Copper-resistant strains of Xanthomonas campestris pv. juglandis occur in walnut orchards throughout northern California. The copper resistance genes from a copper-resistant strain C5 of X. campestris pv. juglandis were cloned and located on a 4.9-kb ClaI fragment, which hybridized only to DNA of copper-resistant strains of X. campestris pv. juglandis, and was part of an approximately 20-kb region which was conserved among such strains of X. campestris pv. juglandis. Hybridization analysis indicated that the copper resistance genes were located on the chromosome. Plasmids conferring copper resistance were not detected in copper-resistant strains, nor did mating with copper-sensitive strains result in copper-resistant transconjugants. Copper resistance genes from X. campestris pv. juglandis shared nucleotide sequence similarity with copper resistance genes from Pseudomonas syringae pv. tomato, P. syringae, and X. campestris pv. vesicatoria. DNA sequence analysis of the 4.9-kb fragmen...

The resonance fluorescence of thin crystal films is studied by the method of Heitler and Ma, with the resonant interaction between the crystal and the radiation field properly taken into account in a nonperturbative way. Owing to the violation of the lattice symmetry by the thin film geometry, it is found that not only the usual polariton type eigenstates characteristics of a bulk crystal cannot be found, but the crystal film once excited by the absorption of a photon will fluoresce with a superradiatively enhanced rate as a consequence of the coherent action of the atoms within roughly a wavelength of each other. Absorption and emission spectra are given explicitly.

Minimal invasive surgery using a laparoscopic or thoracoscopic approach for cardiomyotomy (Heller myotomy) has become a widely accepted procedure to treat achalasia of the esophagus. In this study, we evaluated the long-term results of Heller myotomy achieved by performing video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS). We recruited patients with achalasia who had undergone VATS for Heller myotomy from 1991 to 2000 at the National Taiwan University Hospital. The myotomy was performed 6 cm above and 1 cm below the gastroesophageal junction. No fundoplication was performed during the procedure. The symptom score, which included dysphagia, regurgitation, and chest pain, was evaluated before and after surgery. Body weight was also recorded before and after surgery. The cases of 14 patients (4 men, 10 women) were studied. The mean patient age was 41.8 +/- 4.9 years. No postoperative mortality or morbidity was found in these patients. The follow-up duration was 56 +/- 7.17 months. The dysphasia score improved from 3.0 preoperatively to 0.79 +/- 0.30 postoperatively (p=0.001). The reflux score improved from 2.64 +/- 0.17 preoperatively to 0.50 +/- 0.20 postoperatively (p=0.001). All the improvements were still in place at the time of the most recent follow-up examinations. Heller myotomy to treat achalasia using a thoracoscopic approach can provide satisfactory long-term results.

Sialyl Lewis antigens (sLe(x/a)) are cancer-associated carbohydrate determinants, serve as ligands of the selectin family and are associated with hematogenous metastasis of cancer. So far, the clinicopathologic values of sialyl Lewis x (sLe(x)) and sialyl Lewis a (sLe(a)) in lung cancer have remained controversial. Using immunohistochemistry, the expressions of sLe(x) and sLe(a) antigens, and an airway mucin (MUC5AC) protein, which was supposed to be the major carrying protein of sialyl Lewis moieties, were studied in surgically resected tumor tissues of 61 patients with stages I or II NSCLC. Thirty-two (52.5%) of the 61 studied subjects were found to be positive for expression of sLe(a), 40 (65.6%) were positive for expression of sLe(x), and 16 (26.2%) were positive for MUC5AC protein. Both the expression of sLe(x) and MUC5AC were associated with adenocarcinoma subtype. Patients bearing tumors with MUC5AC and/or sLe(x) expression had a higher probability of post-operative distant metastasis. Survival analysis demonstrated that patients bearing tumors with expression of sLe(x) antigen or MUC5AC had shorter overall survival. The multivariate logistic regression showed that age >65 years old (OR = 0.207, 95% CI = 0.075-0.569, P = 0.002), nodal status (OR = 6.575, 95% CI = 2.459-17.583, P < 0.001), and MUC5AC (OR = 5.545, 95% CI = 1.998-15.386, P = 0.001) were independent factors affecting survival. We concluded that the expression of sLe(x) was related to MUC5AC protein, while patients with tumors co-expressing both MUC5AC and sLe(x) antigen had the worst survival.

True stress and strain components at a notch are the essential parameters for fatigue life predictions. Nonlinear finite element analysis (FEA) could be the perfect solution to the notch stress and strain calculation, but its usage may be very limited due to intensive CPU time consumption. Estimation techniques for the multiaxial notch stresses and strains from linear FEA results are important and needed. The existing approach—the Hoffmann and Seeger theory—is limited for monotonic loading cases. It appears difficult to extend its application to nonproportional and variable amplitude loading cases. A generalized method for estimating multiaxial notch stresses and strains on the basis of elastic stress solutions is presented here. This method utilizes a two-surface model with the Mroz hardening equation and the associated flow rule to simulate the local notch stress and strain responses for any geometrical constraints of specimens under monotonic, in-phase and out-of-phase loading. In today's industry environment, the need to accelerate product development schedules requires that engineers actively engage simulation models to eliminate iterations from the design and test process. Much time is spent on the design for and evaluation of component reliability and durability. If accurate descriptions of the fatigue behaviour of materials are available, then simulation software can be used to simulate component durability and thus provide insight to design flaws more quickly than can the design and test cycle. A method is presented that facilitates the development of accurate statistical strain-life curves given experimental data from strain controlled uni-axial fatigue tests. The method establishes a series of selection criteria that ensure that the data used in the statistical analysis is significant and representative of the materials true behaviour. The method goes on to establish a procedure for the statistical analysis that ensures that each domain of the materials behaviour is accurately represented. The result is an R50 strain-life curve that is then scaled to an R90C90 strain-life curve by incorporating a technique presented by Shen and Wirsching. This R90C90 curve represents a strain-life curve that encapsulates the behaviour of 90% of samples of a material and in which 90% confidence exits. This R90C90 curve is then suitable for use in industrial simulation software.

The great magnetic storm of April 6–7, 2000 generated ionospheric disturbances in the west Pacific region. Two ionosondes at Wuhan (30.6°N, 114.4°E) and Chung-Li (24.9°N, 121°E) observed the ionosphere during this period. The variations of the ionospheric parameters, NmF2 (plasma density of the F-peak), hmF2 (height of the F-peak) and h′F (minimum virtual height of the F-layer), show that a traveling atmospheric disturbance (TAD) affects the ionosphere at middle and low latitudes in this region. The propagation velocities deduced from the time delay of hmF2 and h′F recorded at the two stations are about 655 and 164 m/s, respectively. Furthermore, a method of deriving the vertical phase and group velocities is applied to the sequences of virtual heights at fixed sounding frequencies. The vertical and associated meridional velocities demonstrate that the upward motions of the ionospheric plasma are caused by a TAD.

Online computer gaming is growing at a rapid pace. However, this phenomenon is stigmatised by many negative connotations. This study investigated the influence of intangibility on perceived risks (social, time, financial, physical, performance and psychology) among online gamers. The self-completed market survey questionnaire employs the Intangibility and Perceived Risk scales. Data were gathered in Taipei city, the biggest metropolitan areain Taiwan. Both public (1018) and online (400) voluntary interviews were conducted. The collected data were analysed with a structural equation model. There is a significant positive relationship between intangibility and alldimensions of perceived risk. The findings have managerial implications and future research is suggested.

The charge carrier transport efficiency and issues of patterning in organic semiconductors limit the potential range of microelectronic and optoelectronic applications of organic devices in nanoscale. We demonstrate high-performance organic field-effect transistors (OFETs) with a mobility of approximately 2.5 cm2/V s using nanogroove gate-dielectrics formed by nanoimprinting. The preferred flow of charge carriers in OFETs parallel to the nanogrooves yields a high mobility anisotropic ratio (above 220), providing a built-in autopattern organic semiconductor function with nanoscale resolution. This nanostructure embedded device has great potential for use in the manufacture and lithography-free patterning of organic semiconductor films in integrated circuits.

The influences of pattern size and etching depth of patterned sapphire substrates (PSSs) on crystal quality and light output power of light-emitting diodes (LEDs) were investigated by contact-transferred and mask-embedded lithography. The present results indicate that a smaller pattern size facilitates superior light extraction efficiency. However, a suitable pattern size and etching depth should be chosen to obtain the highest quality of GaN film. In comparison with the conventional sapphire substrate, the largest light output enhancement (˜28.9%) was observed when the pattern diameter and the etching depth of PSS were 400 and 400 nm, respectively.
