Intorno alla metà del Quattrocento la stampa a caratteri mobili fa la sua comparsa in Europa e avvia un processo rivoluzionario nella produzione e diffusione della conoscenza. A Perugia, nel cuore dell'Italia culla del Rinascimento, il primo torchio a stampa arriva nel 1471. Sono gli anni in cui la città ha nel "magnifico" Braccio Baglioni il suo più importante interprete politico e nell'Università, da oltre un secolo, il cuore di un'intensa vita cultura-le aperta alla comunità internazionale. I collegi, in particolare la Sapienza Vecchia, ospitano gruppi di studenti ultramontani che favoriscono il lavoro delle officine tipografiche. Attivi per un quindicennio, gli stampatori venuti d'Oltralpe sono messi in ombra dalla concorrenza ma alla fine del '400 si avvia una seconda stagione, dominata dalla famiglia Cartolari e da Bianchino dal Leone. Questa parabola, che già attrasse l'attenzione dei primi bibliografi, viene ricostruita attraverso la rilettura della ricca documentazione d'archivio e la disamina delle edizioni, da cui emerge la qualità di una produzione tutt'altro che minore, cui contribuirono alcuni grandi interpreti del lavoro tipografico.

Edition and translation into Italian of the foundation documents of the University of Perugia: three bulls from two popes (Clement V in 1308 and John XXII in 1318 and 1321) and two diplomas from the Emperor Charles IV (1355). The historical context is explored in the introduction and a final section is on the archival history of the documents. An essay on the chancery of the pope and on the imperial one by Attilio Bartoli Langeli follows the edition of the documents (pp. 109-143).

Towards a corpus of texts of the ius commune from manuscript to print”, so reads the complement of the title of IVS Commune online, the digital system which forms the object of the present article. Such title serves to clarify the purpose of the system: the reconstruction of a corpus of texts notoriously very rich and complex, and very difficult to tackle. The first paragraph is meant to illustrate the terms of such corpus,which is kept wide. Once defined the object of the research and the context in whichit was conceived, the article develops by illustrating the digital tool, the underpinning rationale, and main features; special attention is dedicated to aspects of interoperability, data reuse, and, finally, cooperation. Particularly important is considered the cooperation between editors who work in different contexts (academia and holding institutions). A final paragraph serves to illustrate the most recent developments of the tool and to present future perspectives, for the near future and in the long-term.

In 1507 a contract was signed affirming the foundation of a company composed of Battista and Silvestro Torti , Lucantonio Giunta, Giorgio Arrivabene, Amedeo Scoto, and Antonio Moretto to publish legal texts. The contract, is well known to book historians but was still awaiting a thorough analysis. This article provides the edition of the text (and its translation into English) and a comment focusing on the core of the agreement (and some of the many elements worth noting). The core of the contract consisted in a very ambitious programme: they agreed on printing the works of almost all the most relevant jurists, a consistent catalogue to address a specific target of customers. Both the list of authors and the very idea of the joint-venture (between the Torti, well established in the field of legal editions, and Giunta, one of the greatest publishers of his time, and the others) resulted from the refined professionality reached by early modern printers and reflected in the sentence 'per mazor utilitade nostra e reputatione del mestier' which is eventually found in the text of the contract.

Il saggio illustra, nella prima parte, il grado di autorevolezza acquisito, nel corso di una vita assai breve, dal giurista Bartolo da Sassoferrato (Sassoferrato 1313/14 – Perugia 1357/58) con attenzione particolare alla penisola iberica, dove a Bartolo nel Quattrocento fu riconosciuto per legge lo status di figura dirimente nei casi di dubbio. L’ampliamento dei confini al di là dell’Oceano portò con sé la disposizione di legge, che ad esempio fu esplicitamente confermata in Brasile agli inizi del XVII secolo. Attestata così la fortuna del giurista oltreoceano, la seconda parte del saggio spiega come ricostruirla, nell’ampiezza e nella durata, illustrando nelle linee generali le fonti e il metodo d’indagine. Quanto alle prime, due gruppi di fonti sono individuate, rispettivamente, nelle liste dei testi di studio proposti per gli studenti di legge nel periodo considerato e negli elenchi dei libri esportati dalla Spagna alle Americhe, due ambiti rispetto ai quali molto è già emerso in recenti progetti di ricerca.  Parallelamente, la ricerca dovrebbe spostarsi sull’indagine sistematica di inventari e cataloghi storici, per approdare infine nelle raccolte ancora esistenti, per esaminare gli esemplari sopravvissuti. Una ricerca ricca e complessa che però può avvalersi di strumenti digitali già esistenti, che potrebbero facilmente essere applicati  al caso di studio agevolando altresì l’avvio di una collaborazione intercontinentale.

A medieval jurist in the New World. Towards a study of the influence of Bartolus de Saxoferrato beyond the Ocean. The article first focuses on the grade of authority acquired by the jurist Bartolus de Saxoferrato (Sassoferrato 1313/14 – Perugia 1357/58) during his brief life, with a special attention to the Iberian Peninsula, since his status as main reference in case of doubt was legally recognized during the 15th century. Such recognition was confirmed and exported in the colonies, for instance in the Brazil’s legislation at the beginning of the 17th century. How long the jurist did retain his authority can be reconstructed through various sources, such as textbooks for law students or lists of books shipped from Spain to the Americas, both investigated in recent projects. And besides, as a result of the evidences in the current collections, the inventories of historical libraries can inform us about the world presence of Bartolus’ works. Digital tools already existing can help in reconstructing historical libraries and could be applied to this case at hand  within an intercontinental collaboration framework.

During a short life, spent in towns of central Italy, especially Perugia, Bartolus de Saxoferrato produced a personal exegesis of the legal texts which resulted in works of great clarity and effectiveness and which gained him soon a great success. Hundreds of manuscripts are found everywhere in Europe along with thousands of copies of printed editions, which testify his influence, lasting long after his death. This implied a number of doubtful or false attributions, on which scholars keep debating; a systematic study of Bartolus’ works, started in occasion of the celebrations of the centenary of his death (1957), is still to be completed. The job has been recently re-started within a dedicated project, stimulated also by the centenary of the birth (2013). The recent initiative is looking at the matter by a different perspective: a complete census is pursued, which adds to the manuscripts also all printed editions in order to a complete reconstruction of the  bibliographic landscape, which testifies of the fame of the jurist.

Una sezione introduttiva ripercorre, a grandi linee, la peculiarità della trasmissione del testo in ambito giuridico, per evidenziare il valore e il significato di marginalia come le glosse e riassumerne l’evoluzione e quindi l’impatto sulle forme stesse della pagina e del libro. Il cuore del contributo è dedicato allo studio di tali peculiarità da una prospettiva storico-bibliografica che ovviamente tiene conto della tradizione storico-giuridica e in parte si radica proprio in essa. Nel metodo proposto entra lo sviluppo di uno strumento digitale (IVS Commune online) di cui si illustrano le principali funzionalità. Accanto alle info¬mazioni si propongono considerazioni di carattere metodologico e, in forma lieve e suggerita, di politica culturale.

The first part of the article serves as an introduction to the main features of legal texts and their transmission; particular attention, given the context, is given to marginalia which are peculiar to legal texts, such as the glosses. The introduction also provides a summary of how the evolving of the texts over the time had a great impact on the very making of the book, starting from the page. Then, the core of the arti¬cle follows which is dedicated to the study of the transmission of legal texts from the perspective of the bibliographer and histori¬an of the book also to underlie that he/she will have to take into consideration studies published by legal historians. The method under proposal includes the de¬velopment of a digital platform (IVS Commune online) of which the main features are provided. In doing this, the author of this article offers some observations on methodology as well as some thoughts on matters of cultural politics.

Versione rivista, aggiornata e integrata di un saggio edito dieci anni prima e in altra sede e dedicato alla vicenda della stampa della princeps degli statuti perugini, dove l'analisi bibliologica svela gli stretti legami con le calde questioni politiche di una città dello Stato della Chiesa coinvolta, a suo modo, nelle guerre d'Italia. Il saggio viene proposto non solo aggiornato e rivisto ma nella sede ideale, trattandosi di una raccolta di contributi tutti dedicati alla produzione statutaria.

Around 1830 Charles Albert of Savoy started the foundation of a new library, since the collections once belonging to the dukes of Savoy (the celebrated Grande Galleria of Charles Emmanuel I) had been given to the public, mainly the local University. The choices made by Charles Albert in starting new collections are the focus of the paper, along with an overall presentation of archival sources which inform on the subject. A comparison with the foundation of the Royal Library in the United Kingdom by George III along with collecting behaviour is also tackled in this paper.

In 2020, between June and September, the first cycle of seminars titled "Culture del libro e del documento" took place in the Department of Historical Studies of the University of Turin, focused on the study of books and documents and their teaching at a university level (Archival studies, Bibliography, Library and Information Science, Medieval Historiography, Digital Humanities). Four meetings were organised of which this article offers a critical report (in Italian).

Books, documents, any other objects forming the cultural heritage serve as the collective memory of our society, which in turn is preserved, stored, organized, and made available in archives, libraries, museums. To run those institutions, one needs to possess skills and refined competencies, as well as creativity and the ability to understand and interpret the innovation. Providing this kind of expertise is the object of the postgraduate course titled "Library, Archive and Cultural Heritage Studies", launched in September 2020 in the Department of Historical Studies of the University of Turin (https://librodocumentopatrimonio.campusnet.unito.it/do/home.pl). The disciplines traditionally associated with the archival and library studies are presented here within an interdisciplinary context where juridical, managerial and communication sciences play an important part. Based on this hard core, students are offered three learning profiles, respectively dedicated to Archival science, Library and Information Science and a more transversal pathway focusing on the management of the cultural heritage in relation to the various places, landscape, and the cultural institutions.

Ricostruzione critica e commento della biblioteca di Francesco Maturanzio che, già celebre tra i contemporanei per la ricchezza e l'importanza dei testi conservati, è stata recentemente rivelata dalla scoperta dell'inventario stilato in fase di consegna della raccolta all'abbazia di San Pietro cui l'umanista l'aveva destinata. Oltre 300 item descrivono una raccolta bilingue, splendida rappresentazione della cultura umanistica in cui, oltre alla ragguardevole componente manoscritta, si trovano esemplari delle più aggiornate e importanti edizioni a stampa. The editions of legal texts are a major and important part of 15th-century book output, amounting to about 15% of the surviving extant editions. The category comprehends two types of work: (a) the collections of Roman and Canon law, with their medieval supplements and commentaries; (b) acts and regulations produced by governments and by local authorities as part of their day-to-day activity. After a general overview, this article focuses on the first group of texts, which offers an opportunity to address some key questions related to the impact of printing in a particular cultural context, that of the university. A study of legal texts printed in the 15th century aims to provide a relevant contribution to a better understanding of the impact of printing by comparing elements of continuity and discontinuity with the manuscript and later printed tradition.

This essay aims to explore the success of Frezzi’s work at the time of its earliest seven editions (issued between 1481 and 1511) by looking at the interest manifested by both the printers/publishers and by the audience. An in-depth analysis of all editions has been carried out, with special care for the princeps (to reconstruct the context within which it was realised by Arndes, also responsible for the Libro delle Sorti by Lorenzo Spirito) and the 1508 edition, whose apparatus of illustrations is analysed to better evaluate the importance of the initiative undertaken by Pacini. The success among the audience is explored through an examination of a representative sample of copies (all known copies of the princeps have been examined) and the analysis of the catalogues of a number of historical libraries, to conclude that Frezzi’s work was not just read by a small group of scholars; instead it reached a fairly wide audience formed of individuals of various background.

Analysis of the early printed editions of Bartolus' treatises. The article highlights the importance of a first appearance as a collection (printed in Venice by Vindelinus in 1472) of some of the most relevant ones. Comments are made about those treatises which were printed as autonomous texts and inferences are made in relation to the country of printing for those of doubtful attributions.

This paper aims to show how a family of stationers, who had long supplied parchment, paper and possibly manuscript books to the academic and professional market in Perugia, reinvented itself by starting a business to address all areas of the new print world. The focus is on the role played by Francesco Cartolari and the strategies he adopted in leading a transformation which ended up with the reintroduction of printing activity in Perugia and the foundation of a publishing house
[special edition issued in 20 copies in September 2018; the definitive version was printed in December s.a.].
This essay is based on material collected for my PhD in History (2012) but it was written during my Postdoc at Oxford, as team member of the 15cBOOKTRADE Project funded by the European Research Council (ERC 2014-2019).

Prospero Podiani (1535 ca.-1615) is well known as one of the major book-collectors in the 16th century Italy. He was keen to gather the best editions of the most important works published until his own day (along with relevant manuscripts) and to make them available to scholars. In 1582 he agreed with Perugia city governors about the donation of his collection and the foundation of the Biblioteca Augusta. Podiani was able to keep pace with the production of all the major European publishers mainly by acquiring sale catalogues. The evidence for this can be found in the great number of copies of those catalogues (some of which are very rare) that exist today in the Biblioteca Augusta. Along with acquiring printed catalogues, he also produced a series of manuscript lists of books for sale. This article aims to provide an overall presentation of those documents, printed and manuscript, and then to present the results of a more detailed analysis of one of those catalogues where Podiani listed almost exclusively law books printed in the course of the 16th century and to put them in relation to the section of the library dedicated to legal texts.

Biblioteche e archivi sono sempre più consapevoli che l'archiviazione del web è una componente essenziale della loro missione. Mentre il numero di documenti (tra questi anche fonti primarie) disponibili sul web è in crescita esponenziale, molta di questa documentazione è già persa per sempre. La conservazione digitale non è solo un problema tecnologico, ma anche il risultato della collaborazione tra i produttori, gli utenti e le istituzioni della memoria. " Conservare il digitale " è il messaggio del Workshop sul documento elettronico che l'Anai organizza a Torino dal 2010, che nella sua 6. edizione è stato dedicato al tema della conservazione del web, inteso nella sua interezza e complessità come un patrimonio informativo da selezionare e preservare per il futuro. Al centro della giornata l'esperienza delle biblioteche nazionali di Francia e Regno Unito, che da anni portano avanti un'attività di web archiving, interpretata come conseguenza naturale del loro mandato: conservare la memoria identitaria del Paese. Due casi di studio che permettono di confrontare approcci e soluzioni differenti a partire da istanze comuni, e che nel loro insieme rappresentano un modello autorevole cui guardare da parte dei Paesi (tra cui l'Italia) che non hanno ancora messo in pratica un'archiviazione istituzionale del web. Il panorama odierno offre un crescente sviluppo di strumenti e servizi di web archiving, accessibile ad un numero sempre maggiore di utenti, e le istituzioni della memoria possono contare su un'infrastruttura di base. In Italia, ai sensi del D.P.R. 252/2006, è stata attuata una sperimentazione del deposito legale delle pubblicazioni digitali, cui si auspica segua in tempi brevi la realizzazione del regolamento specifico previsto dalla legge.

A collection of about 500 copies of prohibited books was found in the library that Prospero Podiani had founded in Perugia in the second half of the 16th century. How was he able to preserve such a collection in a town that was part of the Papal State? After acquiring a wide license (that Gigliola Fragnito discovered and commented) that enabled him to keep prohibited books, starting with Gesner's works, Podiani kept buying books by several prohibited authors (including Luther and Calvin). This essays aims to highlight the relationships he had with high rank individuals from the clergy with whom Podiani seems to have elaborated a project of creating a special library where to gather all works by prohibited authors (officially with the aim to better know them and better fight their theories).

The virtual reconstruction of the important collection of incunabula (279  copies) now retrievable in MEI (Material Evidence in Incunabula). The identification of the books from the inventory with the copies currently in the library (app. 210 books out of a collection of app. 1200 incunabula) and several copies dispersed (ca. 60).

Two classification systems created to arrange Podiani's library (16th-17th century): a theory on how to organize the ideal library (Prospero Podiani) and a system based on a division of the reality into four elements and actually applied to the collections (Fulvio Mariottelli).

How to read and interpret a library inventory. Data from MS 3082, the Inventory of the Biblioteca Augusta written by Fulvio Mariottelli in 1617: graphs on authors (categorized in ancient, mediaeval and contemporary authors), places and dates of printing, subject classification of the about 10,000 volumes that formed the earliest collection.

The great success of Bartolus’ work, reflected in a vast manuscript production, was later confirmed by the early production in print: in the 15th century were published
approximately two hundred editions of his texts. This article is the first result of a research conceived within the ERC project 15cBOOKTRADE; this research aims to reconstruct in detail the corpus of Bartolus’ works printed in the15th century as a contribution to a better understanding of the transition from the manuscript production to the collections of texts published in the 16th century.The first step of this research provides a general view, by setting out the group of the editiones principes and the collections of texts they  contain according to the arrangement of the early printers.

About 1500 rare books are preserved nowadays in the Library of the University of Perugia (Fondo Antico) that were once part of the splendid Franciscan Library of Monteripido (while another section ended up in the city library). The rationale of the choice of the books given to the University is revealed through an exam of this collection.

Description and analysis of the old Library of the University, founded around 1810 and placed in the beautiful site that had just been realized by the monks of Montemorcino Nuovo. More than 10.000 volumes are still in the old shelves and around 6.000 are stocked in the Central Library (founded in the 1950s). The development of the University management and teaching practice along the 19th and 20th century is still visible through the collections and the story of their former owners.

Come far dialogare due database online che indagano su terreni contigui. Il database "IVS Commune online", mirando a studiare la trasmissione dei testi giuridici sul lungo periodo, tende anche a ricostruire l'insieme delle opere dei maestri giuristi. In linguaggio contemporaneo ne ricostruisce la produzione scientifica. L'estrazione su richiesta dei relativi titoli va a popolare una nuova sezione del database perugino Onomasticon, quella appunto dedicata alle opere dei maestri.

A feature of early printed editions is that texts of different works are often found together, as they were in manuscripts. In addition, printed editions frequently came with other texts by editors, translators, by the printers themselves, which provide us with an amount of information on the context surrounding publication. In TEXT-inc each one of these texts is described as a unit and each person involved in the publication is identified and indexed. This allows us a better understanding of the textual transmission by enabling us to compare texts in early printed editions with manuscripts as well as later editions. A case study based on the analysis of an edition of a long list of legal texts will be presented.

Il titolo dell’intervento è parzialmente esemplato su quello di un progetto di ricerca (avviato a settembre 2019)  di cui al convegno si vorrebbero presentare le principali linee di indagine e gli obiettivi, soffermandosi in particolare sulle questioni di metodo e sulle logiche sottese all’allestimento di una piattaforma digitale dedicata ai testi, la cui progettazione e realizzazione costituiscono il cuore del lavoro.
Dal punto di vista della domanda storiografica, obiettivo del progetto sul lungo periodo è ricostruire il panorama generale dei testi del diritto comune (diritto romano e canonico e le opere dei principali commentatori) prodotti tra il 1350, quando le aggiunte ai nuclei principali erano state completate e una nuova fase nello studio delle leggi veniva avviata (la Scuola dei Commentatori) e il 1650, quando anche l’approccio umanistico aveva compiuto la sua parabola. Questi gli aspetti che si intendono indagare:
• L’impatto della stampa: continuità e discontinuità nella produzione del libro; una ricerca dedicata alle edizioni incunabole dei testi giuridici (svolta nell’ambito del progetto ERC 15cBOOKTRADE, di cui sono appena stati pubblicati i risultati: http://doi.org/10.30687/978-88-6969-332-8/004), ha mostrato chiaramente l’importanza delle prime edizioni senza le quali le successive grandi operazioni editoriali non sarebbero state possibili;
• Il milieu degli intellettuali e l’ambiente culturale in cui i testi furono concepiti e redatti;
• Gli sviluppi della produzione editoriale nel corso del XVI secolo;
• Le manifestazioni dell’Umanesimo giuridico.
Come anticipato, al centro della ricerca c’è la progettazione di una piattaforma digitale (IVS Commune online) finalizzata a uno studio comparato dei testi pubblicati sia in manoscritti che in edizioni a stampa, che renda possibile seguirne l’evoluzione sul lungo periodo, tre secoli durante i quali si produssero eventi di portata tale da stravolgere il panorama politico d’Europa e il volto della società occidentale. Quanto alla implementazione dei contenuti, per il triennio 2019-2022 l’obiettivo è nutrire la base dati con descrizioni di due gruppi di testi: il Corpus iuris civilis e le opere di Bartolo da Sassoferrato, per i quali si mira a realizzare l’immissione dei dati principali e la descrizione analitica dei testimoni più importanti (manoscritti peciati; autografi; editiones principes; edizioni critiche). 
Per Bartolo, e in considerazione del peso della figura e dell’opera, si è pensato di individuare un ‘progetto nel progetto’, per riprendere e completare l’importante operazione iniziata nei primi anni ’70 da Emanuele Casamassima: l’Iter Italicum [dei] Codices operum Bartoli a Saxoferrato recensiti, collana diretta da Bruno Paradisi e di cui uscirono nel 1971 l’Iter Germanicum, dello stesso Casamassima, e nel 1973 l’Iter Hispanicum di Antonio García y García. L’operazione inizierà dove è stata lasciata da Casamassima essendosi individuato l’archivio cartaceo da lui lasciato e quindi in continuità scientifica, ma naturalmente potendosi avvalere delle tante risorse oggi esistenti, in particolare Manuscripta juridica, la grande base dati creata e curata da Gero Dolezalek, consultabile nel sito del Max Planck Institute di Francoforte: http://manuscripts.rg.mpg.de/. Gero Dolezalek, sanno bene gli specialisti (tanto del manoscritto quanto del libro giuridico) ha realizzato un’impresa pionieristica; è stato contattato per saggiarne la disponibilità a partecipare a un nuovo progetto sul manoscritto giuridico, proponendogli di costruire un legame diretto tra Manuscripta juridica e la nuova base dati. Le modalità di partecipazione sono ancora da definire, ma la sua disponibilità è stata raccolta (in un incontro svoltosi a Padova il 4 marzo 2020).
Da ultimo, si desidera sottolineare come, accanto alle questioni storiografiche e a quelle proprie della bibliografia, il progetto, come ogni iniziativa che si inscriva nel panorama delle digital humanities, solleva questioni relative a interoperabilità, cooperazione e collaborazione, tutti aspetti ai quali si intende prestare particolare attenzione nell’ottica della massima apertura possibile al ‘dialogo’ con iniziative scientifiche che muovono su terreni vicini, tra i quali piace citare, primo tra tutti, il progetto Onomasticon dell’Università di Perugia.

The British Library preserves one of the world’s largest collections of what are known as ‘incunabula’ – the first books printed in Europe. Each copy of those books has its own fascinating history, which can be reconstructed by a combination of different research techniques to expose the massive social and cultural impact of the invention of modern printing in the 15th century. Current research (namely the 15cBOOKTRADE project, led at the University of Oxford in collaboration with the British Library) is generating fresh insights into the meaning and value of incunabula in 15th-century society, adding to our understanding of the printing revolution.

Seminario internazionale organizzato in collaborazione tra Fondazione 1563 per l'arte e la cultura e Dipartimento di Studi storici dell'Università di Torino, per affrontare il tema delle biblioteche storiche di ricerca, le potenzialità, la valorizzazione.

Convegno internazionale sui temi delle trasformazioni del libro di diritto nel lungo periodo che include la comparsa della stampa e insieme trasformazioni socio culturali epocali. Ne trattano alcuni dei più autorevoli esperti in dialogo tra loro e con studiosi impegnati ora in nuove ricerche. Si discute delle principali figure e scuole giuridiche medievali, il cui impatto è ben evidente nella produzione libraria che ancora si conserva; di libri manoscritti e a stampa, con una sessione dedicata a decorazione e miniatura; delle biblioteche di giuristi (o dello 'scaffale giuridico' nelle biblioteche di non giuristi); di progetti in corso, di nuovi metodi e strumenti di indagine, del dialogo interdisciplinare. 
Il convegno si tiene a Torino, nella bella sede della Corte d'Appello, presso la Biblioteca storica che verrà anche illustrata per l'occasione, ma si può seguire anche a distanza attraverso il link indicato in locandina.

Presentation of a new publication (eds Franca Varallo and Maurizio Vivarelli) dedicated to the Grande Galleria of Carlo Emanuele I of Savoy, the very ambitious project of a Wunderkammer realised by the duke of Savoy, following his father's project of a Theatrum omnium scientiarum. The book is a collection of fifteen studies (four of which already published, including two important essays by Sergio Mamino) which have been brought together to form a rich volume. The book illustrates the main features of both the dukes' projects, their importance in relation with similar initiatives taken in the same period of time, the ongoing projects aiming to put more light onto the collections, reconstructed on the basis of documentary evidence as well as the study of the collections still preserved in Turin..

RECENSIONI E SEGNALAZIONI 256 vogliono approcciare al tema, fornendo uno strumento complesso ma denso di interessi. Allo stesso tempo anche gli esperti e gli studiosi del libro hanno nel testo dell'autore una risorsa importante che 'rinfresca' un tema 'antico'. Maria Gioia Tavoni Maria Alessandra Panzanelli Fratoni, Edizioni del XV secolo nella collezione Tiezzi Mazzoni della Stella Maestri, introduzione di Giancarlo Petrella, Tor-rita di Siena, Associazione culturale «Villa classica»-Società bibliografica toscana, 2018, 183 pp. Habent sua fata libelli: così scriveva il grammatico latino Terenziano Mauro nel III secolo d.C. Non sempre, come ci si aspetterebbe e come dimostrano i molti esemplari intonsi prodotti anche in epoche lontane dalla nostra, il destino di un libro è quello di essere letto. Quando non raggiunti, nel peggiore dei casi, dalle fiamme perché accusati di diffondere pensieri contrari alle autorità civili e religiose, i libri finiscono sugli scaffali di una qualche biblioteca pubblica o privata dopo aver percorso sentieri più o meno lunghi, insidiosi e, in molti casi, numerosi passaggi di mano e di luogo. La formazione di una raccolta privata, non solo di libri antichi, avviene per-lopiù nel silenzio. È nel silenzio che il collezionista coltiva la propria passione, di raccoglitore o di vero e proprio bibliofilo. I librai antiquari, gli intermediari, le trattative con le case d'asta, i cataloghi e le bibliografie consultate, gli importi pagati per ogni esemplare, tempi e modalità di acquisizione restano quasi sem-pre celati, salvo poi essere parzialmente resi noti quando la collezione diventa pubblica in relazione non solo alla fruibilità dei suoi contenuti, ma anche alla natura giuridica (vendite all'asta, donazioni a favore di una qualche istituzione pubblica). Circoscrivendo l'analisi ai bibliofili e ai collezionisti di libri antichi, è indub-bio che quelli che custodiscono in segreto i loro tesori sono in soprannumero, e chissà quanti ne conta l'Italia, culla della stampa nel Quattrocento e patria di una folta schiera di noti e meno noti chasseurs de livres. Ma non sono infrequenti i casi in cui nel collezionista nasce il desiderio di aprire le porte della propria biblioteca per mostrarne al grande pubblico, con tutti i rischi del caso, la ma-gnificenza, una volta raggiunto un adeguato livello bibliografico e scientifico. La propria dotazione di libri antichi diventa motivo di vanto e orgoglio. Lo strumento che rende ciò possibile è il catalogo, sia esso immagine di tutta la collezione o solo della parte esposta in occasione di una mostra. A quaranta volumi di altrettante edizioni quattrocentesche è accaduto di trovare posto entro le mura della biblioteca di Paolo Tiezzi Mazzoni della Stel-la Maestri in quel di Torrita di Siena. Frutto di un progetto ideato nel 2013, il catalogo degli incunaboli della collezione Tiezzi ha visto la luce nel 2018 grazie

‘Canon Law from Manuscript to Print. For a Fully Integrated Approach to the Study of
Texts, Apparatuses, and Illustrations through the Platform IVS Commune online’

IVS Commune online (www.iuscommuneonline.unito.it) is a digital tool created to facilitate the study of the transmission of legal texts in the longue durée. The database is meant for scholars to record in detail all data considered relevant for the study of the texts, through their transformation in various editions, and the passage from manuscript to print. The tool is conceived as part of a network: links towards all major projects is foreseen, such as the IconClass system, for a systematic study of the apparatus of illustrations. Digital reproductions can also be easily used, and a field is dedicated for digitisations realised according to the iiif. This paper aims at offering an illustration of the tool by showing the results obtained by applying it to the study of a major work (such as the Decretum), by recording all data of a selection of manuscripts, the editio princeps and other early printed editions.
