What do they replace and why?

Pro C901 and Pro C901S are second generation print engines.
They replace the successful Pro C900 and Pro C900S, building
on the strengths of the original engines to deliver higher
quality output onto a wider range of media for longer periods
of time. The aim is to provide customers in the graphic arts
market with reliable solutions which deliver best-in-class
performance and quality.

How are they configured and what options are there?

Pro C901 is a colour production printer. Pro C901S is a colour production printer and copier. Although the engines
are based on the same print engine and share many of the same peripheral options, there is no upgrade path from
the Pro C901 to the Pro C901S. Print functionality is provided via one of three optional print servers. Pro C901S is
supplied with a 4000 sheet SRA3 LCT as standard. This unit is an option for Pro C901.

5. Configuration
Hardware Configuration

There are two products. Pro C901 is a colour production printer. Pro C901S is a colour production printer with
integrated scanner function. There is no upgrade path from Pro C901 to Pro C901S. If copy and scan functionality
is likely to be required, Pro C901S must be selected at the outset.

Neither machine is equipped with a print server as standard. This is because there are external EFI and Creo
print servers to choose from. It is necessary to select a print server as the machine will not function without this
essential ‘option’.

A GBC Stream Punch Pro, Z-folding unit, cover interposer and buffer pass can be attached in combination with
other finishing options. The Z-folding unit must be attached in combination with a 3,000 sheet standard finisher or
booklet finisher.

For a better understanding of configuation rules, sales people are advised to use the configurator tool in the Ricoh
Product Portal. The tool uses intuitive flash animation to show working configurations of equipment. To assist with
spacial planning, the tool also describes the dimensions of the configured engine. Configuration rules are also
covered in the machine and options EDP code list (overleaf).

10. Where Ricoh Production Colour Fits - Case Studies
Pro C900 series, the predecessor to the Pro C901 Graphic Arts Edition series, won critical acclaim from customers
in production print environments. The following case studies briefly describe how customers are using Ricoh
production printers and the benefits they gain from them. Full versions of the case studies are available in PDF
format via the Business Driver website and can be shared with potential customers.

Abbey Print: Cross-Press Calibration Delivers Digital Advantage

Abbey Print uses a Ricoh Pro C900s digital press to produce consistent, high quality colour print
collateral. The Ricoh device, which is calibrated to match the colour output from Abbey Print’s Komori
presses, is used for short run production work and as a proofing press.

The Ricoh device combines print and copy functionality - the

latter being important as it allows Abbey Print to meet walk-
up demand for copy services - and can print onto coated
heavyweight SRA3 stock, producing immaculate 1200 dpi
resolution output at a rate of 90 impressions a minute. To
ensure that print from the Ricoh digital press matched that of the
offset presses, Ricoh installed a colour management tool called
Ready4Print ColourServer. A profile was created for each Abbey
Print’s presses. Print output is validated against the target profile.
The solution eliminated the need to manage colour at the digital
front end of several different presses.

The Ricoh Pro C900s is used to great effect by Abbey Print.

The quality, speed and versatility of the Ricoh solution allows
Abbey Print to use digital print for a wid range of applications.
Paul Houghton, a director at Abbey Print explained: “The Ricoh
Pro C900s prints onto the same media as we run through our
offset presses. Colour output from the Pro C900s is superb;
indistinguishable from that produced on the Komori presses. We
use the Ricoh Pro C900s to print short run colour critical work
that would, in the past, have been printed at higher cost on an
offset litho press”.

Colour proofing was an unexpected bonus. According to Paul

Houghton, colour proofs produced on the Ricoh Pro C900s
are of “litho quality and 100% accurate”. Using the Ricoh Pro
C900s, Abbey Print is able to produce one-off print samples
which are stitched and trimmed to show the customer exactly
what the finished job will look like. The process is fast and
effective, and the proofing service is appreciated by customers.

Some customers use Abbey Print for bureau printing services.

The Ricoh solution is helping Abbey Print meet the needs of those
customers more efficiently too. Documents are often provided in
native formats such as Microsoft Word. Using resident imposition
software Abbey Print is able to produce smartly presented output
without having to open and manipulate the original document.

Evolution Print: High-Quality Digital Output on Offset Substrates

Evolution Print, winner of PrintWeek magazine’s Innovative Printer of the Year 2009 Award, uses a
Ricoh Pro C900 production printer. The Ricoh device is used to print high-quality sales and marketing
collateral on offset substrates.

Integrated into Evolution Print’s Prinergy workflow, the Pro C900

is managed in the same way as Evoltion Print’s other presses.
Prinergy software determines how to process, impose and output
files for automatic processing, routing PDF files and JDF job
tickets to the appropriate device. Running virtually non-stop -
toner and paper are replenished on the fly - the Pro C900 has
increased the speed at which digital print is produced, expanding
capacity at Evolution Print.

A key purchase criteria for Evolution Print was the need to produce
consistent high-grade colour output with excellent front-to-back
registration on standard offset substrates. Extensive testing proved
that the Ricoh device was capable of producing colour print of
exceptional quality. According to Evolution Print’s sales director,
Graham Congreve, “The quality of colour print produced by the
Ricoh Pro C900 was better than that of other devices tested. The
registration was perfect and Ricoh was able to provide profiled
settings for various offset substrates.”

The Ricoh print solution is having a positive impact on Evolution

Print’s sales turnover. Commercial manager Julie Rice explained
that the Ricoh device has given her the confidence to sell digital
print services, saying: “The quality of print onto offset stock is
exceptional. You would struggle to see a difference between print
produced on an offset press and that output from the Ricoh Pro
C900.” Graham Congreve added: “Customers are increasingly
look for a same day service. The Ricoh Pro C900 is helping us to
meet that need.”

Acquiring a Ricoh Pro C900 production printer has proved a wise

investment for Evolution Print. The machine is robust, reliable
and easy to use. Unlike conventional presses, the Ricoh Pro
C900 does not require a dedicated operator. According to Graham
Congreve, “We know how to impose print. Provided there is
paper in the Ricoh Pro C900, anyone can print to it.” The Ricoh
is left to run with minimum supervision, releasing staff for other
work. Ricoh’s remote management tool, @Remote, enables Ricoh
to provide fast and effective servicing which safeguard reliable
performance and maximises uptime.

Port of Rotterdam: Digital Workflow Streamlines In-house Production

Ricoh production printers and workflow software helped Port of Rotterdam take control of document
production; improving the management of promotional literature which is crucial to commercial
activities and reducing the organisation’s reliance on external printers.

Havenbedrijf Rotterdam NV - Port of Rotterdam - promotes its

commercial activities in print, using fact sheets and brochures
to communicate with existing and potential customers. Until
recently, much of the promotional literature was produced
externally. Outsourcing print production was expensive and the
organisation had little control over the supply of promotional
literature. Brochures were ordered in bulk and stored in a
warehouse, and when new printed material was required, there
would sometimes be production delays.

To gain control over the process, production was brought in-house.

Ricoh installed two Pro C900 colour production printers and a Pro
907EX monochrome production printer. The equipment, configured
with in-line binding and booklet making facilities, is supported with
web-to-print software. Incredibly fast, all three Ricoh production
printers operate at a speed of 90 pages a minute, providing a
combined print capacity of in excess of 16,000 pages an hour. The
Pro C900 colour production printers are hugely versatile and can
print in colour and/or black-and-white onto a wide variety of media,
including card and coated stock.

Using the Ricoh solution, Port of Rotterdam is able to produce

all print collateral in-house; improving the speed of turnaround,
eliminating stock of pre-printed material and reducing production
costs. The combination of high-speed printers, in-line finishing
equipment and digital production software provides a simple
automated workflow. Commenting on the equipment, Willem
Ponk, head of facilities services said: “The colour print quality is
up there with the very best. The Ricoh Pro C900 colour printers
produce stable, high quality colour output which meets ISO
graphic standards, allowing us to produce promotional material,
such as fact sheets and brochures, in-house”.

“Most print processes are automated. The high degree of

computerisation achieved with the web-to-print software helps
improve efficiency and reduce cost. Where staff used to pass
documents to us by hand, they now send print from their
workstations, using a digital order form which contains all the
information needed to process the job.” Leo Geelhoed, a senior
machine operator added: “The print finishing facilities are highly
effective and easy to use. Where we used to complete most
finishing processes by hand, using small machines, all folding
and stapling is now done in-line. Brochures, for instance, can be
guillotined on three sides for a professional finish.”
