What is rests?

Before we proceed to our activity we


will discuss first the notes and the
rest.

Notes – are building blocks of music. They are


symbols that denote pitch (highness or lowness)
and rhythm( long and short sounds.) Duration
refers to how long or short a note is held or
played. A note composed of head, stem, flag or
hook.

Five Kinds of Notes.


Whole Notes- represent by a hallow head and is
shaped like an oval. It has the longest time value
of four beats.

Half Notes- also has a hallow head shaped like an


oval is two beats or half the value of a wh0le
notes.

Quarter Notes- has a shaded head with a stem


attached to the right side of the head. The length
of sound is one beat or one fourth of the
duration of a whole note.

Eight Notes- Has a shaded head with a stem on


the right and a hook attached to it. The length
sound is one-half; or one eight of the duration of
a whole note.

Sixteen Notes- has a shaded head with a stem


and a double hook attached to it. To length of
sounds is one –fourth, or one sixteenth of the
value of a whole notes.

Groups of eight sixteenth notes can be connected


with a beam instead of using a hook.

Kinds of Rests and Their Time Values


Rests denote silence. They add beauty to the
musical composition and give the performer time
to relax or take a deep breath in a performance.

Whole rest- is a filled in rectangle placed beneath


a line on a staff. The length silence of a whole
rest is four beats.

Half rest- is filled in rectangle placed a top a line


on a staff. The length of silence of a half half rest
is two beats or half of e value of a whole rest.
Quarter rest look like a field in squiggle. The
length of silence of a quarter rest is one beat, or
one fourth of the value of a whole rest.

Eight rest- is a slanted stem with a flag of the left.


The length of silence of an eighth rest is one half
beat or one eighteenth of the value of the whole
rest.

Sixteen rest- is a slanted stem with a double flag


on the left. The length of silence of a sixteenth
rest is one-fourth beat or one-sixteen of the value
of a whole note
