21st Century Education

In this study, it is aimed to determine the skill levels of 21st century learners and the relationship between these skills. The sample of this study, which is conducted with correlational research design, was determined by the convenient sampling method. The participants of the study consisted of 183 students in total studying at Atatürk University. Correlational and descriptive analysis techniques were used to analyze the data which was collected via Computational Thinking Scale, Digital Literacy Scale and Effective Communication Skills Scale. When the descriptive findings were examined, it was understood that the students generally had most of the skills but experienced ambivalence about the algorithmic thinking skills. As a result of the correlation analysis, it was found that critical thinking, problem solving, creativity, empathy and active-participative listening were significantly related to all variables. On the other hand, digital literacy skills were found to be significantly correlated with all variables examined in the scope of the study, except I-language. It was determined that the relationship between ego supportive language, active-participative listening, self-recognition/self-disclosure, and I-language skills and algorithmic thinking was not significant. The variables with the highest correlation coefficient were found to be creativity and critical thinking.

The doctoral dissertation is defined as an original contribution to a field. By definition, this makes the dissertation a creative product, and the result of a creative process. The creative process of doctoral work has historically not been highlighted. The same is true for education as a whole. While there is an increasing call for greater creativity in education, they remain aspirational. In this article we describe the underlying premises and some of the practices of a doctoral degree that has been designed with the intention of foregrounding the creative process.

Arts integration and 21st century skills are increasingly relevant to addressing complex student needs in contemporary education. The Creative Classroom Collaboratives: Creativity, Confidence, & Competence (C32) study found that comprehensive arts integration approaches and peer-to-peer professional collaborations between teachers, teaching artists, and cultural partners such as museums, theaters, and arts councils had a positive relationship to students’ achievement and 21st century skill development. By reinforcing criteria that make up the core 21st century skills of creativity, critical thinking, collaboration, and communication, arts integration methods were associated with increases in student learning in a cluster randomized control trial of a study of fourth- and fifth-grade students in two school districts with low socioeconomic status on Long Island, New York. This study includes implications for arts integration in schools, peer professional development and teaching practices, and dynamic partnerships with arts and cultural partners.

The Fourth Industrial Revolution (IR 4.0) has emerged as one of the most influential contributor in the development and landscape of the modern world. Students in tertiary education are expected to get out of the way to meet the challenges posed by IR 4.0. One of the fields that is affected by this wave of revolution is Education, therefore it is pertinent for a University to provide space and opportunity for future graduates to have a sense of self-identity and competitive ability. Following this view, a student's university experience is significantly correlated with the development of his well-being. The development includes the acquisition of knowledge and skills in their field of choice, although it is generally preferable for a student to acquire skills in various fields. Competent students are those who are well-equipped with knowledge, skills and values that are relevant to current practice. Drawing from this idea, the purpose of this paper is to evaluate students' challenges, skills, and preparations at the University in facing the IR 4.0 era. A qualitative case study was conducted, employing interviews and document analysis to obtain data from 35 respondents. The respondents were comprised of university students who were selected through purposive sampling. The findings identified several main skills; career and life skills, learning and innovation skills, information, media and technology skills. This study discussed the possible scenarios that might be faced by the students and the university in depth. Based on the findings, proactive measures are needed to encourage students to improve their skills, particularly the skills related to information technology, knowledge, and personal soft skills. Such measures are crucial to fulfil the challenges of IR 4.0.

Social Studies is a key tool in this changing world. It serves as the foundation of social development across the country and acts as an agent of change that transforms an individual into an effective citizen of the nation. Moreover, the Philippine K to 12 curriculum accentuates the role of social studies in developing the learners' literacy and effective engagement as a citizen of the country. This study descriptive study aims to elicit the junior high school students' perspectives on the significance of social studies in 21st-century society. It involved 25 Grade 7 students enrolled in a public secondary school in Zambales, Philippines. This study used a qualitative descriptive design with a semi-structured interview guide as the primary gathering tool. Thematic analysis was used in analyzing the data. Five major themes emerged from the categorized statements of the participants. Social studies is still relevant today as it encourages community participation, enhances critical and creative thinking, fosters cultural sensitivity, broadens global perspective, and promotes values formation. Moreover, participants claimed that social studies promotes cultural heritage, fosters economic efficiency, serves as a source of meaningful information, and brings people back to the past. The study recommends that teachers should enhance their technological pedagogical content knowledge (TPACK) in Social Studies to keep abreast with the demands of 21 st-century society. Further, teachers are encouraged to make the teaching of Social Studies contextualized, indigenized and localized to make it responsive and relevant in the current setting.

This study investigates the relationship between the twenty-first-century learning model (4Cs) and student performance-effectiveness through the mediating effect of student satisfaction. A stratified random sampling of 512 students in Thailand was used for the quantitative approach. The collected data were analysed using the PLS-SEM program and SPSS Version 27. The results reveal that student satisfaction is the significant mediator between the twenty-first-century learning model (communication, creativity, critical thinking, and collaboration) and student performance-effectiveness. It indicates that communication, critical thinking, collaboration, and creativity significantly influence student satisfaction. Moreover, communication has the most significant influence on student performance-effectively, followed by collaboration and creativity. Only critical thinking does not considerably influence student performance-effectiveness. The educational leaders, program directors and teachers should pay attention to the twenty-first-century model (4Cs) to increase student satisfaction and performance-effectiveness.

Introduction: Faced with an imminent digital era marked by globalization and technological innovation, different organizations raised the importance of innovating education with the so-called 21st-century competencies. The need for new skills to participate in digital culture is highlighted in the different proposals, where digital competence is fundamental to live, work and participate in Knowledge Society. Methodology: This work aims to generate an integrated proposal of digital literacy through a comparative analysis of digital competence in eight frameworks of 21st-century skills (ATCS, enGauge, Naep, Nets, OECD, P21, UNESCO, European Union), which they are studied in three main thematic blocks: a) definition, b) objectives and vision, c) competencies and abilities. Results: Digital literacy encompasses a holistic approach, nurtured by different literacies, from which a meta-framework with nine competencies is built: three direct competencies, 1) information and data, 2) communication and collaboration, and 3) technical; five transversal competencies, 4) problem solving, 5) global citizenship and multicultural awareness, 6) interpersonal, 7) future thinking, 8) creative thinking and 9) critical thinking; and 53 cognitive, critical, technical, social, emotional and projective digital skills. Conclusions: Multidimensional digital literacy consolidates the techno-social perspective for empowerment and technological appropriation, which exceeds the operational use of tools and guarantees the broad, meaningful, and innovative use of technology for the construction of an equitable society, decent employment, social participation, among other purposes that are connected with the Sustainable Development Goals.

The relevance of current education towards the needs of 21st century society is questioned as most schools, especially in developing countries that offer their students homogenizing learning experiences in the 19th century style. This paper presents the results of a mixed-method study focused on identifying the main features of 21st century education as a concept that should promote lifelong learning experiences. The method combined a systematic literature review, survey application, visits to innovative schools and interviews with international educational experts. Results show the relevance of a soft skills-centered and purpose-oriented curricula, the activation of personal learning paths and the minimization of instruction in favor of research as a teaching approach. It is noteworthy that, although most of the results are widely discussed in the literature, they are currently presented with new possibilities of implementation and with a greater innovation potential, due to the technological evolution of our time.

Although 21st-century education has been widely debated and presented in the literature, the reality of today's schools, especially in developing countries, shows a very distant image of what should be a flexible, personalized, soft skills-oriented education, based on the use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT). To address this situation should be the first step in order to understand it and provide concrete work elements for teachers, school principals and policymakers, especially for those who work in adverse educational contexts. This article presents a systematic literature review focused on the identification of critical ideas about 21st-century education as possible factors of a transformation of the current school. The review included 780 research reports on 21st-century education, which were coded and processed through text mining. A selection of 101 reports was read in-depth and qualitatively analyzed. The results revealed that although most of the critical ideas related to 21st-century education are not brand new, they are flourishing, like sleeping beauties, with new possibilities of implementation due to the evolution of current technological development. Some of the educational sleeping beauties to highlight are personal learning paths, research-based teaching, open, flexible and digitally supported curriculum, and lifelong learning. R E S U M E N Aunque la educación del siglo XXI ha sido ampliamente debatida y presentada en la literatura, la realidad de las escuelas actuales, especialmente en los países en desarrollo, muestra una imagen muy alejada de lo que debería ser una educación flexible, personalizada, orientada al desarrollo de habilidades blandas y basada en el uso de Tecnologías de la Información y la Comunicación (TIC). Abordar esta situación en detalle sería el primer paso para comprenderla y proporcionar elementos de trabajo concretos para los docentes, los directores escolares y los responsables de la política educativa, especialmente para aquellos que trabajan en contextos educativos adver-sos. Este artículo presenta una revisión sistemática de literatura centrada en la identificación de ideas clave sobre la educación del siglo XXI como posibles factores de transformación de la actual escuela. La revisión incluyó 780 informes de investigación sobre la educación del siglo XXI, 101 de los cuales fueron leídos en profundidad y analizados cualitativamente. Los resultados reve-laron que, si bien la mayoría de las ideas clave relacionadas con la educación del siglo XXI no son completamente nuevas, están floreciendo, como bellas durmientes, con nuevas posibilidades de implementación debido a la evolución del desarrollo tecnológico actual. Algunas de las bellas durmientes educativas a destacar son: las rutas personales de aprendizaje, la enseñanza basada en la investigación, el currículo abierto, flexible y apoyado digitalmente y el aprendizaje a lo largo de la vida.
