Senior Citizens

In this article, we first outline the rationale for engaging seniors, before listing a series of examples and case studies from Portugal and beyond, showing the different ways this can be done. In a final section, we share lessons learnt and recommendations. We hope that this article will serve as a source of ideas, examples, opportunities and, most important, good practices that science centres and museums should be aware of when considering the elderly as a target audience.

À partir d’une approche combinant sociologie des usages d’internet et gérontologie critique, le but de cette thèse est d’abord de montrer que le contexte sociohistorique de ces dernières décennies, qui a vu apparaître des représentations positives de la vieillesse, à travers l’émergence du « troisième âge » puis de la figure du « senior » dynamique, a conduit au renouvellement des normes sociales concernant les adultes âgés. Dans la continuité des prescriptions plus anciennes du « vieillissement réussi », l’incitation est désormais forte, pour lutter contre le « déclin » associé au vieillissement, de mener un mode de vie à la fois actif et connecté. Ce travail cherche ensuite à montrer comment les usages des technologies numériques de l’information et de la communication (TNIC) par les adultes âgés sont informés par ces représentations, et inversement. Pour cela, une enquête s’appuyant sur des matériaux variés a été mise en place, incluant des entretiens avec des personnes de 62 à 82 ans, des observations ethnographiques dans des cours d’initiation à l’informatique proposés par des associations de retraités, et enfin l’analyse d’un corpus de sites web de sociabilité pour « seniors ».
Il s’avère que les usages sociaux des TNIC et leurs représentations accompagnent des processus de définition identitaire complexes pour le groupe social des adultes âgés. Leur forme varie en fonction de l’orientation des institutions (commerciales ou associatives) qui portent les discours du « bien-vieillir connecté » et des publics auxquels elles s’adressent, ainsi que de la trajectoire et de l’appartenance en termes de génération, de genre et de classe des individus. Néanmoins, ces injonctions normatives font l’objet d’appropriation variées ; et par leurs pratiques et leurs aspirations, les adultes âgés peuvent aussi contribuer à les renforcer. En outre, si le mode de vie actif et connecté est plutôt l’apanage des classes moyennes et supérieures, on observe aussi des points communs dans la relation que les adultes âgés dans leur ensemble entretiennent avec les TNIC, s’expliquant par l’expérience partagée de la retraite et de la condition de personne vieillissante dans une société de plus en plus « numérisée ».

Grounded in an approach that combines sociology of internet use and critical gerontology, the goal of this thesis is to demonstrate that the socio-historic context of the last decades, where more positive representations of aging appeared – starting with the emergence of the “Third Age” and resulting in the contemporary figure of the dynamic “senior” – led to the renewal of social norms concerning older adults. Building on the already existing ideal of “successful aging”, the pressure of resisting the “decline” associated with old age continues to grow, mandating the development of both an active and connected lifestyle. This study then analyses how social uses of digital technologies by older adults are influenced by those cultural representations, and vice versa. To this end, a methodology based on the collection of various empirical elements has been built; it includes semi-structured interviews with individuals from 62 to 82 years old; ethnographic observation in computer classes offered by associations for retired people; and the analysis of several websites specialized in the development of “senior” sociability.
It appears that digital technologies’ uses and representations help shape the complex construction of the identity of older adults, both as individuals and as a social group. These identities can vary depending on the type of institutions (commercial or non-profit) that promote discourses of “connected successful aging”, and on the profile of the public they target, but may also be affected by an individual’s social trajectory, generation, class and gender. Nevertheless, those social norms are interpreted and adapted in various ways; and through their practices and aspirations, older adults themselves can contribute to reinforcing them. Moreover, although the “connected” and active lifestyle is more likely to be applied by older people coming from the middle and upper class, the data collected revealed some common features in the attitudes and perceptions towards digital media of older adults, explained by their shared experience of being both a retired and aging person in an increasingly digitalized environment.

La Silver Economie est à la fois la filière économique française la plus jeune et l’une de celles ayant le plus fort potentiel de développement et d’innovations, tant technologiques que sociales. Rappelons que la Silver économie prend son essor dans un environnement particulièrement favorable avec la hausse continue du nombre de seniors (25 % de la population aujourd’hui, 35% demain). Répartie par grandes thématiques, les 60 entretiens, qui forment la colonne vertébrale de cet ouvrage, sont autant de témoignages d’un secteur en plein bouillonnement. Ces 60 rendez-vous montrent la diversité des stratégies mises en œuvre par des acteurs aux profils particulièrement divers. L’ouvrage, qui croise le regard d’un chef d’entreprise reconnu dans le monde de la Silver économie et d’un sociologue expert de la société de la longévité, propose la première approche analytique et concrète de la SIlver économie. Les auteurs mettent en avant les limites du développement du secteur si trop d'acteurs prennent insuffisamment en compte les usages et désirs des publics visés.

O relatório estrutura-se em três partes: “1- Conceitos e Definições”, “2- Levantamento dos Empreendimentos Existentes na Grande Lisboa” e “3- Estudos de Caso”.

Na primeira parte pretende-se enquadrar o tema, bem como todo o léxico técnico a ele associado, quer a nível nacional quer internacional. De facto a profusão de denominações e variantes usadas para designar o mesmo tipo de alojamento e serviços associados corresponde sobretudo a questões de marketing que dificultam no entanto a sua análise e comparação. Isto deve-se muito ao facto das residências assistidas serem um modelo habitacional recente em Portugal (e internacionalmente), ainda em processo de configuração tipológica e funcional, sem tradição estabilizada nem regulamentação de enquadramento.

Na segunda parte, pretendemos inventariar todos os empreendimentos existentes na área da Grande Lisboa, por forma a traçar um cenário da realidade deste tipo de habitação. Optámos por esta delimitação territorial para confinar o tema à área geográfica prevista no plano de tese de Doutoramento, bem como por razões operacionais. De facto, a Grande Lisboa, ao constituir em termos de administração territorial estatística uma NUTSIII  formada por 8 concelhos (Amadora, Cascais, Lisboa, Loures, Mafra, Odivelas, Sintra e Vila Franca de Xira) numa área total de 1381 km2, agrega informação técnica e estatística suficiente para permitir um panorama diversificado e abrangente do tema .

A terceira e última parte resulta da análise do “Levantamento”, pelo que seleccionámos três empreendimentos para “Estudos de Caso”, aplicando-lhes uma análise espacio-funcional mais detalhada. Enquanto exemplos representativos da diversidade tipológica (arquitectónica e funcional) patente nas fichas da segunda parte, pretende-se demonstrar que a grelha de análise aplicada a estes três empreendimentos seria passível de utilização nos restantes.

This story opens with the post-disaster setting of "Caiseas Blues" [reprinted in Best Small Fictions, Sonder Press 2020; adapted from an unfinished novel "A Terrible Racket"]. The tale breaks ground in its portrayal of senior sexuality, and its unique use of scripture as an intertext. In a locale in which much of what the characters hold dear has been taken from them, the strange relationship between the matriarch Marta and her invalid husband Gabriel is revealed. Marta plays a God-like role in putting Gabriel, her angel, through the paces. But a chat with her daughter Isabel reveals the cruel irony of hearing everything, but never being able to speak. The epiphany moves Marta to what Gabe interprets as a sort of penance. [CORRECTED--restores unauthorized cuts made by journal from Sections 4-5].

Questo libro analizza il fenomeno del turismo da due prospettive differenti e al tempo stesso convergenti – quella psicologica e quella geografica – contribuendo a costruire conoscenze sistematiche delle due discipline attraverso approcci molteplici. Ne nascono quindi temi e strumenti diversi: dalle motivazioni psicologiche alla declinazione dell’offerta turistica, dall’ambiente e dal paesaggio reali a quelli percepiti.
Oltre che agli studenti universitari, il volume si rivolge a tutti coloro che per la prima volta si avvicinano alla materia: ogni argomento è trattato con un linguaggio semplice ma scientificamente rigoroso, adatto alla comprensione di tutti i lettori. L’esemplificazione avviene attraverso casi emblematici, più o meno noti, per mostrare e dimostrare come si possano adattare, modificare e trasformare, in funzione della domanda dei turisti, i luoghi e, soprattutto, i modi in cui questi sono presentati. Un volume che aiuta a comprendere come valorizzare al meglio una delle risorse più importanti della nostra Italia e della nostra Europa.

This chapter focusses on co-created mobile storytelling examples and case studies that have engaged participants in collaborative processes through most of the production process. While some are more focused on the collaborative nature of production, others emphasise the story more significantly, with each method producing very particular impacts on the production, the producer and the participant. Using case studies from a number of digital storytelling projects including 60+ Online
(McCosker et al., 2018), May Days (Prasad, 2012), Oma’s Applesauce
(Van Genderen, 2020), Grey Matter AR (Vanderborght, 2019) and
The OPERA Project (Bossio et al., 2019a, 2019b), we reflect on the
role of co-design in mobile screen production. Further to this, we also
discuss the impact of co-creation processes during the OPERA Project
(Schleser & Bossio, 2019) on digital and online representation of vulner-
able communities. The project used in-depth co-creation relationships
between researchers, video producers and participants over a long period
of time and we argue that engaging this methodology shifted the conver-
sation from a horizontal to a vertical plane of co-producers and creators.
This allows a conceptual shift to take place (Schleser & Berry, 2018,
p. 2), which results in stories that are told from a community perspective,
rather than an author or auteur focusing on story elements and structures.
The personal stories empower older people to engage with new technolo-
gies by a mix of interest-based learning, co-design storytelling and online
sharing to make a positive contribution to representation of older people
in online and digital spaces. Furthermore, surveys conducted after the
project was completed showed that participants valued the intimate smart-
phone production framework and the extended co-design consultation
phase and community engagement activity, which resulted in partici-
pants’ reporting of increased confidence to use and engage with digital
technologies and modes of online representation.

Background: The issue of grandparents’ support provided to their families is  undertaken in Polish literature very seldom. There are no studies concerning single mother families. The purpose of the article is to examine the extent to which grandparents provide support to grandchildren brought up in single mother families, and determine the relationship between the grandparents’ support and the grandchildren's quality of life. Materials and Methods: The survey data were collected from 119 people from single mother families. The Student's Life Satisfaction Scale SLSS was used to test the quality of life and the Social Support Scale (SWS) was used to test  the strength and type of support from grandparents. Results: Mother's parents are involved in each of the considered types of support in a higher degree than father's parents, regardless of the place of residence of the single mother family. In small towns maternal grandparents provide information support more often than paternal grandparents, maternal grandmothers engage in instrumental aid to grandchildren more often than paternal grandparents. In cases of families living in large cities,  when the paternal grandfather gives instrumental, emotional or evaluative support, grandchildren assess their quality of life significantly better. The assessment of quality of life is also higher in cases of maternal grandfather’s emotional engagement in support for grandchildren. Conclusions: The results suggest that the grandfathers’ (particularly paternal grandfather’s) support in the single mother family is positively connected with quality of life of grandchildren. It can be assumed that supporting grandparents contribute to strengthening the resilience of whole family.

The matriarch Marta plays a god-like role with her mute invalid husband Gabriel. He hears and understands everything, but can say nothing. She takes his silence as tacit permission to make him into a sort of post-disaster version of the "new man." This story explores the ironies of Marta's recreation of Gabriel as her "angel." Gabe's conflicted point of view penetrates the narration. Part 4 of this excerpt from the novel-in-progress "A Terrible Racket" previously appeared in a somewhat different form in the story "Making Do with the Residue."

konsekwencje dla codziennego funkcjonowania rodzin i podstaw ekonomicznych gospodarstw domowych, rynku pracy oraz finansów publicznych. Wraz wydłużaniem się wieku emerytalnego i kurczeniem się liczby miejsc pracy coraz więcej seniorów bywa zostawionych samych sobie, a nawet wręcz wykluczanych
z życia społecznego. Stąd przed rządami państw i przed całymi społecznościami pojawia się konieczność stworzenia warunków mających na celu społeczną integrację ludzi starych, zapewnienie im możliwie szerokiej oferty atrakcyjnych możliwości spędzania czasu wolnego i samorealizacji, ale też zapewnienia godnych świadczeń emerytalnych i dostępu do profesjonalnej opieki
zdrowotnej. Potrzeby ludzi starych, ich podejście do codzienności, relacje z otoczeniem, wykluczenie, formy aktywizacji, sytuacja życiowa, zdrowotna i ekonomiczna stały się więc w ostatnim czasie niezwykle aktualnym problemem badawczym dla badaczy z wielu dyscyplin naukowych. Zagadnieniu starości i starzenia poświęca się coraz więcej miejsca. Niniejsza publikacja wpisuje się w te trendy. Stanowi ona zbiór refleksji i wyników badań naukowych historyków, gerontologów, socjologów, pedagogów i psychologów.
Publikację zamyka tekst poświęcony międzynarodowemu projektowi Edu.Care, którego głównym celem było stworzenie nowego, mobilnego modelu dokształcania/ kształcenia opiekunów współczesnych seniorów.

Abstract
Ageing is a natural phenomenon and an inevitable process in life. Senior citizens are the assets of the society. The objective of this paper is to provide a brief introduction to policy of senior citizen management as it exists in Nepal through secondary data. This article specially examines the policy of Nepal government “senior citizen act 2006.” This act will be taken as base to analyze the policy of senior citizen in Nepal. The major argument of this paper is there are so many policies to uplift the status of senior citizen but lacking part of the implementation with proper strategies are the major challenge in grass root level.

In short, we discovered that the easiest way to become invisible is to be old and gray.  That's it.  Get old and have gray or white hair, and you will be invisible.

This document may aid policy makers and the local government units including CSOs such as Tahanang Mapagpala in yielding good practices and strengthening partnership between CSOs and the local government in general. This could serve as a reference material on whether or not, co-production exists. This will also provide additional knowledge on the current undertakings of organizations such as Tahanang Mapagpala on their initiatives to help in the progress of the society by lending a hand to the government sectors within their area.

This paper aims to:

(a)  To supply the historical narrative of Tahanang Mapagpala ng Immaculada Concepcion Foundation, Inc. an trace probable evidences
of co-production;
(b)  To provide an analysis on the existence and non-existence of co-production by the programs and projects of Tahanang Mapagpala in relation to its partnership with the government at the local level;
(c)  To present the perspective of citizens participation as co-production agents at the local level by citing the case of Tahanang Mapagpala.

The objective of this study was twofold; 1) to explain the significant role of the physical environment in long term care homes to support health and quality of life for senior citizens, and 2) to construct design environment factors that benchmark  long term care accommodation for senior citizens in Malaysia.  After a careful literature review exploring through books, governmental reports, and journals, this paper identified five common attributes pivotal in supporting the health and well-being of the elderly. They are supportive physical environment, residential character, small scale approach, access to support services, and provision of  opportunities for community integration.  Previous researches show that Supportive  Housing  Design (SHD), which is  an option for Long Term Care (LTC), is one of the most beneficial  options as it provides with those attributes to  maximum.  In Malaysia, the study finds that  the existing Malaysian National Policy for the Elderly  does not synchronize the  health and well-being issues of senior citizens with Long Term Care (LTC).  This study implies that such policy should comprehensively consider SHD and derive design codes with respect to the components of SHD for a better quality of life for the senior citizens in the context of Malaysia.

Internet banking is a form of self service technology. The numbers of Internet users have increased dramatically, but most of them are reluctant to provide sensitive personal information to websites because they do not trust e-commerce security. This paper investigates the factors influencing of e-services on senior citizens buying behaviour and also indicates level of concern regarding security and privacy issues in Indian context. Primary data was collected from 200 respondents, above the age of 60, through a structured questionnaire. were used to know trend of internet use and factors affecting e-banking services among senior citizen customer in Bangalore, India. The finding depicts many factors like security & privacy, trust, innovativeness, familiarity, awareness level increase the acceptance of e-banking services among Indian customers. The finding shows that in spite of their security and privacy concern, senior citizen customers are willing to adopt online banking if banks provide him necessary guidance. Based on the results of current study, Bank's managers would segment the market on the basis of age group and take their opinion and will provide them necessary guidance regarding use of online banking.

Ageing is a normal, common, universal and un-avoiding phenomenon. Ageing has threeaspects biological, psychological and social. We are living in this busy world, it is the dutyof each and every young ones to spend a little time for our elders, patient listening, lovingtalks and careful attention can relieve many of the psychological problems. It appears inIndia senior citizens have no right to live a life of dignity. Day by day they are gettingshocks and traumas in one form or other, the past two decades the social scene, due to anumber of factors, had undergone drastic changes with the joint family system breakingdown. Today, nuclear families are the norm. In fact, for most people, growing old is time tobe enjoyed. They mostly ignore the symptoms considering it as the signs of aging.Institutionalized elderly refers to the people above the age of sixty years who live in theinstitution and Non-institutional elderly means who stay in their own house alone, with theirpartner, children, and grandchildren together. The issues and problems are varied in anyplace be it in families or in the institution. It differs from person to person. The researcherscame to know of various problems faced by them. Thus was interested to study the problemsthey face. The scope of the study is restricted to only 50 elderly in Mangalore city. 25respondents are from institutions and 25 from those living in families. The aim is to draw a
comparison between the problems faced by the elderly in each of these places. The
objectives are to assess the problems faced by the elderly and to know their opinion on theirstay. The respondents were selected adopting a simple random method of sampling.

Description The researchers developed an automated Enrollment System for NEUST-MGT. This system is used for faster enrollment process of NEUST-MGT students. It can add, edit and display the information's of the enrollee such as new student, old student, regular student, irregular student or transferee student. It is connected through a network that having server and client computers. The researchers used the following software for the development of the system: Java Netbeans 8.0.2 as the front-end of the system and Adobe Photoshop CS6 that helps the researchers to enhance the Graphical User Interface and maintain the records in the database and MySQL Server which serve as the back-end of the system for fast and reliable database of the system. Etude sociologique des ressorts et implications des usages audiovisuels avancés chez les individus adultes et séniors. L'enquête s'appuie sur deux séries d'entretiens qualitatifs et instructions de carnets de bords, menées en 2016 et 2017, auprès de 25 foyers, soit 53 personnes âgées de 36 à 80 ans (Ile-de-France et Province). Cette étude exploratoire montre ainsi que les enfants adultes sont les référents cardinaux de la sophistication des usages audiovisuels et que la sociabilité est au cœur de ces ressorts. Un des résultats forts de cette enquête est l'émergence des femmes seniors essaimant les usages avancés, contribuant ainsi à les banaliser au sein de leur foyer. Ainsi, nous montrons que les seniors ne s’inscrivent pas systématiquement dans la catégorie que le paradigme diffusionniste qualifie de "Laggards" et qu'ils présentent en effet une propension palpable à la sophistication des pratiques audiovisuelles.

ABSTRACT

Senior citizens have been the prominent part of the Indian population. Earlier, they used to be the head of the families. Nowadays, their situation has been changing. Now, they are being forced to live away from their families and are taking shelters in old-age homes. They are getting information from the sources like television, newspapers, radio, internet, etc. Newspaper is being one of the oldest sources and that is the reason the researcher has taken it as a tool to find out how it is representing senior citizens. To discern the representation of elderly, the researcher has taken two newspapers of January month- The Times of India and Rajasthan Patrika of Jaipur edition. It is important to identify how much news space have been given to them and what type of stories have been written with what purpose about them. To fulfill the purpose of the research, it is needed to discover the problems and expectations of senior citizens, two old-age homes of Jaipur- Shubh Shanti Niwas of Prem Niketan Ashram and Anubhav of Indian Council of Social Welfare have been identified to recognize the issues of elderly population and their importance and impact of newspapers in their lives. This study may provide that what are the problems of senior citizens and how these problems are represented in the newspapers, is it leaving any impact on them or not for example through the dissemination of the information of government and private schemes like retirement pension, widow pension etc.

The silver economy is an area of growth. Almost all economic sectors are expected to benefit from the silver economy. Sectors like cosmetics and fashion, smart homes, ITC, health services (including medical devices, pharmaceuticals and eHealth), fitness and wellness, robotics services, finance and insurance, safety, culture, education and skills, entertainment, transport and of course tourism are expected to gain the most from the emerging new field of economy. The elder generation's enthusiasm for travel is growing rapidly. However, "senior tourism" is not yet a clearly defined segment. The elderly are a heterogeneous population group with different consumption demands that can only be met by a correspondingly differentiated range of products and services. As a result of the growing demand, senior tourists are foreseen to become a powerful consumer group in the near future. According to my research, they have their own preferences whilst travelling, and thus, the good understanding of their needs is becoming extremely important for silver tourism providers, especially because Europe is expected to be the biggest actor in the silver tourism market.

Introduction: " Silver Yoga " program has been devised by Centre for Yoga Therapy, Education and Research (CYTER) of Sri Balaji Vidyapeeth, Pondicherry. Participants practiced the protocol that was specially designed for senior citizens, keeping in mind their health status and physical limitations.

Resumen: Este  trabajo  analiza  la  protección  que  han  recibido  las  personas adultas  mayores  en  el  ámbito  del  derecho  constitucional,  en  particular  en  la jurisprudencia de la Sala Constitucionalde la Corte Suprema de Justicia, a través de la interpretación de lo dispuesto en el artículo 51 de la Constitución Política. La primera parte consiste en un estudio de derecho comparado sobre los derechos fundamentales  de  los  adultos  mayores.  Posteriormente  se  examinan  los  fallos paradigmáticos de la Sala Constitucional en la materia, en relación con diversos derechos  fundamentales  de  los  adultos  mayores.  En  el  apartado  cuarto  se abordan los derechos sociales de los adultos mayores, entre los que se exploran el  derecho  a  la  salud,  el  acceso  a  un  seguro  familiar,  pago  oportuno  de prestaciones laborales. Finalmente, la investigación concluye que, respecto a los derechos  humanos  de  las  personas  adultas  mayores,  existe  una  protección multinivel  caracterizada  por  catálogos  de  derechos  fundamentales,  en  la  que destaca el papel de los tribunales constitucionales.
Abstract: This  investigation  is  an  analysis  of  the  constitutional  protection  of senior  citizens’  rights,  especially  through  the  interpretations  of  article  51  of  the Political Constitution of Costa Rica. The first part is a study of comparative law of the fundamental rights of senior citizens. Then exams the paradigmatic rulings of the  Constitutional  Court  related  with  the  senior  citizens’  rights  (collective  and individual).  Finally,  the  investigation  concludes  that  regarding  the  fundamental rights of senior citizens, exists a multilevel protection in the form of a Bill of Rights, in which the constitutional courts have a prominent role.

Vivemos numa sociedade caraterizada por tendências demográficas que sugerem um envelhecimento da pirâmide etária, o que faz com que a procura de atividades de lazer e turismo para seniores tenha vindo a ganhar cada vez mais expressão e sentido. Com o aumento da esperança média de vida e do decréscimo da taxa de natalidade, perceciona-se um cenário de duplo envelhecimento, tanto na base da pirâmide etária como no seu topo (Rebelo, 2004; Neves, 2009), com impactos mais do que evidentes na necessidade diária de construção de soluções otimizadas de lazer para estes cidadãos, numa tentativa insistente de combate à solidão, depressão e isolamento, e com consequências imediatas na criação de um segmento de mercado apetecível. Atendendo a diversos fatores como a sua condição de reformados e sem obrigações profissionais e familiares e a algum rendimento disponível (Cavaco, 2009; Neves, 2009; Silva, 2008), os seniores têm novos e mais tempos livres. Neste âmbito, destacam-se os programas desenvolvidos pela Fundação INATEL, cujo âmbito de atuação visa uma preocupação diária e constante com o bem-estar e qualidade de vida de quem os procura, a par das inúmeras sugestões desenhadas pelos Operadores Turísticos.
É neste sentido que desenvolvemos um artigo científico que representa um contributo oportuno para uma reflexão sobre as questões relativas ao pacote turístico ideal para um público-alvo com exigências particulares. A análise pressupõe uma moldura teórica composta por uma conceptualização e análise da evolução das estatísticas mais relevantes dos fluxos turísticos, dos principais dados inerentes à definição do segmento sénior e dos programas que têm vindo a ser desenhados neste âmbito, e uma segunda parte que consiste numa componente empírica que aferirá, através da aplicação de um inquérito por questionário a um universo de seniores de duas Universidades Seniores, os fatores mais determinantes na escolha de um destino. Posteriormente, realizar-se-á uma proposta de pacote turístico, enquanto produto compósito que dá resposta a necessidades e preferências manifestadas.

The following article examines the application of Pierre Bourdieu's Practice Theory in accounting for ongoing disparities in accessing information and communications technology (ICT) in Singapore among senior citizens. As the relevance of Practice Theory is increasingly recognized among both scholars of ICT and ageing studies in modern societies, this article seeks to further contextualize and demonstrate its theoretical relevance and explanatory potential within developed, multicultural and rapidly ageing societies such as Singapore. Qualitative data collected from focus group discussions and personal in-depth interviews are analyzed to gain insights into how older adults above the age of 55 in Singapore perceive and use ICT. While it is argued that unequal access to forms of capital – be they social, cultural, economic, symbolic or bodily – has an obvious role in impacting the construction of one's habitus within the field of ICT usage, our findings reveal that not all forms of capital exert a similar impact on the accessibility of ICT. The discussions and interviews suggest that social and cultural capital play a relatively more fundamental role. While the increasingly easy-to-use and economically affordable nature of ICT has made it more accessible, our findings indicate that many older persons in Singapore still lack the necessary educational backgrounds, linguistic skills and supportive social networks that facilitate easier access. Such insights ultimately have implications on the nature of efforts by the state to create a more digitally inclusive society in Singapore.

Nepal is in the phase of age structure transition with a large proportion of young working-age population. This phase is also commonly known as the phase of ‘youth bulge’, ‘demographic dividends/bonuses’ or ‘window of opportunity’. This present phase and the consistent increment in the share of older-age population over the years signifies that the elderly population will continue to increase in the years to come. Amidst a limited formal support system for senior citizens and a weakening informal support system by family, relatives and society, the situation of senior citizens is destined to become a severe problem, if it is not addressed in time through effective policies. Existing policies in Nepal have incorporated the issues of the senior citizens and a general overview suggests that the policies are in tune with age structure transition. Yet, a deeper analysis of the policies reveal that they do not fully recognize the outcome of the transition. Thus, it is the objective of this policy study to highlight the importance of the transition and analyse the status of the aged population in light of it.The policy questions focuses on understanding the trend of age structure transition of the Nepali population and analysing its implications on the older age group. This policy study proposes enhancement of the informal support system as a policy alternative to address the challenges of the senior citizens in relation to the age structure transition.

Annotation The human population is ageing. This phenomenon is a major challenge for the society, but it can also be a great opportunity for business and economy. The competition for a better position in the ageing segment of the economy has already started worldwide. "Calico" was the first huge project in the United States to enter into this economic segment in an innovative way. In the EU, the "Silver economy" focused on developing strategies related to the ageing population, mainly in terms of special technology services. These services generally aim to support well-being through health monitoring, robotic assistance, electrical mobility or sport activities including health tourism, green care and web based home care solutions. Nowadays, innovation developers focus on solutions for elderly people. Economic sectors involved in innovation and development want immediate strategies and clear visions for the next decades. Health and social care, health services, self-health management and senior tourism all require ready models. The question is whether there is an innovative ready-to-use model that will be suitable for the needs of the Silver Economy?

The concept of meaningful ageing goes beyond the goal  of preventing diseases among the elderly. It pursues the objective of activating and facilitating the life of this social group in its physical, psychological, social and cultural aspect.
It is generally believed that high level ofactivity in old age and the optimal model of support in different fields of life allows the elderly to achieve their  priorities: being independent and self-sufficient as long as possible which inuences their opinion on their quality of life. This means that being active is the core element of the model of meaningful ageing.
The title of this publication reflects the premises and dictates the order of chapters and articles. Presented texts are mainly praxeological and in major part consist of the authors’
studies and research. The remainder are theoretical inquiries built around recent scientic findings. They are all bound together by the final chapter which includes the description of good practices in the field of activating senior citizens. The object of the authors’ inquiries were the issues associated with social gerontology. Their aim was to recognise or describe the spectrum of social reality already known to us which can contribute to meaningful and active ageing, which both constitute the elderly’s quality oflife.

Human development has remained one of the major concerns for social planners and policy makers over time. While improvements in human development aspects like health, decline in fertility, and an increase in longevity are desirable, the projected increase of the elderly population over the next few decades is emerging as serious development concern that warrants priority. The Paper is a first-of-its-kind attempt by Poverty Monitoring and Policy Support Unit (PMPSU) of Madhya Pradesh State Planning Commission to outline the situation analysis and major Issues that affect the elderly and review of existing gapsin policy and practice. This Paper is a compilation of various reviews, factsheets and research articles to highlight the contrast of the happy picture of increased longevity, and the prospect of long years of hopelessness, bereft of family andsociety. Finally, it provides suggestive measures so that the 'golden age' does not become synonymous with 'destitution' for about two-thirds of the elderly population in the country.

The populations of seniors in developed countries around the world are increasing rapidly, resulting in changes in social dynamics and purchasing behaviors, specifically in information technology and tourism. This study analyzes relationships among bonding and bridging social capital (SC), interpersonal, group, and site attachments, and loyalty to identify what makes seniors loyal to social network sites (SNSs) for tourism. Results show that bonding SC affects interpersonal and group attachment and that bridging SC highly influences interpersonal and group attachment. Also, interpersonal attachment has a positive effect on group attachment, which, in turn, is highly influential on site attachment. In particular, group attachment has a strong effect on site attachment, but interpersonal attachment is not shown to affect site attachment. It is also notable that loyalty to SNSs is greatly influenced by site attachment. The findings contribute to the academic literature and provide useful information for practitioners maintaining SNSs.

Tahun 2020 telah menyaksikan kehidupan sebilangan besar populasi dunia terjejas akibat pandemik COVID-19 yang diisytiharkan sebagai darurat kesihatan awam oleh Pertubuhan Kesihatan Sedunia (WHO). Malaysia juga turut terkesan dengan pandemik ini sejak kes pertama direkodkan berlaku pada Januari 2020 dan bilangannya yang terus meningkat di setiap negeri pada bulan-bulan berikutnya. Sehubungan itu, pihak kerajaan telah melaksanakan perintah kawalan pergerakan (PKP) untuk memutuskan rantaian pandemik ini. Namun, pelaksanaan PKP secara tidak langsung memberi impak yang begitu besar terhadap kelangsungan hidup semua lapisan masyarakat termasuklah warga emas terutamanya dari aspek daya tahan golongan ini. Justeru, makalah ini bertujuan mengkaji impak PKP terhadap daya tahan warga emas di Pulau Pinang dari aspek adaptasi dengan keadaan PKP di samping meninjau sistem sokongan yang tersedia untuk mereka. Kaedah temu bual mendalam dijalankan bersama 10 informan warga emas yang berumur 60 tahun ke atas. Hasil kajian mendapati bahawa hubungan sosial yang erat dan akses kepada aktiviti yang berkait dengan alam/persekitaran menjadi elemen penting dalam kelangsungan daya tahan warga emas ketika PKP. Kajian ini memberi gambaran dan kefahaman kepada masyarakat tentang daya tahan salah satu daripada golongan rentan ketika pandemik di samping menyumbang idea berkenaan intervensi kepada pihak pemegang taruh dalam melestarikan dan menyejahterakan hidup warga emas seiring dengan sasaran Matlamat Pembangunan Lestari (Sustainable Development Goals – SDG) yang ketiga, iaitu memastikan kehidupan yang sihat dan menggalakkan kesejahteraan pada semua peringkat usia.

Resumen:El artículo aborda los alcances de la protección de los adultos mayores en la jurisprudencia de la Corte Constitucional de Colombia. En una primera parte expone de forma general la organización y funcionamiento de dicho Tribunal, así como algunos principios constitucionales básicos para la temática. Luego aborda en detalle diversos aspectos resueltos por la jurisprudencia a favor de los adultos mayores, como la acción de tutela, el mínimo vital y el trato preferencial.

Abstract: This article addresses senior citizens protection under the Colombian constitutional case law. The first part exposes the general organization and operation of the Constitutional Court and some constitutional principles fundamental to the subject of matter. The second part comments the rulings of relevant cases regarding protection request (acción de tutela), universal basic income and preferential treatment.

Ageing is an inevitable phenomenon in human beings. Senior citizens with increasing age get surrounded with many issues, among which socio-psychological problems have become a chief topic in the current anthropological debate. The objective of the study was to explore the socio-psychological issues faced by senior citizen at community level. To undertake the research a sample inclusive of 271 elders was selected. The methodology employed was exploratory, and data collection tools included interview guide and informal interviews. The current study reveals that older persons become victims of many socio psychological issues in their later life which includes depression, bereavement, inactive sexual life, economic dependence, social exclusion and dementia. These socio-psychological issues have strong impact on the health and life of older persons.
