Casanova

El documento resume los recientes desarrollos que, en materia de reformas y modificaciones, existen sobre los principales componentes del sistema previsional en Argentina y también aporta datos e información estadística actualizada respecto de las dimensiones más relevantes del sistema previsional. Además, el documento aporta algunas ideas que pueden servir de base para discutir una política previsional futura, cuyo propósito sea redefinir y configurar algunos componentes esenciales del sistema con el objeto de lograr una cobertura universal de ciertas garantías mínimas de seguridad de ingreso sobre bases sustentables y, a la vez, reconstituir un componente contributivo que garantice cierta proporcionalidad entre contribuciones y prestaciones.

Miklós Szentkuthy — born Miklós Pfisterer, in 1908 — introduced himself to Budapest’s literary circles in 1934 with a self-published novel, Prae, and he remained a provocative figure until his death in 1988. Szentkuthy is still referred to as the “sacred monster” of Hungarian letters, and the expression is apt. His huge output — foremost, the “Romanesque cathedral” that is the Breviary — is at once speculative and manneristic, hyper-erotic and hyper-religious, bleary eyed and clear-sighted.       

Szentkuthy’s ambition was medieval: to produce a catalogus rerum, “an index of all entities.” His method is “Hellenistic-rococo”: he writes spirited variations on the letter of the canon. His syntax and affect are irreverently modernist, yet there is nothing programmatic about his avant-gardism, and what he wrote of Casanova holds true of him as well: “the muck of literary program is not allowed to dirty his white cuffs.” In the Marginalia, “metaphysical facts,” “factual truths,” and deliriums are calculated to transect “with the epic grace of an apoplectic fit.” It is not accidental, then, that he was thrilled by the expression of the15th-century polymath, Nicolas of Cusa — echoed by Romantics like Novalis and Coleridge — that the essence of all things is a coincidentia oppositorum: a “coincidence of opposites.” Szentkuthy is, himself, such a coincidence. ...

Italian filmmaker Federico Fellini (1920-1993) is one of the most renowned figures in world cinema. Often comic, sometimes tragic, and rife with insightful comments on his craft, Making a Film sheds light on Fellini's life and reveals the motivations behind many of his most fascinating movies.

Available in its entirety for the first time in English, this volume contains the complete translation of Fare un film, the authoritative collection of writings edited and reworked by Fellini and initially published by Giulio Einaudi in 1980. The text includes a new translation of the Italo Calvino essay "A Spectator's Autobiography," an introduction by Italian film scholar Christopher B. White, and an afterword by Fellini's longtime friend and collaborator Liliana Betti.

The emerging area of the Philosophy of Birth is invaluable, first, to diagnose fallacious assumptions about the relation between the womb and reason, and, ultimately, to challenge potentially damaging narratives with major impact on birth care. With its analysis of eighteenth century epistemic and medical discussions about the role of the uterus in women's reasoning (or lack of reasoning), this article supports two arguments: first, that women's "flawed thinking" was a premise drawn by many modern intellectual men, one that was presented as based upon empirical evidence; and second, that the pervasive construction of the uterus as an element that renders women wild, uncontrollable, and irrational continues to influence contemporary obstetrics (and maybe even to nurture obstetric violence), even as today's medicine and science consider themselves to be free of any such prejudices.
    This article shows the role that Giacomo Casanova played in debunking these prejudices and presents his short manuscript on the issue as an important contribution to the literature of the Enlightenment, with its argument against women's supposed "natural" inferiority and for the idea that differences in education (rather than anatomical differences) were to blame for women's subordinate position in society.
    Detailed analysis of the "thinking uterus" debate illuminates the different ways in which various arguments from/by the "anti-uterine" lobby were used to justify the subordination of women: sometimes emphasizing the connection between the uterus and thought and sometimes negating it, but always concluding that women's inferiority is to be found in some known or yet-to-be-discovered anatomical, and mainly sexual, deficiency or problem.

Galileiano d’alcova, sperimentatore per definizione, Casanova scrive in francese e pensa sia nella lingua di Ariosto sia in quella di Voltaire, ma in ogni piega del suo discorso c’è infine il teatro. Egli è attore delle due commedie sia quella all’improvviso sia di quella in cui la partitura è scritta giorno per giorno e poi di nuovo, alla fine della propria vita, con un talento felice e una dedizione allo scrittorio non inferiore a quella avuta per il tavolo da gioco. Monumentale e pluridialogica la sua Histoire de ma vie mette in relazione il modello umorale della Vita di Cellini con l’ossessiva trasparenza promossa dalle Confessions di Rousseau. Ora questo scrittore dal successo postumo, ma sempre più accreditato, va finalmente interrogato dalla parte di lei, perché l’uomo sovrastato dai meriti del narratore possa finalmente riemergere con tutte le sue debolezze e risorse incontrando il lettore che ha così ben circuito, come un seduttore imperfetto ma tenace. Le lettere scritte a Casanova fanno tacere l’avventato parere di chi ritiene che il rapporto con l’altro sesso sia un’arte di ovidiana sagacia e frivola compostezza e non quella pericolosa esperienza che è mescolare vita con l’altrui vita. Così le donne di carta smetteranno di essere figurine di alcova per rientrare nella loro esistenza settecentesca, sfarzosa e precaria e, più di ogni altra cosa, non arrendevole.

The article investigates an episode from Giacomo Casanova’s life concerning his stay in Wrocław, which was described in his biography entitled Histoire de ma vie. The analysis takes into consideration the structure of the whole biography. The main purpose of this article is to find in this work the most characteristic features of Casanova’s writing, as well as information on this period, its main representatives and the historical background of Wrocław of that time. Casanova, leaving Poland after a duel with Franciszek Ksawery Branicki, decides to go to Dresden, where his family lives, spending three days in Wrocław. In this short time Casanova makes the acquaintance of Abbot Bastiani, a very interesting person. At the same time, Casanova meets a young girl and once more begins to believe in love. The part of his biography concerning Wrocław provides an opportunity to analyse psychological aspects of these two people.

This article is about the cultural heritage of a men’s movement,
called PickUp, which gained momentum in the United States
during the 1990s. It finds that the seduction techniques they use
can be traced back to historical seducers. The discourse of
seduction is reconstructed by identifying four stages in seduction
culture from early modernity to the present. Thus contextualized,
the article interpretatively examines three cases of three famous
seducers: Don Juan, Giacomo Casanova, and Søren Kierkegaard,
while highlighting their changing masculinities as connected to
class position and affectual control. Providing insights into
particular social constellations and emotional dynamics of
seduction, the study finds a number of ‘social tropes’ that play a
pivotal role in all the scenes portrayed. Moreover, they have
strong structural equivalencies within the actively applied means
of seduction that the PickUp-Artist’s methodology prescribes,
which is outlined in several advice books that are part of the
contemporary self-help discourse. The conclusion comes back to
seduction’s complicated history, the theory of social tropes, and
problematizes the changing faces of masculinity within them.

This essay begins with a critique of several arguments against the possibility of cosmopolitan thought and practice, and therefore, of a “cosmopolitan identity”.
In the first part, it takes as a historical example various aspects of the cosmopolitanism of European Jews: was it real or imagined by antisemitic, xenophobic and nationalist citizens of Europe to justify exclusion and persecution? Was it forced upon these people by the oppression they suffered in the diaspora, or was it deliberate (and idealistic/utopian)?
The second and third parts study several manners of constructing cosmopolitan characters and collective cosmopolitan identities in literary fiction, first with the figure of Casanova, then through a detailed analysis of Salman Rushdie’s novel The Enchantress of Florence.
Some close readings lead us back to European Jews from the Middle Ages to the 18th century, with the legend of the Jewess of Toledo and its many rewritings.
Amitav Ghosh’s oeuvre and particularly his Ibis Trilogy introduce us to the represented fullness of a cosmopolitan world in the guise of a historical fiction situated grossly in the mid-19th century. But can this elaborate geographical, linguistic and symbolic construction, full of extraordinary personalities and unusual encounters, constitute a paradigm for a viable cosmopolitanism today?
The answer partly depends on what we mean by “narrative identity,” self-othering and the relational nature of selves in formation. But, in any case, literature and art can help because of their anaphoric character and the open-endedness of time in the aesthetic experience.

Casanova, as he himself admits in his undisciplined memoirs, fully committed his life to a disorganized and non-systematic cultivation of pleasure. In such lack of stability, which affects the identity as well as the actions of the narrator, the energy of desire is revealed in its most vital and powerful forms: a desire for recognition, glory and literary immortality, which is a desire for the Other; a desire for transcendence, but also for new secular horizons, which is a desire for the Elsewhere; a desire for the lover’s words, which is the amorous desire that recomposes the bodies fragmented and made into pieces by sexual desire. Nevertheless a deliberate libertine project – the wide-ranging exploration of natural appetites – seems to traverse the whole Histoire de ma vie, and underlie this narrative codification of sexual desire. As Leonardo Sciascia pointed out, Casanova’s quest for absolute liberty culminates in the celebration of the most extreme action of vitalism – incest. While the incestuous intrigue of the memoirs are famous, less known is the representation of incest Casanova gives in the Jcosameron. In this utopian novel, through the story of a young brother and his sister, initiated to the elevated dimension of consanguineous love by the inhabitants of the centre of the earth, the writer thus finds a possibility to speak publicly about something prohibited, unutterable.

Muovendo dal piccolo feudo di Villamaina, in Irpinia, il marchese Domenico Caracciolo scalò le vette della carriera diplomatica internazionale, divenendo ambasciatore del Regno delle due Sicilie a Torino (1753), poi a Londra (1763) ed infine a Parigi (1771). Fu Viceré di Sicilia dal 1781 e Primo ministro (1786-1789) di Ferdinando IV di Borbone.
Intellettuale poliedrico ed esperto riformatore, ebbe legami strettissimi con i più celebri illuministi britannici e francesi: Hume, Helvetius, D’Alembert, Diderot, D’Holbach. Fu il primo italiano ad ottenere l’affiliazione alla Royal Society, celeberrima accademia londinese fondata da Isac Newton. La sua cultura ed il suo mecenatismo spaziavano dalle scienze naturali alla musica, passando ovviamente per la letteratura. Frequentò i musicisti Mozart, Bach, Piccinni (che fece venire alla corte di Francia) e, tra i matematici, mantenne relazioni strettissime con Lagrange, Frisi, Condorcet.
Amico di Filippo Mazzei, Vittorio Alfieri, Ferdinando Galiani e finanche del libertino Giacomo Casanova, fu intimo dei reali di Francia e molto apprezzato dai loro più illustri funzionari: Turgot e Necker. Restò in corrispondenza con i padri costituenti dei neonati Stati Uniti americani (Adams, Jefferson e Franklin). A Parigi il nostro fu “l’Ambasciatore dei Lumi” per la sua fama di sagace e vivacissimo conversatore nei salotti alla moda. A Palermo fu invece il “boia dell’Inquisizione”, che abolì senza tentennamenti, ed il fustigatore integerrimo della tracotanza baronale. Rientrato a Napoli come Primo ministro, si occupò di numerose riforme, conferendo assoluta priorità alla valorizzazione del patrimonio culturale.
Madame de Staël lo definirà un uomo di “straordinaria cultura e di grandissima lepidezza”.
Domenico Caracciolo fu il primo vero Statista di un regno preunitario italiano, personaggio ben più in vista, a livello mondiale, finanche del conte di Cavour. Come sia stato possibile che una figura di tanto elevato spessore sia rimasta relegata tra i cosiddetti “personaggi minori”, resta assolutamente un mistero. Questo lavoro di ricerca si pone prioritariamente l’obiettivo di restituirgli quella giusta centralità che la Storia gli ha finora inspiegabilmente negato.

This article examines Fellini's use of Petrarch and Ariosto in Il Casanova. The author argues that they exemplify two different artistic conceptions: Petrarch incarnates an art that is solipsistic, perfect, self-enclosed, intellectual, and all serious; Ariosto an art that is open, collaborative, imperfect, anti-intellectual, and allows irony. Casanova, in the scenes when he recites lines from these two poets, subscribes to the Petrarchan type and misinterprets the Ariostean. Fellini, on the contrary, critiques the Petrarchan type by associating it with the de-humanizing intercourse of Casanova with a mechanical doll and by hinting at incest; he then embraces the Ariostean type by ridiculing Casanova's misinterpretation of Ariosto through an Ariostean kind of irony.

La rilettura degli autori che nel Settecento hanno vissuto in prima persona la caduta della Serenissima permette di ricostruire la genesi dei tragici avvenimenti del 1796 e 1797. Nonostante il deterrente del suo esercito, Napoleone Bonaparte non fu la causa decisiva del cambio di governo: dalla disamina delle azioni dei Savi e dello stesso doge friulano Lodovico Manin emerge l'evidenza di una serie di atti illegali che configura un effettivo colpo di Stato. 

Giacomo Casanova, nato a Venezia il 2 aprile 1725, nonostante sia stato uno scrittore vivace e prolifico, incarna nell'immaginario collettivo la figura dell'avventuriero per antonomasia. E avventurosa appare, senz'altro, anche la vicenda editoriale del suo più grande successo letterario. Accanto alla grande tradizione editoriale, avviatasi a Lipsia nel 1822, l'Histoire de ma vie vede svolgersi parallelamente un'altra storia, estremamente avvincente, fatta di estratti, stampe parziali, episodi singoli, edizioni a fascicoli. Ripercorrerne la storia editoriale significa restituire uno spettacolo affascinante, fatto di protagonisti ma anche di comprimari e di comparse, di grandi successi ma anche di edizioni passate sotto silenzio. Gianluca Simeoni, studioso casanoviano e membro del board della rivista «Casanoviana», orchestra lo spettacolo restituendoci una geografia editoriale complessa e avvincente, dove ogni scheda diventa uno stimolo ad approfondire veri e propri intrighi librari e collezionistici.

Horace est une des références les plus fréquentes de Casanova, comme d'ailleurs de tout son siècle ; mais le rapport entre les deux auteurs va bien au-delà de la citation mondaine convenue : Casanova tire d'Horace une leçon philosophique profonde qui forme un des piliers sa propre philosophie asystémique de l'existence.

La segunda edición del estudio caracteriza la reducción de la informalidad laboral en Argentina entre 2003 y 2012, identificando los factores que explican esta tendencia luego de la crisis económica de 2001-2002. También identifica los segmentos críticos del mercado laboral y las políticas para la formalización, incluyendo la Ley de Promoción del Trabajo Registrado y Prevención del Fraude Laboral promulgada en mayo de 2014.

Une des grandes surprises de l’Histoire de ma vie, pour qui découvre les mémoires de Casanova, est la diversité des thèmes que le Vénitien aborde, loin du stéréotype du séducteur tout entier occupé à écrire, au soir de sa vie, son catalogo. De ce point de vue, un des traits les plus surprenants est sans doute l’intérêt que porte Casanova à la vie économique concrète, intérêt en apparence si peu érogène que même les casanovistes ne l’ont guère examiné. À tort : le Vénitien consacre plusieurs dizaines de pages, au fil de ses mémoires, aux activités financières et manufacturières auxquelles, toujours courant derrière la fortune, il aspire à prendre part. En aventurier de son temps, il découvre en Hollande, à Paris ou à la bourse de Londres des techniques financières et assurantielles en plein développement, fondées sur les mêmes avancées du calcul de probabilité que celles qu’il met en oeuvre aux tables de jeu de toute l’Europe.
Tenant le juste milieu entre le chevalier d’industrie et le chevalier de l’industrie, Casanova multiplie, conformément à une autre passion de l’époque, les projets de manufactures ; un des seuls qu’il a menés à bien, une fabrique d’étoffes installée dans l’enclos du Temple à Paris, dont il décrit l’organisation en grand détail, révèle un Casanova curieux des techniques d’organisation du travail les plus avancées, mais toujours rattrapé par la tentation de forcer la chance, de cesser de quantifier le risque et de s’abandonner, pour le meilleur et pour le pire, aux puissances du destin. Par bien des aspects, l’aventurier qu’est Casanova se confond pour cette part de ses activités avec un type d’homme nouveau, l’homme à projets, qui connaît un succès si vif en ce milieu du XVIIIe siècle qu’un mot émerge pour le désigner, « entrepreneur ». Casanova, en tant qu’aventurier, est un homme pour le risque ; or à la même époque, l’économiste Richard Cantillon, dans son essai Essai sur la nature du commerce en général, conceptualise ce qui fonde la spécificité de l’entrepreneur : c’est le décalage entre des frais fixes et des revenus incertains, bref, le risque qu’il court. Quoique le rapport à l’argent de Casanova soit toujours placé sous le signe de la dépense, cet aspect méconnu de la vie et de la pensée du Vénitien ne peut qu’enrichir la perception d’un personnage infiniment plus complexe que ne le voudrait sa légende rose.

Libro eccentrico anche tra i memoriali settecenteschi, l'Histoire de ma vie non ha altri obiettivi che restituire intatto il sapore del disordine e della felicità lungamente assaporati da Casanova. Nessun lettore potrebbe trovarvi un inizio né una fine o un fine plausibili, né una logica, né un sistema, né uno sviluppo.
A differenza di tanti suoi compagni di viaggio letterari - da Tom Jones a Gil Blas a Roderick Random -, l'errante Casanova non cerca nulla, neppure una casa: giovanissimo abate a Martorano, fugge a Roma; soldato della Repubblica a Corfú, ritorna a Venezia nei panni di un violinista; commissario del lotto a Parigi, corre a Ferney; finalmente bibliotecario a Dux del conte Waldestein, anche da Dux vorrebbe andarsene per sempre.
Di questa euforia picaresca, o sterniana religione del moto, Ficara studia alcune intermittenze malinconiche, effetto non tanto della ripetizione, dell' egarement licenzioso o d'una peculiare superficialità macchinistica, quanto, invece, del risorgere subitaneo e spaventevole del desiderio, della pena, della bellezza, della nostalgia, dell'amour-passion nel teatro dell'amour-goût.
Tale «profondità» richiede una diversa forma di narrazione, cioè l'ordine romanzesco, ed è proprio ai piccoli abissi dell'Histoire - Henriette, la monaca veneziana, la Charpillon - che Casanova affida, controvoglia, il suo malinconico ed eccezionale talento di romanziere.

Que Europa foi essa que serviu de palco ao "século de Frederico" (Jahrhundert Friedrichs) e onde se assistiu à eclosão de "uma nova teoria e prática do governo, que [encontrou] a sua expressão típica na qualificação do Estado como Estado «de polícia»" (Astuti, 1984: 251)? E quais foram as principais "artes de não ser governado" por relação com as quais se foi construindo esse mesmo Estado? O que se segue é um estudo da figura do "libertino" setecentista na sua qualidade de agente ambivalente, heteróclito e paradoxal, cujo raio de acção nos permite observar o fenómeno de composição do Estado moderno a partir de diferentes estratégias de sobrevivência ou sobre-vida.

La Sicilia nei primi decenni del Settecento è un cantiere aperto per via delle numerose
trasformazioni che interessano molti dei suoi centri urbani, distrutti o semplicemente danneggiati dal sisma che investì l’isola nel 1693. Le conseguenze di quella catastrofe si riassumono nella ricostruzione di intere città e nella riconfigurazione di chiese madri e
palazzi baronali. È interessante, con riferimento particolare agli ‘Stati’ feudali dei Gravina di Palagonia, la circolazione in tale contesto di maestranze specializzate di provenienza probabilmente maltese impegnate in opere di architettura civile e sacra come attestato nelle città di Palagonia e Delia.
