Torri Costiere

In questo primo lavoro di mappatura delle torri nell'agro di Corato si è andati alla ricerca di tutte quelle strutture a torre o definite tali e nascoste per la maggior parte.
Nella mappatura si è andati prima ad indagare su quelle torri indicate nelle mappe storiche e in quelle dell’Istituto Geografico Militare (IGM) del 1870 e del 1955, poi si sono individuate anche altre torri inedite non presenti su nessuna cartografia.
Le torri sono state descritte, inserendo anche la loro posizione attuale, con un’ampia galleria fotografica e schede individuali. (maggio 2022).

Durante l'Età Moderna si è assistito alla nascita, al consolidamento e al declino di grandi Potenze che hanno trascinato con sè numerosi conflitti politici e religiosi. Il Mar Mediterraneo, configurandosi come area di contatto tra i più lontani Imperi, ha vissuto un'epoca di intensa attività navale sotto forma di pirateria, guerre di corsa e deterrenza armata, disseminandosi sulle sue rive di torri d'avvistamento.
L'organizzazione del sistema difensivo è avvenuta in intima relazione con il territorio, connotando fortemente la costa che per secoli le ha viste quali uniche presenze antropiche litoranee. Il loro carattere esclusivamente militare ha tuttavia inibito il loro riuso nel tempo, suscitando fino a pochi decenni fa il disinteresse della comunità e il loro disconoscimento dalle architetture meritevoli di tutela. La conoscenza delle vicende storiche e dei caratteri morfotipologici del sistema pugliese di torri costiere diviene dunque il punto di partenza per il loro riconoscimento in qualità di caratteri identitari fondanti del territorio, finalizzando il presente studio alla riappropriazione da parte della comunità di questi beni quali veicoli strategici di trasmissione della storia pregressa locale e dei suoi valori patrimoniali intrinseci.
Finalità del presente elaborato è la conoscenza delle vicende storiche e dei caratteri del sistema pugliese di torri costiere, sviluppata con la ricerca, l'analisi storica e lo studio morfotipologico delle torri costiere della provincia di Lecce. Queste ultime sono state oggetto delle analisi spaziali e tipologiche prodotte con l'ausilio del software opensource "Quantum GIS", provvedendo alla loro georeferenziazione sulle basi cartografiche ufficiali.
Ricerca e analisi sono proseguite focalizzandosi sulla Torre dell'Omomorto, prima torre italiana che ancora si scorge provenendo dalle rotte Orientali che passano per la Grecia, dominante sul porto di Santa Maria di Leuca in Puglia (LE). Lo studio ha visto la produzione di rilievi e restituzioni concernenti le mappature dei materiali e dei fenomeni di degrado, nonchè il riconoscimento delle diverse unità stratigrafiche murarie che hanno permesso un'ipotesi di lettura delle fasi di trasformazione vissute dal manufatto. Le analisi sono state accompagnate da una proposta di restauro di tipo conservativo e di rifunzionalizzazione della Torre e degli spazi di sua competenza.

During the Modern Age we witnessed the birth, consolidation and decline of great powers that dragged numerous political and religious conflicts with them. The Mediterranean Sea, as area of contact between the most distant Empires, experienced an era of intense naval activity in the form of piracy, race wars and armed deterrence, spreading along its shores with coastal watch towers.
The organization of the defensive system of coastal towers took place in intimate relationship with the territory, strongly characterizing the coast which for centuries has seen them as unique coastal anthropical presence. Their exclusively military character has, however, inhibited their reuse over time, arousing until a few decades ago the disinterest of the community and their disavowal of architectures worthy of protection. The knowledge of the historical events and the morphotypological characteristics of the Apulian system of coastal towers thus becomes the starting point for their acknowledgment as fundamental identifying characters of the territory, finalizing the present study to the re-appropriation of these assets by the community as strategical vehicles for the transmission of the local history and its intrinsic values.
The purpose of this paper is the knowledge of the historical events and characteristics of the Apulian system of coastal towers, developed with research, historical analysis and the morphotypological study of the coastal towers of the province of Lecce. These have been the subjects of spatial and typological analyzes produced with the help of the opensource software "Quantum GIS", providing for their georeferencing on the official cartographic bases.
Research and analysis have continued focusing on the Omomorto Tower, the first Italian tower that can still be seen coming from the Eastern routes that pass through Greece and that dominates the port of Santa Maria di Leuca in Puglia (LE). The study allowed the production of surveys and analyses concerning the mapping of materials and degradation phenomena, as well as the recognition of the different stratigraphic constructive units that allowed one to hypothesize the reading of the transformation phases experienced by the artifact.
The analyses have been followed by a restoration and re-functionalization proposal of the Tower and the spaces within its competence.

La storia del Mediterraneo è la storia delle sue coste e delle sue isole e di tutte le rotte che, intersecandolo, hanno diffuso civiltà, culture, pensieri. Tutta la storia e la vita dell’uomo, ogni suo evento, ogni sua speranza, ogni sua realizzazione, è sempre avvenuta, in qualche modo, sul mare o attraverso il mare. Guardando al Mediterraneo, come mare da dominare, esso si rivela ‘specchio’ di una parata di fortezze d’acqua, rocche appartenenti a sistemi castellari, manieri, che mutano aspetto in relazione ai cambiamenti politici e ai progressi nell’arte del guerreggiare, alla cui ombra, in un universo infinito di rotte d’acqua, si riflettono le gesta quotidiane della gente di mare, di condottieri, nobili, pellegrini, crociati e pirati. L’originaria funzione di difesa e di controllo di queste architetture, ha fatto sì che nel passato costituissero dei segni forti sul territorio, elementi significativi di grande valenza architettonica. Oggi la situazione di tali manufatti è chiaramente mutata, motivo in più per interpretarne il significato attuale, prevalentemente settato sulla funzione di nodi di comunicazione turistica e promozione culturale del territorio. Dapprima utilizzate come semplici postazioni d’avvistamento, sorte per la difesa passiva delle coste, in seguito, dopo l’introduzione delle armi da fuoco, vengono dotate di ulteriori corpi di fabbrica, massicci e articolati, che permettono a queste scole troneggianti sul Tirreno d’ingaggiare battaglie contro gli attacchi provenienti dal mare; integre o allo stato di rudere, raccontano in silenzio brai di storia. Il contributo si propone, attraverso lo studio delle fonti d’archivio e iconografiche, di approfondire caratteri tipologici e tecniche costruttive, nonché possibili azioni di restauro e valorizzazione, di alcune di queste fabbriche comprese nel litorale laziale; tra queste le torri d’avvistamento e di presidio di un territorio, in un insieme compatto, che si raccorda, a nord, con le torri di Fiumicino, torre campanaria di S. Ippolito, torre Niccolina, torre Alessandrina e torre Clementina, e, a sud, con le torri Paterno, tor Vajanica, tor Caldara.

L'abstract analizza le fasi del processo di antropizzazione del tratto costiero laziale compreso fra Civitavecchia a Nord e Nettuno a Sud, focalizzando l’attenzione su evidenze morfologiche, toponimi, testimonianze archeologiche e architettoniche, strutture portuali, insediamenti urbani, torri d’avvistamento e di presidio del territorio, casali agricoli, in quanto tracce, ancora visibili di situazioni e presenze ormai cancellate dallo scorrere del tempo; segni non del tutto alterati dalla modificazione antropica dell’area, contraddistinta, soprattutto nel secolo passato, da una forte espansione urbana ed edilizia, una parte della quale incontrollata nonché dalla costruzione della importante infrastruttura dell’aeroporto di Fiumicino. In particolare, viene indagato il litorale ostiense, fin dall’antichità ‘di-segnato’ dalla presenza del Tevere che, nel tempo, ha determinato con il trasporto di sedimenti e detriti, l’avanzamento della costa di circa 4 chilometri. Un insieme complesso che andrebbe salvaguardato con un progetto unitario che coinvolga sia i beni culturali sia quelli ambientali, ormai strettamente correlati tra loro nel determinare caratteri e qualità del paesaggio attuale.

The text historically marks the birth of coastal defense in the Kingdom of Naples, with the advent of Spanish domination in the territory, outlining the reasons behind it and highlighting the development that the Coast Guard's preventive system had over the centuries.
The research has produced as a novelty the fact that the construction of the coastal towers had, in Gaeta, a archetype of the defense system, so far considered to be located in 1532, while the direct archive survey and in situ investigation revealed that the The first construction in the territory dates back to 1531, as seen in a dedicatory placard near the tower of S. Agostino.
The result of accurate analysis is the structures that existed in the Terracina area and the mouth of the river Ga-rigliano, their conservation status and the restorations that affected them.
Work culminates with a reflection on the concept of conservation of the ruin.


Il testo ripercorre storicamente la nascita della difesa costiera nel Regno di Napoli, con l’avvento del dominio spagnolo sul territorio, delineando i motivi che ne sono alla base e lumeggiando lo sviluppo che il sistema preventivo di salvaguardia delle coste ebbe nei secoli.
La ricerca ha prodotto come elemento di novità il fatto che la costruzione delle torri costiere ebbe, a Gaeta, un archetipo del sistema di difesa, fino ad oggi ritenuto collocabile nel 1532, mentre l’indagine di archivio e diretta in situ ha evidenziato che la prima costruzione nel territorio è datata al 1531, come osservato in una targa dedicatoria presente nei pressi della torre di S. Agostino.
Frutto di analisi puntuale sono le strutture che esistevano nel territorio tra Terracina e la foce del fiume Ga-rigliano, il loro stato di conservazione e i restauri che le hanno interessate.
Il lavoro culmina con una riflessione sul concetto di conservazione del rudero.

Proceedings of the Fortmed 2016. Volume 3

FORTMED 2016 is the International Conference on Modern Age Fortifications of the Mediterranean coast. This was the second edition following the first opening in Valencia in October 2015.
The conference took place on November 10th, 11th and 12th 2016, at the Dipartimento di Architettura (DiDA) of the Florence University (UNIFI).
The conference’s main objective is the exchange of knowledge and sharing for the better understanding, assessment, management and exploitation of culture and heritage that developed on the Mediterranean coast in the modern age, taking into account the wide distribution of these results. The Conference has an interdisciplinary aim where architects, engineers, archaeologists, historians, geographers, geologists, cartographers, heritage managers, tourism experts, experts in restoration-conservation and promotion of heritage will participate. The idea is to provide a more inclusive, more real and more up to date views, leading us to the point where we could find the investigations of this matter, in the twenty-first century.
The theme is centered on the fortifications of the western Mediterranean (Spain, France, Italy, Malta, Grece, Albania, Turkey, Cyprus, Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco, etc...) in the fifteenth to eighteenth centuries, although it does not exclude other countries and other fortifications from this era.

Lo studio approfondisce la conoscenza dei processi di antropizzazione del paesaggio costiero che si estende fra Civitavecchia, a nord, e Nettuno, a sud, focalizzando l’attenzione su segni morfologici, toponimi relativi alle forme del suolo, testimonianze archeologiche e architettoniche quali tracce, ancora visibili, di un territorio in trasformazione e di culture ormai cancellate dallo scorrere del tempo; segni ancora superstiti e non ancora del tutto alterati dalla ‘spontanea’ modificazione dell’area che ha provocato, soprattutto nel secolo trascorso, l’incontrollata espansione d’insediamenti urbani abusivi e la costruzione d’importanti infrastrutture. Il contributo indaga il complesso rapporto instauratosi tra valenze diverse del territorio costiero romano, oggi in una situazione tanto diversa dal passato ma ancora con segni fortemente leggibili. In relazione alla complessità del quadro d’insieme, sarebbe oggi ovvio pensare a un concetto di tutela che, nel campo d’ampliamento dell’ambito della conservazione e del restauro, riesca a coinvolgere beni culturali e ambientali diversi ma strettamente correlati tra loro che determinano i caratteri e le qualità del paesaggio.
The study analyzes the phases of anthropization of the coastal landscape between Civitavecchia, to the North, and Neptune, to the South, focusing attention on morphological evidences, toponyms, archaeological and architectural evidence, Roman roads, port structures, urban settlements, towers, farmhouses, such as traces, still visible, of a territory in transformation; signs still surviving and not altogether altered by the
anthropic transformation of the area that has determined, in the last century, the uncontrolled expansion and the construction of Fiumicino airport. The essay investigates the Ostia coastline which, since ancient times, has been ‘marked’ by the Tiber which, over time, has given rise to phenomena of advancing the coast with the transport of sediments and debris. A complex overview that should be protected by involving cultural and environmental assets, now closely related to each other to determine the characteristics and quality of the current landscape.

Il lavoro svolto ha voluto dimostrare che l’istituzione dell’Area Naturale Marina Protetta di Capo Carbonara, oltre agli indubbi vantaggi dal punto di vista ambientale, reca in sé benefici economici e sociali in una zona, il Sud-Est della Sardegna, che ha fatto del turismo vacanziero la primaria attività produttiva.

Il Torrione di Bitonto è una imponente struttura fortificata, che la Storiografia locale ha genericamente
attribuita alla fine del Trecento sulla base di un “Diploma” regio allusivo alla presenza in città di un
castellano, ma che, invece, dal punto di vista morfologico può essere più verosimilmente connessa alla
metà del XV secolo; in particolare la committenza di G. Ventimiglia e di M. Curiale, importanti famigli
del Re napoletano, va chiamata in causa per un manufatto, come quello bitontino, particolarmente
aggiornato alle prescrizioni della Trattatistica ossidionale moderna (di Leon Battista Alberti in
particolare) e a quanto si andava realizzando in Castelnuovo a Napoli. Verso la fine del secolo, poi, una
serie di disegni di F. di Giorgio Martini, presente in Puglia in diversi momenti, sembra testimoniare un
interessamento dell’Ingegnere senese all’aggiornamento del Torrione con sproni e casematte.

The aim of the current contribution, through the study of archival and iconographic sources, is to deepen typological characters and construction techniques, as well as the recovery and enhancement actions of some towers located in the Lazio coast, today mostly abandoned and disused. The study analyzes deepens the diversified anthropization processes of the Lazio coastal landscape, on the Tyrrhenian Sea, between Civitavecchia, to the North, and Terracina, to the South, focusing attention on the defensive towers on the coast. It is a rich and unique heritage, still mostly intact, within a territory widely modified by spontaneous urbanization of the past century which has caused the uncontrolled expansion of illegal settlements and the construction of important infrastructures, such as the international Fiumicino airport. A complex overview that should be protected by involving cultural and environmental assets, now closely related to each other to determine the characteristics and quality of the current landscape.

Este estudio, integrado dentro de una investigación más amplia sobre las técnicas constructivas de las torres costeras, se centra en algunas torres del norte de Cerdeña y del sur de Córcega, con el objeto de sacar a relucir las similitudes existentes entre ellas. De hecho, el bajo gasto, en los costes como en el tiempo de fabricación, la gran analogía debido a la posición geoestratégica de las dos islas y el hecho de encontrarse las dos fases constructivas principales dentro del mismo periodo cronológico, hacen que los dos sistemas defensivos sean rentablemente comparables en cuanto a técnicas y tecnologías constructivas.
La muestra objeto del presente estudio se ha evaluado sobre el evidente parecido apreciable incluso desde un punto de vista geométrico y tipologico. La elección ha sido confrontada también con fuentes de archivo y bibliográficas en las cuales se menciona el intercambio frecuente de trabajadores entre las dos partes. La comparación se logró a través de levantamientos, toma de muestras y documentación directa; en particular, se adquirieron datos sobre los macroelementos que constituyen la construcción (base, muros, cubierta), sobre las técnicas de elaboración de los materiales, su composición y su proceso constructivo. Los datos de las inspecciones in situ fueron recogidos en unas fichas con enfoque arqueológico, sin embargo moduladas según la especificidad del tema, y organizadas en una base de datos dinámica para establecer una relación fácil entre los monumentos estudiados.
La tesis inicial ha sido confirmada en gran parte. La gran similitud en los materiales, las dimensiones de los sillares de piedra y las técnicas constructivas, y además, la composición de los morteros llevan a afirmar que entre las dos islas se produjo un gran intercambio de saberes constructivos. Todo esto se traduce en unas manifestaciones de deterioro idénticas, proporcionándonos una valiosa información para futuras intervenciones de restauración.

This works has the goal to locate the organisation and the evolution of the systems of costal towers in
the Kingdom of Sardinia, integrated in the defence organization of the Spanish Kingdom. The
development of the defence system went through huge difficulties, including financial problems and
from the enemy attacks. This required many times, some work on the towers, to keep them in a good
state, or to solve other kind of problems, related to the use of bad materials and other illegitimate and
illegal actions. Some natural causes also where the reason for the deterioration of the defence and
military places, like natural causes or disasters, like for example, the earthquake in the 1616; a very rare
event for the island, that started in the coastline of Capo Carbonara and caused a lot of damages in 8
towers; reason why the administration had to find a quick solution.

The complex of Roccella, consisting of the ruins of the medieval castle, of the tower of Ventimiglia and of the underlying village, constitutes in the coastal territory of the Gulf of Termini Imerese the precious testimony of an articulated system of architectures which had, over the centuries, different functions. From the strategic control of the coast, to the defense and even to the agro/pastoral management of the territory, the functions that concentrated in this small monumental complex are different, including the presence of a coastal loading place, point of arrival and boarding of resources from inland. The first investigations allowed, at the moment, to highlight the environments and spaces of the so-called "medieval village", still fully vital, with its water mill and environments for the processing of agricultural products, at the end of the 19 th century. A circa 60 Km ad est di Palermo e 12 km ad Ovest di Cefalù, sulla costa tirrenica della Sicilia, si trova il complesso monumentale costituito dal castello e dalla torre, con l'adiacente borgo medievale. L'insediamento è situato alla foce del torrente Roccella, presso una piccola sporgenza rocciosa che si prolunga a mare rispetto al litorale sabbioso, al centro dell'ampio golfo chiuso ad Ovest da Termini Imerese e ad Est da capo Plaia. L'area occupata dalle emergenze monumentali occupa circa un ettaro, e si possono distinguere tre nuclei principali: sul promontorio roccioso si trovano i resti in rovina del castello, collegato a monte con la torre Roccella che sovrasta a NE il piccolo borgo medievale dove si sono concentrale le indagini oggetto di questo studio. L'avancorpo a mare del complesso è interessato dai resti murari di diversi ambienti e di strutture architettoniche che si possono identificare con il più antico nucleo del castello medievale, attestato nei documenti fin dal XII secolo. Tale importante area, oggi in totale rovina e in parte crollato a mare, non è stata mai oggetto di ricerche archeologiche. La torre dei Ventimiglia, restaurata di recente, nella sua configurazione attuale si può fare risalire al XV secolo

Nel programma di difesa del Regno di Napoli contro i Turchi, gli spagnoli idearono una linea di difesa affidata alle torri di avvistamento. Nella “Nuova Carta Geografica della Calabria Ulteriore”, stilata dall’ingegnere militare Luigi Ruel nel 1784, le torri appaiono intervallate da una sequenza di segni quadrangolari dislocati su tutto il perimetro litoraneo della provincia. Si tratta delle cosiddette “casette dei cavallari” destinate ad ospitare cavallari, pedoni e torrieri in servizio.

Il contributo analizza il sistema  difensivo delle torri di avvistamento costiero in terra d'Otranto. L'analisi, dopo un breve introduzione storica, si concentra sulla divisione tipologica, descrivendo con particolare attenzione le torri della serie di Nardò.

This study stems from the idea of highlighting the constructive affinities among the three towers of the Asinara Island, resulting from a unitary construction project. The research methodology identifies a multidisciplinary protocol based on a stratigraphic approach. With the aid of historical sources and petrographic and geochemical investigations, the sequence of the construction phases and stratigraphic units was identified for the towers. The results were compared in order to highlight common elements and significant differences in the typology and proportional relationships between the geometry and the constructive elements. The comparison also included material composition and masonry texture.
The results highlight several similarities among the three towers and confirm the initial thesis: the imprint due to the unitary construction project was of major importance in terms of construction choices and binds the three towers in a common thread.

One the most important features of European history in the XVI century is the military confrontation between the Spanish Crown, and the Ottoman Empire. However, during the last two decades, the two powers gradually lost interest in the Mediterranean, directing their attention to other geographical areas. Spain had to struggle to defend its precious trades along the routes which crossed the Atlantic Ocean from attacks by English and Dutch vessels.
Moving most of the fleet over to the Atlantic coast, meant that piracy in the Mediterranean immediately increased, having being contained for years as a result of the constant patrol of the coasts by the Spanish navy.
An evident consequence was that trade, especially to and from Sardinia, suffered badly. This brought to the completion of a static defence system, based on coastal towers, which had been started in the previous decades, and the creation of the Administracion del Real.
Between 1591 and 1599 twenty-six towers were built, and the same amount was built in the following decade, i.e. the years immediately after the founding of the institute for the Administration of the towers.
As well as building a considerable amount of watch towers and the reconstruction of the existing medieval ones, which were either unused or in a bad state, the Administration had to face growing costs: increased ammunition and new artillery for the towers, the distribution of weapons to civilians and stocking large quantities of grain to face possible dangers, such as sieges which could have been laid to towers or towns. All this was on top of the basic cost of the running of the defence system, such as the salaries, board and lodging for the soldiers and other people who worked on or for the towers.
Even if there were continuous rumours of the possibility of the mighty Turkish fleet preparing for an invasion of the Island, as well as strategic movements by the French navy, and in a later stage also Dutch and English corsairs, most of the problems along Sardinian coasts came from attacks by pirates from the Barbary Coast, which in the mean time had become more frequent.
Although the towers were not ultimately decisive in the overall defence system set up by the Crown, they did however represent some tangible advantages.
Firstly, the towers acted as a valid deterrent for enemy ships, and thanks to a visual communication system, they were able to give timely warnings to the main strongholds, while simultaneously giving the local population the opportunity to seek protection for themselves and their possessions.
Furthermore, there was a large number of towers along the coasts of the Island and they were administered by such an important institution as the Administracion del Real, which managed the whole running of the static defence system. Ultimately, this means that researchers have been left with a great quantity of useful documents.

The numerous similarities in geographical, historical and environmental contexts in which the coastal defence systems of Corsica and Sardinia were designed, suggest an interesting comparison. This juxtaposition, also corroborated by the fascinating possibility of an exchange of construction knowledge between the two islands, is the basis of this study. Given the many similarities highlighted in these buildings, it was decided to apply the same multidisciplinary research protocol to both. The multidisciplinary viewpoint, which takes advantage of the synergic contribution of specialised analyses, constitutes a valuable basis on which to understand the buildings' complexity. This methodology, based on the architectural and historical value of the monument, can contribute to generating a different approach to the restoration project. Moreover, it could be applied to the study of similar groups of monuments, in the same location or in other geographical contexts.

Uno dei più bei complessi masserizi dell’agro di Copertino è la masseria “la Torre”, sulla strada Nardò-Copertino, a pochi chilometri da quest’ultima, raggiungibile mediante strada interpoderale. Posta al centro di un territorio coltivato ad uliveto di antico impianto, confina a nord con la masseria Li Tumi, a ovest con proprietà Licastro, a sud con la linea ferroviaria, ad est con altra proprietà Licastro.
La peculiarità della sua forma, pur nella varietà delle tipologie masserizie salentine, è data nel nostro caso dall’imponenza del torrione, che rinvia al mastio e alle torri angolari  del cinquecentesco castello copertinese e particolarmente allo stile delle torri costiere a pianta quadrata della “serie di Nardò”.
Siamo molto propensi a considerarla opera dei neritini Spalletta, abili e avviati costruttori di svariate torri costiere in terra d’Otranto, ben inseriti tra i partitari del regno di Napoli. Nardo e Angelo Antonio Spalletta, padre e figlio, con certezza ne avevano realizzate due sull’Adriatico (Novaglie e Tricase) e ben undici sullo Ionio, delle quali sette nel tratto di costa di pertinenza del territorio di Nardò (Fiume, S. Caterina, dell’Alto, Uluzzo, S. Isidoro, Porto Cesareo, Castiglione) e quattro sul litorale tarantino (Borraco, Castelluccia, Tara e Saline).

This study presents the results of a reflection on the valorization of coastal towers and their surroundings. Although very valuable in terms of architecture and landscape, they nowadays are abandoned and in an advanced stage of decay.
This research starts from the different typologies proposed by Vittorio Faglia in 1973 in order to classify the costai towers of "Terra d'Otranto", including seven towers called "Serie di Nardò". Their distinctive role was established by studies and surveys: they were constructed both for coastal protection from pirates and the Turks and for the defense ofagricultural production. The area surrounding Nardò had a rich ofoil and wheat production: it was considered the principal source offood supply in the Salento regi on. The towers were central pieces of a complex communication and trade network with the fortified farms ofthe surroundings becoming the first line of defense.
Nowadays this connection with the tenritory is lost; many towers are abandoned and decayed. The present work proposes, in the framework of a thorough revitalization of the entire area, some intervention guidelines on the restoration of Torre Santa Caterina. In this project the latter would become centrai to the promotion of locai food and wine culture, reinterpreting these spaces as a communication canal that would remind the historical link between agriculture and the coastal towers. The idea would therefore be to articulate the conservation of the built environment with the introduction of some services such as a farmers' market where producers and consumers could meet directly, placing the towers at the center of a complex network of events aiming at the promotion ofthe territory.
The study calls for further research on this type of architecture. It also demonstrated the importance of conservation and restoratiton of landmark architectures for the region 's sustainable development.

La Torre del Ferro di Corigliano-Rossano, vicinissima alla frazione di Thurio, è situata nella piana di Sibari, tra il fiume Crati e la fiumara S. Marco. Torre del secolo XVII-XVIII, è collocata tra campi e acquitrini, inserita in una natura che ne esalta il fascino, dandole un alone di mistero.

Il testo propone una riflessione sulla riqualificazione degli edifici e dei luoghi ad essi contigui che, pur essendo molto significativi dal punto di vista paesaggistico e
rchitettonico, sono oggi in condizione di degrado ed abbandono. Il recupero ed il restauro delle torri costiere, se attuato con continuità su tutto il litorale e in sinergia tra le diverse amministrazioni locali, potrebbe contribuire sensibilmente alla riqualificazione del territorio e alla sua valorizzazione, fornendo nuovi spunti a favore di uno sviluppo economico ‘a Km zero’ e ad un turismo ecosostenibile della regione.
Nella proposta elaborata, la torre viene adibita a centro di promozione della cultura enogastronomica locale, nella piena interpretazione di questo spazio come un canale comunicativo che voglia ricordare l’antico legame tra l’agricoltura salentina ed il sistema delle torri costiere, quest’ultime, un tempo, caposaldo al contributo della difesa delle derrate alimentari. Da qui nasce inoltre l’idea di affiancare all’edificio storico altri servizi, come un mercato contadino, dove far incontrare direttamente consumatori e produttori. In questo modo, la torre di S. Caterina diventa il centro di un sistema più complesso di eventi e manifestazioni legate alla promozione della cultura enogastronomica locale.
Per ciò che concerne la conservazione della Torre, lo studio dei materiali delle tecniche costruttive e l’analisi del degrado hanno permesso di compiere delle scelte orientate al massimo rispetto di tutti quei segni testimoni del passaggio del tempo. Secondo questa prospettiva, i nuovi elementi architettonici necessari all’adeguamento funzionale, come parapetti e sistemi di risalita, sono stati pensati in modo tale da alterare il meno possibile la preesistenza.

The present study is part of wider research on the system of coastal towers in Sardinia aimed at investigating the material and construction features. Special emphasis was placed on the analysis of masonry techniques in the 16th and 17th century. This approach allowed us to achieve two different aims at the same time, that is: (1) to understand how a structure was made, and consequently to define a correct conservation project; (2) to identify typological and dimensional invariants referring to a specific geological context and period, able to represent ‘benchmarks’ that in the future can be useful tools for the comparison and dating of coeval structures, such as “minor architecture”, which are otherwise difficult to date. In the present paper, we examine 8 of the 105 towers, homogeneously distributed around the island. The selected cases synthesise common features and differences, referred to in any specific historical context. For the development of this study, a multidisciplinary protocol with an archaeometrical approach was adopted. Through cataloguing and the realisation of a GIS, it was possible to establish a dynamic comparison at several levels from the results obtained and then to arrive at a critical synthesis.

Il testo ripercorre la storia del territorio del  Parco della Riviera di Ulisse, attraverso l'indagine di alcuni dei beni culturali che al suo interno si trovano: l'edificioo ottagonale, di età romana, e il sistema di torri costiere che abbracciano tutto il territorio del Parco e i loro problemi di conservazione.


The text recalls the history of the territory of the Park of the Riviera of Ulysses, through the investigation of some of the cultural assets in its interior: the octagonal building, Roman age, and the system of coastal towers that embrace the whole territory Of the Park and their conservation problems.

FORTMED 2017 is the International Conference on Modern Age Fortifications of the Mediterranean coast.
The conference will take place on 26, 27 and 28 October 2017, at the San Vicente del Raspeig Campus of the University of Alicante (UA).
The conference´s main objective is to exchange and share knowledge, valorization, management and exploitation of the culture and heritage that was developed on the Mediterranean coast in the Modern Age.
The Conference has an interdisciplinary character, in which architects, engineers, archaeologists, historians, geographers, cartographers, heritage managers, tourism experts, restoration-conservation experts and heritage dissemination will participate. The idea is to contribute more integrative visions, more real, more current, that take us to the level where the research of this subject must be found, in the XXI century.
The themes are centered on Mediterranean fortifications (Spain, France, Italy, Malta, Croatia, Albania, Greece, Turkey, Cyprus, Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco, etc.) in the 15th to 18th centuries, including the rest of Mediterranean countries and the fortifications of this era that were built overseas (Cuba, Puerto Rico, the Philippines, Panama, etc.).
