En prenant appui sur la pensée politique
et phénoménologique de Claude Lefort, cet article
cherche à se doter d’un cadre conceptuel descriptif
et normatif afin d’interpréter la manière selon laquelle
la démocratie, en raison de son indétermination
radicale et de sa non-substantialité, occasionne la
phénoménalisation d’un monde commun concrètement
humain à préserver, puisqu’il force à faire l’expérience
de la différence de l’autre. C’est sur la base de cette
interprétation du mouvement et des modalités invisibles
propres à la mise en forme de la réalité démocratique,
qu’il est possible de s’attacher au rôle que joue
l’argent en lien avec les appareils médiatiques, cette
nouvelle réalité technique propre à notre épreuve
communicationnelle du monde social. Notre hypothèse
est que l’argent peut se transformer en un mécanisme
anti-démocratique pour ceux et celles qui possèdent
le capital économique nécessaire pour s’approprier et
homogénéiser les discours offerts dans l’espace technicocommunicationnel de l’expérience démocratique.

En este artículo propongo interrogar la manera en la que Claude Lefort interpreta a Maquiavelo. En primer lugar, examinaré el estatuto que adquiere, para Lefort, el conflicto y la división social en la obra del Maquiavelo. En segundo lugar, desarrollaré la manera en la que este descubrimiento conduce a Maquiavelo, tal como es leído por Lefort, a elaborar una distinción entre diversas formas de organización política que rompe con la clasificación clásica de las formas de gobierno

The Exceptional State is an exercise in comparative politics. The course is intended to clarify the meaning and uniquely political form of (some) modern societies. To this end, we contrast two exceptional state forms, namely liberal-democratic and totatalitarian regimes; understood here, respectively, as societies in which the fallibilistic character of knowledge and the associated indeterminacy of the social is celebrated, and societies that treat the individual as always-already constituted, and which seek to occupy the ‘place of power’ (Lefort) in such a way that power law and knowledge becomes an effect of a master narrative.

Constructed largely through a critical engagement with Claude Lefort, the course presents a particular reading of the liberal-democratic state form in which the ‘place of power’ is said to be empty, and acknowledged openly as such, and in which the markers of certitude once derived from a master narrative or Truth (god, history, etc.) are displaced. Importantly, this reading locates the individual subject within a web of inherently subversive social relations, a ‘political form’ (Lefort) at odds with both the ancien régime and (to varying degrees) actually existing liberalism in modern capitalist societies. This makes possible a politics of open-ended discovery and socio-political contestation, which is contrasted with the type of ‘anti-political politics’ and state form that emerged in twentieth century totalitarian regimes.

This reading of the democratic revolution and its political possibilities is not taken as given, and students are expected to engage critically with it.

Eine Einleitung in Claude Leforts (1924–2010) politische Philosophie durch eine Einteilung in Denktraditionen und Theorieschulen ergibt wenig Sinn, bewegt er sich doch stets an den Grenzen dieser. Überzeugender erscheint es, Lefort einleitend nach seiner Auseinandersetzung mit historischen Momenten zu befragen, die seit seinen ersten Publikationen Gegenstand seiner Reflexion sind, und die er in einem permanenten Dialog und Zusammenhang miteinander denkt. Dabei fällt auf, dass eine einschneidende Ambiguität die Rezeption von Leforts Werk strukturiert: Es entsteht der Eindruck, als gäbe es „zwei Lefort“, einen „frühen“ marxistischen (1945 – ca. Anfang der 1960er) und einen „späteren“, nach der Abkehr vom Marxismus, die sich diametral gegenüber stehen. Mit dieser Einteilung geht ein stark divergierendes Interesse an Leforts Publikationen einher. So wird den marxistisch geprägten Artikeln aus Les Temps Modernes oder aus Socialisme ou Barbarie aktuell – vor allem in der deutschsprachigen Rezeption – kaum Beachtung geschenkt, während Theoreme aus seiner „post-marxistischen“ Zeit schon fast zu „Mottos“ verkommen. Die Kontinuitätslinien sowie Motive für seine Reflexionen bleiben dadurch jedoch wenig beachtet.
Im folgenden Beitrag wird die Originalität von Leforts Ansatz vornehmlich in der Analyse verschiedener Gesellschaftsformen als Resultat der Moderne verortet, die sich durch die Säkularisierung der Legitimationsgrundlagen politischer Herrschaft auszeichnet: Totalitarismus und Demokratie sind demnach zwei mögliche „Gesichter“ der demokratischen Revolution. Leforts Denken des Politischen und der Demokratie ist sowohl untrennbar von seiner Rekonstruktion der historischen Wurzeln, Entstehungsbedingungen und revolutionärer Momente als auch von den totalitären Erfahrungen des 20. Jahrhunderts geprägt. So dient ihm die Analyse des Totalita- rismus und der Monarchie u. a. als Vorlage, die er zur Rekonstruktion dessen, was die demokratische Spezifizität ausmacht, zeichnet. Dementsprechend wird zunächst seine Kritik an den Sozialwissenschaften skizziert, um sein Verständnis politischen Denkens einzuleiten. Darauf aufbauend, wird seine Analyse der Monarchie als divergierende Gesellschaftsform von der „demokratischen Erfindung“ abgegrenzt.

This article offers a framework for thinking about democratic representation beyond election. It argues, firstly, that modern democracy is a unique form of government made up of representative claims. To act on behalf of the people without electoral backup is therefore not foreign to modern democracy, but integral to its very operation. At the same time, not all claims to represent the people are necessarily democratic. In order to distinguish democratic from non-democratic representative claims, the article argues, secondly, that it is necessary to qualify what it means to act on behalf of the people, and that such qualification can be found in the principle of equality. The article concludes by exploring the significance of this framework for the crisis of electoral democracy.

The essay reconstructs Claude Lefort’s interpretation of Machiavelli’s work. The French
philosopher focuses on Machiavelli’s reading of Roman history, a strong critique of classical and Christian traditions, and identifies conflict as the defining feature of the social.
Following the blueprint of Maurice Merleau-Ponty’s seminal theses, Lefort considers
the Machiavellian «theory of humors» as a description of the fundamental division that
organizes society. In the context of this interpretation, he builds his theory of the symbolic role played by power.

Este artículo busca responder dos preguntas sobre la política que se encuentran entrelazadas: qué es la política y qué papel puede desempeñar el saber sobre la política en la lucha política cotidiana.
Con el objeto de construir un concepto de política no normativ anti-esencialista y afincado en una perspectiva simbólico-discursiva, se critica el concepto de política como administración, dominante en la teoría política occidental, para situarse en una concepción de la política como creación contingente radical. Desde esta perspectiva, representada por Castoriadis, Lefort, Bourdieu, Laclau, Mouffe y Rancière, se analizan las ventajas y límites de la distinción entre la política y lo político, a fin de despojarla de sus contenidos normativo, como el que identifica la política con ruptura,y para iluminar el vínculo ineliminable de la política con la violencia.
El concepto de política que se propone se expresa como primacía de lo político, entendida como supremacía de la frónesis, que abarca no sólo los medios, sino también los fines. Esto permitiría ver que la novedad también está presente en la reproducción del orden hegemónico.
En cuanto al segundo problema, se parte de que según se piense la política, así se entenderá la relación entre saber político y lucha política. Como la tradición occidental ha sido dominada por la idea de verdad, al saber político y a sus portadores (“intelectuales”) se les asignó un rol cuasi-sacerdotal. Frente a esta concepción, y coherentemente con el concepto de política que se propone,  se sugerirá que el fin del saber político es más construir conceptos y comprender el problema, que dictar cuáles son los fines verdaderos de la política.

Cet article propose une réflexion sur l'appropriation que tente Chantal Mouffe de la théorie de la démocratie de Claude Lefort en ce qui concerne le rapport entre le politique et le religieux. Pour Lefort, le politique doit être entendu comme la forme de la société, son institution symbolique ; la société, pour se représenter, doit en effet établir un rapport à un lieu autre qu'elle-même, à une autorité extérieure. C'est pourquoi, d'une certaine manière, le politique doit nécessairement être pensé dans sa relation au religieux, défini comme la nécessité pour la société de s'orienter par rapport à un dehors. C'est ce que Leo Strauss a nommé le « problème théologico-politique ». En ce sens, l'étude du politique est intrinsèquement liée à une conception du bien et du juste, aux conduites humaines qui leur correspondent ; cette étude révèle, en outre, la manière dont les hommes adhèrent à un régime qui se reproduit dans la durée. Si Mouffe semble suivre Lefort sur la définition du politique en démocratie comme institution symbolique conflictuelle, en revanche elle prend ses distances lorsqu'il est question du religieux. Celui-ci renvoie selon elle à des questions existentielles insolubles, que Mouffe considère comme faisant partie des conflits de type antagoniste, que l'on doit contenir au maximum. Qui plus est, influencée par Maurice Merleau-Ponty, la pensée de Lefort doit être comprise comme une phénoménologie politique dans laquelle « l'expérience du monde », « une interrogation…sur l'Être comme tel », se pense conjointement avec « l'expérience de la coexistence », la rencontre avec autrui. Cela signifie que nous nous instituons comme sujet, nous développons notre capacité autoréflexive, simultanément en nous confrontant à l'autre et en faisant l'expérience du monde sensible. Mouffe, pour sa part, ignore cette dernière expérience pour ne conserver que l'expérience relationnelle dans la compréhension de la formation du sujet. En somme, Mouffe définit le politique par l'institution de la société dans le conflit, en pensant régler le problème de l'universalisme par les luttes hégémoniques, et en réduisant l'expérience du sujet dans le monde aux relations interpersonnelles. De son côté Lefort pense le politique dans un rapport intrinsèque au religieux sous l'angle de l'unification de la société et il saisit l'expérience du monde sensible au-delà de l'intersubjectivité.

Every politics is an aesthetic. If necropolitics is the (accelerated) politics of what is usually referred to as the ‘apolitical age’, what are its manoeuvres, temporalities, intensities, textures, and tipping points? Bypassing revelatory and reconstructionist approaches – the tendency of which is to show that a particular site or practice is necropolitical by bringing its genealogy into evidence – this collection of essays by artist-philosophers and theorists-curators articulates the pre-perceptual working of necropolitics through a focus on the senses, assignments of energy, attitudes, cognitive processes, and discursive frameworks.

Recent histories of human rights have shown that the turn to human rights as a form of politics occurred as a placeholder for utopian energies at the end of history, coinciding with a retreat of the organised left, the abandonment of the theme of revolution, and the pluralisation of political struggles. This essay examines the way that radical continental theory has responded to the political hegemony of human rights by focusing on ‘post-Marxist’ thought. Examining the work of four influential critics of human rights – Claude Lefort, Alain Badiou, Giorgio Agamben, and Jacques Rancière – I argue that post-Marxist thought offers two very different approaches to the political possibilities offered by human rights. The first retains a fidelity to the anti-nomian spirit of the revolutionary tradition and rejects the language and conceptuality of rights as being too deeply implicated in the liberal political order that needs to be resisted. The second acknowledges the limitations of human rights while arguing that they also offer important tools for democratic political struggle. The essay draws upon these analyses to consider the contemporary political meaning of human rights. It argues that the latter of these strategies is problematic because we now face a radically different political conjuncture to the one in which the politics of human rights first emerged: human rights have played an important role in the project of post-historical reaction; the political space in which the politics of rights once made sense has collapsed; and we have seen a return of revolution in the wake of the crisis of capitalism.

Which forms of contestation are beneficial for democracies, and which are not? This essay responds to this question by looking at writings on political contestation during 1968 by the French political theorist Claude Lefort. Although Lefort is now seen as a major theorist of democracy, I show that in 1968 he made almost no reference to democracy. Only from the 1970s onwards he developed an elaborate theory of democracy which allowed him to better explain the role that democracy and its symbolic principles may play in fostering contestation and also changed what Lefort saw as proper forms of contestation. While in 1968 he had been enthusiastic about self-management and was critical of traditional structures, in the 1970s almost the reverse was true. This essay ends with a brief comparison with Gauchet, which shows that Lefort, unlike Gauchet, continued to believe that democracies need contestation to flourish. In spite of all the changes in his theory post-1968, Lefort thus held on to 1968’s spirit of contestation.

This paper attempts to draw out the political import of Merleau-Ponty’s ontology of the flesh, by engaging the critique levelled against it by his student and literary executor Claude Lefort. In suggesting a tension in Merleau-Ponty’s work that obscures alterity, Lefort seems to miss the rich political import of Merleau-Ponty’s ontology of the flesh. Founded in his development of the concepts of écart and reversibility, Merleau-Ponty’s ontological position breaks with many of the standard tenets of political thinking, and offers a multifaceted conception of alterity. I will suggest that Lefort’s own claim to alterity buckles under the immanent weight of his critique of Merleau-Ponty, offering at best a conception of otherness limited to a self-relational non-identity. This conception ultimately fails to adequately consider the relations existing between different beings-in-the-world. In thinking being as flesh, Merleau-Ponty offers us an ethico-political optic that attempts to think alterity and ontology in a manner that unhinges us from our closed and autonomous being, opening us to the world, others and to the non-identical becoming that characterizes being as such.

Comment élaborer un constitutionnalisme dans une perspective néo-machiavélienne de la manière la plus adéquate possible ? Quelle figure pourrait bien prendre un constitutionnalisme associé à l’exercice du conflictuel en politique, et à sa double dimension institutionnelle et extra-institutionnelle ? La constitution mixte, chez Machiavel, n’est pas un modèle d’équilibre politique où l’équilibre serait premier, mais d’équilibre précaire obtenu sur fond de déséquilibre perpétuel engendré par la désunion entre le Sénat et le peuple. N’est-ce pas alors une gageure que d’adopter une telle conception de la Constitution ? La tension conflictuelle entre l’idéologie et l’utopie, que nous reprenons de Ricoeur, inviterait-elle à adopter un constitutionnalisme singulier ? Et que pourrait-il être ?

In this paper, I discuss contemporary readings of Machiavelli (styled ‘radical’) that perceive in his work the foundations for what they conceive as a political ontology — an ontology based on force, potency and conflictuality. I contest this interpretation, both for philological and theoretical reasons. Through readings of Foucault, Deleuze, Esposito, Negri and Abensour (among others), I interrogate the notion of Machiavelli’s ‘realism’, and challenge the traditional articulation between ‘force’ and ‘reality’ with reference to Derrida's writings on force, potency and virtuality. This essay takes aim not only at the fashionable notion of ‘political ontology’, but also at the use that is made of it in allegedly progressive circles within disciplines such as political science and International Relations.

Desde “Hegemonía y estrategia socialista”, Ernesto Laclau nutre su trabajo teórico con el análisis efectuado por Claude Lefort sobre el advenimiento democrático en la Modernidad. Sin embargo, a lo largo de su obra y especialmente en “La razón populista”, confronta directamente con el autor francés, produciendo fricciones en temas centrales para ambas obras, como el rol de lo simbólico, el lugar del poder y las condiciones mismas de posibilidad de la democracia. El presente trabajo contiene dos objetivos. En primer lugar, se intentará mostrar que la lectura de Laclau sobre Lefort no es del todo precisa en su última obra, generando tensiones especialmente en la conceptualización que de la experiencia democrática hacen ambos autores. En segundo lugar, se indagará en la caracterización laclauviana del Populismo, para comprender cómo la introducción de la cuestión de los “grados de encarnación” del pueblo genera una indistinción entre populismo y democracia que ha sido poco estudiada hasta el momento en la literatura especializada, y que constituye –a nuestro juicio- uno de los problemas centrales de “La razón populista”.
