It's common American folk wisdom, apparently started by Benjamin Franklin, that "time is money". You would expect a capitalist country, focused on finance, to worship the dollar and define time in terms of cash. It gives people a reason for working as much as possible, producing as much as possible, to make as much money as possible. We are all born with time on our hands, and a culture that uses our hands to make money. We serve the machine. It’s time for that to stop, and for people to start looking for the qualities of life that money cannot buy. These are the things that make life worth living, even if it does not make your life worth more money.

The issue of wealth disparities among countries with varying levels of natural resources has been a long-standing topic of debate. Despite numerous hypotheses proposed over the years, a new concept has recently emerged that is gaining traction among scholars. This concept, known as intangible wealth, is derived from a World Bank study and comprises non-material factors such as human capital, institutional efficiency, and effective governance. The intangible wealth hypothesis posits that these intangible factors play a crucial role in explaining the differences between poor and rich countries. By emphasizing the importance of intangible wealth, this concept challenges conventional notions of wealth that focus solely on natural resources and material assets. The reasons behind this, and how societies and entire economies develop by the degree of polygamy, are complex and intriguing. Is polygamy impoverishing or enriching? This research aims to answer these questions by exploring polygamy's underlying economic principles and long-term consequences. We believe this exploration will lead to a better empirical understanding of the broader societal functioning of contemporary non-polygamous cultures.
First, it is essential to note that polygamy allows favourable trait combinations to reproduce and disfavorable ones to die out. At the same time, the former mechanism also increases the genetic variance from which genetic advances arise. This work aims to show and explain that dual-process thinking like this (or multiple others) leads to a wealth-creation mechanism that interacts with a society's culture over time. Therefore, whichever preference for avoiding polygamy may exist is selected for by this interaction. We can repeat this same argument for the state of science and technology. Understanding current society also requires understanding how it developed and taking humans and their interactions seriously.

Can economically marginalised people and places become viable and sustainable in the mainstream economy? This practitioner-oriented book presents a convincing case that it is possible. Ratner's wealth creation approach will resonate with communities and government officials who are frustrated by the limited effectiveness of traditional economic and social service programmes. It is a process that is grounded in social science theory. It was implemented in a dozen rural communities in three economically depressed regions of the US (Central Appalachia, the Deep South, and the Lower Rio Grande Valley) during the Great Recession (2008-2015). The Ford Foundation and the Aspen Institute offered Ratner the opportunity to develop this wealth creation approach to economic development. The distinguishing features of the approach are: a broad vision of wealth; identifying underutilised assets of marginalised places; building bridges for cross-sector value chain participation and connecting with cross-regional entrepreneurial market opportunities (for scaling); and harnessing the power of market-driven investing for inclusion and sustainability rather than relying on grants and subsides. To a greater or lesser degree, every community has eight foundational forms of wealth: individual, social, intellectual, natural, built (infrastructure), political, cultural, and financial. Ratner's framework starts with an assessment of this wealth as it exists in a community. This assessment is used as a wealth matrix to identify underutilised resources (e.g. small farms, vacant buildings, unemployed youth, manufacturing waste, etc.) and find ways to develop these. This is facilitated by a trained value chain coordinator. The primary aim is to link a community's underutilised assets with market opportunities to create income so both the community and investors gain. Over time, these actions result in changing systems to achieve inclusion of marginalised people, resilient rural communities, and sustainable economies. The wealth creation approach focuses on building bridges for cross-sector value chain participation. A value chain includes the business activities and processes that create and market a product or service to meet demand. In a conventional value chain, every player is focused on her/his own interests, working independently, and at arms-length from others. A wealth creation value chain is a horizontal cross-sector integration of multiple businesses and organisations that are often small and must be aggregated. By definition, the value chain is functionally divided into four types of partners: transactional (handle the product or service); supporting (assist with training, insurance, financing, etc., to enable the value chain to operate); demand (businesses and organisations that serve the end consumer); and investment (land trusts, cooperatives, employee ownership, impact investors, etc.) The glue that holds the value chain partners together is the realisation that collective interdependency is needed if they are to profit from entrepreneurial market opportunities. For example, small rural farms producing for regional markets would need partners to grow produce that meet market standards as well as transport, warehouse, grade, package, and market the product. Extractive mining provides resources that are socio-economically deemed essential to the basic needs of civilisation, a technology industry, and a 'developed' and 'urbanised' world that most of us labour and live within. Across the globe, mining contributes to erosion, sinkholes, deforestation, loss of biodiversity, significant use of water resources, dammed rivers and ponded waters, wastewater disposal issues, acid mine drainage and contamination of soil, ground and surface water, all of which can lead to health issues in local populations. Overall, erosion, flooding, deforestation and the contamination and consumption of ground and surface waters all act as stressors on the health of local communities, depleting food production capacities and delivering harmful elements into the food chain. In addition, industrial mining displaces local communities rendering them displaced, deskilled, and devalued thereby constructing poverty and raw material towards exploited and urbanised labour.

'Intergenerational equity of wealth' is a concept endorsed, advocated and propagated by 'The Goenchi Mati Movement' and 'Goa Foundation' in Goa (as a pilot case study) with its proposed impact across the extractive mining regions of India. This proposition is a concerted invidious strategy to undermine the entire philosophy of indigenous and ecological movements. Not only is this a socially dangerous, inequality-propagating proposition and Brahmanised greenwash. This premise threatens the livelihoods of tribal and other dispossessed and displaced, further perpetuating an increased marginalisation and impoverishing communities through its proposed five-point agenda. This is an attempt to fix a legacy hierarchy, ownership of land and maintain caste tradition. Thus this Goenchi Mati and Goa Foundation agenda remains a perversion and distortion of the ancient Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) seventh-generation principle and philosophy. This essay will attempt to understand and gauge the primary propositions, the possibilities of intent and the impact of this proposed resolution of 'intergenerational equity of wealth'. To understand this conceptual proposition it is important to deconstruct this, to its individual thread of ideas with a critical intimacy, as a construction, to offer us a way out of the closure and erasure of knowledge.

Exploring the multifaceted history of dispossession, consumption, and inequality in West Central Africa, Mariana P. Candido presents a bold revisionist history of Angola from the sixteenth century until the Berlin Conference of 1884–5. Synthesising disparate strands of scholarship, including the histories of slavery, land tenure, and gender in West Central Africa, Candido makes a significant contribution to ongoing historical debates. She demonstrates how ideas about dominion and land rights eventually came to inform the appropriation and enslavement of free people and their labour. By centring the experiences of West Central Africans, and especially African women, this book challenges dominant historical narratives, and shows that securing property was a gendered process. Drawing attention to how archives obscure African forms of knowledge and normalize conquest, Candido interrogates simplistic interpretations of ownership and pushes for the decolonization of African history.

This case commentary appears in a special issue of SAIPAR Case Review in honor of Zambia's Chief Justice Mumba Malila. Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema appointed Malila as Chief Justice on 17 November 2021 and sworn him into office on 22 December 2021.

The court case in question, Chrismar Hotel Ltd v Stanbic Bank Zambia, dramatizes the bank charges that most depositors are smacked with. Interest, overdraft charges, extension charges, restructuring fee, late charges, base rate, default interest, compound interest…

This case illustrates how bank charges can undermine freedom of contract – this sacrosanct principle of contract law and commercial law. Freedom of contract undergirds the market economy, as opposed to an economy ruled by command from above, the state. And two tenets of the Zambian legal system are precisely ‘private initiative’ and ‘wealth’ creation.

Hopefully, Malila JS will carry over the keen sense of context and synthesis he displayed in Chrismar Hotel into the Constitutional Court that he now heads as Zambia’s new Chief Justice. Though he did not extend this sense of context to society’s economic dimensions in that judgment, the man who chairs the Constitutional Court will have a golden opportunity to shape fundamental questions and zoom in on their many aspects, not least of which the economy. To foreshadow such broader perspective, this commentary imagines how the court in Chrismar Hotel could have justified the outcome of that case had it weighed in on the consequences of heavy bank charges for commerce and society.

This study examined the benefits in the reorientation of teacher education towards job creation. The study adopted the descriptive design. Fourty seven (47) items questionnaires on Identification of benefits that necessitate the reorientation of teacher education towards job creation (IBNRTETJC) were used for data collection. A total of five hundred (500) copies of questionnaires were distributed and four hundred and eighty one (483) copies were retrieved which formed the sample size of the study. Five research questions were raised to guide the study. The data were analyzed using mean and standard deviation while t-test was used to test the hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. The finding showed that high level of unemployment, poverty, need for job creation, lack of creative and innovative abilities among trained teachers in Rivers State make the demand for reorientation of teacher education to accommodate wealth creation. Based on the findings, recommendations are made among them are: there should be paradigm shift from theoretical teaching to practical application of knowledge, Curriculum planners should consider wealth creating plans in teacher training institutions.
