. Several scholars have argued that local eras were not imposed by the Roman authorities. The Era of Patavium does not contradict this observation. On one hand, the era does not emphasize the fact that city was reduced to a municipal status in the Empire. On the other hand, it does not showcase its alleged antiquity, either. Although all the debates and discussions among the local decurions can only be imagined, it is reasonable to suggest that the choice of the beginning date of the era implies a process of eliminating other dates. As such, the era may have constituted a carefully constructed self-representation, and bore the mark of a negotiated local identity."

Inscribed on three sides of a statue base, AE 1998, 282 preserves a series of correspondence in 227–228 CE pertaining to the establishment of a perpetual endowment of HS 20,000, of which the primary beneficiary would be the collegium dendrophorum of Lavinium. The donor was a Gaius Servilius Diodorus, an otherwise unknown eques of African origin (I.9: domo Girba ex Africa and a member of the priestly college of the Laurentes. What is remarkable about this dossier is that it provides a rare glimpse into the (re)actions of the various interested parties (the donor, the city, a senator, the designated recipients, and the donor’s peers) in the establishment of the gift, which makes it particularly valuable for a better understanding of the politics of munificence in the Roman cities. This paper attempts to suggest some ways of interpreting this dossier, based on a close examination of the language of the correspondence - translation of the entire dossier is provided - and the chronological sequence of events. Diodorus’ dossier seems to betray an outsider trying, with some frustrations, to enter the local network. It provides further testimony to euergetism as a site that showcased tensions, negotiations, compromises, and surprising twists and turns of events. This dossier, then, brings to light the many shades of public benefaction in the Roman cities. It serves as a reminder that most of the honorific inscriptions only recorded the end results of what may have been long processes, and tended to give a misleadingly rosy picture of private and public munificence. The main goal of this paper is to investigate how Chinese intellectuals received, translated, appropriated, and reoriented Greek tragedies in a period when China was caught in intense debates about modernization and national rejuvenation and suffered one national crisis after another. The paper argues that the selection of specific Greek plays for translation and the production of their Chinese versions in the first half of the twentieth century were hardly purely literary exercises but closely related to the larger projects of national salvation and reforming "national character". The exploration of the historically specific encounter between China and Greek tragedies is substantiated by critical examinations of the cases of Prometheus Bound, Medea, and Trojan Women at the linguistic, textual, (cross-)cultural, and historical levels.

【Abstract】Apart from a fleeting show of interest in Virgil in 1930 in connection with the bimillennial anniversary of his birth, Virgil has never incurred any serious scholarly or popular attention in China until the end of the twentieth century. The sporadic and limited introduction and translations of Virgil’s works in China are in sharp contrast not only to his literary fame and enduring influence in the West throughout the centuries but also to the general popularity of the Homeric epics in China, which have been translated into Chinese numerous times since early twentieth century to this day. Based on a diachronic investigation into the experience of the Virgilian texts in China, this paper explores the factors that might have hindered Virgil, who was hailed as the “Father of the West” (Theodor Haecker) and “classic of all Europe” (T. S. Eliot), to gain some influence in China in the periods of intense Westernization. Stepping out of the Euro-centric approaches to Virgil, this paper uses Virgil in China as a case study to tap into the broader issues of the Chinese selection of Western classics and the viability of Western classics in a non-Western context.

In this talk, Professor Liu will provide a study of imperial power within contemporary Roman society, stepping away from the grand narratives of political history, and instead looking at the realities of Roman rule as it was experienced by local communities. The link can be found here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MztPWp4sg0c. Prof. Steven Green will be running a two-day workshop (25-26 February, 2019) on Ovid’s exile poetry, which is designed to support an existing international project charged with translating into Mandarin, and providing commentaries for, the entire corpus of Ovid. Three international Chinese scholars working on the translation project will be attending the workshop, as well as one of our own Yale-NUS alumni who is attached to the project, and the aim is to explore different aspects of Ovid’s exile poetry, discover synergies with Chinese (exile) poetry, and discuss challenges in translating a mercurial author like Ovid into Mandarin for a contemporary non-specialist Chinese audience.
Four sessions will focus on: Ovid’s poetic book of exile; Tomis as constructed land of exile; Ovid as Virgil’s hero; Ovid as the sum of all sufferers (which will involve discussion of Heroides and Metamorphoses).
