History of the Greek language

This paper deals with an under-studied grammatical feature of Medieval and Early Modern Greek, viz. the concessive markers containing the adverb καλά/kala ('well'). The basic aim is to shed light on their historical evolution with a view toward understanding the complicated interconnection between the internal vis-à-vis the external factors in language change as well as the nature of the grammaticalization process allegedly involved in the change in question. Through a detailed investigation into the written record, it is illustrated that language contact and internal causes, though closely interwoven, they should be carefully distinguished with respect to the exact chronological period during which they were active. Further, the proposed analysis of the change takes a constructional perspective on the grammaticalization of the subordinating conjunctions and highlights the role of analogy as the principal mechanism in diachronic syntactic evolution.

La lingua greca, da quando per la prima entrò in contatto con le popolazioni dell’Italia antica, non ha mai smesso di influenzarne i linguaggi. È del risultato di questa influenza, continuativa e sostanziale, che si cerca di dare una visione d’insieme, la più chiara ed esaustiva possibile. In quest’opera, che non è né vuole essere una storia della lingua greca, viene quindi fotografato lo stato attuale dei rapporti tra il greco e le altre lingue europee (o dovremmo dire indoeuropee). Oltre 3000 parole greche, siano essi prestiti o antiprestiti poco cambia, un vasto repertorio di nomi propri di origine greca, radici, suffissi, prefissi, costituiscono un potente strumento di dialogo tra le lingue qui prese in esame, che, grazie ad essi, si rivelano più vicine di quanto non si immagini. Un secondo fenomeno, poi, quello dei calchi, ovvero la traduzione delle parole greche in latino, iniziato già nella Roma arcaica con Andronico e proseguito con autori quali Plauto e Cicerone, ha fatto sì che si creassero neologismi latini, ma dall’anima profondamente greca.  Prestiti ed antiprestiti paralleli e calchi permettono dunque di dire che la provocazione “parliamo greco” non è poi così lontana dalla realtà.  Fondamentale per quest’opera è tuttavia cercare di evidenziare quanto questo patrimonio linguistico, profondamente penetrato nelle varie lingue, possa essere impiegato per mettere in comunicazione le moderne lingue europee tra di loro; far sì che esse possano riconoscersi reciprocamente sorelle. La lingua greca, che essendo nel DNA delle lingue europee, continua ad essere impiegata per creare straordinari neologismi, si rivela essere uno strumento di decodificazione, ma anche di produzione di concetti. Anche oggi la Grecia continua a ricordarci, che, volente o nolente, ogni popolo che  sia entrato in contatto con la sua lingua ha da lei ricevuto in omaggio un patrimonio archetipico, duttile, creativo, capace di far riscoprire la necessità di sentirsi comunità umana, al di là dei confini politici, oggi più o meno esistenti.

This article aims to draw a general picture of Lucian of Samosata’s perception of Christianity through the analysis of the peculiar vocabulary used in chapt. 11 of his De morte Peregrini, where Christianity is mentioned as θαυμαστὴ σοφία and καινὴ τελετή. To do this, at first, the different meanings and the evolution of these two nouns in the context of the history of the Greek language have been analyzed; subsequently, they have been studied in their specific uses within Lucian’s works. After this preliminary analysis, from which an apparent difficulty to reconcile the two terms with the definition of Christian religion has emerged, the attention has been focused on their specific use related to Christianity in De morte Peregrini. As for θαυμαστὴ σοφία, the narrative context and the particular connotation of Jesus as σοφιστής (given in a later passage and read in the light of the historic-religious category of θεῖος ἀνήρ) have made it possible to recognize a specific meaning as set of knowledge and norms that makes up the doctrine transmitted to Christians by Jesus, i.e. as the ‘content’ of Christianity; the definition of καινὴ τελετή, which concerns instead the ‘external form’ of Christianity, has found an explanation in the context of the general structure of Greek polytheism (in which the general concept of ‘religion’ is missing), which determines the impossibility for Lucian to understand and explain Christianity outside the traditional parameters, and leads him to identify it as one of the various options of devotional and initiatory worship that were spreading within Greek religion. Finally, the cross-reading of these two definitions in the light of the surrounding vocabulary and of the conception of Jesus as θεῖος ἀνήρ, allowed to recognize in Lucian an attitude of general lack of interest and slight mockery towards Christianity, which connects him to other intellectuals of the time, even on the linguistic level.

The paper discusses the synchronic and diachronic tendencies of the system of in-tensification in Ancient Greek which bases on Paradis' (2000; 2005; 2008) theoretical framework (see for Greek Γαβριηλίδου 2013α; 2014). The intensification in Ancient Greek is multi-level (phonological, morphological, syntactic and lexical). The morphological system comprises derivational affixes and compound constituents (adjectival, pronominal and adverbial/prepositional). The derivational intensifica-tion involves non-productive and fully constrained processes, which represent mainly the peripheral/marginal register, whereas the compound intensification is more productive and is influenced by grammaticalization processes, which lead to intensifying structures via semantic (degree-based) reinterpretation of the bases. Until Standard Modern Greek, the morphological intensification system is reinforced and is converted into a more derivation-based one, which keeps mainly the Ancient Greek prepositions as prefixes and incorporates new segments.

The book analyzes a passage from Sophocles ("Trachiniae", vv. 153-160) and another from Plutarch ("De genio Socratis", 5, 577 F) in which two tablets inscribed in "mysteric" characters are cited, in all probability documents, instead, written in Linear B, the syllabic Aegean writing used for the transcription of the (already Greek) Mycenaean dialect. Basing his research on the analysis of these two passages, the Author elaborates a new theory regarding the perception of the ancient Greeks about their past before the so-called 'Dark Ages'. The essay is, therefore, a contribution - in the field of Mycenaeology - to the study of the issue of the origins of Greek populations and it approaches for the first time, in this interpretive key, the two quoted passages. The book is accompanied by chronologies, by a set of illustrations, by a detailed and updated bibliography on the subject, and by maps.

An attempt to to share with you a story, some hi-story of my mother tongue, GREEK and stress how important was the contribution of this language to science, the arts, drama, philosophy and to the shaping of our modern civilization.To be able to do this I used the two disciplines I studied: Semiology and Archaeology. This is a tribute to my Master, the late Michel Cusin from the University of Lyon 2

The fall of the Mycenaean palatial civilization, that spoke and wrote already a Greek dialect (handed down by the Linear B tablets), the presumed arrival in Greece of invaders, the Dorians, who sank the Hellas in the so-called "Dark Ages", the legends born to explain, in myth, this event (the return of the Heracleides), the new language system and the new hierarchies of the archaic Greece, "daughter" of these traumatic events, are the salient features of the so-called "Dorian issue". The volume deals with the problems of historical interpretation related to this dawning era of the ancient Greece, comparing the most important hypothesis proposed so far by scholars on the subject. The reader will be in front of the theories by now "classic" of eminent specialists, such as John Chadwick (who collaborated with Michael Ventris to the procedure of deciphering of the Linear B writing), and the assumptions inherent in the most recent hypothesis about the arrival of the Dorians in Greece. Using instruments that are mainly linguistic, without neglecting historical and archaeological elements, according to a criterion of scientific rigor that does not ignore the needs of the non-specialist readers, the Author tries to outline the salient features of a long and difficult process that led to the birth of archaic Greece, in the transition, even symbolic, from the syllabic writing like the Aegean handwritings to the Greek alphabetical writing of Phoenician kind and from the civilization of the Mycenaean palaces to that of the 'polis'. The book is accompanied by extensive comparative chronologies, grouped in a special section to help the readers in order to orient themselves within the framework history examined, and an extensive bibliography, useful study repertoire in order to provide for further researches.

The present contribution offers an overview of the available primary and metalinguistic sources which provide evidence about the geographical spread of the Greek-speaking zone in Southern Italy during the Late Medieval and Early Modern period. It also discusses a number of linguistic features, phonological and morphological, which are first recorded in these sources, and shed light on the genesis of the local Greek dialectal varieties.

This paper attempts to examine the relationship between the representation of the Greek language and its history, and the particular nature of Modern Greek reform in the 19th century. Our point is that the Greek scholars' lack of determination to prescribe purist language (total absence of  grammars and monolingual dictionaries), or perhaps a very special view of prescription, is linked to a vision of reform based on modern Greek founding myths formed in the 19th century. During this period, a set of appraisals, judgements or assumptions generate an image of Greek language history and from this image emerge founding myths on « character », « nature » and evolution of the language (inseparability, uniqueness and conservative character of Greek). Linguistic mythology, as a part of the national ideology, is built within a particular historical context and it appears in a discourse that legitimizes a set of political and cultural goals. These founding myths shape a mental framework within which the objectives and the means of reform are set. In this context, any attempt to compose normative works is explicitly rejected.

This volume fills the need for a new critical edition and linguistic study of John Kananos' account of the siege of Constantinople in 1422. New research on the manuscripts has produced a new stemma codicum and shown that the oldest witness of this narrative, Vat. gr. 579 (ff. 355r - 364v), was written in Constantinople and belonged to the prolific scribe Phlamules Kontostephanos, who also provided the copy with a title in which the name of John Kananos is mentioned for the first time. The philological approach adopted here explains contradictions among the manuscripts and Kananos' peculiar vernacularisms and reveals a surprisingly realistic and elaborate Greek. The accompanying English translation, a chapter on the language of Kananos, and a complete thesaurus make this volume a valuable contribution to the study of late Byzantine literature.

This paper deals with root nouns in the Homeric language. Though root nouns were a very important morphological class of nouns in Proto-Indo-European, it is argued that they no longer constitute a definite, well-determined noun class within the lexicon of Ancient Greek. It is also shown that the very essence of lexical roots is somewhat slippery and their definition problematic. Finally, an analysis of ablaut in Homeric root nouns is attempted: though the data are too scanty to draw any solid conclusions, a certain tendency for o-grade root nouns to express a 'stative' meaning invites to carry on research on this topic.

Rispetto agli altri due grandi lessici etimologici bizantini recenziori, ovvero il Symeonis ed il
Magnum, il Gudianum mostra sicuramente una minor vicinanza al loro comune capostipite, ovvero
l’Etymologicum Genuinum. Rispetto a quest’ultimo, il Gudianum lemmatizza un numero ben
superiore di termini di origine non greca (soprattutto latinismi e semitismi), mentre sembra molto
meno sviluppato l’interesse per il concetto di correttezza linguistica (ἑλληνισμός), così come per i
suoi corrispettivi negativi (βαρβαρισμός e σολοικισμός).
In virtù di questa tendenza non purista ben ravvisabile nell’opera, può risultare interessante valutare
se essa coincida con un disinteresse per gli autori della Commedia Antica, che una tradizione ormai
consolidata aveva eletto a modello linguistico (tanto forse da portare all’oblio del più ‘semplice’ e,
secondo alcuni, ‘sgrammaticato’ Menandro).  Si intende dunque mostrare come effettivamente le citazioni esplicite dalla Commedia Antica siano
nettamente più rare rispetto all’Etymologicum Genuinum, dove invece il lascito della tradizione
purista (anche atticista) non è trascurabile.
Ampia attenzione sarà dedicata, in particolare, alle citazioni dei principali autori della Commedia
Antica pervenuti soltanto frammentariamente (Cratino, Eupoli, Ferecrate, Platone comico). Mentre il
ricordo di Eupoli, per quanto più opaco che nel Genuinum, appare non ancora completamente svanito
– il Gudianum ne fa il nome cinque volte e ne conserva una citazione andata perduta nella tradizione
diretta del Genuinum –, la presenza degli altri tre commediografi è ridotta ai minimi termini. In
particolare, Cratino, il poeta della ἀρχαία a noi meglio noto dopo Aristofane, scompare, nonostante il suo nome comparisse ben sette volte presso le sole lettere Α–Β del Genuinum.
Assolutamente notevole, poi, è una delle soltanto due citazioni di Ferecrate, che aveva fama di
Ἁττικώτατος presso il rigido atticista Frinico: ad essere citata è una delle forme più irregolari che
possano essere trovate presso il commediografo, ovvero l’accusativo γυνήν (in vece di γυναῖκα), che
viene peraltro sfruttato indebitamente per affermare che κλίνεται [...] ἡ γυνή κατὰ τὰς ἄλλας πτώσεις
ὡς τὰ εἰς η λήγοντα. In questo modo, viene conferita dignità a un tipo di declinazione che, come
traspare dalla coeva produzione scritta di età bizantina, doveva essere ben diffuso nella lingua
corrente. In generale, le glosse del Gudianum che conservano citazioni della Commedia Antica
frammentaria sono dedicate a parole ancora in uso nella lingua di allora, e spesso dotate di un preciso
significato religioso (ad esempio βρυγμός, in epoca bizantina quasi sempre cristallizzato
nell’evangelico ὁ βρυγμὸς τῶν ὀδόντων), mentre, rispetto al Genuinum, tendono a perdersi tutte
quelle parole le cui uniche attestazioni note figurano soltanto (o quasi) in commedia (in particolare,
nella Commedia Antica) e nella successiva letteratura esegetico-erudita. L’impressione complessiva,
dunque, è quella che effettivamente l’Etymologicum Gudianum sia un’opera dettata da gusti, interessi
ed esigenze profondamente diversi rispetto a quelli che avevano ispirato il Genuinum: una
differenza che potrebbe essere dovuta alla diversità del contesto storico e geografico
in cui i due lessici vennero pensati e portati a compimento (l'Italia Meridionale, nel caso del Gudianum?).

The paper aims to give a comprehensive picture and a historical sketch of the linguistic variety spoken in the Saronic Gulf island of Aegina. The variety, now extinct, belongs to the socalled “Old Athenian” dialect group, and has not been investigated since the publication of Thumb’s paper in 1891. Published as well as hitherto unpublished / unknown material, including sound recordings, was examined for the purposes of the present paper. The new material revealed several interesting features, such as phonological archaisms, or features that link the variety to the Aegean insular varieties. This type of dialectal research can provide decisive data for the tracing of the linguistic history of Greek, during the Medieval and Early Modern period.
