Portuguese Architecture

Álvaro Siza Vieira's swimming pools at Leça da Palmeira sowed the seeds of a disciplinary intrusion of architecture into the landscape. The topography of the site, wedged between the coastal road to the north of Porto and a cliff facing onto the Atlantic, is carved up, in the manner of Wright, by horizontal concrete dividing walls that, delimiting the paths and the basins of the pools, shape a new landscape.

Num contexto de desequilíbrio entre a oferta e a procura de habitação, de sobrecarga do território e de diminuição do arrojo económico, a reutilização de fogos existentes surge como um caminho inevitável. A compreensão dos mecanismos individuais e colectivos que levam às escolhas, particularmente dos sistemas de hierarquização de valores face à nova-velha-casa contribui para uma leitura mais aprofundada da relação do espaço com a sua ocupação e valores reconhecidos. O objecto de estudo é o Bairro das Colónias, em Lisboa (1930), caracterizado por uma arquitectura doméstica considerada anónima e com baixa intervenção de arquitectos. Durante a última década, neste bairro tem registado uma mudança significativa do seu tecido social, na qual a fixação de jovens famílias é um dos elementos evidentes. A leitura das opções e hierarquizações encontráveis na decisão de viver num dos fogos do bairro – unidades de análise – é o objecto específico da investigação.

Em 1974, na sequência da revolução de Abril, foi criado o Serviço Ambulatório de Apoio Local (SAAL) cujo objectivo era auxiliar as populações com graves carências de habitação na obtenção de uma morada condigna. Incluído na promoção do SAAL foi iniciada a construção do Conjunto Habitacional da Bouça, projecto de Álvaro Siza, correspondendo a uma adaptação de um projecto anterior elaborado para o Fundo de Fomento à Habitação (FFH). O processo de construção é interrompido em 1978, sequente à extinção do SAAL (outubro de 1976) ficando apenas edificada a primeira fase do Conjunto Habitacional da Bouça -58 habitações de um total 131, correspondendo a zonas intermédias e sem acessos definitivos. Em 1999, um quarto de século após o início do projecto original, Álvaro Siza foi convidado para fazer a conclusão da intervenção com a construção dos edifícios em falta e a reabilitação dos edifícios existentes, obra que termina em 2006.

In 1976 José Charters Monteiro involves Rossi in the design of a building included in the Plan for Bairro Bela Vista in Setúbal. The intervention promoted by the Fundo de Fomento da Habitação (FFH) is part of a process that in Portugal has been crucial in the definition of a new approach to the solution of the housing problem. This approach inserts the topic of popular dwellings in the wider issue of city construction. In the same years Gonçalo Byrne realizes the housing project in Casal das Figueiras (1975). Conceived within the social development programs of the Serviço de Apoio Ambulatorio Local (SAAL), this intervention is paradigmatic of the search, carried out by the Portuguese architect, for the expression of an idea strongly related to the territory.
In the introduction to the portuguese edition of L’Architettura della città (1977) José Charters Monteiro states that the real consequences of Rossi’s considerations were not stylistic but conceptual, introducing a global vision of the city and architecture, as profound manifestations of human life. In this context is placed the attention that Rossi reserves to disciplinary fields external to architecture and which the author himself put in evidence in his introductory paper. The theories coming from the fields of geography and history contribute, in fact, to defining the character of design and the study of form, typical of architecture.
This research proposes a comparison in the light of the themes set out focusing on the relationship that, through the project, Rossi establishes with the territory and in particular with the city, identifying points in common and the divergencies with the geographical attitude that characterizes Portuguese architectural culture of the second half of the Twentieth Century.
In Setúbal Rossi designs a large residential building as part of the city and, more specifically, as an integral part of the district, confirming an architectural type linked to the evolving form and to the society to which it belongs. The design solution, deriving from a very precise model that Rossi previously had the opportunity to experiment in the project for the Gallaratese district, becomes a tool for the spatial-temporal investigation of the phenomena that generated it. Despite never actually being realised, Rossi’s project offers itself as an element of confirmation of the theories on the reading of the place fielded by the architect and as an element of comparison with the contemporary Portuguese experiences.
The investigation on the project for Setúbal takes place through the analysis of the documents kept in the archive of the Center Canadien d’Architecture and through the interviews taken with José Charters Monteiro and Gonçalo Byrne, aimed at shedding light on the development of Rossi’s proposal and on the relationship between architecture and geography as an important part of his theories and his works.

This article aims to report partial results of the research that analyzes three processes of archeology, metamorphosis
and inflection, apparently very radical, occurred in the career of the Portuguese architect Álvaro Siza (1933),
between the years of 1966 and 1998. It is possible to perceive that the full professional trajectory of the Portuguese
architect presents three special deviations in his design strategies. These most significant inflections appeared to
have occurred in three moments: the first in the mid-1960’s, when the architect abandoned the reference to
vernacular and the "Survey of Portuguese Architecture", the second occurs when he assumes "figurative aspects" in
his work in the 1980’s and the third when it leaves the practice of "sculpture to contaminate its architecture" in the
1990’s. The object of study was composed of three sets of projects constructed and not built, kindly provided by the
architect's file. These projects were analyzed through historiographic, iconographic and a series of technical visits in
Portugal, Spain and Brazil. The main contribution of this article is the explanation of the method of analysis that
contemplates the systematization of a set of projects for the identification of three more radical inflections in the
work of architect Álvaro Siza, in time’s interval researched. The establishment of relations between constructed and
non-constructed projects indicated that the three most radical project deviations had, as a special reference, some
experiments in their own previous work, which underwent a process of updating and metamorphosis in new contexts
and new programs. The work presents the relevance of memory, accumulation of influences and previous
experiences in the design process of the architect Álvaro Siza.

A génese dos primeiros modelos de templos surgidos logo antes ou na sequência imediata das resoluções do Concílio de Trento (1545-1563), de concepção já adequada a uma liturgia e culto reformados, constituem uma das questões mais importantes da história da arquitectura do período moderno. A situação portuguesa não é excepção e constitui, aliás, um caso de estudo de particular interesse e relevância mesmo a nível europeu, pelo impacto produzido no seu espaço continental e ultramarino. Em discussão estará o papel da Companhia de Jesus no surgimento precoce de um modelo de raiz nacional, periférico em relação à realidade artística itálica, e a importação de formas e linguagens deste contexto e o seu reflexo na formação de um italianismo português igualmente de grande fortuna na nossa arquitectura religiosa.

O antigo mosteiro cisterciense de N.ª Senhora do Desterro, apesar das vicissitudes que sofreu e da obscuridade em que permaneceu a história da sua construção permanece, ainda hoje, como um marco arquitectónico fundamental na imagem da cidade de Lisboa. Em boa parte poupado pelo Terramoto, os estragos a que foi sujeito desde o final do séc. XIX ao início do XX, devem-se sobretudo à acção humana. Décadas de incúria e delapidações sucessivas, conduziram a uma descaracterização progressiva a que não foi também alheia a própria transformação em hospital, traduzida em alterações profundas de adaptação pouco adequadas ao edifício.
Contudo, bem longe da imagem que vulgarmente dele se transmite, o antigo Mosteiro do Desterro constitui, apesar do estado fragmentário a que chegou aos nossos dias, um raro testemunho da nossa mais qualificada arquitectura tardo-clássica, fazendo parte dos grandes complexos monástico-conventuais construídos no período filipino (1580-1640).
O presente artigo pretende, além de comprovar a autoria do arquitecto Baltazar Álvares, dar a conhecer, a partir das fontes documentais, o processo construtivo do mosteiro e alguns aspectos desconhecidos do seu projecto. Nomeadamente, as influências da traça erudita da fachada (derivada de um desenho de Rafael para a Villa Madama incluído no tratado de Serlio) e as características peculiares dos espaços monásticos, como os claustros, impostas pela topografia acidentada do terreno.

This presentation will focus on the slight metamorphoses of architectural discourse accompanying the Portuguese political and social context in the last six decades, and how the concept of Portuguese Plain Architecture [PPA] as defined by the American art historian George Kubler (1912-1996) plays a role in this progression.
The Portuguese architect Duarte Cabral de Mello (1941-2013) compared the understated character ofVítor Figueiredo’s (1924-2004) architecture with the essential nature of Portuguese Plain Architecture (Mello 1979). Kubler’s thesis implied that the nature of Portuguese architecture built between 1600 and 1800 did not fit in any of the established categories of art history, and thus was an appropriate case study to demonstrate the thesis that Kubler had already put forward in his book The Shape ofTime (1962): “... no style or class excludes the simultaneous possible presence of many other prior classes” (Kubler 1972, 4).

Historicamente, em Portugal, a arquitectura de museus sempre esteve ligada à reabilitação de património. Contudo, os processos de apropriação de estruturas preexistentes evoluíram no tempo, à medida que o próprio conceito de património se alterou e expandiu. Novas tipologias, novos enquadramentos e novas funções levaram, assim, a outros projectos. Depois de um período marcado por grandes campanhas de obras em alguns dos principais museus nacionais, na viragem para o século XXI assistiu-se a uma maior amplitude patrimonial e geográfica das intervenções, o que criou novos pontos de referência no território. Em muitos casos, o programa e a proposta arquitectónica convergiram para o tema da paisagem, redesenhando lugares que são hoje sinalizados e, também, reinterpretados por cartografias digitais.

Scritto nel 1962 per il conseguimento della cattedra universitaria, Dell’organizzazione dello spazio va ben al di là della contingenza accademica e pone il tema dello spazio alla base di un’indagine sul complesso sistema di relazioni che intercorrono tra architettura e città, architetto e uomo. “Ogni uomo crea forma, organizza il suo spazio. E se le forme sono condizionate dalla circostanza”, scrive infatti Távora, “allo stesso modo esse producono circostanza, o, in altre parole, l’organizzazione dello spazio, che è condizionata, si trova a diventare fattore condizionante”. Al problema della generazione e della metamorfosi delle forme si accosta qui quello della dimensione spazio-temporale, che apre il campo da un lato a una serie di questioni relative alla percezione e al movimento, dall’altro all’analisi di aspetti sociali, politici e culturali da cui l’architettura non può prescindere. Attraverso l’analisi di casi concreti Távora restituisce, in tutta la sua peculiarità e vivacità, il clima culturale portoghese alle soglie dell’ultimo decennio di dittatura, ma soprattutto delinea un’idea di architettura come “attitudine alla visione globale dei fenomeni dello spazio”, “opera collettiva di partecipazione”, persino “creazione di felicità”.

Portugal and Azerbaijan had a strong Islamic influence in the past. Even nowadays, we can experience signs of this cultural heritage, and the tangible and intangible impact in both countries. It is noticeable in many areas likewise in architecture. 
In Portugal, despite many examples of Islamic heritage influence have been lost or destroyed, there still are in some particular cities a remarkable architecture and ornamentation legacy.  On the other hand, the situation in Azerbaijan is slightly different due to the fact that the majority of Azerbaijan’s population is Muslim. Therefore, there are still many living examples of Islamic geometric motifs in architecture and eventually, a living tradition. 
The present dissertation is part of an ongoing research project entitled “Biomimetics and Digital Morphogenesis” enrolled at the CIAUD Research Centre of the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Lisbon.
The main focus of this work will be given to girih - a particular geometric pattern used in Islamic decoration, which can be found in a wide area from Portugal to Azerbaijan. The geometric patterns in Portugal were used mainly in “azulejos”, "alfarge" and some stucco works, while in Azerbaijan, they are employed in different manners of designing mainly stone decorations and glass decorations on "shebeke" (an art of creating windows consisting of colorful glass and small wooden details attached without glue or nail using). 
Nevertheless, all of the decorative elements deployed use a range of symmetries that have now been classified as belonging to distinct mathematical groups. But the subtlety and beauty of the designs are unparalleled in modern mathematical thinking and design.
Thus, our goal is to try to establish a relationship between the survey examples of Islamic geometric patterns in Portugal and Azerbaijan; to assemble a parallel between those decorative elements in both countries; and try to establish if there are some connections, similarities and the levels of correspondence.

O Parque Residencial da Boavista, na cidade do Porto, também conhecido por Foco (levando o nome do cinema) e por Graham (evocando o nome da pré-existência que veio substituir), constitui um testemunho ímpar de arquitectura e urbanismo modernos em Portugal, promovido, construído e publicitado pela Sociedade de Construções William Graham S.A.R.L., em articulação com o Banco Português do Atlântico. Idealizado por Agostinho Ricca (1915-2010) no início da década de 1960, o centro cívico ali construído, com João Serôdio (1932-) e Magalhães Carneiro (1935-), à imagem de experiências europeias congéneres, organiza-se em torno de um amplo espaço central ajardinado e agrega um amplo e variado programa habitacional (com mais de 450 fogos) e diferentes serviços complementares - igreja, cinema estúdio ‘Foco’, hotel, restaurante, piscinas, clube residencial, galerias comerciais e escritórios - sempre numa linguagem unitária, criteriosamente distribuídos e articulados pelo desenho do espaço público.
O conjunto urbano é enriquecido por obras de artistas plásticos tais como Júlio Resende (1917-), Zulmiro de Carvalho (1940-), José Rodrigues (1936 -2016), e João Charters de Almeida (1935-).

A diversidade do território português, quer em termos geográficos, quer em termos populacionais, confere à arquitectura, especialmente à da moradia nobre e senhorial, características bem distintas. Estas diferenças manifestam-se em gramáticas decorativas e estruturas arquitectónicas, próprias de cada uma das diversas regiões do nosso país. A partir dos diversos estudos e pesquisas conseguimos distinguir traços “regionais” identificativos da forma de construção da casa nobre e senhorial.
A zona Centro, ocupando toda a área que se alarga do Douro ao Tejo e do litoral à fronteira, engloba uma grande heterogeneidade geográfica que se projecta também na diversidade arquitectónica que origina, como que reunindo um pouco de tudo aquilo que caracteriza este tipo de construções de norte a Sul do país. Desde as quintas e casas de teor erudito na zona de Coimbra, até às casas-torre do interior, de gramática decorativa barroca.
Citando o Professor Dr. Jaime Ferreira-Alves, “A casa nobre em Portugal, cuja história fascinante é para o historiador da arte um vasto campo de pesquisa, continua a ser, na maior parte dos casos, pouco conhecida”. Afirmação, por certo, tão verdadeira para o plano nacional quanto o é ainda mais no caso de Aveiro pois que, neste caso em particular, se consegue distinguir, diremos, uma certa originalidade construtiva. 
    Nas suas “Notas Históricas” sobre Aveiro, João Gonçalves Gaspar afirma que “É muito singular e característico que em Aveiro sejam tão raros os vestígios de casas nobres.” Efectivamente, esta é uma observação que comummente fazemos, quando vemos a actual cidade e, se à primeira vista, poderíamos pensar que sempre assim fora, com um pouco mais de atenção verificaríamos que tal aparente evidência é enganadora. Olhámos pois com mais atenção a cidade e tentámos ver, para além do imediato.
Neste pressuposto, propomo-nos apresentar um esboço de tipologia daquilo que julgamos poder classificar como a casa nobre de Aveiro e de toda a sua zona envolvente. De características muito marcadas e particulares, esta tipologia distingue na região, a construção deste género de habitação, apresentando-se como um “modelo” adoptado, e bem-sucedido, porque aplicado quase na generalidade das construções das suas habitações, por um mesmo estrato social; nobre, influente e detentor de poder económico.

O Colégio jesuíta de S.to Antão-o-Novo foi um dos maiores empreendimentos arquitectónicos da centúria de Seiscentos, tendo o seu risco conhecido várias alterações no período filipino, no sentido de um classicismo monumental italianizante, próximo do modelo de S. Vicente de Fora. Com o patrocínio de D. Filipa de Sá, a igreja foi erguida entre 1612 e 1658, embora partes do exterior ficassem por terminar até ao séc. XVIII. Este artigo procura atestar a autoria projectual de Baltazar Álvares e esclarecer a direcção da obra que ficou a cargo de um dos seus discípulos, Diogo Marques Lucas. As questões associadas ao estatuto profissional dos arquitectos, a par do domínio das regras clássicas da arquitectura do tempo, são aspectos que transparecem da documentação inédita encontrada sobre a fase final da construção da igreja no séc. XVII, quando os contactos informados com centros artísticos externos eram já menos frequentes.

The jesuit college of Santo Antão-o-Novo was one of the largest architectural projects of the 17th century in Portugal. Its design was the object of several amendments during the Philippine period (1580-1640), bringing it closer to the kind of Italian monumental classicism exemplified by the monastery of São Vicente de Fora. Under the patronage of D. Filipa de Sá, the church was built between 1612 and 1658, though parts of the exterior were only concluded in the 18th century. This paper aims to assert Baltazar Álvares’ authorship of the project, while shedding some light on the building works supervision entrusted to one of his disciples, Diogo Marques Lucas. The paper will also consider the professional status of architects and their knowledge of the standards of classical architecture at the time. This analysis will be based on recently uncovered documentation about the final phase of the church’s building works, in the 17th century, at a time when informed contacts with foreign artistic centres had become less frequent.

Nadir Afonso dedicated a large part of his life to the exercise of the profession in which (after all) he graduated - architecture, a fact that even today is often ignored by the general public.

Agostinho Ricca (1915-2010), arquitecto diplomado pela Escola de Belas Artes do Porto em 1941, iniciou a actividade profissional no Porto, reclamando a modernidade que tanto admirava na produção arquitectónica internacional de então. Foi membro fundador do grupo ODAM (Organização dos Arquitectos Modernos), professor na escola onde se formou, e, sempre, incansável viajante e apreciador de música. Nas suas obras lemos o que disse em vida: “Há sempre uma evolução mas os valores e o gosto por uma determinada feição da arquitectura tem-se mantido sempre.”
A vasta produção arquitectónica de Agostinho Ricca estendeu-se da moradia unifamiliar aos grandes conjuntos habitacionais, incluindo também o desenho de equipamentos, serviços e espaço público. Para o Porto, projectou aproximadamente 120 obras, 60 das quais construídas. Deste universo de obras destacamos, pela sua singularidade e importância, a Torre MG Júlio Dinis (1959), o Parque Residencial e a igreja Nossa Senhora da Boavista (1962, 1974-99). Ainda que a sua obra se concentre maioritariamente no Porto, também se estendeu a outras cidades do Norte do país, como Braga e Santo Tirso.
A presente selecção de obras procura relevar parte deste valioso e diversificado legado, idealizado ao longo de 70 anos de actividade profissional: património moderno disperso pela cidade, que urge conhecer, viver, e assim salvaguardar.

Agostinho Ricca (1915-2010), an architect graduated from the Porto School of Fine Arts in 1941, started his professional activity in Porto, claiming the modernity he admired
so much in the international architectural production of that time. He was a founding member of the ODAM (Organization of Modern Architects) group, a teacher at the school where he graduated from, and always a tireless traveler and music lover. In his works we read what he said while alive: “There is always an evolution but the values and the taste for a certain feature of architecture have always been maintained.”
Agostinho Ricca’s vast architectural production extended from single-family housing to large housing estates, including designing equipment, services and public space. For Porto, he designed approximately 120 works, 60 of which were built. From this universe of works, we highlight, for its uniqueness and importance, the MG Júlio Dinis Tower (1959), the Residential Park and the Nossa Senhora da Boavista Church (1962, 1974-99). Although his work is mainly concentrated in Porto, it also extended to other cities in the north of the country, such as Braga and Santo Tirso.
This selection of works seeks to highlight part of this valuable and diverse legacy, created over 70 years of professional activity: modern heritage scattered throughout the city, which is urgent to know, live, and thus safeguard.

Preceduto da saggi introduttivi e contributi sulle singole opere, il terzo e ultimo dei volumi su L’architettura della villa moderna descrive gli anni durante i quali la riscrittura degli etimi moderni dell’architettura avviene sia attraverso il recupero dei linguaggi locali e di quelli legati alla tradizione che attraverso la riproposizione di schemi legati alle avanguardie del primo Novecento.
Caratteristica essenziale dell’opera, come nei primi due volumi, è il ri-disegno alla stessa scala di un gran numero di ville del periodo, permettendo al lettore la comparazione non solo compositiva, linguistica o tecnologica, ma anche dimensionale delle singole abitazioni, rendendo evidenti sia i congegni distributivi che le innovazioni concettuali. La casistica estremamente ampia di exempla permette non solo di seguire tutte le evoluzioni del tipo all’interno dell’architettura contemporanea, ma anche di avere una sorta di manuale di soluzioni a specifici problemi di progettazione elaborate dai grandi maestri dell’architettura. La raccolta di saggi inediti fornisce poi una serie di approfondimenti su alcune opere o determinati filoni, consentendo letture originali e trasversali che possono risultare di grande interesse per ogni generazione di studiosi.

This paper aims at presenting an interdisciplinary reflection about the public disclosure of some documentary collections nowadays kept under the custody of Portuguese libraries, archives and museums, and its relevance for the purposes of investigation on Architecture History related to architectural heritage studies. The approach relies on concrete examples selected from the research we have been doing about the architectural treatises of the 15th to 17th centuries, mostly from a survey on its presence in Portuguese institutions, and from a broader study on its influence over the Portuguese architecture from de Renaissance onwards. In this context, the paper will describe the significance of the treatises to inquiry the architectural heritage at different levels: the diffusion of general ideas regarding architecture (including urbanism); the provision of visual suggestions to urban façades; the supply of formal models for buildings (typological and decorative); the sharpening of the critical sense both of architects and clients. Such an approach will contribute also to suggest the relevance of some documentary collections gathered from extinct libraries (private, royal or monastic) presently kept by Portuguese institutions - places where one can find valuable information to better understand the extent of the cultural influence of the architectural treatises over particular communities and regions, or at specific historical moments.

The Japanese way of building and inhabiting – deeply rooted in a secular tradition, but manifesting innovative solutions – has decisively influenced many Western authors.
Regarding Portuguese context, modernity was appropriated through different moments and, lastly, through a late stage of reflexion that searched for its own unique identity. This Portuguese critical spirit which (...)

High performance glass and Trombe
walls in the façade was studied in this
research. The paper reports results of an
ongoing investigation on a new façade
system concept, designed as: “Façade
Modules for Eco-Eficient Refurbishment
of Buildings”, especially on energy ef! -
ciency of Trombe wall and glazing modules
arrangement. Computational simulation
was carried out by using the software
DesignBuilder. Two double glazing types
and Trombe walls were considered for
three different climates in Portugal and
four solar orientations. Results obtained
for heating energy needs were compared
to all façade con! gurations. The use of
Trombe wall and the double self-cleaning
glass in the façade point towards a
signi! cant decrease of heating energy
needs. The great majority of the façades
combinations presented energy needs
lower than the maximum allowed by the
Portuguese regulation (RCCTE).

Portugal, después de un siglo XIX lleno de agitación y cambios, de invasiones napoleónicas y huidas reales, entra en el siglo XX sustituyendo a la monárquica por una república (1910). No siendo la República capaz de traer al país ya a sus ciudadanos la estabilidad y el desarrollo deseados, es atacada por una primera y corta dictadura militar (1917). El país vuelve, un año después, a la frágil república parlamentaria. Peros pocos años más aguantaría este sistema político. En 1926, Portugal sufre otro golpe militar, dando origen, entonces, a la larga dictadura de Oliveira Salazar y a los más de cuarenta años del Estado Novo. No es hasta la primavera de 1974, en la inolvidable madrugada del 25 de abril, con la Revolución de los Claveles, que Portugal vuelve a tener derecho de vivir en democracia. Enfoquemos, en los años 1960, marco cronológico escogido para esta presentación. La opción por esta década no es fortuita. Mirando la historia de la realidad portuguesa en general, y de la arquitectónica y urbana en especial, es posible identificar en estos años que alguna modernidad, o deseo de ella, va llegando efectivamente a este periférico pedazo de Europa.

O 'caderno de viagem' é uma das práticas continuadas de formação da nossa escola cuja criação está intimamente ligada com a História da Arquitectura Portuguesa da FAUP, concebida por Alexandre Alves Costa. O caderno de viagem faz-se em experiência directa com as obras, visitando os lugares da Arquitectura Portuguesa do tempo longo, através do desenho. A realização do caderno tem como objectivo o estudo de obras sugerindo um método de aprendizagem que acontece pelo despertar dos sentidos. Este exercício prático entende-se como potencial construtor de memórias e como terra fértil que lança raízes para futuras práticas de Arquitectura. Propomos nesta sessão viajar pelo nosso território, revisitando desenhos e memórias.

""Franciscan buildings of the Origins for the Portuguese Strictest Observance communities in the 16th century: the lesson from Vitruvius"

"The Franciscan church of Bom Jesus de Valverde (Évora) is one of the highest accomplishments of the Portuguese architecture inspired by Renaissance treatises during the early 16th century. It contrasts with other contemporary buildings erected for the Strictest Observance (for instance, the convents of Arrábida or Santa Cruz de Sintra), opposing its erudite geometry to a raw use of poor materials assembled in organic, haphazard plans.
Considering that no significant differences of spiritual or cultural context assisted the formulation of both types of architecture, this paper aims at inquiring the possible theoretical agreement between them. This agreement is found in the treatise "De Architectura" by Vitruvius, namely in the main narrative on the Origins of Architecture. The lesson from Vitruvius is suggested to have been learned both from his historical approach to the development of the art of building, and the formulation of the disciplinary object under an epistemological perspective. The implications of some of the Vitruvian fundamental terms – "distributio", "symmetria", and "decor" – are also taken into account to clarify how the Vitruvian text could possibly have been understood in the light of the Strictest Observant lifestyle and spiritual ideals.""
