13

MAGNESIUM CITRATE SOLUTION

I. Objective: To prepare Magnesium Citrate Solution

II. Materials:
Anhydrous Citric Acid Beaker
Lemon Oil Bottle with Stopper
Magnesium Carbonate Bunsen Burner
Potassium Bicarbonate Filter Paper
Purified Water Funnel
Syrup Mettler Balance
Talc Mortar and Pestle
Sterilized Cotton
III. Formula:
Magnesium carbonate …………………………………….. ..15.0 g
Anhydrous citric acid ……………………………………….. .27.4 g
Potassium bicarbonate ……………………………………..... 2.5 g
Syrup …………………………………………………………..60.0 mL
Talc ………………………………………………………………5.0 g
Lemon Oil ……………………………………………………….0.1 mL
Purified water, to make. ……………………………………..350 mL

IV. Compounding Procedures:

1. Weigh and measure the ingredients accurately.


2. Dissolve anhydrous citric acid in 21 mL purified water in a beaker. (Solution A)
3. Slowly add magnesium carbonate, previously dissolved in 14 mL of purified water. (Solution B)
4. Stir the two mixtures until dissolved.
5. Then add syrup, heat the mixed solutions to boiling point for 2 minutes, set aside.
6. Immediately add the lemon oil, previously triturated with talc.
7. Filter the mixture while hot into a strong bottle of suitable capacity required.
8. Add boiled purified water to make the product measure the required volume.
9. Use sterilized cotton as a stopper for the bottle and allows the mixture to cool.
10. Add potassium bicarbonate and immediately stopper the bottle securely.
11. Shake the bottle occasionally until potassium bicarbonate is dissolved.
12. Place in an appropriate container.
13. Label the container.

Preparation No. 14

DAKIN’S SOLUTION

I. Objective: To prepare Dakin’s Solution

II. Materials:
Chlorox Alcohol
Sodium bicarbonate P. Water
Clean Water Stirring Rod

III. Formula:
Chlorox ……………………………………………………………...6.0 mL
Sodium bicarbonate ………………………………………………0.2 g
Clean tap water, q.s. to make………………………………........60 mL

IV. Compounding Procedures:

1. Measure 30 mL of tap water.


2. Boil for 15 minutes.
3. Add 0.1 g of sodium bicarbonate.
4. Add 3mL of chlorox.
5. Place in a sterile container.
6. Wrap bottle with aluminium foil.

Preparation No. 15

SIMPLE SYRUP

I. Objective: To prepare Simple Syrup.

II. Materials:
Sucrose Beaker
Purified Water Bunsen Burner
Cotton
Mettler Balance

III. Formula:

Sucrose ………………………………………………………..850 g
Purified water, to make ………………………………………1000 mL

IV. Compounding Procedures:

1. Weigh 850 g of sucrose.


2. Heat 420 mL of distilled water until boiling.
3. Add the sucrose and continue heating while stirring until the sucrose is dissolved.
4. Filter the syrup through cotton.
5. Rinse the container with small portion of water and add the rinse by passing through the filter
until the product measures the desired quantity.
6. Cool the syrup.
7. Place in an appropriate container.
8. Label properly.

Note: Reserve for Preparations No. 25, 26, 29, 35 and 36.
