The book explores the phenomenon of political cartoons and their relationship to the political dynamics of a society. It is based on the assumption that political cartoons are a special type of source that represents a particular political moment , but at the same time reveals the social and political structures of a society or social group. Based on this, it is developed the argument that two constitutive elements of the political cartoons are responsible for characterizing time and guaranteing their political role : The humor and the violence . These characteristics of the political cartoon form the basis for the analysis of the strategy, under which the cartoon operates in public arena.
As case study, the cartoons of the Nazi newspaper "Der Stürmer" ( 1923-45 ) are analysed. By analyzing this source, the role of political cartoons in the public arena and their main characteristics are evidenced. The production of cartoons and their core elements are part of the political dynamics , reflecting structural elements of the image producers or their social groups. Social and political structures and current events converge on a media phenomenon, whose interpretation brings new political and historical perspectives to light.

This paper aims at pointing out relevant questions on the analysis of the work of nineteenth-century cartoonist Ângelo Agostini, as well as to present pertinent arguments on the analysis of images in the historiographical field. To this end, the text locates the artist's production in contextual terms, as an heir to an art tradition that has in the nineteenth century its first golden age: the political and social cartoon. Then, after a brief consideration of the analysis of images in historical studies, two cartoons produced by Agostini on the great theme of abolitionism are interpreted as exemplary analysis.

How to escape censorship when graphic art is under surveillance by an authoritarian government? Which subterfuges can artists use to enforce their message, so to make themselves understood by their audience? These are the two questions inspiring the following paper, which analyzes the production of Belmonte, a famous caricaturist from São Paulo who gained prominence between the 1920s and 1940s. Guided by a Cultural History of the Political and by the documentary method for analysis of images, the article demonstrates how the Brazilian artist experienced and managed to overcome censorship during Getúlio Vargas' Estado Novo. In particular, one of his main strategies, i.e., the performativity of the caricatured characters, is scrutinized.

The violence perpetrated by some Islamic fundamentalist groups in recent years, particularly the murder of the French cartoonists who worked for Charlie Hebdo, in early 2015, bring up doubts in the Western societies regarding the nature of their economic system, their global interconnection, the democracy, and specifically the freedoms. This article analyzes some cartoons of Muhammad published by the Danish newspaper Jyllands‐ Posten, in 2005, and by the French newspaper Charlie Hebdo, in 2012, and it explores their humor, their violence, and the reactions raised by them. The brief reflections derived from the analysis of these cases lead us to a discussion about the 'Western' tradition of satire, addressing religious freedom and freedom of expression, in addition to the very idea of democracy. Theories proposed by classic authors, such as Montesquieu and Stuart Mill, as well as those by contemporary authors who thought of the democratic freedoms, such as John Rawls and Pierre Rosanvallon are addressed, situating this relevant debate of contemporaneity in the long‐term. This short essay promotes the debate about the limits of humor, especially in its relation to religions and politics nowadays.

This paper presents a reflection on the places of memory and emotions in the political field, making some specific considerations on the cartoons as historical sources, i.e., about its historicity and its relations to political passions and violence. A detailed examination of political cartoons is made by reflecting on elements such as the 'place of production' and the target audience. Finally, the text deals with the historiographical analysis of cartoons, taking them as historical sources and proposing a methodology for their interpretation. This methodology is fundamentally based on the Documentary Method proposed by German sociologist Ralf Bohnsack and largely inspired by Mannheim's Sociology of Knowledge and Bourdieu's Praxeological Sociology. From its assumptions, it is undertaken an exercise in analysis of a political cartoon from the Nazi weekly Der Stürmer, intending to demonstrate the varying levels of meaning which operate on a source of this nature and the very dynamics that violence and political passions can present in a cartoon.

It’s proposed in this article a reflection on the central elements present in the authoritarian rightwing
thinking developed between the 1920s and the 1930s. Focusing on the writings of Carl Schmitt (Germany)
and Francisco Campos (Brazil), the paper is a comparative piece between their works, as they were members of
an intellectual elite that would eventually forge the legal and ideological structure of the Estado Novo and the
Nazi State. The here proposed analysis is a constant juxtaposition of the ideas from the European matrix,
especially the Schmittianwritings The Concept of the Political and Political Theology, with those that resulted in
Campos main work, The National State. Taking the writings of Carl Schmitt compared with those of Francisco
Campos, two jurists who acted in the foreground of political debates in their countries and were decisive in the
search for legitimacy to the dictatorships that were stablished, the reflections proposed here seek to verify the
synchronicities and the points of divergence between the theoretical frameworks of both authors, resulting in a
comprehensive and qualitative characterization of their thoughts.

The purpose of this paper is to discuss the state of the art in the historiography of the South American dictatorships from the 1960s to the 1980s, with special emphasis on the Brazilian regime and historiographical production. In this sense, the main currents and themes of the field are addressed, from the pioneering studies by the brazilianists Guillermo O'Donnell, Alfred Stepan and Juan Linz to the more recent efforts, encouraged by the anniversaries of military coups and the events and discussions which these dates have stimulated. The memory and the conceptualization of the regimes, their constituent elements, their victims, and the studies on the nature, the connections and the legacy of each of them are perennial issues in the historiographical works present in this overview. In addition, the issue of the Brazilian Truth Commission in comparative perspective is highlighted in the here proposed reflections.

This paper focuses on cartoons produced by Benedito Carneiro Bastos Barreto, the Belmonte, cartoonist of the Brazilian newspaper Folha da Manhã (São Paulo) during the Second World War. The set of cartoons analyzed here refers to representations of women and femininity in the game of power of the global conflict, which covers both feminine allegories representing countries as well as feminized or cross-dressing representations of world leaders. These images make it possible to reflect (with the support of psychoanalytic, aesthetic and political theories) on the image of women in Brazilian society at the time, but also on the relationship between the representations of femininity, humor and violence that is put in evidence through the cartoons. The mental images related to the representations discussed here provide a framework for thought and practice that justifies the submission and distrust towards the feminine gender, and also regulates, on various levels, men's violence and advances. It is, ultimately, the reaffirmation of a structure of domination subtly reproduced (and normalized) through the humorous speech of the cartoons.

The constant increase of research and studies on images within the humanities made it necessary to develop methods and theories that assist the academics on his task. The here presented documentary method counts as one of the principal qualitative methodologies for this purpose. Developed by Ralf Bohnsack, this theory is based on Panofsky’s theories combined with concepts by Bourdieu (habitus) and Mannheim (Weltanschauung). It proposes a deeper analysis of the source, changing the focus from the search for the immanent meaning to the search for the documentary meaning. Furthermore, according to the documentary method, the formal elements of a picture as well as a text are important. For this task of the analysis Imdahl’s theory on Art History serves as foundation. This paper overviews this qualitative method. Afterwards the method is applied to interpret a particular type of art, the political cartoon. In order to demonstrate the use and the possible results of this methodology, two cartoons of the notorious Nazi newspaper Der Stürmer are examined in a comparative way.

In the wake of the celebrations and recollections of the World War I centenary and the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II, this special issue proposes discussions and reflections on the legacy of the violence that permeated the twentieth century. By highlighting the theme of wars and revolutions, the emphasis is placed on the historicity of the major events that marked the last century, although discussions about the nature of modern violence, memory policies and cultural expressions engendered by it are equally welcomed.
