The ecosystem services framework has enabled the broader public to acknowledge the benefits nature provides to different stakeholders. However, not all stakeholders benefit equally from these services. Rather, power relationships are a key factor influencing the access of individuals or groups to ecosystem services. In this paper, we propose an adapta-tion of the “cascade ” framework for ecosystem services to integrate the analysis of ecologi-cal interactions among ecosystem services and stakeholders ’ interactions, reflecting power relationships that mediate ecosystem services flows. We illustrate its application using the floodplain of the River Piedra (Spain) as a case study. First, we used structural equation modelling (SEM) to model the dependence relationships among ecosystem services. Sec-ond, we performed semi-structured interviews to identify formal power relationships among stakeholders. Third, we depicted ecosystem services according to stakeholders ’ ability to use, mana...

The inherent resistance of synthetic plastics to degradation has led to an increasing challenge of waste accumulation problem and created a pollution issue that can only be addressed with novel complementary methods such as biodegradation. Since biocontrol is a promising eco-friendly option to address this challenge, the identification of suitable biological agents is a crucial requirement. Among the existing options, organisms of the Streptomyces genus have been reported to biodegrade several complex polymeric macromolecules such as chitin, lignin, and cellulose. Therefore, this systematic review aimed to evaluate the potential of Streptomyces strains for the biodegradation of synthetic plastics. The results showed that although Streptomyces strains are widely distributed in different ecosystems in nature, few studies have explored their capacity as degraders of synthetic polymers. Moreover, most of the research in this field has focused on Streptomyces strains with promising biotr...

In recent years, a profusion of methods, practices, and experiences has emerged in the interface between arts and sustainability science. Drawing from two strong currents within sustainability science, namely, the emphasis on transdisciplinary approaches and the need to move towards societal transformations, such hybrid approaches seemingly contribute with unique methods to sustainability research. Despite repeated claims from sustainability scientists about art’s role in sustainability transformations, joint analyses with artists and practitioners are still rare. We conveyed a collaborative and exploratory workshop with scientists, artists, and practitioners from the fields of education, public engagement, and activism to identify the potentials for arts-based sustainability research. Participants were invited to facilitate and trial various artistic practices from disciplines of performative, literary, narrative, audio-visual and plastic arts. In this paper, we present five key ar...

Current financial, social and environmental crisis in Spain has fostered the development and spread of a diverse range of collective civil actions and movements. Most of these already existed before the breakpoint of the crisis but have become more visible as effective alternatives in the face of the welfare state's dismantling. Drawing from the statement "the personal is political" (C Hanisch; 1970), daily-life actions, decisions, behaviors, attitudes, relationships, from individual to collective, are used as political devices to "kick over the traces". Some examples of initiatives are timebanks, consumer associations, urban communal homegardens, collective breeding groups, social and local currencies and "Spanishrevolution" neighborhood assemblies. In this work we particularly tackle initiatives focusing their action in everydays'-life dimensions (eg. care, household economy, employ, mobility, food) and relying on the commons idiosyncrasy. Eth...

Millions of Spanish people have been protesting against austerity policies and their consequences. The Spanish government has responded with a law on public security that leads to a severe restriction of civil rights to demonstrate and protest. In recent years, activists have already faced increasing repression, with a rise in financial penalties and arrests as well as bodily harm even in nonviolent demonstrations. With the new law on public security, civil rights have been even further restricted: High penalties are foreseen for activities that form the core of the civic right to express opinions and protest. Spain is not the only European country weakening human rights protection. This development should not be treated mainly as a matter of national affairs. It threatens essential aspects of the European political culture and its values.
