L'emporio-pilota della Supermarkets Italiani spa aprì a Milano, in viale Regina Giovanna, il 27 novembre del 1957, in piena vigilia del "boom" economico. Fu una rivoluzione delle abitudini di consumo, perché il supermercato "all'americana" comportava il pagamento alla cassa ed era concepito su misura delle abitudini di consumo e del benessere della classe media emergente. Era l'opposto dei tradizionali, piccoli negozi, dove le classi popolari facevano la spesa facendo addebitare la cifra sul "conto". Su questa rivoluzione dei consumi si misurò uno scontro a livello politico: da un lato, le sinistre all'opposizione del governo cittadino, favorevoli a difendere le ragioni del piccolo commercio (presso il quale facevano abitualmente la spesa i ceti più umili), che si percepiva minacciato; dall'altro, i centristi di governo (DC e PSDI) paladine dei ceti moderati.

The paper presents up-to-date estimates of Italy’s regional GDP, with the present borders, in ten-year benchmarks from 1871 to 2001, and proposes a new interpretative hypothesis based on long-lasting socio-institutional differences. The inverted U-shape of income inequality is confirmed: rising divergence until the mid-twentieth century, then convergence. However, the latter was limited to the centre-north: Italy was divided into three parts by the time regional inequality peaked, in 1951, and appears to have been split into two halves by 2001. As a consequence of the falling back of the south, from 1871 to 2001 we record σ-divergence across Italy’s regions, i.e. an increase in dispersion, and sluggish β-convergence. Geographical factors and the market size played a minor role: against them are both the evidence that most of the differences in GDP are due to employment rather than to productivity and the observed GDP patterns of many regions. The gradual converging of regional GDPs towards two equilibria instead follows social and institutional differences − in the political and economic institutions and in the levels of human and social capital − which originated in pre-unification states and did not die (but in part even increased) in post-unification Italy.

L’autarchia costituì, dalla metà degli anni Trenta, uno dei più ambiziosi e più esibiti obiettivi del regime fascista. Un ruolo di indiscutibile rilevanza in quel progetto fu svolto dall'amministrazione degli Scambi e valute, elevata dal 1937 al rango di ministero e guidata fino al 1939 da Felice Guarneri, già dirigente dell'associazionismo imprenditoriale, divenuto uno dei più autorevoli tra i “grand commis” di Mussolini. Fino alle soglie della seconda guerra mondiale, lo Scambi e valute si trovò a governare di fatto i rapporti con l’estero del mondo economico italiano, secondo un orientamento non sempre compatibile con la politica industriale, finanziaria, militare ed estera dei vertici del fascismo. Intrecciando temi propri della storia istituzionale, della storia politica e della storia economica, il volume esamina il contesto in cui ebbe luogo la costituzione dello Scambi e valute, le originali soluzioni istituzionali adottate, i diversi campi in cui si svolse il suo intervento e le complesse interazioni con la politica fascista.

"Alla domanda «perché il Sud è rimasto indietro?» sono state date risposte diverse, fra le più lontane l’una dall’altra. Una letteratura di lunga data pone l’accento sulle differenze fra i meridionali e il resto degli italiani, di tipo culturale o etico, quando non addirittura genetico: i meridionali finiscono sul banco degli imputati, senza grosse distinzioni fra loro. Un altro genere di risposte biasima la geografia avversa, oppure denuncia lo sfruttamento ad opera degli italiani del Nord: qui i meridionali vengono assolti, ma di nuovo senza distinzioni, al punto che perfino i misfatti di certe classi dirigenti appaiono ridimensionati.
Il libro ricostruisce i divari regionali sotto diversi aspetti (reddito, istruzione, sviluppo umano e civile) al momento dell’Unità, demolendo il mito che vorrebbe un Mezzogiorno allora paragonabile al Centro-Nord, e poi la loro evoluzione fino ai nostri giorni. Il cuore della trattazione sta in una terza risposta: la «miseria degli uomini», cioè la più alta disuguaglianza dei redditi e delle ricchezze, hanno fatto sì che al Sud prevalessero istituzioni estrattive, anziché inclusive come nel Centro-Nord. È stato questo il fattore che maggiormente ha frenato lo sviluppo del Mezzogiorno. La responsabilità ricade sulle classi dirigenti che quelle istituzioni hanno sorretto e incarnato; su quanti nel tempo si sono accaparrati benefici e risorse, avendo interesse a mantenere l’economia e la società involute in una «modernizzazione passiva».

The essay analyzes the evolution of Florentine business societies during the 14th century. The decisive watershed separating one era from another is represented by the great failures of the 1340s: a traumatic event, capable of negatively involving an entire city economy and many foreign savers, which was almost immediately followed by the Black Death. Faced with the challenges imposed by a demographically reduced but not for this reason poorer world, the Florentine mercantile-banking companies made choices that would have impressed a structural and long-term change to the productive structures of their city.

On 9 November 2011 the spread between Italian government bonds and German bunds reached a record high of 553 basis points. Only two years before, that difference was negligible: financial markets had been treating all European countries as if they were effectively the same. This is because the European Monetary Union was founded on the assumption that member countries would converge toward a neoliberal economic model. Yet, the recent Eurozone crisis reminds us that this process never fully took place. Inspired by these developments, this thesis asks why conversion to a neoliberal model did not occur in Italy. More specifically, this study retraces the historical reasons why the precepts of neoliberalism never dominated economic policymaking in Italy.
To do so, I identify four main actors in economic policymaking: political parties, unions, industrialists, and the Catholic Church. I then evaluate the influence of these actors by undertaking a longitudinal study of three waves of neoliberal pressures in Italy since WWII. I find that, while the position of most of these actors has fluctuated over time, political parties have constituted a constant obstacle to neoliberal reforms in Italy.
The findings of this research are not confined to theoretical debates. This study provides an important starting point to reevaluate policymaking strategies both at the Italian and at the European level. Overall, historical evidence suggests that European authorities cannot impose nor expect economic convergence without a full ideological and political engagement of those national actors responsible for domestic economic policy.

Si pone in rilievo il ruolo di una rivista di disegno industriale, oggi design, nella storia dell'italiano contemporaneo. Fondata dall'architetto Alberto Rosselli nel 1954, la pubblicazione trimestrale e poi bimestrale, «Stile industria», accompagnerà per nove anni la crescita della società italiana del "boom" economico, dando una forma testuale e linguistica al dibattito intorno all’estetica della produzione in serie, e toccando nel contempo un insieme di fenomeni e processi riguardanti diversi strati della popolazione coinvolti nella produzione e nel consumo dei beni. La nuova realtà produttiva, che ha profondamente modificato la vita della società italiana condizionando a partire dagli anni Cinquanta gli usi e i costumi della quotidianità, ha trovato nella disciplina del design una delle manifestazioni più evidenti. Alla sua fisionomia di materia e tecnica e artistica corrispondeva appieno l’impostazione del periodico guidato da Rosselli. E così, nella scrittura "del" e "sul" design, le parole antiche, "forma" e "formale", "funzione", acquistano una nuova accezione circoscritta al lavoro del designer. All’epoca poco frequenti nella lingua d’uso, i termini che le affiancano, "funzionale" e "funzionalità", dal linguaggio tecnologico passeranno rapidamente in quello del commercio e della pubblicità, per fissarsi stabilmente nel lessico di settori diversi. A questi si aggiungono "efficienza" ed "estetica", l’antico "creativo" con il valore del tutto nuovo di ‘dotato di fantasia e inventiva’ e la neoformazione "creatività".

Gino Arias (1879-1940), storico ed economista fiorentino di origini israelite, fu, nella sua maturità, tra i massimi teorici del corporativismo fascista, cui approdò al termine di un itinerario intellettuale ancora largamente inedito. Ricomposta la sua biografia, il volume indaga gli esordi di Arias come storico del diritto, il suo transito verso l'economia politica e la successiva adesione al nazionalismo, premessa del suo coinvolgimento in quel regime fascista di cui sarebbe stato, paradossalmente, uno dei più accreditati teorici ed una delle vittime più illustri, a causa dell'esilio cui lo avrebbero costretto le leggi raziali. Il volume, in appendice, propone una ricca documentazione inedita, comprendente l'inventario del suo archivio, la trascrizione di 130 lettere ad Achille Loria e la sua bibliografia.

Il capitolo ricostruisce l’evoluzione per settori dell’industria manifatturiera in Italia, approssimativamente dall’Unificazione ai nostri giorni, attraverso le vicende delle imprese ritenute di volta in volta più significative. I diversi regimi tecnologici e il contesto politico-economico di riferimento rappresentano le impalcature essenziali del tessuto narrativo, che vuole essere di tipo preminentemente qualitativo (per quel che concerne gli aspetti micro-economici: i casi di impresa), ma con attenzione agli aspetti quantitativi essenziali (l’evoluzione nell’aggregato dei settori). L’ambizione è riuscire a dare conto della multidimensionalità dell’eccellenza italiana, pur senza celare le aree di criticità. La linea interpretativa si incentra sul binomio «permanenze» e «discontinuità»: le prime si fondano essenzialmente sulla dotazione strutturale del Paese, mentre le discontinuità rappresentano la capacità di cogliere le opportunità offerte dal mutamento delle condizioni internazionali e dal progresso tecnico.

Che cosa fu l’Inquisizione romana? In che modo gli inquisitori operarono nella società italiana del Cinque-Seicento? Per tentare di rispondere a tali quesiti, l’autore prende in analisi la familia inquisitoriale, il nutrito gruppo di assistenti del tribunale di fede. Alla luce di una ricca documentazione inedita, vengono ricostruite per la prima volta le vicende del personale del Sant’Uffizio, composto da vicari, notai, avvocati, consultori, sbirri, guardie del corpo e altri. Nel libro vengono indagate la trattatistica inerente a questi patentati, la loro distribuzione geografia e le confraternite entro le quali furono inquadrati. In seguito sono analizzati i privilegi di cui godettero i familiari e gli abusi spesso efferati che essi commisero, dimostrando come l’Inquisizione sia divenuta un elemento di disordine sociale e morale ogniqualvolta venne messa in dubbio la sua autorità.

The friulian region in the late medieval period has often been regarded as economically detached from the more dynamic and developed italian cities. Recent research and the discovery of a register of a small florentine company in Udine encourage a more nuanced opinion. This paper analyses the action and the business of the "Chonpagnia della Stazone", established by two florentines in Udine in the mid-XIVth century. The study of their trades and network of relations higlights the integration of the region, Udine in particular, into the wider frame of the economy of north and central Italy, playing an active role in trade at an interregional level.

Il saggio analizza la figura di Alfano Alfani, mercante-banchiere di Perugia che fu responsabile della Tesoreria della provincia pontificia dell’Umbria dal 1500 al 1550. Esponente di una famiglia di mercanti che si affermò in epoca bassomedievale, intrattenne rapporti di affari
con grandi compagnie commerciali internazionali (Spannocchi, Sauli, Medici). Nel contempo, svolse un’intensa attività di patronage nell’ambito della cultura, che lo mise a contatto con protagonisti degli ambienti letterari e artistici del Rinascimento italiano, quali Pico della Mirandola e Raffaello. Attraverso l’analisi di documenti inediti, la ricerca consente di ricostruire l’intreccio di relazioni sociali che rappresentò la cornice della creativa circolazione di interessi economici, istituzionali e culturali verificatasi nell’area pontificia tra XV e XVI secolo.

The aim of this paper is to analyze the economic goals of the Ethiopian War and the results of the Fascist Empire in Italian East Africa (Africa orientale italiana). In this respect, the creation of the new colony in East Africa gave rise undoubtedly to a failure. It was the consequence of the weakness and the lack of planning that characterized the origin of the “Empire” – as it is testified, for instance, by confused and contradictory laws and frequent conflicts of jurisdiction – and was also the consequence of big companies’ lack of interest in colonial investments.

The paper focus on a crucial turning point of the industrialization of the Italian silk industry, occurred  in the middle of XIXth century, challenging the pebrina's crisis, which was a very hard obstacle for Italian silk entrepreneurs. The main source used is Inchiesta Industriale, a large inquiry promoted by the Italian Parliament at the beginning of 1870's.

Il presente saggio propone una riflessione generale sull’inserimento dell’economia italiana nell’Europa comunitaria.  L’integrazione rappresentò uno strumento per ricostruire la legittimità delle classi dirigenti attraverso l’aumento del benessere economico della popolazione. Ma questo aumento del benessere come si realizzò? Con quali criteri venne distribuito? Chi ne trasse maggiormente beneficio? Per rispondere a queste domande è necessario destrutturare l’espressione “Stato nazione” e domandarsi cosa vi si celi dietro. Quale tipo di classe dirigente l’integrazione “salva”? Quali sono le sue concezioni di sviluppo e su quali basi fonda il suo potere?

Lo studio si propone di indagare il sostanziale cambiamento avvenuto nella gestione del personale nei centri lanieri toscani attivi tra XIV e XVI secolo. In particolare, l’enfasi è posta sul ruolo sempre più centrale degli interme- diari che si occupavano della distribuzione del lavoro ai singoli lavoranti, i quali finirono progressivamente per risultare del tutto ignoti ai lanaioli. Que- sto può contribuire a spiegare l’erosione della capacità contrattuale del per- sonale non specializzato, che permetteva ai lanifici di comprimere o ampliare il numero degli occupati a seconda della congiuntura economica.

The area of Lucca seems relatively neglected by the most recent Italian economic historiography. Apart from research primarily devoted to political or demographic issues, some of which date back several decades, the rich documentary patrimony preserved in the archives of Lucca was until now only partially exploited. This paper aims to provide new data and reflections to the debate which sees the study of the inequality in the distribution of wealth as a key issue in the analysis of economic development in the long run. By using the data recorded by some fiscal registers (the estimi of the fourteenth and sixteenth centuries and the catasto guinigiano of the early fifteenth century), a kind of source which already proved to be an excellent tool to measure the levels of wealth of the surveyed population and to reconstruct its macroeconomic trends of concentration, we will try to provide a first overview of the distribution of property in the countryside of the city of silk. A particular attention will be paid also to the possible impact of the Black Death which, according to the most recent literature, seems to have led to a long period of decline in inequality ended only around the second half of the fifteenth century.

This paper uses the conceptual categories of Open Access Order (OAO) and Limited Access Order (LAO) developed by North, Wallis and Weingast (2009) to explain the origins and persistence of Italian North- South economic divide since the country unification in 1861. We argue that, despite the existence of the same set of formal institutions, historically the North of the country progressively developed into an OAO, while in the South only an “horizontal” transition took place whereby it remained a LAO, with aristocratic privileges being substituted by rents allocated to lobbies and political clienteles. Using original data on crime and participation to elections and referendums, we show that this evolution was the result of the failure of the State, in the South, to acquire the monopoly over the legitimate use of violence and to operate as an efficient and credible coordination mechanism. With the support of data on education and female labour participation, we claim that this led to a much more unequal access to resources and opportunities, leading to a gap in income per capita which persisted over time and it is still visible today being unparalleled in the Western world.

This paper proposes a new interpretation of the historically controversial role of Italian latifundia. Relying on standard economic theory, the paper explores a simple though neglected mechanism linking land inequality and inefficiency: market power. In underdeveloped economies with serious constraints on labor mobility, high ownership concentration will endow landowners with market power in local labor markets. The resulting equilibrium explains many of the often criticized features of latifundia, without the need to factor in irrational behavior (the preferred explanation of Italian traditional historians) or social institutions and capital
market imperfections (explanations advanced by economists in different contexts). According to the model here explored the main effects of inequality are of a distributive rather than of a productive nature. The market power hypothesis is strongly supported by the available quantitative evidence provided by an unexploited dataset on all local labor markets of Italy at the end of the 1930s.

This paper investigates the causes of the traditional practice of intercropping – i.e., of scattering vines across fields rather than concentrating them in specialized vineyards. We interpret it as a risk management strategy based on spatial diversification, which entailed transportation costs. We test our model with data for 1930s Italy, where intercropping was widely but unevenly diffused. We show that its adoption was positively related to the pattern of scattered dwellings which dated back to the late Middle Ages and reduced transportation costs to individual plots.

This paper identifies some traits that characterised the history of the porcelain manufacture of Doccia when it was a possession of the Ginori family, from the foundation to the fusion with the "Società Ceramica Richard” in 1896. The origin itself of the manufacture was unusual: not mercantile but mercantilist, not only entrepreneurial but also administrative. Such peculiarities descended and depended from the founder himself: Carlo Ginori, a passionate alchemist and an illuminist at core who united entrepreneurial vision and market knowledge with a great capacity to administer and govern territories and properties.
From this origin, the manufactory derived four characteristics that persisted through its long life under the control of the Ginori family. Firstly, being a personal possession of the family and never a corporation with its own personality, the factory was managed by “ministers”. This occurrence confronted the property, ahead of its time, with all agency problems typical of modern corporations with separated ownership and control. Sometimes, as in the case of Johannon de Saint Laurent, Jacopo Fanciullacci and Paolo Lorenzini, the relationship run smoothly, in other cases it created fractures and strategic incapacity. Secondly, Doccia was immediately created as a centralized production facility and for all its life it made no concession to homeworking and decentralisation. In such a context, again ahead of times, to authoritarian excesses on the side of the property corresponded early collective claims from the workforce: an exercise for future industrial relations. A third point regards accounting methods. Accounting was a meticulous presence inside the manufacture, but did not correspond in any way to the usual merchant one. Considering unsold stocks as present values, the manufactory at times managed inventories with presumed values higher than that of the entire production facility, while active sale strategies were adopted only at the end of the eighteenth century. The family was appeased by a constant influx of income from its various activities and would not pursue growth per se. Accounting, in this sense, was more an instrument of control over administrators than the base for strategic reasoning. The modernization of bookkeeping was introduced just in the first half of the nineteenth century. Last characteristic that Doccia derived from its peculiar foundation was the inheritance problem. Fighting among heirs, heirs still not of age, trustees with little decision power were common traits of each generational transit. All these problems increased the decision power of administrators, exacerbating agency conflicts.
With this complex heredity, the porcelain manufacture of Doccia crossed the centuries of industrialization, from the alchemical crucible to mass consumption, bearing witness of the social and cultural changes entailed in economic modernization. Often ahead of times, the Ginori manufacture experienced social conflicts, paternalism, the passage from entrepreneurship to a managed enterprise, bureaucratization and the relationship with the surrounding territory. It did so with a success that should not only be measured in terms of profits or generated income flows, but also from a social and cultural point of view. In time, as count Fossombroni wrote in his report on the manufacture, written in 1780, the manufactory came to represent an art gallery, for the beauty of its products, a social establishment for the employment it generated, a succesfull trade, given its sales and exports, and a stimulus for all landed proprietors to dedicate their capital and talent to industrial pursuits. A call for successful aristocratic entrepreneurship.

By making the most of a newly-available large set of historical statistics, the paper outlines the main features of Italy’s modern economic growth from unification (1861) until the present day (2011). Alongside national GDP estimates, regional inequality, living standards and inequality of personal income distribution are also discussed. Over the long run, Italy successfully caught up with the most advanced economies, and did so in a virtuous manner: while the regional imbalance persisted, at the national level economic growth was accompanied by a secular decline in income inequality. This pattern has come to a halt: during the last two decades, stagnation in GDP per capita has been mirrored by an unprecedented decline in productivity; southern regions have further lagged behind the rest of the country, and income inequality is on the rise. agricultural output and inputs during the interwar years.Anewdatabase on Italian agriculture
around 1930 fully confirms the key role of access to domestic markets in shaping agricultural
activity. Thus, the causes of Southern agriculture falling behind are revealed: it is not very
surprising that an agricultural divergence joined an already ongoing industrial divergence
during a period in which international markets collapsed. It was the growth of Northern
industry that led to the growth of Northern agriculture, and not vice versa."
