Captopril Suspension - POST LAB

1. What are the reasons for preparing suspensions?

- Suspensions are important in fulfilling the needs of patients who do not have their
needed dose available commercially, or who cannot swallow capsules and tablets. Such
patients include infants, children, and geriatrics.

2. Define and differentiate dispersed phase from dispersing phase, and give
examples for each.
- The two components that make up a suspension, which is a two-component system, are
the dispersion phase and the dispersed phase. The dispersed phase contains particles
that are evenly distributed across the dispersion medium. One of the most significant
differences between a scattered phase and a dispersion medium is that the dispersed
phase is a discontinuous phase, whereas the dispersion medium is a continuous
medium. The starch solution and milk of magnesia are two examples of this, in which the
dispersed phases are magnesium hydroxide and starch, respectively, while the
dispersion phase is water.
3. Give examples of official and commercial oral suspensions and their uses.
● Carbamazepine Oral Suspension
○ It is used to control seizures caused by certain types of epilepsy and treat
nerve related pain.
● Phenytoin Oral Suspension, USP
○ It is an anticonvulsant or antiepileptic drug that prevents and controls
seizures.
● Amoxicillin Oral Suspension
○ It is used in treating infections caused by bacteria. It can also be taken
with other medicines to treat stomach ulcers.
● Diazoxide Oral Suspension
○ It is used to treat hypoglycemia.

4. What are the basic components of suspensions? Give example of each

The dispersed phase is the solute which is an insoluble solid with large particles
above 100 mm in diameter that is suspended in the dispersion medium. Examples of
dispersed phases are carbamazepine and phenytoin.

The continuous phase, also known as the dispersion medium, is a liquid solvent that
serves as the vehicle in which the particles are dispersed. Water and ethanol are two
examples of such.

Finally, a dispersing agent, also known as a suspending agent, is a surface-active

chemical that aids particle separation and inhibits clumping. Methylcellulose and
sodium alginate are examples of suspending agents.
