The article shows the reading of Gramsci offered by Portantiero, a reading that not only enhances aspects of Gramsci's work on which later critics will dwell extensively, but also connects them, subterraneously, without making it explicit, with the theory of differential temporality, the theoretical heart of Reading Capital. This extraordinary theoretical operation, carried out from Mexican exile during the dictatorship, makes it possible to read not only a "new" Gramsci, but also a "new" Althusser, when not even the treasures hidden in his archive were yet suspected. Beyond Gramsci's historicism and Althusser's structuralism, Portantiero leads us down a path where the dialogue between the two theorists becomes extremely fruitful: the theory of the conjuncture and the concepts necessary to develop its analysis.

Spinozism has traditionally been interpreted as a theory of the unicity of space and time. However, this reading seems to be contradicted by some of Spinoza's texts. It is therefore necessary to trace its genealogy. The paper suggests to attribute its genesis to Jacobi's reading of Spinoza. Starting from some intuitions formulated by Herder, Jacobi attributes to Spinoza a doctrine of unique duration, which allows him to consider that the Kantian concepts of time and space are "entirely in the spirit of Spinoza". However, in Spinoza the apparent linearity of time is the result of a deeper complexity of interchange and intertwined levels that constitute the ordo et connexio rerum.

The article takes into consideration the notes of the Capital in which Lucretius and Darwin are quoted. The author, carefully reconstructing the theoretical context in which the Latin poet and the English naturalist are mentioned, proposes an interpretation, which goes from the certain to the conjectural, of the Marxian strategy that commands these notes.

With the Letters to Moses Mendelssohn on the doctrine of
Spinoza Jacobi puts in place an intervention of great importance in
the theoretical-political conjuncture of the Aufklärung: it lets enter the
scene the Spinoza’s Gost by projecting it on Leibniz, Lessing, and Kant.
In particular, he will accuse Kant of having proposed, in the Critique of
Pure Reason, a theory of space and time in the “Geist des Spinoza”.
In this article I reconstruct the reasons that have allowed Jacobi to
conduct this operation by putting it in tension with the criticisms of the
“transcendental aesthetics” that we find in Herder’s Metacritica, where
a theory of plural temporality inspired by Spinoza is explicitly affirmed
against Kant.

The essay “Ideology and Ideological State Apparatuses” (ISAs) contains a famous statement about ideology in relation to the psychoanalytic problematic: namely, that “ideology is eternal, exactly like the unconscious.” However, Althusser does not offer any further clarification on this parallelism. Further, in a letter from the late 1970s, he states that he has “stopped short … before the question … about the ‘relations’ between ideology (or concrete ideological formations) and the unconscious.” But in a text that precedes the ISA essay, “Three Notes on the Theory of Discourses,” published posthumously, Althusser tried to develop exactly a theory of the articulation of the ideological and of the unconscious, using a new set of concepts. In this text he combined systematically and for the first time what, borrowing a term from Balibar, could be called an “ontology of relations,” with the categories of the “encounter” and “taking hold.”.

In this essay I consider the fundamental features of Althusser’s reading of Machiavelli in its historical development, starting from the 1962 lecture course, passing through the 1972–76 course published with the title of Machiavel et nous as well as the writings of 1977–78, concluding with the group of writings written during the 1980s. I show that any teleological reading that sees in the final writings the truth finally revealed of the path of Althusser’s reading of Machiavelli (or its inversion, that is, the path itself as a corruption of an original truth) should be rejected, and instead present the thesis that Althusser, through the figure of Machiavelli, theoretically reworks his relationship with the Party.

The chapter will consider the continuity of Althusser’s
thought and revise my previous interpretation backdating aleatory materialism
to the sixties. I will analyse the context in which the concept
of ‘encounter’ emerged in the sixties and show in a second moment
that it is possible to identify this concept in the texts of the eighties,
but only in one of the two tendencies which traverses this group of
texts, the one I would call a materialist tendency. This tendency is
intertwined with another tendency, an eschatological one — which
