A partire dalle vicende del Commento storico di Piero Treves al secondo libro delle Storie di Polibio, si tenta di ricostruire il senso dell'attività scientifica di Treves prima dell'esilio, analizzata nella rete di rapporti culturali, umani e politici in cui si colloca.

This is a very curious article to include in the library of Ara Pacis scholarship. During and immediately after WW I the notion spread to reunite the Ara Pacis in a museum on the Campodoglio as a symbol of the Italian victory in the Great War over Austria and Germany-think Arminius/Hermann-as if it should celebrate a pan-Italian monument. There was some thought of calling it the Ara Pacis Italiae instead of the Ara Pacis Augustae. Various archeological societies and government officials were recruited and correspondences launched to enlist the support of the king and prime ministers to push this project forth. Politicans sent letters of support, but the project did not execute. Despite the noble goals of the 1919 movement, the plan stalled until Mussolini used the 2000 th anniversary of Augustus' birth (1937) as a pretext to make it happen. Il ruolo dell’antichità nel primo dopoguerra Italiano è tutto da riscrivere. In bilico tra una tradizione ermeneutica di stampo conservatore, se non apertamente reazionario, ed un elitismo aristocratico, che aveva alimentato una percezione di tali studi in un ruolo di altezzosa alterità, l’archeologia classica, e più ampiamente gli studi antichistici, si trovano negli anni ‘50 coinvolti in un acceso dibattito: come divulgare, interpretare e trasmettere le fonti in un momento di democratizzazione politica? 
L’analisi del rapporto consulenziale tra archeologi comunisti, quali Ranuccio Bianchi Bandinelli e le case editrici di maggior peso politico e culturale, quali Einaudi, apre ad una possibile interpretazione riguardo i meccanismi di risemantizzazione e trasmissione di tali studi. 
Partendo da fonti d’archivio, quali la corrispondenza tra Giulio Einaudi e R. Bianchi Bandinelli, presente nell’ Archivio di Stato di Torino (Archivio Giulio Einaudi editore, serie Corrispondenza, sottoserie Corrispondenza con autori e collaboratori italiani), è possibile indagare i meccanismi editoriali retrostanti la pubblicazione critica e consapevole di libri d’ archeologia considerati come importanti in un’ottica propagativa di nuovi modelli culturali. In questo senso, paradigmatica è la pubblicazione di Kulturgeschichte Afrikas (Storia della Civiltà Africana), di L. Frobenius e di Götter, Gräber und Gelehrte, di C.W. Ceram, entrambi introdotti da R. Bianchi Bandinelli.

The “Fiume exploit” led by Gabriele D’Annunzio (September 1919 - January 1921) was transformed into a founding myth by the Fascist regime and remains to this day a celebrated episode for the Italian right. However, from the 1950s to the present day, a historiographical interpretation prevails which rather tends to isolate the event from what happened afterwards and to separate the political experience of the legionnaires from that of the fascists. This interpretation is based on the narrative created by the Legionary Federation, which after the fall of fascism attempted to demonstrate the distance between D’Annunzio’s figure and the totalitarian regime. This article proposes an alternative re- construction in which Fiuman legionarism emerges as a powerful expression of the para-military, anti-socialist and corporatist culture that nourished the post-war European right, and in which D’Annunzio played a key role that contributed to the rise of Mussolini.

This paper examines the architecture and planning of the Mostra d'Oltremare in Naples—a national display of colonial expansion that opened in May 1940—and the Esposizione Universale di Roma—an "Olympics of Civilization" that was proposed for 1942. These two major exhibitions will be studied in relation to Italy's violent and racially motivated Imperial politics. In the first case, it will closely examine the "Villaggi indigeni" (Indigenous village) of Italian East Africa, a scientific re-enactment of native constructions that became a space of violence and political confinement. In the second, it will study the "Villaggio operaio" (Workers' village), which, just like the larger exhibition grounds, was transformed into a site of military conflict during the war period.

This work appraises the political philosophy of Karl Raymond Popper, particularly his notion of democracy. Democracy today has been given to various interpretations. Totalitarian tenets has been often disguised as democratic through the infusion of a few democratic principles. Thus, Popper's notion of democracy vis-à-vis his political philosophy is an invitation to rethinking the tenets which makes for a proper practice of democracy; not in an ideal sense as accentuated by Plato, Hegel and Marx, however, by pulling away and questioning undemocratic tenets which has overtime filtered into the practice of democracy. This paper uses the philosophical method of critical analysis. It argues that rethinking the tenets of democracy in third world countries and African states in particular would lead to the development of the continent and reposition Africa in the global economic community.

The paper examines two books about Italian theater during fascism. The first book, written by Pietro Cavallo, analyses some scripts of the theatrical censorship Collection at the Central Archives of the State in Rome; the second book, written by Ilona Fried, talks about the Convention on the dramatic theater, held in Rome in October 1934, in the light of unpublished documents.

Studiando la nascita e lo sviluppo delle prime forme di organizzazione della classe lavoratrice nelle zone interne della Sicilia, la prima cosa di cui ci si accorge è l’estrema necessità espressa dalle masse rurali di voler rompere definitivamente con quei vecchi sistemi angarici che contraddistinguevano i rapporti sociali nelle campagne dell’isola. Non si trattò, chiaro, di un processo rapido ed efficace, quanto invece di un lungo e faticoso cammino, oggetto di repentine repressioni, che non limitarono comunque la grande fame dei lavoratori della terra, fame di diritti e di giustizia sociale.
In questo cammino le donne furono protagoniste quanto gli uomini; in prima fila negli scioperi e nelle proteste messe in atto alla fine dell’Ottocento, esse organizzarono fasci femminili dove ci si confrontava su quelle idee progressiste di giustizia sociale, senza mai rinnegare la figura sacra di Gesù Cristo, tanto cara ai contadini:
Gesù era un vero socialista e voleva appunto quello che chiedono i Fasci, ma i preti non lo rappresentano bene, specialmente quando fanno gli usurai. Alla fondazione del Fascio i nostri preti erano contrari e al confessionale ci dicevano che i socialisti sono scomunicati. Ma noi abbiamo risposto che sbagliavano, e in giugno, per protestare contro la guerra ch’essi facevano al Fascio, nessuno di noi andò alla processione del Corpus Domini. Era la prima volta che avveniva un fatto simile.

Nelle parole appassionate della contadina di Piana dei Greci ritroviamo l’influenza dei Fasci siciliani dei lavoratori sulla gente rurale della Sicilia di fine Ottocento.
Vedremo come a Milocca nell’ottobre del 1893, le donne si schierarono in prima linea per difendere l’operato del Fascio contro la repressione.  Tale vicenda dimostrò infatti non solo la numerosa adesione delle donne al movimento politico - sindacale siciliano, ma la consapevolezza da parte loro di essere una forza sociale attiva e determinante.

Fascist Exhibitions and Propaganda Abroad: From the Years of Consensus to the Totalitarian State (1929-1940).

The growing fortune of studies on fascist culture, and especially on the relations between the regime and the arts, has so far neglected – if not exceptionally, for individual case studies – the organization of exhibitions abroad as a privileged focus of analysis on the consensus-building mechanisms and on the strategies to consolidate the international image of fascist Italy in the 1930s. From the end of the 1920s fascist exhibitions became powerful ideological and propagandistic tools, the "demonstration," as Margherita Sarfatti said of the tenth anniversary show of the fascist revolution (Rome 1932), of the political, economic and cultural choices made by the regime. In fact, throughout the 1930s, the exhibition medium constitutes one of the highest levels of self-representation of fascism, within the generalized process of "aestheticization" of political life, which is the first result of totalitarian and mass society.

The exhibition landscape of the 1930s is very broad and still largely unexplored, mainly due to the ephemeral nature of the various events and the plurality of personalities and institutions directly involved in organizing these events on a small, medium and large scale. The conference we propose to organize intends to fill at least in part this gap in studies, focusing, for the occasion, on some key exhibitions of Italian modern art staged abroad, to be reconsidered from the privileged point of view of the strategies of communication and propaganda, cultural diplomacy and foreign policy directions of the regime. The aim is to interrogate and discuss the canon of Italian modernism within international culture and reconsider political and military alliances for the benefit of the most diverse national interests – military, commercial, colonial – through the filter of cultural promotion. The chronology indicated follows the slant proposed by Renzo De Felice in his history of fascism through the biography of the duce, in years of great commitment, as for Mussolini, on the front of international recognition of his leadership and the primacy of Italian culture in the world.

The conference is organized by the Scuola di Specializzazione in Beni Storico Artistici of the Università degli Studi di Siena and the Scuola di Specializzazione in Beni Storico Artistici of the Università degli Studi di Milano La Statale.

Twenty-minute presentations are welcome on exhibitions of modern Italian art (painting, sculpture, graphics, architecture, decorative arts, photography, publishing...) set up abroad under the aegis of Fascism: from major universal exhibitions to smaller initiatives in private galleries or cultural circles, with regard to the promoters/organizers, artists, institutions involved and their repercussions in the coeval transnational critical debate.

Please submit an abstract of 500 words, along with a brief CV, to davide.lacagnina@unisi.it, by April 16, 2023. Notification of acceptance of proposals: April 23, 2023.

Esposizioni e propaganda fascista all’estero: dagli anni del consenso allo Stato totalitario (1929-1940)

La crescente fortuna di studi sulla cultura fascista, e in modo particolare sui rapporti fra il regime e le arti, ha fin qui trascurato – se non eccezionalmente, per singoli casi di studio – l’organizzazione delle mostre all’estero quale focus privilegiato d’analisi dei meccanismi di costruzione del consenso e delle strategie messe in opera per la proiezione e il consolidamento dell’immagine dell’Italia fascista negli anni Trenta a livello internazionale. Dalla fine degli anni Venti infatti le esposizioni fasciste si convertono in efficaci strumenti ideologici e propagandistici, inappellabile “dimostrazione”, come disse Margherita Sarfatti in relazione alla celebre mostra del decennale della Rivoluzione fascista (Roma 1932), delle scelte politiche, economiche e culturali operate dal regime. Di fatto, per tutti gli anni Trenta, il medium espositivo costituisce uno dei livelli più alti di autorappresentazione del fascismo, all’interno del processo generalizzato di “estetizzazione” della vita politica, che è il primo risultato della società totalitaria e di massa.

Il panorama espositivo degli anni Trenta è assai ampio e ancora in larga gran parte inesplorato, principalmente a causa del carattere effimero delle varie manifestazioni e della pluralità di personalità e istituzioni direttamente coinvolte nell’organizzazione di questi eventi su scala piccola, media e grande. Il convegno che ci si propone di organizzare intende colmare almeno in parte questa lacuna negli studi, concentrandosi, per l’occasione, su alcune esposizioni d’arte moderna italiana allestite all’estero, da riconsiderare dal punto di vista privilegiato delle strategie della comunicazione e della propaganda, della diplomazia culturale e degli indirizzi di politica estera del regime. L’obiettivo è quello di interrogare e discutere il canone del modernismo italiano nel confronto con la cultura internazionale e riconsiderare alleanze politiche e militari a vantaggio dei più diversi interessi nazionali – militari, commerciali, coloniali – attraverso il filtro della promozione culturale. La cronologia indicata ricalca il taglio proposto da Renzo De Felice nella sua storia del fascismo attraverso la biografia del duce, in anni di grande impegno, per Mussolini, sul fronte del riconoscimento internazionale della sua leadership e del primato della cultura italiana nel mondo.

Il convegno è organizzato dalla Scuola di Specializzazione in Beni Storico Artistici della Università degli Studi di Siena e dalla Scuola di Specializzazione in Beni Storico Artistici della Università degli Studi di Milano La Statale.

Proposte di approfondimento di venti minuti sono benvenute su mostre di arte moderna italiana (pittura, scultura, grafica, architettura, arti decorative, fotografia, editoria…) allestite all’estero sotto l’egida del fascismo: dalle grandi esposizioni universali alle più piccole iniziative in gallerie private o circoli culturali, con particolare riguardo ai promotori/organizzatori, agli artisti, alle istituzioni coinvolte e alle loro ricadute sul coevo dibattito critico transnazionale.

ABSTRACT:
1920s social housing offers an extraordinary overview of the debate on modern Italian residential archi-tecture, characterized by different cultural addresses and spatial solutions. Some of the most important architects took part into the discussion. As designers of the public housing institute for Rome or as occa-sional consultants, they demonstrated their skills, verifying the potential of baroque tradition and the in-cipient Roman archaeological fashion.

The labour system of every society is crucial to its effective running. This is implied in Plato's theory of social justice, even though he does not engage in a formal discussion of labour in any of his works. Yet, attempts by scholars to explore the characteristics of labour in Plato have been limited to his economic ideas, with a concentration on the division of labour and specialization. In this paper, I argue that Plato's thoughts on labour go beyond just the principle of division of labour and specialization to employ philosophical, ethical, and psychological ideas in putting forward a labour system that keeps the polis functioning effectively, and that the socio-economic and political roles and implications of labour in Plato's thought can only be understood by considering his holistic ideas. The study explores how liberation from ghetto life in an urban prison and emancipation influenced image-construction and photographic portraiture of Roman Jews through an analysis of one family album. The aspiration for a new self-image prompted the Ebrei Romani to defy gentile historical conventions and traditions of portraying Jews in a dismissive, humiliating form, as poor and ragged, clustered in groups, idle, or as comic figures.

The most important debate about Athenian liberty and democracy in 20th-century Italy took place during the Fascism (1922-1943), when the cult of ancient Rome was an essential part of the official ideology, whereas the cultural legacy of ancient Greece was often underestimated. Some outstanding scholars took part in this dispute, among whom the names of Gaetano De Sanctis and of some of his most talented pupils (Aldo Ferrabino, Arnaldo Momigliano, Piero Treves) stand out. In their works, the interpretation of Thucydides played a crucial role, especially with respect of some recurring themes, such as the meditation on the nature of power, the relation between force and justice, ethics and politics, the public rhetoric and its manipulations. The paper aims at precisely presenting the different ways in which Thucydides had been interpreted in early 20th-century Italy, focusing on three different scholars: Gaetano De Sanctis, Aldo Ferrabino and Arnaldo Momigliano

Il X congresso di Chimica dell’Union Internationale de Chimie Pure et Appliquée (UICPA poi IUPAC) si tenne a Roma, insieme alla XIII assemblea generale dell’Unione, nel maggio 1938. L’evento si svolse in un particolare contesto socio-politico. Il regime fascista era all’apice delle sue fortune coloniali e godeva del sostegno popolare. Il Congresso risentì dell’atmosfera retorica che ancora pervadeva Roma dopo la visita di Hitler
e fu una vetrina per lo stato fascista

This paper publishes the text of “The Essence of Greek Culture,” the first public address delivered by Werner Jaeger after his immigration to the United States in 1936. It was part of the program of a symposium sponsored by the Trustees of the University of Chicago in May, 1937 and provides important evidence indicating that Jaeger had begun to adapt ideas he had long supported in Ger­many to conditions in the United States. The text of the paper is preserved in the Archives of the University of Chicago and is published with its permission.
