The Essayistic Novel and Mode of Life: Musil's The Man Without Qualities2014 •

"It was more or less in the way an essay … explores a thing from many sides without wholly encompassing it … that he believed he could most rightly survey and handle the world and his own life" (Musil). Dialogue and dialogism offer one of the most promising paths to interality in the West. Concentrating on the Renaissance tradition of the Humanist dialogue and more recent philosophical practices and theories of dialogue in the 20th century, we will see--most notably through a close examination of two major literary and philosophical works: Thomas More’s Utopia and Robert Musil’s The Man without Qualities--that one can trace an (interrupted) line between these two transitional historical periods, set at both ends of the “Gutenberg parenthesis”, when relational, dialogic and thus potentially “interalogical” modes of writing, thinking and being came to the forefront.

Emotions and Literature in Musil2019 •
The question of how literature can evoke emotions is a familiar one, as is the idea that a good work of literature arouses the right emotion in the right place through our capacity for sympathy. However, there is no consensus on how this works, partly because there is no agreement on the nature of emotions. One figure that contributes to both of these topics is Robert Musil. As a thinker and as a novelist, he had both a theory of emotions and a novelistic treatment of them. His novels are notable, however, for the way in which they do not appeal to the reader's capacity for sympathy, owing partly to the formlessness of his characters. Yet it is precisely the gap he creates between fiction and emotional reality that allows for a richer investigation of the relationship between emotions and literature.
In Austrian Studies, the debate continues as to whether postcolonial theory is applicable to the Hapsburg monarchy. This article seeks to contribute to this debate by analysing discursive structures common to the continental empires rooted in medieval structures and to modern colonial empires, as well as critically assessing some of their specificities. To this end, I analyse the Utopia of an " Imperialism of the Spirit " present in the essays of two central Viennese modernists, Hugo von Hofmannsthal and Robert Müller, demonstrating the discursive construction of a particular kind of imperialism and nationalism based on culture and the arts. I further show, focusing on Robert Müller's and Robert Musil's major novels, how imperialism functions as a fulcrum of the complex relation of modernist literature with the paradigm of modernity. At the same time, imperialism is also the object of critique and rewriting in the context of the resolution of the many crises of modernity, especially that of the Subject.
