This paper investigates the evolution of communication preferences over the past five decades and their influence on survey participation and design. Drawing on a quantitative survey of 400 U.S. participants and a comprehensive literature review, the paper examins the transition from handwritten letters to digital communication forms, including email, text messages, and, most recently, visual-based communication through social media and emojis. The survey revealed a pronounced preference for visual elements in survey completion, resonating with the broader societal shift towards image-centric and emoji-enriched interactions. Analysis suggests that the integration of visual communication aligns with contemporary expectations for conciseness and emotional expressiveness, leading to higher engagement and potentially richer data collection. Based on these findings, the paper provides recommendations for modern survey design, emphasising the importance of visual elements, mobile optimisation, cultural sensitivity, and staying abreast of emerging communication trends. Future research directions are proposed, focusing on longitudinal tracking of communication preferences, demographic variations, psychological influences of visual communication, and the ethical considerations of rich media data. This study contributes to the understanding of changing communication paradigms and their implications for effective survey methodologies in a digital era.

Ample scholarship thoroughly documents how modern humanitarian aid enacts legacies of colonialism and processes of Westernization through the imposition of foreign values and promotion of ‘universal’ norms. Extensive research has also explored processes of socio-cultural-moral transformation due to crisis and displacement. This paper extends this work by demonstrating an explicit connection between the two. Drawing on 10 months of ethnographic research that examined how Burundian refugees in Tanzania experience humanitarian social emotional learning (SEL), findings reveal various intersecting lines of crisis in the Nduta refugee camp. This research illuminates how SEL interacts with these lines of crisis to exacerbate intergenerational tensions. The self-centric values promoted through SEL and the pedagogies it employs conflict with the collectivist ethos of the Nduta community, thus breaking the Burundian generational contract of reciprocity, solidarity, and moral responsibility. In this context, SEL operates on conflicting narratives of crisis that clash with generational hopes for the prevention of future crisis in Burundi. These generational fractures are resulting in fears across the Nduta community that the decline of traditional Burundian values and communitarian ethos will not only perpetuate intergenerational experiences of crisis but has also initiated the perceived erasure of their culture and the essence of their humanity.

Internet of things has become a buzzword, and becoming part of the life of the people. In this technological era it has gained economic and social significance. Gen Z is the most technologically sophisticated and diversified generation cohort. This study will provide an insight about the attitude of Z Generation for adopting IoT in digital era in their training and development. The research has been carried out on a sample of 248 respondents belonging to the Z generation who have one year of work experience or either employed on internships. A structured questionnaire is used, and exploratory factor analysis, followed by analysis of multiple regression is used to arrive the results. They are also known as hyperlinked generation or iGeneration. The study's results will be exclusive for Gen Z cohort. The present research will find the attitude of Gen Z about IoT and their usage for training and development. This study will contribute to industry practitioners by formulating strategies in industries for training and development through adoption of IoT. Furthermore, the results will also contribute to academic research by providing suggestions and strategies to develop IoT enabled training and development specific to Gen Z.

El presente documento representa el inicio de una investigación en torno al manejo financiero que prevalece en los microempresarios de la tercera edad en el Estado de Querétaro. Este segmento de la población es cada vez más importante en la actividad económica, dado el cambio en la pirámide de crecimiento poblacional en México y, sin embargo, es uno de los menos estudiados. Este documento tiene como objetivo indagar cuál es el nivel de conocimiento que tienen dichos microempresarios acerca de aspectos financieros básicos y el manejo que le dan a los recursos financieros generados en su actividad empresarial. Para conocer dichos aspectos, se encuestó a 436 microempresarios, formales e informales, de 60 años o más de algunos municipios del Estado de Querétaro. Algunos resultados sobresalientes encontrados en la presente investigación son: que un bajo porcentaje de los microempresarios encuestados tienen conocimiento de conceptos financieros básicos, que su proporción de ingreso/ ahorro es marginal dado que existe gran desconfianza o desconocimiento del sistema financiero formal y, finalmente, el nulo apoyo por parte de los organismos municipales y estatales para mejorar las condiciones de su negocio.

As scholarly interest in generational studies grows, so too does the scrutiny surrounding the phenomenon’s validity. This study addresses both the burgeoning interest and skepticism by proposing an innovative operationalization of generations within the context of Turkey, aiming to introduce new concepts and methodologies to the field. While generational phenomena have often been approached with global or broadly applicable classifications, this research advocates for the consideration of national contexts as pivotal for accurate analysis. Using Turkey as a case study—identified through generations such as the Founders, Republican Generation, First Democrats, Military Coup Generation, First Neoliberals, and Social Media Generation—this study illustrates the application of the proposed operationalization. Conducted through a qualitative inquiry and informed by a multidisciplinary approach involving participants from various social sciences, this research not only names and defines these six generations but also elucidates their defining the initiator, finisher and internal turning points, the spheres of influence, the successor and predecessor members. Such analysis not only addresses existing criticisms but also enriches the discourse on generational dynamics in Turkey. The study emphasizes the critical need to refine operationalization strategies, thereby enhancing generational analysis’s effectiveness.

Using data from the National Sports and Society Survey (N = 3,993), this study described and analyzed U.S. adults’ reports of their youth sports experiences. We considered patterns in ever having played a sport regularly while growing up, ever having played an organized sport, and then relative likelihoods of having never played an organized sport, played and dropped out of organized sports, or played an organized sport continually while growing up. We used binary and multinomial logistic regressions to assess the relevance of generational, gender, racial/ethnic, socioeconomic status, and family and community sport culture contexts for youth sports participation experiences. Overall, the findings highlight general increases in ever playing organized sports and ever playing organized sports and dropping out across generations. Increasing levels of female sports participation, emerging disparities by socioeconomic statuses, and the continual salience of family and community cultures of sport for participation are also striking.

Unter Rückgriff auf Betrachtungsmethoden aus der Narratologie werden textimmanente Konstruktionen von Raumbezügen in dem per se nicht als narrativ zu bezeichnenden Korpus der Pyramidentexte analysiert. Am Einzelbeispiel von Pyramidentextspruch 412 (§§721a–733d) wird die Versprachlichung komplexer räumlicher Strukturen diskutiert sowie mithilfe der Sequenzierung von Handlungssträngen emergente narrative Muster aufgezeigt. Durch den Einsatz narratologischer Instrumentarien bei der Analyse altägyptischer Funerärtexte stellt der Beitrag die narrative Funktionsweise eines nicht-narrativen Textes zur Diskussion.

After researching a myriad of topics and opinions about the shift of sex roles and the future of romantic relationships, it is clear that certain economic, technological, and political changes in the environment account for the degree of societal change like the sexual revolution in the 1960s causing a break in tradition. Conversely, it is also apparent that societal changes, such as generational influence from family, do not rely on outside factors to diverge from tradition and will continuously evolve. As the human race evolves technology, technology also evolves our perspectives of relationships. Dialogic framing means that the frames are constructed through interaction among multiple parties in a discursive system with socio-cultural specificities. The meaning of a frame is articulated through such dialogic interaction and under constant contestation. We used the marriage equality movement in Taiwan as a case study and demonstrated how dialogic framing could advance the understanding of framing in the digital mobilization of collective actions. Analyzing Facebook posts by opposing advocacy groups, we identified "collective identity" and "rights" as two dominant frames. Marriage equality activists framed legalizing same-sex marriage as a testament to the democratic progress of Taiwan and a validation of gay and lesbian people's right of love. The countermovement challenged this framing by arguing that equalizing gay love to heterosexual marital love violated the civil rights of the silent majority. The queer critique of marriage as state-sanctioned regulation of sexual citizenship and the very state power being critiqued are also constitutive of the dialogic framing of collective actions for or against same-sex marriage on social media.

Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork conducted between October 2013 and October 2017 in Hokkaido, northern Japan, this paper explores the trajectories of individuals engaging in hip hop music. Participant observation and narratives indicate that the majority of individuals work as regular members of society (shakaijin) and only pursue hip hop in their free time. The paper highlights the intricate entanglement of individuals in subordination to mainstream values despite their references to elements of resistance. I contend that in contrast to previous generations of hip hoppers who chose to lead lives of open resistance to mainstream values, contemporary youth who largely belong to the “Generation Resignation” (satori sedai) prefer to engage in practices of resistance that may not be evident rather than overt contestation of societal conventions.

Limited uptake of financial incentives, designed to confront global trends of an ageing farming population and low levels of land mobility, reveal resistance or at best ambivalence, amongst farmers towards altering existing farm management and ownership structures in later life. To uncover facets governing the mindset, disposition and practices of older farmers towards succession and retirement, this study draws on Bourdieu's notion of habitus. A multi‐method triangulation methodology is employed to obtain in‐depth understandings of the senior generation's deeply embedded views, and the changes they perceive will occur upon their engagement in the process. Are we witnessing the rise of a global « clash of generations »? Drawing on more than 150 qualitative interviews with young adults aged 18 to 30 in Santiago de Chile, Madrid, Paris, Hong-Kong, and Montréal, this chapter highlights three global trends in intergenerational relations: 1) within the family, intergenerational solidarity is indeed highly mobilized, but pushed to its limit; 2) in society, we observe the affirmation of a 'generational us' associated with a feeling of intergenerational injustice that is particularly noticeable among young graduates and directed more against the 'system' than against the older generations; and 3) at the political level, where the rhetoric of conflict between generations appears to be the most pervasive, with the rise of a generational voice within social movements. We conclude that while the risk of a "clash of generations" exists, it chiefly affects the political sphere, and mainly concerns young graduates.

The loss of organizational knowledge has emerged as a prevalent issue for 21st-century organizations. This systematic review aims to scrutinize knowledge transfer procedures applied to individuals in managerial and intermediate positions during generational change or knowledge management initiatives. Following the PRISMA statement [1], this review progressed through four stages, applying inclusion and exclusion criteria, and ultimately identifying 28 articles for the final analysis. Descriptive indicators and content-related metrics were employed in the study. Key findings include: (1) predominant investment in knowledge retention studies and procedure design is observed among large companies, primarily in the secondary sector; (2) digitalization emerges as a critical aspect of effective organizational knowledge transfer procedures and protocols; (3) intra-organizational communication styles are predominantly employed for knowledge transfer; (4) organizations prefer a collective approach to transferring both tacit and explicit knowledge. In summary, this research offers fresh insights into a pivotal area of business management, showcasing originality in its exploration of knowledge transfer within the realms of generational change and knowledge management.

The level of investment in information communication technologies (ICT) that may affect stock market capitalization varies substantially across countries. Using data on 81 countries from 1998 to 2014, we use a country-fixed effects model to estimate the relationship between ICTs and stock market capitalization. Our empirical model is built on the premise that (1) increased deployment of ICT allows financial market participants to make more informed decisions at reduced inherent risks associated with deficient information or uncertainty in financial markets; and (2) increased access to and use of information communication technologies is expected to improve a country's economic fundamentals. The empirical results support our hypothesis that ICT expansions are positively associated with stock market capitalization.

The influx of non‐European immigrants since 1965 ushered the development and use of acculturation measures in immigrant health studies. A Short Acculturation Scale for Filipino Americans (ASASFA) represents a validated, unidirectional ethnic‐specific measure used with first‐generation FAs. ASASFA's psychometric properties with adult U.S.‐born children—the second generation—remain unexplored. This study determined (a) the factor structure of ASASFA with adult U.S.‐born FAs and (b) the predictors of their acculturation scores. A secondary analysis was conducted on ASASFA data from a mental health survey of 116 U.S.‐born FAs. Exploratory factor and parallel analyses showed a two‐factor solution: language use and preference (Factor 1) and ethnic social relations (Factor 2). In Colombia and other South American countries, government programs have been implemented to improve the livelihoods of coffee farmers. However, the rate of farm succession remains low and the age of farmers continues to increase. Household surveys and focus group discussions were conducted in the community of Chaparral, Tolima Department, Colombia, to examine the socioeconomic and institutional factors that influence family farm succession in the context of these cooperative programs. The study findings suggest that coffee income, parental motivation, secure land tenure, membership in farmer associations, and access to coffee labor have a significant and positive impact on farm succession. To enhance farm succession processes and boost farmers' incomes in the region, it is recommended to strengthen farmer associations and establish secure land tenure policies.

Young people in Europe are often described as apolitical non-participants in the civic culture of their own states and the European Union (EU). Using empirical data based on group discussions (n = 324) in 29 European states (104 locations; 2000 young people aged between 11 and 19), this paper challenges this, and suggests that many young people have distinct political views and are motivated to participate in both political discussions and traditional and non-traditional forms of participation. They are particularly interested in a range of current issues, largely around human rights, migration and (anti-)nationalism, and the article illustrates this with examples from a range of countries. V článku jsou představeny problémy spojené s nejednotností chápání mainstreamu v samotné sociologii mládeže. Autorka se snaží vysvětlit, proč není vhodné zkoumat mainstreamovou mládež odděleně z kulturní a strukturální perspektivy. Dotýká se také některých zavedených stereotypů spojených s mainstreamem, jako jsou generace rodičů, konzumerismus a nepřátelský systém, na nichž demonstruje, že rebelie a nonkonformita nejsou dominantními charakteristikami většiny současné mládeže. Článek poukazuje na paradox, kdy se současná mládež ukazuje být navzdory povrchnímu zdání nonkonformity ve svých hodnotách stále více konformní a konzervativní. Analýza naznačuje, že tento fakt je možné vysvětlit v termínech individualisticky orientovaných hodnot mládeže, kdy se individualismus všudypřítomný v jejich životech stává novou konformitou. Opírá se přitom o data z výzkumů hodnotových orientací mladých lidí v české společnosti z let 1991, 1999 a 2008.

The research examines Generation Z’s (Gen Z’s) attitudes, behavior and awareness regarding sustainability-oriented products in two European countries, located in the region of Western Balkans, Bosnia–Herzegovina and Serbia. The research deploys generational cohort theory (GCT) and a quantitative analysis of primary data collected through an online questionnaire among 1338 primary, high school and university students, all belonging to Generation Z. It deploys a Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) by running both Maximum Likelihood (ML) and Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) procedures, the latter being suitable for binary variables, which have been deployed in the study. Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork conducted between October 2013 and October 2017 in Hokkaido, northern Japan, this paper explores the trajectories of individuals engaging in hip hop music. Participant observation and narratives indicate that the majority of individuals work as regular members of society (shakaijin) and only pursue hip hop in their free time. The paper highlights the intricate entanglement of individuals in subordination to mainstream values despite their references to elements of resistance. I contend that in contrast to previous generations of hip hoppers who chose to lead lives of open resistance to mainstream values, contemporary youth who largely belong to the “Generation Resignation” (satori sedai) prefer to engage in practices of resistance that may not be evident rather than overt contestation of societal conventions.

RésuméCet article vise à explorer le champ des études de population en France à travers le contenu des thèses de doctorat soutenues dans ce pays au cours de la dernière décennie (2000-2012). Nous utilisons pour cela une base de données regroupant 943 thèses. Les analyses menées sont issues de modèles multivariés et de méthodes de statistique textuelle. Les résultats montrent la présence majoritaire de thèses réalisées en référence principalement à la sociologie et dans une moindre mesure à la démographie. La migration constitue la thématique la plus fréquemment traitée. Elle est principalement abordée en lien avec la culture, l’identité, la religion, les minorités, de façon qualitative, ou avec les notions d’environnement, de territoire, de logement. Les études sur la mortalité et la santé ou sur la dynamique de population adoptent généralement une démarche plus quantitative et de modélisation tandis que celles portant sur la fécondité, la famille, la sexualité et la nuptialité oc...
