Swiss German Literature

Crime Fiction in German is the first volume in English to offer a comprehensive overview of German-language crime fiction from the early nineteenth century to the new millennium. As well as introducing readers to key aspects of crime fiction in the German-speaking world - from Germany, Austria and Switzerland to the former GDR and post-colonial Africa - the volume expands the notion of a German crime-writing tradition by investigating areas such as crime fiction under National Socialism, Turkish-German crime fiction and the Afrika-Krimi. Significant trends, including women’s crime writing, regional crime fiction, historical crime fiction and the Fernsehkrimi (television crime drama) are also explored, highlighting the richness and diversity of the genre in Germanic contexts.

Der Artikel setzt sich zum Ziel, Hundert Tage von Lukas Bärfuss unter die Lupe zu nehmen und es als Studium des Fremden, Bösen und Globalen zu behandeln. Erforscht wird, inwieweit das Thema des Völkermordes in Ruanda für die deutschsprachige Schweizer Literatur interessant erscheinen kann, wie das Fremde samt Bösem und Globalem in dem Roman aufeinander Einfluss nehmen und wie diese gegenseitige Beeinflussung realisiert wird. The article has the goal to analyse Hundert Tage of Lukas Bärfuss and to regard it as a study of the Strangeness, Evil and Global. It will be explored how far the topic of the genocide in Rwanda may seem interesting for the Swiss German literature, how the Strangeness, Evil and Global influence each other in the novel and how this mutually influence is realised.

Nel 2021 ricorre il centenario della nascita di Friedrich Dürrenmatt (1921-1990). L’immagine che questo celebrato autore ha lasciato di sé è quella di un avversario del fideismo e di ogni benemerita illusione, di un ateo chiuso nel suo mondo di parabole spietate, di finali spesso catastrofici, di labirinti, di atti d’accusa contro l’affarismo, il cinismo, il militarismo anacronistico del suo paese, la pericolosità delle superpotenze. Il paradosso, il grottesco e il caso sono le cifre più corpose nelle sue opere. Eppure si deve parlare anche del Singolo (der Einzelne), una categoria originariamente kierkegaardiana. Il Singolo, in Dürrenmatt, è un rivoltoso, un sabotatore, uno strano giustiziere, oppure è un individuo che cerca di difendersi dall’invasività e insidiosità di entità molto più grandi lui.

Der Briefwechsel zwischen Goethe und Tieck beginnt im Jahr 1798 und endet am 24. September 1829.  In diesen 31 Jahren ist aber die Beziehung zwischen den beiden Dichtern voller Spannungen und Missverständnissen. Man kann nicht einen Diskurs über Ludwig Tieck beginnen, ohne auf das Verhältnis der Haßliebe zwischen dem romantischen Geist Tieck's und dem olympischen Goethe zu stoßen. Es wird tatsächlich sofort ein Zweifel ausgeraumt, der viel zu lange die Gelehrten geprägt hatte: Der goetische Faust und die zwei Teile des Gestiefelten Katers (der zweite Teil, also Prinz Zerbino, wurde bisher zugunsten des ersten vernachlaßigt) sind zueinander antithetisch zu sehen, wenn auch in gewisser Weise-parallel.

La critique littéraire a souvent regardé l’histoire des familles comme un genre exprimant une vision subjective de l’ascendance. Selon Sigmund Freud, le « roman familial des Névrosés » (1909) est une fantasmagorie enfantine ou juvénile, qui substitue aux origines de la famille réelle une filiation imaginée, et plus digne.1 Dominique Viart, dans son analyse pertinente du « récit filial », a souligné la fonction autoréflexive par laquelle ce genre « est le détour nécessaire pour parvenir à soi »2. Les prises de positions de Freud ou Viart sont représentatives des approches qui se penchent surtout sur la
productivité poétique de la famille. La famille, nous semble-t-il, ne cesse de proposer des défis pour la définition
de l’identité d’un protagoniste, à l’inverse des valeurs et actions ses ancêtres. Néanmoins, le thème « récit et
savoir »3 permet d’explorer également la fonction historiographique de ce genre qui a surtout été abordé dans la
critique littéraire de l’Allemagne des dernières années.4 Cette fonction historiographique nous semble également
importante parce qu’elle concerne l’identité d’un ensemble social plus large des personnages fictifs. Mais que
signifie, dès lors, analyser un roman mettant en scène une famille fictionnelle à travers la grille de
l’historiographie ?

This study examines the changing literary discourse in German-speaking Switzerland as second generation immigrant authors write compelling narratives and are awarded prestigious literary prizes in Europe.

This article describes a five-week module on “Switzerland as a multi-ethnic society” intended to counteract the popular image of Switzerland as a homogenous country concerned mostly with tourism, chocolate, and watches. Instead, the module treats Switzerland through topics such as the definition of identity in a multi-ethnic society, the politics of immigration for a largely service-based economy, and the strains that migration puts on a modern society shaped by political will. The unit seeks to familiarize students with contemporary multi-ethnic Switzerland through a number of different texts (including film and music), compare the Swiss debates of migration and integration to those in the United States, and move students toward deep reflection on the larger issue concerning migration and national identity. The module is versatile in that it can be taught as part of a course on Switzerland, or of a broader course on migration in the German-speaking countries.

Cet article propose une relecture de l’ouvrage de Friedrich Dürrenmatt Minotaure (1984) à la lumière des approches éco-, géo- et zoopoétique, afin de montrer que deux thématiques centrales de l’œuvre – l’espace labyrinthique et la relation homme-animal – préfigurent les problèmes écologiques d’une époque où la littérature se trouve confrontée au défi majeur d’écrire dans un monde en danger. La mise à mort du minotaure apparaît dans cette perspective comme la préfiguration du déni actuel de la souffrance animale et d’une impossible entente interspécifique, et le labyrinthe, lieu inhabitable par excellence, comme le symbole de l’inhabitabilité d’une planète à la dérive. Grâce à la danse et la poésie, une réconciliation entre les animaux humains et non humains, entre l’homme et la nature, semble toutefois possible, montrant la voie hors du labyrinthe de nos vi(ll)es modernes.



In diesem Artikel werden die Forschungsansätze des Ecocriticism, der Geopoetik und der Zoopoetik gekreuzt, um Friedrich Dürrenmatts Minotaurus (1984) neu zu erschließen. Es wird gezeigt, dass zwei zentrale Themen des Werkes – der labyrinthische Raum und die Mensch-Tier-Beziehungen – die ökologischen Probleme einer Zeit vorwegnehmen, in der die Literatur mit der großen Herausforderung konfrontiert ist, in einer gefährdeten Welt zu schreiben: Die Tötung des Minotaurus erscheint in dieser Hinsicht als Präfiguration der gegenwärtigen Verleugnung tierischen Leids und einer unmöglichen zwischenartlichen Verständigung; und das Labyrinth, der unbewohnbare Ort par excellence, steht für die Unbewohnbarkeit eines treibenden Planeten. Dank des Tanzes und der Poesie scheint eine Versöhnung zwischen menschlichen und nicht-menschlichen Tieren, zwischen Mensch und Natur, dennoch möglich, wobei ein Weg aus dem Labyrinth unseres modernen Lebens angedeutet wird.

This article proposes a rereading of Friedrich Dürrenmatt’s Minotaur (1984) in the light of eco-, geo- and zoopoetic approaches, in order to show that the two main subjects of the novel – the labyrinth and the man-animal relationship – foreshadow today’s ecological issues, when writers are faced with the daunting task of writing in an endangered world: the killing of the minotaur appears in this respect as a prefiguration of the current denial of animal suffering and the impossibility of inter-species communication, while the labyrinth, an inherently uninhabitable space, could symbolise the uninhabitability of a planet that has lost its bearings. Thanks to dance and poetry, reconciliation nevertheless seems to be possible between human and non-human animals, between man and nature, pointing to a possible way out of the labyrinth of modern life.

Ernst Robert Curtius is well known as an advocate of European literature, which transcends national boundaries. Most importantly, he is recognized as a literary historian, who wrote European Literature and the Latin Middle Ages (Europäische Literatur und lateinisches Mittelalter, 1948). Nevertheless, Curtius published a lot of critical works during the inter-war years and after World War II. In order to consider the processes through which he developed a European spirit, I would like to focus on his literary critics concerning contemporary writers like Romain Rolland, André Gide, Hugo von Hofmannsthal, and José Ortega y Gasset. I pay particular attention to Curtius' network of friendships with these writers and try to reconsider the relation between his journalistic works and European Literature and the Latin Middle Ages.

The following article presents a literary model of settling accounts with Nazism in German prose based on a metaphorical configuration of two main protagonists, a woman and a man, and on their mutual relationships determined by eroticism. This model appears in slightly different forms both in German and Austrian as well as in Swiss literature. The author of this article analyzes the relationships between invariant characteristics of the abovementioned interpretative pattern and its respective applica-tion in each given historical context.

The theory of “literature as cultural” ecology forms the theoretical standpoint of
my dissertation entitled “Literature as Sensory and Symbolic Balance. Analysis
of German Novels of the ‘Fin d’un Millenaire.’” The theory is first applied to the
classical works of American literature and it has not yet been employed in
German literary criticism apart from few works. The aim of this dissertation is
not only to prove the applicability of the theory of “literature as cultural ecology”
to German literature, but also show its affinity to German literature in terms of
a philosophical basis while providing the theory’s accessibility for the literary
arena. Namely, the philosophical outlook in Nietzsche’s The Birth of Tragedy,
Adorno&Horkheimer’s Dialectic of Enlightenment and Bakhtin’s Rabelais and
His World are examined within the scope of this dissertation considering that
they form the subtexts of a cultural-ecological analysis of literary works.
The theory of “literature as cultural ecology” is applied to the selected novels
from German, Austrian and Swiss literatures of the “fin d’un millenaire”, a
literary period that is regarded as the transition period to the 21st century.
While the turn of a century or a millennium is revealed as the questioning of
the past in terms of not only sociological and philosophical, but also a literary
stance, it renders the stagnant mentality attain a cyclical impetus.
Although the Western ideals that are stereotyped and merely based on
rationality is interrogated within the scope of philosophical treatises and literary
theories, the breaking of the mode of perception as the “self” and the “other” is
not actualized in literaturwissenschaft. Moreover, such a duality-based
perception mainly stem from the nature/culture dichotomy is elaborated in
literature in a more intensive way. Literature, in the context of Hubert Zapf’s
theory of “literature as cultural ecology” which can be regarded as an
extension of ecocriticism, is not perceived as performing merely as a means to
settle cultural activities, or the propaganda of returning to nature. On the
contrary, it demonstrates the interaction of these dichotomies and a new mode
of perception it can produce on the part of the society. Accordingly, Zapf’s
triadic function model displays that literature fulfils the function of a culturalcritical metadiscourse, imaginative counter-discourse, and a reintegrative interdiscourse.

So berühmt er war als Schriftsteller, man kann die Rolle Hugo Loetschers im intellektuellen Umfeld der Schweiz nur dann richtig werten, wenn man auch auf seine Bedeutung als Kommentator hinweist. Sprachgewandt wie nur wenige seiner deutschsprachigen Kollegen und fliessend auf Französisch und Italienisch, war er ein gerngesehener Gast im Rundfunk und Fernsehen, um eine Stellungnahme zur kulturellen und politischen Lage seines Landes abzugeben. Ein Text, den er bei solchen Anlässen gerne zitierte, war „Was - wenn der liebe Gott Schweizer wäre“. In dieser Kurzgeschichte, die 1983 im Sammelband Der Waschküchenschlüssel erschien und wegen seiner Beliebtheit seit 1988 als Untertitel fungiert, geht es darum, was wohl passiert wäre, wenn Gott schweizerische Charaktereigenschaften gehabt hätte. Loetschers Fazit: Wenn Gott so schöpferisch gewesen wäre im Abwarten wie die Schweizer, dann würde er heute immer noch auf den richtigen Moment für die Schöpfung warten. Erstaunlich ist, dass er die gleiche Geschichte in einem anderen politischen Kontext immer wieder vom Neuen erzählen konnte, etwa als es um Frauenstimmrecht ging oder um den Beitritt zu den Vereinten Nationen oder angesichts der Mitgliedschaft der Europäischen Union. Wenn man sich die Rezeptionsgeschichte Loetschers literarischen Schreibens anschaut, stellt man fest, dass diese Kontinuität der Neuigkeit eine Konstante ist, die durchaus über diese eine Geschichte hinausgeht. Viele seiner älteren Werke wurden in einem anderen Zusammenhang wieder höchst aktuell, was gar zur Vermutung führt, dass Loetscher der Rezeption nicht selten ein paar Jahrzehnte voraus war.

From Multiculturalism to Hybridity: New Approaches to Teaching Switzerland places Switzerland within the context of transnational labor migration and examines how this German-, French-, Italian-, and Romansh-speaking nation is being transformed by the influx of migrants from all over the world who now constitute a fifth of the population. This dynamic mixture of cultures and races is embodied by a new generation of citizens who call themselves 'Secondas and Secondos,' the second generation. Today, Switzerland is leading all industrial nations in growth potential and economic benefits from migration (OECD). The articles in this volume analyze the challenges, successes, and ongoing struggles Switzerland experiences with migration, focusing specifically on what it means to shape a nation-state by political will rather than linguistic and cultural unity. From Multiculturalism to Hybridity also offers teaching suggestions for the French, German, and Italian language and literature classroom as well as for courses in Social, Cultural, and Political Studies. Articles address the hybrid literatures and cultures of Switzerland including films, pageants, smellscapes, and women s issues and place Switzerland in the context of a unifying European continent. Readers will find ideas and resources for critically investigating and teaching the concepts of cultural hybridity and transculturalism in the high school and college classroom.

»Goethe und die Schweiz« bedeutet nicht allein die Erschließung zahlreicher motiv- und werkgeschichtlicher Anknüpfungspunkte – diese bedeutende Beziehung erlaubt es, eine bislang in diesem Ausmaß unbekannte Rezeptions- und Kulturgeschichte aufzuweisen, die neues, oft unbekanntes Licht auf Goethes Schaffen, seine Zeit und seine Beeinflussung zu werfen vermag. Der vorliegende Band nimmt sich erstmals in kulturhistorischer, kulturwissenschaftlicher und ästhetischer Breite diesem Themenkomplex an. Vorgestellt werden etwa Darstellungen der Schweiz um 1800, neue Lektüren zu Topos und Sujet der Schweiz in Goethes Werk sowie dessen »Spuren« innerhalb der Schweizer Literatur. Dabei erscheint die Schweiz sowohl als Inspirationsquelle von Goethes naturwissenschaftlichen Schriften wie als Motivation seiner praktizierten Schreibweisen, als politischer Mythos wie als kulturelles Konzept, als intertextueller Bezugsrahmen wie als poetologische Diskursschule. Eine von der Berner Literaturgeschichtsschreibung allzu lange versäumte Replik auf Ferdinand Vetters Aufsatz von 1904, in welchem er nachweisen wollte, dass die beiden sowohl in den alten Drucken als auch in der Berner Reformationschronik des Valerius Anshelm auf 1522 datierten Spiele in Wahrheit erst 1523 aufgeführt worden sein können. Dieser in der Forschung seither allgemein akzeptierte Nachweis hat als misslungen zu gelten.

Politische und gesellschaftliche Umbrüche verbinden sich mit einem Bedeutungsverlust kirchlicher Verkündigung und Lehre. In Reaktion auf Krieg, Revolution und Chaos dehnt der Staat seine Macht aus und bindet dabei die Kirchendiener in seine Geschäfte ein. Die neue Ökonomie verspricht mehr als der alte Gottesglaube; das Wirtshaus erhält mehr Zulauf als das Gotteshaus. Die Rede ist von einer Zeit, die rund 200 Jahre zurückliegt. In selbiger Zeit nahm ein Pfarrer die Schriftstellerei als neues Medium zu Hilfe, um damit zu lehren. Wie die Bibel erzählt er Geschichten, wie Jesus redete er in Gleichnissen. Sein Stoff ist das bäuerliche Leben im Emmental, wo er lebt und wirkt. Die Rede ist von Pfr. Albert Bitzius (1797–1854) alias Jeremias Gotthelf. Seine Verkündigung mittels gleichnishafter Erzählung hat auch in unserer Gegenwart, die ebenfalls von Umbrüchen gekennzeichnet ist, ihr Wort zu sagen.

We present here Une panosse pour poutser, the translation of Hugo Loetscher’s essay on ‘language impurity’ published in 2000 (Äs tischört und plutschins. Über das Unreine in der Sprache). In this key text, Loetscher expresses his vision of Switzerland and the world. He discusses the relationship between language and nation, and between local and global literature, as well as the issues of multilingualism (both societal and individual) and of the transition from one language or culture to another (whether in spoken or in written discourse). The metalinguistic or translatological dimension of the work poses a great challenge for translators, whose ‘crab walk’ (to use a metaphor mentioned in the essay) is exposed here. We discuss the premises that led us to make certain translation choices, particularly in regard to regionalisms or to standard German/Swiss German diglossia – topics for which Loetscher himself, as it happens, seemed to supply hints to potential translators. To illustrate an approach that can be described as polyphonic, we explain how, after having defined our goal (skopos), we chose a particular expression or cultural reference, trying to take into account the various target groups – French-speaking Swiss, French, but also Quebecers.

The Black Spider is a religious allegory about morals and religious living in the mid-eighteen hundreds. In a small Swiss community, a baptism is the backdrop for a village elder to tell the story of his family and its life and death struggle with the devil himself. The elder relates the story of a knight and his ill treatment of the farmers of the area. The knight’s inhuman demands on the peasants bring about unforeseen consequences, which would lead to the decimation of the village and, ultimately, his own death. The plague released through a pact with the devil, the black spider, haunts the village for hundreds of years and must be fought with religious piety, courage and devotion to traditional values. When one forgets God and his commandments, that is when the black spider is at its most deadly. A true tale of morality by a pastor in 1842, The Black Spider is to serve as a warning to those who, according to Gotthelf, go against the will of God.
