This article presents an analysis of the event structure of the nominal complement of prepositional phrases (PPs) headed by de and en that alternate with the gerund as complements of estar. It is assumed as a fundamental fact that these prepositions contrast in the possibility of determining the nominal that complements them (a possible determination in the case of en and an impossible one in the case of de). The analysis shows that the alternation with the gerund is based in the event structure lexically codified and shared by the base of the gerund and the nominals of the PPs. The possibility of internal determination of the nominal complement of en is semantically irrelevant for the alternation, which emphasizes the nonspecific * Para correspondencia, dirigirse a Nicolás Saavedra (lsaavedrag@uc.cl). 234 LENGUAS MODERNAS 52, SEGUNDO SEMESTRE 2018 character of the lexical-aspectual meaning present in the nominal and the base of the gerund.

This article presents an application of the analysis of the functional
projections of the Determiner Phrase (DetP) developed by Borer (2005) to two
related phenomena that involve structures in complement position of estar: on
the one hand, we find the non-locative reading of prepositional phrases headed by
en and complemented by a bare noun (e.g. estar en entrenamiento), and the locative
reading of phrases headed by the same preposition and complemented by a DetP
with the same nominal lexical head (e.g. estar en el entrenamiento). On the other
hand, we find the alternation of a gerund in estar entrenando with the prepositional
structure present in estar en entrenamiento. Considering, moreover, that only
in the non-locative reading the subject of the clause corresponds to a semantic
participant of the event, it is proposed that the presence of a determinant blocks
the possibility of establishing a relation of referential identity between the subject
of v and the subject of P, thus contributing to the production of a locative reading.
The absence of blocking to the aforementioned referential identity relation allows
to produce a non-locative reading that permits, at least partially, the alternation
between the structures with gerund and those with a bare noun.

We present the basic aspects of Dynamic Syntax, a model of syntactic and semantic processing. For the achievement of this goal, we develop several definitions and illustrations of the essential components of the metalanguage, and we exemplify this dynamic modeling through the presentation of the complete syntactic process that produces the meaning composition of a simple sentence. Finally, we signal succinctly some prominent characteristics of the model.

In this article we present, in very general terms, the basic assumptions of the theoretical approach known as Construction Grammar (CG), and then we develop a detailed account of the analysis of the semantic and grammatical phenomenon known as aspectual coercion, from the standpoint of CG, and with reference to Spanish examples. We base this exposition in the proposal made in Michaelis (2004), because it stands out in terms of its thorough development and formal rigour.

This paper tackles the plurality of scientific models in constructing scientific theories, assuming this plurality as a condition for fruitful theorizing. The treatment
of this topic is carried out taking as a base Max Black’s proposals on scientific models, as presented in his article Models and Archetypes. In this reference, Black characterizes
three classes of models: analogical ones, mathematical ones and theoretical ones. Some distinctions introduced by Black are applied to the contrast between notions pertaining
to two mainstream theories in contemporary linguistics: generative linguistics and cognitive linguistics. From this contrast, the aim is to relativize both the – apparently
constitutive – commitment of these theories with the use of certain kinds of models, and the rejection of models of a different kind. This relativization is introduced according to the descriptive and explicative advantages that a plural use of models may
entail for the contrasting theories.
