The aim of this study is to find out how women from different ethnic origins who came to the world in the same culture and lived within the same geographical boundaries point of view about polygamy and whether there is a difference in the direction of affirmation or negativity. The basic questions appropriate for the purpose of study were prepared in advance and new questions were also generated according to the response given by each participant to the questions, the researcher asked during the interview. Face-to-face interviews were conducted with 32 Syrian women of four different ethnic origins who lived in the same geographical borders as Arab, Turkmen, Circassian and Kurdish between the ages of 18-45 and who ...

Emerging macroscale analyses forecast billions of social media user accounts from deceased persons in the current century. What happens to digital remains of persons once they cease to exist physically? Digital death, or its absence in the case of deceased individuals, becomes a challenge for both data availability and veracity, and confound research and public health services. Data (im)mortality and digital death are also relevant for research on past events of significance for public health, for example, to discern the history of pandemics and ecological threats. This article examines and calls for new ways of thinking about digital death and thanatechnology as integral dimensions of digital transformation in medicine, new media studies, and society in the 21st century.

In a digital society, shall we be the authors of our own experience, not only during our lifetime but also after we die? We ask this question because dying and bereavement have become even harder, and much less private, in the digital age. New big data-driven digital industries and technologies are on the rise, with promises of interactive 3D avatars and storage of digital memories of the deceased, so they can continue to exist online as the “living dead” in a digital afterlife. Famous rock and roll icons like Roy Orbison, Frank Zappa, Ronnie James Dio, and Amy Winehouse have famously been turned into holograms that can once again give “live” performances on the touring circuit, often pulling in large audiences. Death studies, dying, and grief have become virtual in the 21st century. We live in truly unprecedented times for human-computer interactions. Thanatology is the scientific study of death, dying, loss, and grief. In contrast to the biological study of biological aging (cellular senescence) and programmed cell death (apoptosis), thanatology employs multiple professional lenses, medical, psychological, physical, spiritual, ethical, descriptive, and normative. In 1997, Carla Sofka introduced the term thanatechnology as “technological mechanisms such as interactive videodiscs and computer programs that are used to access information or aid in learning about thanatology topics.” Onward to 2021, the advent of social media, the Internet of Things, and sensors that digitize and archive nearly every human movement and experience are taking thanatechnology, and by extension, digital transformation, to new heights. For example, what happens to digital remains of persons once they cease to exist physically? This article offers a critical study and snapshot of this nascent field, and the “un-disciplinary” sociotechnical issues digital thanatechnologies raise in relation to big data. We also discuss how best to critically govern this new frontier in systems science and the digital society. We suggest that new policy narratives such as (1) the right to nonparticipation in relation to information and communication technologies and (2) the planetary public goods deserve further attention to democratize thanatechnology and big data. To the extent that systems science often depends on data from online platforms, for example, in times of pandemics and ecological crises, “critical thanatechnology studies,” introduced in this article, is a timely and essential field of scholarship with broad importance for systems science and planetary health.

Bourdieu speaks of durable networks of social relationships in his conceptualizations of social capital. He notes that social capital is not independent from other forms of capital such as economic, physical, and cultural (e.g., education) capital. Traditionally, attaining social capital had a “high entry threshold,” requiring time for cultivation, as well as the other forms of capital already mentioned. In the current interconnected, hyperkinetic age of Web 2.0, however, physical distances and temporal dimensions among persons have diminished with social media and professional networking programs such as Skype, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Facebook. These programs have no or low entry threshold to build social capital rapidly, and certainly do not require a person to have significant economic and cultural capital, let alone a great deal of competence in science, technology, or ethics. Acquisition and accumulation of social capital have thus been tremendously facilitated by Web 2.0. It is interesting to note that the current grant system also encourages low entry thresholds and at times forced collaborations; for example, big grant consortia demand that large numbers of people collaborate on a project.

The  fact  that  digital  publishing  platforms  have surpassed  traditional  broadcasting  to  a  great  extent in  the  recent  period  reveals  new  broadcaster-viewer profiles. In particular, the evolution of YouTube from a standard video platform to a digital publishing platform has significantly increased the speed of transformation in publishing. YouTubers, which can be defined as the new digital publishers that emerged with this transformation of YouTube, cause the formation of a new audience profile in the audience dimension. It YouTube, as well as all over the world and in Turkey since last 15 years has meaning in mass rapid growth. Especially the adoption by the young generation and the dynamic nature of social media cause this new publisher profile to become even more famous and turn into opinion leaders. From now on, young people determine the material they will use while making make-up, political, scientific, etc. topics they will talk about in the environment of friends, based on the recommendations of YouTubers or the topics they talk about. Even the well-known names of traditional publishing find themselves obliged  to  adapt  to  this  new  publishing  concept.  In this context; The still uncertain reasons for the young generation to transform into an audience that serves the YouTuber phenomenon rather than the traditional media is the main factor in the realization of this research. For this reason, within the scope of the research, 6 different categories  were  examined  by  focusing  on  YouTuber-audience interaction. These categories are respectively divided  into  Comedy/Entertainment,  Information/Documentary, Technology, Makeup, Talk Show/Interview and  Gamers.  In  the  selected  datasets,  the  broadcast criteria that YouTube viewers searched the most were determined, and the conversion and popularity rates in new viewing practices over 30 different Youtubers were examined.

Extended Abstract: Social life, which has jumped within the digital age with Internet technologies, is experiencing a brand-new brink within the digitalized world with the Covid-19 epidemic. The corona virus, which started in Wuhan province of China end of 2019 and so caused a world quarantine process by affecting the entire world, makes it necessary to digitize real lifestyle. With this digitalization, social interaction in world has been minimized, while the quantity of social interaction within the digital environment has reached its maximum. the rise within the intensity of interaction within the digital environment, thus transforming the pandemic into a digital pandemic. the belief of ordinary standard of living digitally and therefore the indisputable fact that there is a world epidemic crisis undermines the credibility of the knowledge pool formed while setting the agenda within the digital environment. this era, called new normal, also had an excellent impact on Turkey. during this study, the results caused by the corona virus outbreak from the society in Turkey, the Turkish community of Google search and Instagram with the hashtag was examined by analysis out of interest within the agenda. This review has been disbursed by specializing in certain criteria generally the problems that the Turkish people are inquisitive about and speak about most during the Covid-19 and therefore the quarantine process that comes with it.

We invite you all to participate in the next issues of JMC by submitting articles related to any communication, media, information studies. JMC is NO longer a thematic journal, JMC will have 2 regular issues in a year as December and June issues. This is our special issue for the new year. Also we kindly invite you all to cooperate in special issues. In this sense, our aim is to implement improvements during the transformation of media/communication or while investigating within the field of communication. In the case of communication and media studies in particular, we would rather include those carried out in a subject, in a group of subjects or in a whole degree from the scientific and technological area.

Through JMC we would like to create an open access scientific journal to exchange and disseminate any contribution that may involve communication and media studies so as to achieve a more significant research for our colleagues at scientific and technological universities. Hence, our readers could use such proposals as a model to be applied and/or adopted in their own contexts. In fact, we have a special interest in receiving articles related to experiences that imply a methodological change (when compared with a more traditional approach) and encourage or motivate developing new theoritical and practical theories.

We include here examples of some possible topics for the forthcoming JMC issue (but not limited to):
• Children, Adolescents and the Media
• Communication and Technology
• Communication History
• Communication Law and Policy
• Communication Science and Biology

Interrogating the role of knowledge, methods and practices of communication and media in the formation, reproduction, and reflection of neoliberal modes, this issue will look at the ways in which intervening in bodies of communication and media knowledge offer pathways for structural transformation. By the order of neoliberalism since the 1980s, many media and communication scholars have redirected their criticisms from capitalism to neoliberalism. Therefore; mapping the legacies and meanings of the terms liberalism and neoliberalism and revealing the complexity and specifity of what neoliberalism is today, indicate the necessity of prospecting.

The term neoliberalism has been taken up keenly in critical analyses in recent years. Criticisms of neoliberalism can be separated roughly into three directions. In the first, the Foucauldians who draw on Foucault’s comments on neoliberalism. The second direction of Marxists draws on Marxist political economy to frame neoliberalism as the dominant capitalism ideology of the present. A third one, which might be called the epochalists, uses neoliberalism as one of a set of epochal concepts to describe recent developments in conceptual terms.

The neoliberal discourse is characterized by shielding the responsibility of society over the individual destinies and transferring this burden to each one. Transferring that individuality transformed by media, communication and thus information.

Journal of Media Critiques is expected critical papers from different perspectives, as indicated above neoliberalism context based on the media, communication and information theme. Thanks to all our participants/authors, referees to make this happen. Here the issue!

NEO-LIBERALISM AND MEDIA

Journal of Media Critiques is expecting critical papers from different perspectives, as indicated above neoliberalism context based on the media, communication and information theme. Possible topics include but are not limited to:

Hegemony of Pluralism in Media and Cultural Studies
Determinism or Functionalism in Media and Technology
Marginalization of Media and Communication Studies
    Neoliberalism and Media, Communication Studies
Neoliberalism as a Replacement of Capitalism

    Conservative Media and Conservative Governments
    The Transformation of Ideology

No field in science and medicine today remains untouched by Big Data, and psychiatry is no exception. Proteomics is a Big Data technology and a next generation biomarker, supporting novel system diagnostics and therapeutics in psychiatry. Proteomics technology is, in fact, much older than genomics and dates to the 1970s, well before the launch of the international Human Genome Project. While the genome has long been framed as the master or "elite" executive molecule in cell biology, the proteome by contrast is humble. Yet the proteome is critical for life-it ensures the daily functioning of cells and whole organisms. In short, proteins are the blue-collar workers of biology, the down-to-earth molecules that we cannot live without. Since 2010, proteomics has found renewed meaning and international attention with the launch of the Human Proteome Project and the growing interest in Big Data technologies such as proteomics. This article presents an interdisciplinary technology foresight analysis and conceptualizes the terms "environtome" and "social proteome". We define "environtome" as the entire complement of elements external to the human host, from microbiome, ambient temperature and weather conditions to government innovation policies, stock market dynamics, human values, political power and social norms that collectively shape the human host spatially and temporally. The "social proteome" is the subset of the environtome that influences the transition of proteomics technology to innovative applications in society. The social proteome encompasses, for example, new reimbursement schemes and business innovation models for proteomics diagnostics that depart from the "once-a-life-time" genotypic tests and the anticipated hype attendant to context and time sensitive proteomics tests. Building on the "nesting principle" for governance of complex systems as discussed by Elinor Ostrom, we propose here a 3-tiered organizational architecture for Big Data science such as proteomics. The proposed nested governance structure is comprised of (a) scientists, (b) ethicists, and (c) scholars in the nascent field of "ethics-of-ethics", and aims to cultivate a robust social proteome for personalized medicine. Ostrom often noted that such nested governance designs offer assurance that political power embedded in innovation processes is distributed evenly and is not concentrated disproportionately in a single overbearing stakeholder or person. We agree with this assessment and conclude by underscoring the synergistic value of social and biological proteomes to realize the full potentials of proteomics science for personalized medicine in psychiatry in the present era of Big Data.

CALL FOR PAPERS

SEPTEMBER 2016, Vol.2. No.7

NEO-LIBERALISM AND MEDIA

Journal of Media Critiques is expecting critical papers from different perspectives, as indicated above neoliberalism context based on the media, communication and information theme. Possible topics include but are not limited to:

Hegemony of Pluralism in Media and Cultural Studies
Determinism or Functionalism in Media and Technology
Marginalization of Media and Communication Studies
    Neoliberalism and Media, Communication Studies
Neoliberalism as a Replacement of Capitalism
Media and Cultural Industries as Neoliberal Markets
    Commercialization of Culture in Media
    Democratic Populism in Media
    Globalized Media vs. Localized Culture
    Conservative Media and Conservative Governments
    The Transformation of Ideology
NeoLiberalism and Internet of Things (IoT)
Big Data Issue in a NeoLiberal Space

Security has always been a substantial problem for humankind throughout the history and at the same time it has also been a basic need. Defense and attack strategies have formed security policies which are underlying the war. The term of war has evolved over the ages and finally the concept of asymmetric warfare has emerged. Furthermore, developing communication utilities and spreading information technologies bring the information warfare to the agenda. In parallel with the development of defense strategies and as a result of human curiosity for the protected things, new attack strategies have been developed. Similarly, for the purposes of defense throughout history, encryption algorithms has been used for all communication channels. DNA algorithm and human reproduction logic as an encryption algorithm has been suggested for today’s fastest communication channels, the networks and the internet. Based on the simplest model of Communication, Shannon- Weaver Communication Model, the human reproduction logic designed as an algorithm for information systems.

The level of technology that human being has been able to achieve so far is continuing to speed up also in the field of education. Advanced technology has given a distinctive dimension as well as a new perception to the concept of traditional education existed until now. This new conception caused governments to develop different methods in order to provide educational, cultural and social improvement of the individual and to create human potential required for a knowledge-based community. As a product of technology, the internet and the internet-based distant education, carried out by the internet have been started to apply to the education system of Turkey and the rest of the world as well, in different ways and by using different models. While reaching a wide mass of students, the internet-based education, at the same time, provides the possibility of addressing a wide mass both in the national and international level. This system of education will improve the collective problem-solving skills of people from different languages, religions and races; as well as, their ability of having a thought in all subjects and of free thinking.

In a digital society, shall we be the authors of our own experience, not only during our lifetime but also after we die? We ask this question because dying and bereavement have become even harder, and much less private, in the digital age. New big data-driven digital industries and technologies are on the rise, with promises of interactive 3D avatars and storage of digital memories of the deceased, so they can continue to exist online as the "living dead" in a digital afterlife. Famous rock and roll icons like Roy Orbison, Frank Zappa, Ronnie James Dio, and Amy Winehouse have famously been turned into holograms that can once again give "live" performances on the touring circuit, often pulling in large audiences. In 1997, Carla Sofka introduced the term thanatechnology as "technological mechanisms such as interactive videodiscs and computer programs that are used to access information or aid in learning about thanatology topics." Onward to 2021, the advent of social media, the Internet of Things, and sensors that digitize and archive nearly every human movement and experience are taking thanatechnology, and by extension, digital transformation, to new heights. For example, what happens to digital remains of persons once they cease to exist physically? This article offers a critical study and snapshot of this nascent field, and the "un-disciplinary" sociotechnical issues digital thanatechnologies raise in relation to big data. We also discuss how best to critically govern this new frontier in systems science and the digital society. We suggest that new policy narratives such as (1) the right to nonparticipation in relation to information and communication technologies and (2) the planetary public goods deserve further attention to democratize thanatechnology and big data. To the extent that systems science often depends on data from online platforms, for example, in times of pandemics and ecological crises, "critical thanatechnology studies," introduced in this article, is a timely and essential field of scholarship with broad importance for systems science and planetary health.
