Among the three international fashion hubs Paris, Milan, and New York that have dominated fashion production since the 20th century, Italian fashion stands out through its transcultural Italophony. Since the historic beginnings of the West, the development of fashion, taste and etiquette in modern Italy plays both culturally and historically a key role in European politics, economics, literature, fine arts, music and theatre. This applies also to Italian design, which is – like fashion – a powerful nonverbal language in cultural, aesthetical and economic terms, expressing a unique and life-affirming sociological habitus. This essay intends to pinpoint the outstanding impact of taste, fashion and design originating from Italy and perceivable all over the world on a transcultural and transdisciplinary level. Starting with antiquity and Renaissance, both disciplines enter a period of prosperity and success during the golden 1950s and 1960s, supported by the rise of Cinecittà, family bu...

This article intends to contextualize methodologically the concept of transnationalism with that of transculturality while focusing on Italophone literature. Going back to the transcultural theorem as introduced in 1940 by the Cuban sociologist Fernando Ortiz (transculturación), at the turn of the millennium the term has been seized, adapted and revisited in German and English language by the German philosopher Wolfgang Welsch (transculturality). After the final proclamation of a Transcultural Turn, the notion of a "Transcultural Italophone Literature" is applied, used and disseminated also in Modern Italian Studies, opening up new possibilities to revisit Italy's literary canon. Starting from these theoretical premises, a historic overview enables us to recode the literary evolution of the Italophone sphere, analyzing it through a transcultural lens: to begin with the Sicilian School in chapter 2, through to postmodern times in chapter 3, featuring the upraising Italo...

For decades the Italian singer and songwriter Etta Scollo, born in Catania in 1958, has been living in Germany after moving from Sicily to Turin, then to Vienna and touring for an intense period through the US and Europe – always coming back, though, to her home island in terms of creating music as well as of performing in public on site. In her musical work, the absence of a place is paradoxically intermingled with a strong attachment to it, as her compositions oscillate between classical music, jazz, and avant-garde pop. While telling personal stories and composing a transmedia-related mix of stylistic devices and poetic elements, Scollo’s work displays an extraordinary openness with regard to other genres and cultures. By recalling the migratory past of the Sicilian island and Catania –birthplace of the romantic composer and father of the bel canto Vincenzo Bellini (1801-1835), of Sicilian folk songs (including the cunti, the tarantella, etc.) and the traditional use of special ...

This paper deals with literature as therapy within the context of the new migrant literary scene in Italy and the legacy of Giuseppe Bonaviri (1924-2009), a doctor, health officer and cardiologist who was also a prolific poet and author of novels. After examining Italy’s hybrid origins and the trauma of migration from a literary point of view, I will give a brief overview of italophone migrant literature and common pathologies of migration in artistic terms. Using his professional skills as a physician in literature, the Sicilian writer Bonaviri identified himself as a migrant in order to better diagnose this character on the one hand, while on the other he tried to identify cultural and literary therapies for the illnesses of migration and, thus, of an individual –i.e. psychological– as well as social –i.e. collective– tedium of life. Bonaviri’s transcultural humanitas, the importance of cultural roots and his suggestion of autobiographical writing as therapy will be read in contra...

What distinguishes transculturality and how can it be analysed as an academic discourse? Starting with Wolfgang Welsch's definition of "transculturality", this article first reproduces the historical evolution of the term from Fernando Ortiz to post- and transmodernism. This application-oriented reflection on characteristics of transculturality clarifies how Transcultural Studies have developed from a critical consideration of multi- and especially intercultural processes, and which position they have taken in current theoretical debates. Their didactic relevance is demonstrated in the example of Romance Language Studies which, by definition, are a transcultural model par excellence. As shown by the case-study of Franco-Romance Studies in German-speaking areas, it appears to be overdue, in terms of curriculum, to have an extensive critical look at the world-wide transcultural project of international Francophony as well as at the paradigm of hybrid exchange processes b...
