Latin manuscripts

We present an end-to-end system for aligning transcript letters to their coordinates in a manuscript image. An intuitive GUI and an automatic line detection method enable the user to perform an exact alignment of glyphs on the manuscript with an existing transcription. In order to bridge large regions in between annotation, and augment the manual effort, the system employs an opticalflow engine for directly matching at the pixel level the image of a line of a historical text with a synthetic image created from the transcript’s matching line. Meanwhile, by accumulating aligned letters, and performing letter spotting, the system is able to bootstrap a rapid semi-automatic transcription of the remaining text. Thus, the amount of manual work is greatly diminished and the transcript alignment task becomes practical regardless of the corpus size.

'This paper is devoted to three problems regarding the lost Codex Veronensis (V), from which all manuscripts of Catullus famously descend.
  First, it studies the problem of the identity of the Codex Veronensis. Our only piece of direct evidence for its existence is an epigram by Benvenuto dei Campesati that celebrates the "resurrection" of Catullus, that is, the triumphant return of a copy of his poems to his hometown Verona. Most recent scholars have taken this enigmatic epigram to refer to the archetype of the tradition, and they have accepted Campesani's claim that it actually returned to Verona; but both the identification of the manuscript with the archetype and the truthfulness of Campesani's statement have been called into question. This paper argues that the majority view is very likely correct.
  The second part of the paper touches on the notorious problem whether all of Catullus' humanistic manuscripts descend from the Codex Veronensis. It offers evidence that the 'base text' of all of them descends from the lost sub-subarchetype X. However, this evidence does not enable us to eliminate the possibility of contamination from a source not descended from V.
  The third part of the paper puts to the test the old hypothesis that the exceptionally bad quality of the manuscripts of Catullus can be ascribed to V, or at any rate to a very late stage of the transmission. It offers proof that the text started to be damaged extensively at an early date, very likely already in Antiquity.'

These primitive inks' main component was soot or smoke black, mixed with some agglutinating substance. This black ink is chemically very stable, but is easily washed off from parchment. Therefore, Medieval writers and copyists preferred another sort of black ink, known as metallo-acid ink or gallnuts ink. Metallo-acid ink works well on parchment, but its acidity can damage parchment. In fact, much European written heritage is endangered because of the metallo-acid inks' damaging many manuscripts.

Eine ganze Menge der aus der Bibliotheca Corviniana bekannten Werke waren bis zum Tod Matthias’ nicht im Druck erschienen. In der Mehrzahl beinhalten die Corvinen nicht die uns heute bekannten, vollständigen Texte. Unsere Aufgabe ist es, die Qualität der Texte, welche die lateinischen Übersetzungen griechischer Autoren enthalten, zu analysieren und zu präsentieren. Diese Analyse darf aber nicht durch Vergleich mit den heute bekannten Texten (editiones criticae), sondern anhand einer Nebeneinanderstellung mit den damals zugänglichen Handschriften und Inkunabeln vorgenommen werden.
Ein Viertel der erhalten gebliebenen authentischen Corvinen (216) enthält Übersetzungen griechischer Autoren ins Lateinische. In 57 Handschriften befinden sich Opera der klassischen griechischen, der griechisch-patristischen und der byzantinischen Literatur. Die ca. 100 Werke von 46 Autoren wurden von 32 Gelehrten ins Lateinische übersetzt.

The article proposes a paleographical and bibliological study of some of the oldest Latin books containing works of Cicero, Sallust and Gellius, with the aim of deepening, as far as possible, the production and reception contexts of these witnesses, as well as the role they played in the history of the tradition.

In the year 1900, inside the Qubbat al-khazna (the Umayyad Great Mosque courtyard), an important discovery was made: there were found documents related to the very same mosque, certificates of pilgrimage to Mecca, Qur’anic fragments, Arabic and Turkish literary texts, parchment fragments in Latin language and script, as well as Latin fragments in Greek script, fragments in old French, Hebrew (also Samaritan texts), Armenian, Coptic, Syriac, Aramaic, as well as in Greek – attested both in Greek language and script and in Arabic language and Greek script. The entire ensemble of manuscripts dates back to the period spanning from the Late Antiquity to Modern times.
The aim of the paper is to shed light on the circumstances of this discovery – whose consistency and fate are often ignored or misread – and to offer a comprehensive outline of the materials found. In particular, some early Qur’anic fragments, which were a part of that find, will be presented and their palaeographical and codicological peculiarities highlighted.

Many of the 24 articles (in English, German and French) gathered in this book were provided in honour of the 60th birthday of Professor Erich Renhart, founder of the Vestigia Manuscript Research Centre of the University of Graz. Other articles were written in connection with the diverse researches conducted at Vestigia on the traces of the cultural heritage represented by Armenian, Syriac, Arabic, Greek, Latin, and Croatian Glagolitic manuscript traditions, scattered in libraries around the world. Organized according to these main sections – Text Editions, Manuscript Cataloguing, Manuscript Studies, Digital Humanities, Varia Studia – the volume provides new approaches and results to the study of written heritage in different cultures, as well as digital solutions to preserve and study this heritage codicologically and paleographically. The book is concluded by a final chapter Ad personam, presenting the personal words and a Laudatio addressed to Erich Renhart on the occasion of his 60th birthday celebration (23–24, May 2019) at the University of Graz. Many illustrations and images facilitate the understanding and altogether contribute to the high aesthetic standard of the work – corresponding to its subject matter.

The studies of survival and use of early Christian Apocrypha in the Middle Ages have not occupied substantial attention of scholars. While focusing on the early church, scholars working on marginal scriptures followed little what happened in the post-400 era. The literature deficiency on this subject generated an impression that these writings disappeared after this period; it is far from the truth. An apocryphal text that deserves the attention first and foremost by its subject, the most prominent figure in Christianity – Jesus – is a second-century Christian story about his childhood, the Infancy Gospel of Thomas. The story comprises a series of episodes in which Jesus, a "terrible child," works miracles, kills, and blinds other children and adults. The Infancy Gospel of Thomas survived the late antique period when it was translated in many languages and many textual versions. Medieval copyists and translators felt free to transform, appropriate, and reformulate it. This book discusses the transformations of the Infancy Gospel of Thomas in different medieval periods and places. The text survived and had a voice in the massive transfers of ideas and mentalities that shaped medieval minds in the East and the West.

A study of two leaves from an illuminated 12th-13th century Latin bible formerly Phillipps 2506 / Chester Beatty W. MS 173, now Melbourne University 1975.0099 and 1975.0100. Aspects examined include rulings, decoration, the text, punctuation and diacritics, scribal corrections, letter shapes, abbreviations, and the provenance of the leaves. There are links to photographs of these and other leaves from the same bible.

The present paper wants to offer a new direct and critical study of the titles, divisions, and chapters of the Περὶ ἀρχῶν in the Latin manuscript tradition. Hence, it is a chapter focused on Origen’s reception in the Latin tradition.
What do these data contribute to the understanding of the structure of this work? Fundamentally, we can sum this up in three conclusions. Firstly, the great majority of the titles do not proceed from Rufinus, and, much less, from Origen. Secondly, the contents of a given section should not be judged by the title that heads it, which is very important for its interpretation. And finally, freed from some artificial divisions and titles, it is possible to understand better the structure of De principiis.

February 2022 Update. This paper examines the historical evidence and context of the Heavenly and Earthy Witnesses (i.e.”Johannine Comma”). All sources are given in their original language with English translations. Herein is presented the evidence and historical evidence supporting the Heavenly and Earthly Witnesses throughout Christendom for 1500 years. Christians can review this information and this evidence and with prayer and the leading of the Spirit decide for themselves. Also, with the original languages other questions and criticisms can be judged in the full light of day. Others who may be interested can experience the wealth of Christian Witnesses together with unique historical events that verify these verses of Scripture.

Early medieval manuscripts were commonly annotated not only by glosses but also by annotation symbols. These graphic signs inserted in manuscript margins provided manuscript text with layers of additional meaning and functionality. From the most common signs marking biblical quotations and passages of interest to the sophisticated systems of signs used by some of the early medieval scholars, annotation symbols represent perhaps the most common form of marginalia encountered in early medieval books. Yet, their non-verbal character proved a serious obstacle to their understanding and appreciation.

This book represents the first systematic study of annotation symbols used in the Latin West between c. 400 and c. 900. Combining paleographic evidence with the evidence of written sources such as late antique and early medieval lists of signs, this book identifies the most important communities of sign users and conventions in use in the early Middle Ages. It explores some of the notable differences between regions, periods, linguistic communities and classes of users and reconstructs a fascinating history of the practice of using signs, rather than words, to annotate text. Those who work with early medieval manuscripts will, furthermore, find this book to be a practical handbook of the most common annotation symbols attested in early medieval Western manuscripts or discussed in ancient and medieval sources.

Recent decades have seen increasing interest in research on multilingual and multicultural societies, especially of the ancient world, but also of the Middle Ages. Until now, this flourishing manuscript tradition has been studied almost exclusively by segments and by disciplines that do not always allow a comprehensive understanding of the manuscripts and their multigraphic and multilingual contexts.
This volume deals with the evidence from manuscripts and handwritten documents with multilingual and multigraphic structures in Arabic, Hebrew, Latin and Greek, conceived and designed to display texts in different languages or scripts, as well as addressing the historical context of these testimonia (their production, use and circulation) and focusing on problems inherent to multicultural societies.

The Abbey of St. Gallen was the foremost centre for the study of the Etymologiae of Isidore of Seville in the Carolingian period. Not only can more than twenty early medieval manuscripts transmitting material from the Etymologiaebe associated with Carolingian St. Gallen, but its scriptorium also produced two scholarly redactions of Isidore’s encyclopaedia in the second half of the ninth century. The prototype codices of these two redactions survive today in Swiss libraries, one as Zofingen, Stadtbibliothek, Pa 32, the other as St. Gallen,Stiftsbibliothek, MS 231 – 232. The first redaction represents an attemptto enrich the Etymologiae by incorporating Isidore’s De natura rerum into the encyclopaedia. The second redaction is the result of a collation of four sets of manuscripts of the Etymologiae, some of which survive today and bear collationmarks and variant readings inserted into the margins. While none of the many hands that were involved in the collation and copying of the two redactions can be attributed to any of the known scholars active at St. Gallen in the ninth century, the redactions seem to have been produced over the course of several decades under the auspices of the praepositus and later abbot Hartmut.

Pietro Speziale was a grammaticae professor in Cittadella, in the countryside of Pad-ua. He practiced the profession until the October 1542, when he was arrested and taken to the Venetian prisons on charges of heresy: he was accused to defend some common the-ological propositions among the followers of the Lutheran doctrine. But Speziale's dissent was not only theological: it was also a political, social and customary dissent. Traces of his positions can be found in his unpublished work, Satyrae seu Sermones. The manu-script consists of 67 hexameter compositions, divided into three books (cc. 54r-v), and it can be considered as an important historical source to understand not only Speziale’s compositional skills, but also his overview on the most important events of the tumultuous 16th century. In this contribution, the Author proposes a general reading of the work, identifying the themes and the resonances on a selection of satires. In the Appendix, the Author provides the first hexameters of each composition, with the aim of constituting an Incipitarium useful for the interdisciplinary researches of historians, philologists and Italianists.

Cette étude prend pour objet un inventaire médiéval conservé aux archives de l’abbaye Saint-Pierre à Gand qui, sous la forme d’un rouleau, présente un certain nombre de caractéristiques uniques (Rijksarchief te Gent, Sint-Pietersabdij, Van Lokeren (= RAG, StP, VL) no 511bis. Platte stukken (circa 1235), rol., per., 1800 x 160 mm., lat.). L’étude paléographique permet d’en attribuer la rédaction au chantre Laurent, en fonction entre c. 1235 et c. 1243. À la suite du premier éditeur du rouleau, P. C. Boeren, les historiens contemporains ont voulu y voir le premier « inventaire, qui concerne une catégorie particulière de chartes, à savoir les actes d’assainteurement ou de constitution de tributaire » de cette abbaye. La question du but réel de la rédaction de l’inventaire ne saurait pourtant être tenue pour résolue.
On a déjà attiré l’attention sur l’absence d’ordre dans la description des quelques deux cents actes enregistrés, à même de refléter la logique et, partant, un projet clairement identifiable, de Laurent. Aucune démarche de classification systématique des documents n’a été entreprise avant leur intégration à l’inventaire, ce qui amène à supposer que cette absence d’« ordre » reflète tout simplement l’enregistrement progressif des documents originaux dans l’ordre de leur extraction du « coffre ». L’inversion de l’ordre chronologique amène à envisager que le compilateur ait tout simplement renversé le contenu de son coffre afin de commencer son travail. L’approche statistique permet de renouveler quelque peu cette hypothèse. Cette méthode permet en effet de mettre en valeur l’accroissement en fin d’inventaire de la proportion de documents tardifs (XIIe et XIIIe siècles), notamment des actes par lesquels les femmes libres se reconnaissent tributaires de l’autel de la Vierge Marie auquel elles se consacrent. Cet accroissement prend tout son relief lorsqu’on le rapproche de la diminution parallèle des actes anciens du Xe–XIe siècles par lesquels les serfs libérés se consacraient à l’autel principal dédié à Saint-Pierre. La majeure partie des consécrations à l’autel de la Vierge était probablement conservée à part du groupe principal des actes concernant les tributaires, d’où leur apparition en bloc à la fin du rouleau. Le désordre apparent de l’inventaire reflète donc au premier chef celui des archives et une lecture statistique de la composition de l’ouvrage permet de dégager des étapes qui sont autant d’aperçus sur l’organisation du « coffre » de l’archiviste.
L’absence de toute démarche systématique hypothéquait la possibilité d’avoir recours efficacement à l’inventaire comme outil de gestion des archives ou des droits du monastère. Au-delà même de ce problème, les simples dimensions physiques de l’œuvre de Laurent (deux mètres de long) la rendaient peu ou prou inutilisable au quotidien. En outre, l’inventaire était certainement très loin d’être complet, la majeure partie des actes antérieurs aux 1235, ayant été écartée pour des raisons qui demeurent à expliquer.
Ces remarques amènent donc à questionner la finalité réelle de l’inventaire du chantre Laurent. Afin d’esquisser une réponse à cette question, on a tenté de retracer plus précisément les étapes du travail de l’auteur. Pour ce faire, on a confronté systématiquement les textes des actes originaux à leur description dans le rouleau, avec des résultats inattendus. En premier lieu, il apparaît clairement que le copiste s’adonna sans passion à sa tâche, multipliant les omissions graves. Dans la composition de son inventaire, il semble s’intéresser en premier lieu aux données susceptibles de permettre d’identifier les personnes évoquées dans les actes. Il est donc possible que davantage qu’un répertoire d’actes, le rouleau ait en fait été conçu comme un recensement des tributaires passés à différentes époques sous le patronage du monastère. Le rouleau amalgame donc deux modes d’enregistrements intimement liés. À côté des actes intégraux interviennent des listes de noms, le primat revenant néanmoins à ces dernières. La pertinence de cette observation trouve une confirmation dans la structure similaire présentée par d’autres compilations monastiques, réalisées dans des couvents proches de Saint-Pierre (abbayes de Saint-Bavon et de Bodelo). Cette observation permet de reposer avec profit la question des objectifs et des motifs de la rédaction de l’inventaire de Laurent.
Il est possible que le rouleau, au-delà de ses fonctions administratives, ait également eu valeur commémorative. En effet, il enregistre les noms de donateurs qui, par l’offrande de leur personne ou de celles de leurs mancipia, sont entrés dans la familia du saint. Les liens entre obituaires (libri memoriales) et livres de donations (libri traditionum) sont bien connues, tandis que la différence est tout à fait convenue. Dans cette hypothèse, il serait parfaitement normal que les noms des tributaires n’apparaissent pas dans les nécrologues du monastère. Enfin, l’intervention, dans la compilation de la liste, du chantre de l’abbaye s’expliquerait au mieux dans ce contexte. Lors des messes commémoratives, les libri traditionum trouvaient place sur l’autel à côté des libri memoriales et le rouleau qui nous intéresse ici pourrait avoir été rédigé dans cette optique.
Néanmoins, l’hypothèse la plus vraisemblable demeure que le rouleau ait été avant tout considéré comme un document administratif. L’intervention de Laurent ne va pas à l’encontre de cette interprétation car dans l’abbaye de Saint-Pierre c’est précisément le chantre qui était en charge de la gestion des tributaires, s’occupant de leur recensement, supervisant les revenus dus par ce groupe et, par conséquent, assurant la production et la conservation des documents les concernant. Pour cette raison, le chantre Laurent, en marge de la rédaction de l’inventaire, « renouvela » divers actes anciens en les recopiant de sa main. Celle-ci se laisse identifier en effet sur quelques documents administratifs relatifs au recensement de tributaires de l’abbaye. Parmi ses documents, citons un second rouleau (rotulus) dont le contenu n’est malheureusement connu qu’indirectement, à travers une référence faite par Laurent à ce document dans l’un des actes qu’il dressa. Par ailleurs, on doit attribuer au chantre la paternité de la majeure partie d’un assez volumineux codex tout aussi énigmatique que l’inventaire, œuvre cette fois conservée jusqu’à nos jours. On y trouve un registre de plusieurs centaines de tronci de tributaires de l’abbaye, spécifiant leur localisation exacte et les taxes dont ils étaient redevables.
La prolifique activité du chantre Laurent malgré la brièveté de son mandat s’explique sans doute au premier chef par sa volonté de remettre de l’ordre au sein du service dont il avait reçu la charge et des archives placées sous sa responsabilité. En revanche, la question de la finalité exacte assignée au rouleau qui a retenu ici notre attention doit demeurer ouverte. Doit-on y voir un document administratif d’un type peu commun, comme un inventaire particulier des actes d’un type donné ou encore une liste de tributaires ayant souhaité se placer sous le patronage du monastère, ou faut-il plutôt admettre que ce document ait eu pour vocation de servir en premier lieu à la commémoration liturgique des individus qui s’y trouvent recensés ?

An uncial manuscript with the shelf-mark I F 120 d, made probably in Italy, stored at the University Library in Wroclaw, is dated palaeographically for the years 440–460. It contains a fragment (CXCVI Olympias – CCXXV Olympias) of the Chronicle of Eusebius of Caesarea, translated into Latin by Saint Jerome. In 1910 this manuscript was extracted from the binding of another manuscript stored in Wroclaw University Library – IV F 10. It is one of the oldest preserved fragments of this work, as well as one of the oldest among all works associated with Saint Jerome. Manuscript I F 120 d is very similar to the second part (ff. 33–145) of the Codex Oxoniensis Bodleianus olim Claramontanus, stored in Oxford at the Bodleian Library, which also includes a larger fragment of the same chronicle.

Le manuscrit Paris, BnF, lat. 12265 des Sententiae de Taion de Saragosse (viie siècle) a été copié dans le scriptorium de Saint-Germain-des-Prés dans la seconde moitié du XVIIe siècle ; l’editio princeps de l’Epistula ad Quiricum Barcinonensem antistitem (prologue des Sententiae), de son côté, a été préparé par Luc d’Achery et Jean Mabillon dans la même institution en 1669. Ces deux témoins semblent avoir utilisé comme modèle le même exemplaire : un manuscrit carolingien appartenant à la célèbre bibliothèque de Jacques-Auguste de Thou (1553-1617), qui n’était pas identifié jusqu’à présent. L’étude du texte permet d’affirmer que ce manuscrit est en fait le manuscrit Paris, BnF, lat.  2306. Ce travail fournit des preuves textuelles, codicologiques et historiques permettant de démontrer cette hypothèse et de déterminer quelles sont les relations exactes de ces deux manuscrits (lat. 2306 et lat. 12265) et l’édition de Mabillon.

La presente tesis doctoral se inserta en la línea de investigación dedicada a la recuperación, interpretación y difusión del patrimonio textual de la Medicina europea, en la cual trabajan grupos de investigadores procedentes de toda Europa. Su naturaleza disciplinar reside en la contribución a la construcción del discurso de otras disciplinas, como la Historia de la Medicina y la Filología Latina.
El tratado objeto de estudio en este proyecto de tesis es la traducción latina del "De simplicibus medicinis" de Galeno (s. II) realizada por Gerardo de Cremona en el siglo XII. Esta obra constituye un componente tan importante para la historia de la Medicina que ha sido traducida a varias lenguas: en el siglo VI, Sergius da Rēš ‘Aynā la ha traducido del griego al siríaco; en el siglo IX, Ḥunayn ibn Iṣhāq hizo lo mismo, pero también una traducción del siríaco al árabe confrontándola con el texto griego (otras versiones del tratado en lengua árabe se atribuyen a al-Biṭrīq (s. VIII) y Ḥubaiš (s. IX)); en el siglo XII Gerardo de Cremona ha traducido los seis primeros libros del árabe al latín utilizando el método "de verbo ad verbum". El último eslabón de esta cadena de traducciones, la de Gerardo de Cremona, el traductor más prolífero de obras científicas (en torno a 71) del siglo XII, es aquella que suscita mayor interés, puesto que recoge las recetas descritas por Galeno, pero con las aportaciones de griegos, siríacos y árabes, no solo en el contenido (efectos terapéuticos de los simples, su modo de aplicación, etc.), sino también en el léxico técnico utilizado, repleto de helenismos y arabismos.
En concreto, en estas páginas se ha llevado a cabo la recuperación del libro VI a través de su edición crítica (la única de la que disponemos actualmente es del año 1490) con su correspondiente aparato crítico, comentario y estudio de la historia del tratado, de modo que el lector actual pueda acercarse al texto más fácilmente y esclarecer todos los problemas que rodean al libro (especialmente con relación a su autoría, hasta ahora puesta en duda) y a la figura de Gerardo: por qué la traducción del libro VI no se completó, por qué no ha sido revisada, por qué solo se conserva en cinco manuscritos tardíos, por qué presenta una mayor diversidad lingüística que la de los otros libros, etc. Todo esto unido al hecho de que los datos sobre la vida y modo de trabajo del Cremonés son escasos y en muchos casos dudosos y que hay también pocos estudios sobre las traducciones latinas realizadas en el ámbito de la Escuela de Traductores de Toledo.

To provide a general notion of Armenian manuscripts, an historical summary of the development of Armenian writing and the production of handwritten books is in order. A century after Armenia was converted to Christianity the native language did not have its own writing system, this was the major incentive to the invention of the Armenian alphabet by the monk Mesrop in the first years of the fifth century with its original thirty-six letter later expanded to thirty-eight.

This article (written in English) will give corrections to the manuscript lists published by Ross (Scriptorium 10, 1956, 127-132), Hahn (Scriptorium 34, 1980, 275-278) and Voorbij (Scriptorium 38, 1984, 116-120) regarding the Latin 'Collatio Alexandri et Dindimi'.
