DOCTORAL STUDENT

This book shares the thoughts of mostly North American scholars on many interrelated topics that have not previously been linked in academic research. The focus of the book is the belief that the Ed.D. can prepare highly competent justice-oriented scholars who will be engaged with communities. Among these future leaders, the contributors envision educators who not only lead public schools, but also private foundations, not-for-profit organizations, and community centers. An outstanding feature of this volume is that each chapter highlights existing and emerging issues such as, but not limited to, candidate recruitment and admission policies; program funding, fees, and student expenses; academic support services; faculty recruitment, compensation, evaluation, and promotion models; on-site/on-line instruction, internship policy, opportunities for graduate student employment, publishing, and conference engagement; student supervision protocols; and dissertation and capstone project parameters. In addition, the book explores cultural and socio-political contexts, public/private sector relationships, and the kinds of legislation that frame Ed.D. theory, policy, and practice from a social justice perspective.

When Louis Pasteur remarked that chance favours the prepared mind, he was commenting on the important role played by serendipity in scientific discovery. That role is well known (most know of the story of Fleming’s accidental discovery of penicillin) but much of the literature focuses on the STEM disciplines, on ‘big’ science, and concentrates on the work of established scientists. There is virtually no discussion of the role of serendipity in the doctoral research arena, an arena which contributes significantly to contemporary scientific endeavour and the associated publications. This article reports the initial results from a survey of doctoral students and PhD graduates which explores how serendipity contributes to the PhD process and also the forms serendipity takes in this arena. Following the conceptual differentiation of serendipity from accident or chance, the article explores the intersection of serendipity with doctoral research. Most respondents reported serendipitous occurrences happening in the doctoral experience, with the most important involving them stumbling across unexpected and unsearched-for literature, meeting others who proved to be significant for both their research and also their future development and careers, and finding project-related artefacts which expanded their projects and thinking. There were also reports of second-hand serendipity a hitherto uncommented on phenomenon. Many of the serendipitous occurrences involved a social context and actors other than the doctoral student, placing a focus on the researcher as someone with the ability and opportunities to make connections rather than simply relying on luck.

Academia is a stressful environment for students and professors alike. While pursuing a degree, students often experience emotional and psychological distress, which may affect their ability to balance their personal, financial, and professional lives. Similarly, faculty in higher education also experience undesired feelings and emotions such as burnout, stress, fear, insecurity, anxiety, depression, and burnout, connected to their job. This collection weaves together the personal narratives of a group of diverse scholars in academia in order to reflect on the ways that grief and hope matter for those situated within higher education. Each chapter explores a unique aspect of grief and loss, from experiencing a personal tragedy such as the loss of a loved one, to national and international grief such as campus shootings and refugee camp experiences, to experiencing racism and microaggressions as a woman of color in academia, to the implications of religious differences severing personal ties as an individual navigates research and academic studies. Unlike most resources examining grief, this collection pushes beyond notions of sorrow as solely individual, and instead situates moments of loss and hurt as ones that matter politically, academically, professionally, and personally. The editors and their authors offer pathways forward to academics, researchers, teachers, pedagogues, and thinkers who grapple with grief in a variety of forms, transforming this book into a critical resource of hope to those in the field of education (and others) who may feel the effects of an otherwise solitary journey of grief, to create an awareness of solidarity and support that some may not realize exists within academic circles.

Motherscholar, a term coined by Cheryl Matias (2011) incites the coalescence of identities, of being both a mother and a scholar. In particular, she found that in academia there are often forces that push the two parts of us apart, encouraging separate identities, and instead we can push back. In this research, I sought to understand the transition from doctoral student mother to a future career, the transition from what I refer to as “docmama” (CohenMiller, 2013) to “motherscholar.” The study seeks to examine experiences as a part of understanding why women/mother-scholars (Lapayese, 2012) are falling through the cracks in the academic pipeline despite an increase in enrollment and employment. It is a multisited study, utilizing Facebook as an online focus group. The use of technology provides a way in which to broach the countries in which they (and I) live/work: United States, Central Asia, and Oceania. Unique to this work is the longitudinal nature of examining academic motherhood and an integration of arts-based methods (Leavy, 2015), participatory/collaborative approach to address a new perspective on addressing equity in academia.

International Doctoral Student Conference on Archaeology is an international conference series, established by the Archaeological Institute of the Department of Archaeology, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Zagreb in 2015 (http://idsca.ffzg.hr/), with the aim of bringing together PhD students to share their current individual research.
The conference intends to promote an exchange of ideas belonging to various archaeological disciplines (Prehistoric, Classical, Roman Provincial, Late Antique, Medieval and Postmedieval Archaeology, Archaeometry and Methodology), as well as archaeology-related sciences.
The aim of this conference is to build new bridges between young archaeologists and to encourage them to present their work, exchange ideas and meet colleagues working in the related fields.
The conference will be held on 25-27 April 2018 at the conference hall of the Library of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Zagreb, Ivana Lucica 3, 10 000 Zagreb, Croatia.

A key aspect of the effective supervision of PhD research is the supervisor-student relationship. This interaction is affected by the characteristics and needs of students and institutional conditions, as well as the skills, attitudes, and roles of supervisors and their supervisory styles. When supervision is carried out at a distance, it entails an additional challenge, mainly concerning interaction. The purpose of this study is to improve the research process, supervision, and design of virtual environments in order to support this supervision. The study identifies the supervisory relationships that affect doctoral research conducted at a distance from the student’s academic institution. It also describes how students and their supervisors perceived the characteristics of supervision and the skills and attitudes students perceived in and expected from their supervisors. Despite the growing number of studies exploring PhD students’ experiences and their social relationships with other researchers, there is a lack of research on the interaction between the type of experiences and the social agents involved, especially in relation to not only problems and challenges, but also to positive emotions and experiences. In this study, we addressed this gap exploring the relationship between four ecology doctoral students’ most significant experiences and their perceived position in the research community. Additionally, we aimed at exploring the utility of a methodological device with two instruments, Journey Plot and Community Plot. Results showed, in one hand, that both positive and negative experiences were significant in students’ trajectories, but the proportion varied greatly across participants. Supervisors were related to negative experiences, whereas the broader community was mostly source of positive experiences. Research writing and communication experiences were significant in relation to all the social agents, while other contents of experience were restricted to the smallest social layers (e.g. research motives were confined to the individual layer, and research organization to the individual and supervisor layers). Relationships between the type of experiences and participants’ position in the community were found and implications for doctoral education discussed.

The purpose of this study was to examine university presidents’ perceptions of their academic doctoral preparation program as it related to their preparation for the university presidency. Using a mixed methods approach, thirteen presidents shared what knowledge and competencies they perceived as having learned while in their doctoral program. The areas of knowledge they believed they developed were foundational knowledge, knowledge acquisition of context, and complex cognitive knowledge. The four competencies areas they believed they refined in their pro-grams were interpersonal development, personal attributes, management, and communications. They identified fund-raising as an area they were not well prepared for. The results of this study should help administrators, curriculum developers, and faculty in higher education administration programs to better understand higher education students’ needs and enhance their programs. In addition, it should provide information about whether and how professional development, mentoring, and coaching activities within these programs help in preparing individuals for executive leadership and ensuring their success.

This article provides a description and analysis of the way in which research degree students and their supervisors at one Australian university (the University of South Australia) use a popular online plagiarism-detection system, iThenticate. The study identifies how these two groups use iThenticate by analysing usage data together with data from an anonymous online survey conducted 12 months after the university took out a pilot subscription to the system. One hundred and nineteen students and 26 supervisors responded to the survey, representing 61% and 43% of the active users in each category. What do we, as women, give up? What does it mean to give up as a woman in academia? We explored this question through a study with women doctoral students to reframe giving up as a purposeful, willful act. Sara Ahmed describes willfulness in relation to women who are perceived as resisting norms, shifting away from normative expectations, refusing what is expected. In this work, we push against the prevailing discourses of women in academia as passively encountering problems, facing issues, and making sacrifices. We explore what it means to give up through three women’s archives and objects of willfulness. Willfulness becomes a generative, sweaty concept through which we interrogate and understand practices of giving up by women doctoral students.

Mental Health (MH) in Higher Education (HE), more specifically among those seeking terminal degrees, is critical, as recent research documents doctoral students are six times more likely to experience higher rates of anxiety, depression, and other psychiatric disorders than the general population (Barry, Woods, Warnecke, Stirling, & Martin, 2018). Moreover, doctoral students appear at high risk of developing serious mental health issues, according to a recent National Science Foundation (NSF) Rapid Response Research (RAPID) grant used to evaluate graduate students during COVID-19. 67% of doctoral students scored low on well-being factors out of 3500 respondents (Olgivie et al., 2021). Research with this population is as diverse as the graduate student body itself, in terms of age, ethnicity, race, gender, and life circumstances. Another challenge is precipitated by the type of research, academic and career goals, and professional and academic cultures in which they study (Council of Graduate Schools & the JED Foundation, 2021). Reasons for increased anxiety vary as much as the diversity of the graduate student body itself. Some dominant stressors include: pressure to publish, difficult relationships with advisors, financial insecurity, competitive job markets, work-life balance, lack of transparency about the university graduate student culture and experience (Mackie ad Bates, 2019). Quantitative research methods are important for understanding the bigger picture, but individual stories reveal more about the experience of being a doctoral student. Autoethnography as a qualitative research method can contribute to our understanding of the mental health issues doctoral students experience. This style of autobiographical writing and qualitative research explores and reveals an individual's unique life experiences in relationship to social and cultural institutions (Custer, 2014). Autoethnography is about a way of being in the world, living consciously, and seeking a "story that is hopeful, where authors ultimately write themselves as survivors of story they are living (Jones, 2013, p. 10)." This paper combines both the quantitative and autoethnographic perspectives that add a layer of depth and richness to data originally perceived to be flat and sparse with just statistical analysis alone.

Service-oriented computing is a popular design methodology for large scale business computing systems. Grid computing enables the sharing of distributed computing and data resources such as processing, networking and storage capacity to create a cohesive resource environment for executing distributed applications in service-oriented computing. Grid computing represents more business-oriented orchestration of pretty homogeneous and powerful distributed computing resources to optimize the execution of time consuming process as well. French PhD students share their experience in designing an international workshop on academic presentations. The seminar was devised as part of an International Summer School organized by an Education University in Asia and was aimed at doctoral students from various countries. By positioning themselves as multidisciplinary co-authors, French doctoral students demonstrate that an open research posture (bottom-up type) is more appropriate and more easily shared than a frontal training posture (top-down type). This article suggests that multicultural exchanges can provide future perspectives for considering PhD students in terms of international mobility as well as inter- and transcultural meetings of Early Career Researchers (ECRs).

Resumen: Decidir estudiar un doctorado es una determinación que toman los interesados basándose no sólo en la razón sino también en la emoción, y, por lo regular, sin considerar las posibles consecuencias de su decisión. El deseo de trabajar al lado de famosos, disfrutar el ambiente universitario, ser intelectualmente desafiados, obtener un puesto en la academia, son algunas de las ilusiones que les llaman al doctorado. Sin embargo, el choque cultural, pánico, hostigamiento, discriminación, soledad, depresión, ansiedad, frustración, responsabilidad, desamparo, rivalidad, tendencias suicidas, entre otras cuestiones, representan los estados mentales que viven estudiantes de doctorado. Se presentan algunos datos generados por los 6,300 estudiantes encuestados por la revista Nature en referencia al doctorado. En el contexto del COVID-19, la decisión de trasladarse a otro país y aprestarse a vivir el doctorado bajo condiciones impredecibles, quizá haga los estudios doctorales todavía más pesados de lo usual.

Academic capitalism, which has become part of the higher education ideology, emphasizes scientific activity as a means of generating profits at the expense of pedagogical activity. The article is a philosophical reflection of this issue, especially in the humanities. The author reflect son the philosophical characteristic of the personality of a young scientist as a pedagogue, who, besides the scientometric requirements, should also fulfill the more elementary social role, namely to educate and inspire students of humanities as members of the humanist society of liberal democracy.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine the racial and ethnic aspects of the doctoral socialization to provide a meaningful insight into the belief systems and decision-making processes related to academic success and degree completion. Although it is widely accepted that doctoral students face extreme pressure and exhaustion and that their mental well-being is more likely to be at risk than compared to undergraduate or graduate students-studies on the mental health status of doctoral students are severely lacking. The aims of this study were to assess the incidence of anxiety and depression amongst doctoral students in Bangkok, Thailand, and to explore the relationship between anxiety, depression, and possible associated factors. A cross-sectional study was conducted amongst 160 doctoral students in Bangkok, Thailand. The Depression Anxiety Stress Scale 21 was used to assess anxiety and depression. Information was also collected on socio-demographic factors and doctoral characteristics of doctoral students. The Research Self-Efficacy Scale was utilized to measure doctoral student's perceived ability in performing research tasks and activities. The Advisory Working Alliance Inventory-Student version was utilized to assess advisor-advisee relationships. To determine if any factors were significantly associated with anxiety and depression, the chi-square test of independence for categorical variables, Spearman ρ correlation for continuous variables, and hierarchical linear regression analyses were performed. Approximately 21.9% of doctoral students showed signs of moderate anxiety and around 28.7% of doctoral students showed signs of severe-to-extremely severe anxiety. Similarly, approximately 23.8% of doctoral students showed signs of moderate depression, and around 16.3% of doctoral students showed signs of severe-to-extremely severe depression. The highest scholarly output and perceived capability in maintaining school-work-life balance were significantly associated with depression. Furthermore, the age of the doctoral students, research self-efficacy and advisory working alliance had negative relationships with anxiety and depression. This study's findings reveal that anxiety and depression are prevalent amongst doctoral students in Bangkok, and calls for institutions to pay closer attention to the mental health and well-being of doctoral students. Strategies and interventions that promote research self-efficacy and advisory working alliance could be helpful in reducing and preventing anxiety and depression.

This paper adopts a political economy perspective in understanding how the country context frames the development of higher education doctoral science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) programs. We argue that a country's commitment to research and development spending as a strategy to maintain its economic competitiveness creates the market for research labor. This embeddedness of STEM doctoral training programs in the country's science and technology system enlarges differences between STEM and non-STEM doctoral programs. This argument is validated from a survey of doctoral students in leading Pacific Asian universities which shows that STEM doctoral programs have stronger research networks, are better financed, use better facilities, and incorporate a variety of research placements. The embeddedness of STEM programs is further illustrated from the case of Singapore. Singapore-based STEM doctoral students mention enjoying better financial support and receiving better career advice from their supervisors. They depend on collaborative peer learning and cite more varied employment options when asked about their career plans.

Abstract: Doctoral Education Studies, particularly in its North American manifestations, emphasizes quantitative methods. The resulting research is empirical and occasionally empiricist. The challenges revealed through this mode of research is that the highly ideological, volatile environment of higher education is flattened, framed and justified. My research offers an alternative view and perspective of doctoral education through a post-empirical, theoretical article. Within my piece, the PhD and doctoral supervision are framed by the post-Global Financial Crisis to understand the very specific – and volatile – context for research and research training.
