This paper makes an attempt to assess the contribution of service sector as the last couple of years organized service sector is becoming a vital contributor to the world economic development. Based on dynamic panel technique we use one way error component panel regression model for 17 countries to investigate the existence and association between countries per capita income and service sectors share. Examining the dynamic behavior of service sector we find how per capita GDP and GDP growth rates are related with the service sector share as well as the effect of sectoral differences in the GDP growth rate. Findings of this paper show the world economic growth has been marked by the rapid growth of its services sector, i.e. the growth of service sector is positive to economic development and economy’s employment and trade sector has greatly benefitted from service sector growth.

PurposeTo discuss the gender dimension of migration and human rights, and to provide an assessment of how to improve human rights protections for migrant women workers in janitorial services and night clubs across registered and unregistered migrant women workers in North Cyprus.Design/methodology/approachA survey is done to establish the employment conditions of migrant women workers in both sectors. The conditions are evaluated to assess the compliance with North Cyprus labor and immigration legislation and international human rights protocols.FindingsRegistered and unregistered segment of the janitorial services and unregistered segment of sex industry are dominated by Turkish migrant women. The registered part of sex industry is dominated by Eastern European migrant women mostly due to the legislative framework within which these two activities operate, primarily with respect to immigration requirements and also as it pertains to the remunerative potential of activity. Purpose Employees with a chronic disease may experience work-related problems that contribute to the risk of job loss. We developed a group-based intervention programme aimed at clarifying problems, making these a subject of discussion at work, and realizing solutions. This process evaluation investigates the intervention’s feasibility and the satisfaction of 64 participants in eight groups. Methods Data were collected through process evaluation forms and self-report questionnaires. Results The recruitment of participants was time-consuming. Highly educated women working in the service sector were overrepresented. The programme was administered as planned, although components were sometimes only discussed briefly, due to lack of time. Satisfaction with the overall programme among participants was high; it was perceived as effective and there were only three dropouts. In particular, the focus on feelings and thoughts about having a chronic disease was highly valued, as were the exchange of experiences and role-playing directed at more assertive communication. Conclusions A vocational rehabilitation programme aimed at job retention is feasible and is perceived to be effective. Such a programme should address psychosocial aspects of working with a chronic disease beside practical problems. The recruitment of participants is time-consuming. Cooperation with outpatient clinics is necessary in order to reach all groups of employees with a chronic disease that might benefit from job retention programmes. Trial registration: ISRCTN77240155

Resolving a conflict constructively has often been a challenge for managers and it is found that it varies across gender and personal characteristics. This paper examines conflict management styles adopted by practicing managers and their conflict management approach, in terms of gender and gender role identity. The study was done with 449 managers employed in the service sector in select cities of Kerala, India. The tools used for measurement were Conflict Resolution Inventory (CRI) and Bem Sex Role Inventory (BSRI). Statistical tools like independent sample t-tests and multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) were used for the analysis of data. It was revealed upon analysis that managers are shedding of the typical gender stereotypes and being more androgynous. Significant difference in conflict management style was found only in confrontation style with respect to gender but found to be significant with all conflict management styles across the various gender role identities. Unlike the feminine category, androgynous and masculine managers used more of approach modes of conflict styles. As both concepts conflict management and gender role identity under study are culturally ascribed to an extent, a study of this kind in an Indian context adds on to the existing research work and throws light on the variations.

This paper presents research from a larger project investigating industrial relations and human resource management practices across Australia, New Zealand and Canada. The comparisons in this paper are between private sector unionised organisations of fifty employees and over. Data were collected from 677 organisations. Our dependent variable in this study is the extent to which organisations have not entered into an enterprise agreement, have negotiated one that doesn't differ significantly from previous award conditions and agreements that do differ significantly from terms and conditions attributable to more centralised bargaining conditions. One of our key independent variables was the extent to which enterprise bargaining was associated with an employers desire to avoid unionisation. We found no support for this hypothesis. However, we found moderate support for enterprise bargaining being associated with workforce reduction and also with employers operating in the service ...

This article examines how knowledge management (KM) affects innovation performance within biotechnology firms. This is an industry in which small-and medium-sized biotech enterprises live together with the biotech divisions of large pharmaceutical firms. We conceptualize KM as a set of practices and dynamic capabilities, and hypothesize that KM dynamic capabilities act as a mediating variable between KM practices and innovation performance. We use structural equation modelling to test the hypotheses on a ...

Modern manufacturing organizations tend to face versatile challenges due to globalization, modern lifestyle trends and rapid market requirements from both locally and globally placed competitors. The organizations faces high stress from dual perspective namely enhancement in science and technology and development of modern strategies. In such an instance, organizations were in a need of using an effective decision making tool that chooses out optimal alternative that reduces time, complexity and highly simplified. This paper explores a usage of new multi criteria decision making tool known as MOORA for selecting the best alternatives by examining various case study. The study was covered up in two fold manner by comparing MOORA with other MCDM and MADM approaches to identify its advantage for selecting optimal alternative, followed by extending MOORA with interval grey numbers, crisp and interval grey number and whitening coefficient and future scope of the present work concentrate on highlighting the scope and gap between MOORA, Multiplicative form of MOORA(MULTIMOORA) and Multi objective optimization on the basis of simple ratio analysis (MOOSRA) for numerous manufacturing and service applications.

There is evidence that the notion of innovation, well established in the manufacturing sector, cannot simply be transposed to the service sector. This article deals critically with existing measurement concepts derived from manufacturing, and introduces a new typology with a view to obtaining a better understanding of innovation in services. Selected results from the German innovation survey are analysed in order to support the conceptual findings and to identify potential improvements. Special attention is directed towards the inclusion of knowledge-intensive business services that are of particular importance for innovation processes.

If the companies in the service sector do not express themselves correctly and do not provide the required service, they fall behind in the competition race and have to leave the sector. Thus, the effect of leadership within senior managers on employees is reflected in organisation performance, which gain more importance every day. The purpose of this study is to analyse the relationships between the variables of leader effectiveness, learning orientation and effective communication, and team creativity and service innovation. As a result of our analyses, it was determined that leadership effectiveness and learning orientation have a positive impact on effective communication, team creativity, and service innovation. This indicates that if an organisation has effective leadership and learning orientation, it positively contributes to effective communication, team creativity, and service innovation in the service sector. 348 questionnaires collected from white-collar employees were used for evaluation; factor and reliability analysis were conducted on the Likert scale questions; correlation analysis was carried out to examine the relationships between variables; regression analysis was performed to test the hypotheses.
