Agrigento

Since 2016 the Department of Culture and Civilization History at the University of Bologna has been conducting a study under the direction of Giuseppe Lepore and Enrico Giorgi, on the 3rd insula of the Roman Hellenistic Quarter of Agrigento. The tradition of studies starts from the latter part of 1800, but many questions remain. One of these concerns the original phases of the urban planning ascribed to the pre-roman age (VI-V century BC) of which there are currently few traces. We have tried to give attention to the preventive archaeology through a methodological and innovative approach with surveying techniques and non-invasive investigation of the subsoil (coordinated by Federica Boschi). The investigation carried out with the GPR method – where possible – involved all the houses of the insula III and the stenopòs III for a total surface area of around 5600 square meters. With the geomagnetic method in gradiometric configuration was carried out an investigation in an open country spaces never explored before again. Both methods proved to be quite effective, although some limitations were found during the acquisition phase due to disturbances caused by logistic impediments (tight spaces inside the already excavated houses; metal bounding fences and trees in pasture spaces) and the
physical characteristics of the site. These factors have partially affected the interpretation of the data, making it more problematic. Despite the difficulties the results obtained have given us important data that will contribute to the wider debate on the evolution of the housing area.

Over the years, the tourism industry has increasingly taken advantages of the technological progress. Thanks to the advent of the Internet, tourists have become users of this innovative communication medium that has allowed them to have the power to influence the decision-making process of potential tourists according to the choice of their next holiday destination.
In this dissertation, one of the largest travel community websites on the Internet, TripAdvisor, will be introduced in order to identify the innovation that has allowed to define it in between Web 2.0 and Web 3.0 according to the evolution of Informatics. In the last decade, TripAdvisor has become a useful way for people to share their own travel experience and, for this reason, it is being consulted at every stage-of-trip. Furthermore, the analysis focuses on the essential element of TripAdvisor, the Online Travel Review (OTR), whose content will be examined in order to show how useful its role is to identify the positive and negative aspects of accommodation, a place or restaurant.

Il vasto orizzonte che si contempla dalla collina di Girgenti include in un’unica immagine quasi l’intera dimensione della “Grande Akragas”. Questo territorio comprende, oltre lo stesso colle che coincide con il nucleo originario della città, la Valle dei Templi, la Rupe Atenea sino a San Leone, e le più recenti trasformazioni urbane. 

Il Laboratorio di Laurea, attraverso una serie di progetti interscalari, interpreta le trame dei segni naturali e antropici, antichi e recenti, per restituire quest’unica dimensione ad usi contemporanei.

Tale obiettivo ha condotto a individuare alcuni punti strategici: 

- l’ex ospedale San Giovanni in via Atenea, a Porta di Ponte, fra il centro storico e l’espansione orientale della centro abitato;

- l’ambito urbano in cui ricade la chiesa medievale di S. Maria dei Greci, nel cuore del centro storico di Agrigento, costruita su un tempio dorico dedicato ad Atena; 

- alcuni accessi agli ipogei nella città moderna, lungo il viale della Vittoria che dal Colle di Girgenti e dalla Rupe Atenea giungevano all’attuale giardino della Kolymbetra; 

- i resti del quartiere ellenistico-romano, al centro del tracciato urbano di Akragas, separati dall’area pubblica dell’antica agorà dalla strada statale 118 che giunge fino a S. Leone; 

- gli accessi al parco: nei pressi del tempio di Giunone, sul margine della strada panoramica; in corrispondenza del tempio di Vulcano, attraversato dalla linea ferroviaria che collegava Porto Empedocle e Agrigento; nell’area di Porta V, caratterizzata dal sottopasso pedonale; 

- l’area del santuario di Esculapio attraversata da via Giuseppe La Loggia e dalla strada statale 640; 

- l’ambito del laboratorio della Soprintendenza sul quale insiste l’ex mulino Taglialavoro, presso il Villaggio Peruzzo.

Questa tesi, in particolare, si collega alla lunga tradizione dei viaggi in Sicilia che da Giuseppe Maria Pancrazi giunge fino a Leo von Klenze tra il XVIII e il XIX secolo.
Il progetto, partendo dalle numerose vedute di Agrigento raccolte nei resoconti di viaggio, rintraccia gli stessi punti di vista da cui gli antichi viaggiatori osservarono il paesaggio agrigentino e, attraverso di essi, ricostruisce ampie prospettive sulla città oppure pone in primo piano le qualità dei templi. Alcune immagini, individuate nel territorio attraverso il metodo scientifico della restituzione prospettica, prendono forma; sono aule essenziali, disseminate nel territorio, di una scuola en plein air per architetti, artisti o per appassionati di disegno dal vero, che possono riprodurre, oggi, quelle stesse rappresentazioni che, più di 200 anni fa, i viaggiatori realizzarono nei loro quaderni.
All’interno di questa visione, il contributo che la tesi vuole offrire recupera la memoria delle viste realizzate dagli antichi viaggiatori durante il grand tour, utilizzandole come pretesto per ritrovare relazioni fisiche e visive tra le preesistenze architettoniche e il paesaggio. L’analisi dei resoconti di viaggio ha permesso di rintracciare nel territorio punti di osservazione privilegiati e di comprendere le motivazioni che mossero gli intellettuali di tutto il mondo per più di due secoli a giungere in Sicilia.
Ridisegnare gli ordini, studiare le dimensioni dei templi, desumere le regole compositive sottese, era infatti un allenamento indispensabile e una pratica propedeutica all’architettura moderna. Ieri come oggi, infatti, la formazione dei giovani si basava sulla conoscenza di quei principi lasciati in eredità dal passato e applicabili nelle costruzioni di tutti gli edifici.
Per stabilire una connessione con questo approccio allo studio si è pensato ad una nuova scuola di architettura moderna nella Valle dei Templi costituita da sei piccole aule en plein air da cui osservare le rovine e da cui assistere ad una lezione senza tempo sui canoni universalmente condivisi, quali proporzione, ordine, simmetria.
Tali principi oltre a permettere di individuare un legame continuo nella diverse fasi che l’architettura ha conosciuto, regolano il procedimento razionale dell’invenzione che come John Summerson sottolinea è rimasto invariato nel corso degli anni: «ciò è sempre stato e probabilmente sempre sarà il modo in cui opera la creazione architettonica. E di questo processo la storia del linguaggio classico dell’architettura fornisce l’antichissimo, il più universale ed esplicito modello».
I templi sono quindi oggetto di studio ma anzitutto meta di appassionati di archeologia e di turisti in genere. Pertanto la tesi analizza anche il problema della fruibilità del parco e propone un nuovo modo di visitare la Valle dei Templi che,  superando i tradizionali itinerari, permetta di appropriarsi dell’intero paesaggio, ricco di altre testimonianze archeologiche e paesaggistiche ancora oggi poco note. Dopo una preliminare definizione di cambiamenti sulla viabilità, necessari per ricucire la trama di sentieri attualmente interrotti e frammentati, il progetto di piccoli elementi puntuali diventa l’occasione per ricostruire un percorso continuo capace di restituire l’ampiezza e l’unitarietà della “Grande Akragas”.

The so-called Ellenistic-Roman District of Agrigento is the widest area of the known ancient household. Its investigation began in the second half of the 19th century and continues untill today. The excavations have brought to light in an area of approx. 2 acres, part of 4 Insulae concerning the urban system. It is located in a central position, near the pubblic and religious areas: the forum/agora and the theater. Starting in 2016, the University of Bologna, in collaboration with the Valle dei Templi Archaeological and Landscape Park of Agrigento, has undertaken a research project on the so-called 3rd Insula: during the first year the previous documentation, plans and drawings were recovered, as well as objects from the excavations of the 1950s, finally organized and that is being cataloged. At the same time, a new survey was carried out using modern technologies and a systematic campaign of non-invasive investigations. During the second year, has been agreed a comprehensive progra...

Between the end of the IVth and the beginning of IIIrd century BC, Agathokles ruled Sicily as monarch and connected the island with the other Hellenistic kingdoms. With some observations about polyorcetics and the historical context, this paper presents the result of a research carried out on the fortifications of Akragas, proposing a new interpretation and a theoretical reconstruction of the systems of Porta VI and
Porta VII. Starting from comparisons with the realisations due to Agathokles in Segesta, Syracuse and Selinous, other similarities are found in the arrangement of other defensive systems in Sicily, Magna Graecia and Epirus.

In diesem Aufsatz werden die oberirdischen Grabmarkierungen der Gräberfelder griechischer Koloniegründungen in der Magna Graecia näher betrachtet, d. h. entlang der Westküste Kampaniens, der Küste des ionischen Golfes von Taras über Metapont und Herakleia Minoa bis Lokroi Epizephyrioi und der Ost- und Südküste Siziliens von Naxos bis Selinus.
In vorliegender Zusammenstellung der bekannten großgriechischen Grabmarker zeigt sich ein breites Spektrum oberirdischer Grabmarkierungen. Lokale Kreationen, kolonieübergreifende Typen und Einflüsse aus dem Mutterland sind gleichermaßen zu beobachten.
Die unterschiedlichen Grabbekrönungen der Kolonien kommen in verschiedener Kombinationen vor; wir finden jeweils mehrere Grabmarkertypen pro Ort. Ein gewisser Zeitbezug der verbreitet auftretenden Typen läßt sich ebenfalls beobachten: die Grabskulptur gehört der archaischen Zeit an, der Grabbau der spätarchaischen und klassischen Zeit, die Epitymbia v. a. der hellenistischen, das figürliche Relief der klassischen und hellenistischen Zeit, und mit dem Aufkommen der Naiskoi werden Grabbau, Relief und Skulptur in einem Grabmal vereint.

Im Zentrum der Arbeit stehen Kulturaustausch und Akkulturationsaspekte, die auf die Ansiedlung der Griechen in Unteritalien und Sizilien zurückgehen und aus dem Mit- und Nebeneinanderleben der italischen und sizilischen Bevölkerungsgruppen und der griechischen Kolonisten resultieren.
Anhand der Entwicklung von Grabtypen, Beigaben und Bestattungssitten werden Einflüsse verschiedener Art untersucht wie die Beziehungen zwischen Kolonie und Mutterstadt, zwischen den Kolonien untereinander und zu ihrer Umgebung und zu der im Umland lebenden Bevölkerung. Die Untersuchung erfolgt anhand dreier Fallbeispiele – die euböischen Gründungen Pithekoussai und Kyme in Kampanien, die achäische Kolonie Metapontion und das spartanische Taras in Unteritalien und die rhodisch-kretischen Gründungen Gela und Akragas auf Sizilien.
Es gibt keinen homogenen in allen Kolonien auf die gleiche Weise ablaufenden Prozess, sondern jeweils lokale Entwicklungen, die aus den verschieden agierenden Kulturgruppen im Umland, der Zusammensetzung der griechischen Siedlergruppe, der Lage und Entwicklung der Kolonie und den naturräumlichen Gegebenheiten resultieren.
In allen drei Untersuchungsgebieten sind die griechischen Einflüsse in der indigenen Bestattungskultur deutlich; es ist jedoch keine reine Übernahme griechischer Gepflogenheiten zu beobachten. Die „Idee“, der einzelne Ritus oder Grabtyp und das Bedürfnis, diesen zu verwenden und auch zur Visualisierung sozial differenzierter Gesellschaftsgruppen zu benutzen, geht auf den durch die Koloniegründungen bedingten direkten Kontakt zurück. Die jeweilige Ausprägung und Gestaltung geschieht dann vor dem kulturellen Hintergrund der Indigenen.

Die Dissertation erscheint als zweiter Band in der neu gegründeten Reihe „Italiká“, die ausschließlich die Archäologie des vorrömischen Italien mit all ihren Bereichen zum Thema hat und damit einem aktuellen und stetig anwachsenden Forschungsinteresse entgegenkommt. „Italiká“ wird monographische Werke und thematisch einheitliche Sammelschriften aus allen Gebieten der Altertumskunde aufzunehmen, die sich im weitesten Sinne mit Quellen, Befunden und Funden zu den Bevölkerungsgruppen auf dem Territorium des heutigen Italien in vorrömischer Zeit befassen und methodisch und theoretisch innovative Ansätze bieten, die das weit gefächerte Spektrum der komplexen Welt der Kulturkontakte exemplarisch beleuchten.

In ogni tempo e in ogni luogo, le immagini hanno rappresentato un codice di comunicazione dalla straordinaria ricchezza semantica. Così fu anche per Etruschi, Italici e Greci, che attraverso esse crearono un vero e proprio mondo di significati e di valori, nel quale le singole comunità umane potevano rispecchiarsi al loro interno e autorappresentarsi verso l’esterno. Il loro linguaggio è tutt’altro che immediatamente comprensibile all’osservatore moderno. Infatti, l’immaginario non è fotografia della realtà antica, ma è, al contrario, codice comunicativo arbitrario, meditato, filtrato in conseguenza della scelta di valori che la comunità - e il singolo individuo - decidono di affidare alla memoria collettiva. L’esegesi dei significati, spesso volutamente ambigui, che le immagini sottendono rappresenta una delle più affascinanti sfide della ricerca archeologica.
Per la loro straordinaria portata semantica, le immagini furono presto integrate all’interno della ritualità funeraria, nei singoli corredi tombali, venendo a configurarsi spesso come vero e proprio manifesto ideologico del defunto o dei defunti che in quella sepoltura trovavano la loro ultima dimora. Chiave di lettura indispensabile per comprenderne la valenza semantica originaria è l’interpretazione del contesto nel quale erano inserite.
La prospettiva contestuale nella lettura delle immagini funerarie è il trait d’union imprescindibile dei contributi che questo volume raccoglie. I saggi, inoltre, si coagulano attorno ad un tema di straordinaria rilevanza nella percezione antica: la prospettiva della morte e, eventualmente, del destino oltremondano.
Il volume inaugura una serie di incontri e di riflessioni sul significato delle immagini nei contesti funerari che si propone di indagare in maniera ampia, contestuale e interculturale il problema della percezione antica dell’immaginario rapportato alla dimensione funeraria, dalla selezione, alla fruizione, all’eventuale rifunzionalizzazione del segno iconico.

This paper aims to provide the first results of a new autoptical analysis on the structures of the archaic fountain in Agrigento, known as the Santuario rupestre of S. Biagio. The monumental system, located just outside the city-walls, on the north-eastern slopes of the Rupe Atenea, behind a rock face in which is developed an anthropic cave system, is made up mainly of two parts: the building of the western basins and, forehead to the east, a fenced yard. After the first investigations directed by Pirro Marconi in 1926, Giuseppe Cultrera, in 1932, unearthed the whole monumental complex. Since the discovery, the monument was subjected to several restoration works, some of which quite invasive, that determined a difficult reading of the architectural structure in its landscape. A new analysis on the structures has been done, in order to specify the architectural configuration during the life phases of the monument and to retrace the natural and anthropical processes that affected the site since its foundation. Moreover, it has been suggested a datation within the Hellenistic period, providing comparisons with the eastern Mediterranean world.

Il presente contributo vuole fornire i primi risultati di un’indagine autoptica delle strutture della fontana “arcaica” di Agrigento, nota come Santuario Rupestre di S. Biagio. Il complesso monumentale sorge sulle pendici nord-orientali della Rupe Atenea, a ridosso di una parete rocciosa, all’interno della quale si è sviluppato un sistema di grotte antropiche; esso si compone essenzialmente di due parti: l’edificio delle vasche ad Ovest e il piazzale recintato antistante ad Est. Dopo le prime esplorazioni di Pirro Marconi, nel 1926, nel 1932 Giuseppe Cultrera portò alla luce l’intero complesso monumentale. Fin dalla sua scoperta il monumento è stato oggetto di ripetuti interventi di restauro, alcuni dei quali piuttosto invasivi, che hanno determinato una difficoltà nella lettura del complesso architettonico nel suo contesto naturale. La nuova indagine condotta sul monumento è stata quindi finalizzata a chiarire la configurazione architettonica della fontana nella successione delle fasi di vita, ricostruendo le dinamiche naturali e antropiche che hanno interessato il sito sin dalla sua fondazione. Inoltre, è stata ipotizzata una datazione del monumento nell’ambito dell’età ellenistica, fornendo confronti con il mondo mediterraneo orientale.

This paper focuses on late roman and early byzantine cooking wares recovered during recent archaeological research in the settlements of Cignana (Naro, AG) and Vito Soldano (Canicattì, AG). In the late Roman layers, until sixth century, almost all the cooking pots sherd are imports from Pantelleria island; only a few fragments belong to other ceramic classes, such as "micaceous ware". By mid seventh century imported kitchen wares no longer exist; the sherds recovered mostly belong to pots with everted rim and lids characterized by a reduced dark grey fabric with calcite grits,

The studies regarding the History of Carthage have been made, for the most part, from the point of view of its relation to Rome. In the last few years, new approaches that focus the Punic world in its own identity have grown more frequent, paying particular attention to the archaeological remains. Such has contributed to new interpretations regarding the city and its processes of colonizing the Mediterranean. This sea, which touches a vast area of the European and African Continents, has a central part in Antiquity, as do its insular territories, points of crossing routes and growth of settlements. In the context of this dissertation, which intends to observe the transition period between the Roman and Carthaginian Thalassocracies, Sicily has a great importance. Aside from being the stage of the First Punic War, this island has been, since early chronologies, occupied by numerous and diverse populations, witnessing several attempts of domination and colonization. The island will be observed since the arrival of its first inhabitants until the beginning of the war, to understand its central position and as hinge area. Besides the colonization of the Mediterranean, the role of the military sphere will also be observed. Particular relevance will be given to to the world of mercenaries under Carthaginian service, in an attempt to understand their origins and ways of use, as well as their capacity when facing the Roman army. The possibility of the existence of an army of citizen-soldiers in Carthage and its respective evolution will be discussed. The study of the Roman navy will also be addressed (specifically its birth, evolution and capacity throughout the First Punic War). All these points, which are a sum of concepts surrounding the problematics of the sea in Antiquity, will culminate in the observation of the issue of empires and the use of the maritime space as their support, by attempting to explore perspectives less observed by traditional historiography and providing a consistent and coherent study on the subjects of war and diplomacy, politics and economy, and above all, of the way in which Rome and Carthage relate among themselves and with the Mediterranean sea.

This article focuses on the burial customs in the area of the Greek colonies of Gela and Acragas in Southern Sicily, the Greek as well as the indigenous ones in the proximity of the colonies. The particular case of Butera is mentioned only briefly in this paper. The focus lies on the development of the burial customs and on possible interrelations. Burial customs allow in their diversity an analysis of several different aspects. Burial customs, grave types and grave goods follow local or regional traditions and generally changed only slowly. By grave and rite expression was given to joint moral concepts and conventions, as well as to the pursuit of an exceptional position and to the development of separated social groups. The burial customs can reflect the process of imports and shared values. Furthermore, by the modifications we can observe external influences. At first the burial customs in Gela and Acragas are presented, which in a second step will be compared with the development of the burial customs in the hinterland of both colonies after the foundations of Gela and Acragas. In a final step, I will propose some possible interpretations of the different ways of developments.

Mentre i manoscritti arabi che costituiscono il soggetto principale di questo convegno arrivarono in Agrigento dalla Spagna solo nel XVIII secolo, il mio compito è quello di portarci indietro al periodo compreso tra la metà del IX e la metà del XIII secolo, quando Agrigento e l'Agrigentino ospitavano una vasta popolazione musulmana di lingua araba.

This paper analyses Empedocles' contribution to Sicilian politics as described by the ancient sources cited by Diogenes Laertius. It offers a close analysis of a bizarre anecdote by Timaeus (FGrHist F), where Empedocles got rid of a potential tyrant to preserve political equality, also in the light of other ancient accounts in which Empedocles is described as a man of his people.

Agrigento, (ancient Akragas–Agrigentum) is located in southwest Sicily and distinguished by the Concord Temple in Valley of the Temples along with seven other temples. This list includes a chthonic temple to either Dioscuri (Dioskouroi) – or – Demeter/Persephone. Other selected temples are dedicated to: Juno/Hera Lacinia, Zeus, Dioscuri, and Herakles. Little remains of Hera’s Doric temple due to an extensive 4th century AD earthquake. Not only have earthquakes impacted Agrigento over the centuries, but also ongoing invasions and occupations by: the Canaanites; Greeks; Carthaginians; Romans; Christians; and Arabs.

All’interno del progetto FACEM presentiamo due selezioni anforiche provenienti da due contesti dell’entroterra agrigentino. Entrambi i siti sono ubicati nel territorio del moderno comune di Casteltermini. Il primo proviene dall’area santuariale di Contrada Sanfilippo – individuato a seguito di una campagna di scavo della Soprintendenza di Agrigento – connesso al sito indigeno situato a Monte Roveto; il secondo proviene dal contesto di Contrada Fontana di Paolo, in cui sono state rinvenute tre cisterne di epoca greca. Sebbene contigui, e in parte contemporanei, i due siti hanno restituito dati differenti l’uno dall’altro. L’analisi della classe anforica ha permesso di fare delle preliminari riflessioni sulla provenienza di tali contenitori e sulle reti di distribuzione che ne hanno permesso l’arrivo in questa zona.

Within FACEM project, we submit two amphorae selections that come from two contests located in the hinterland of Agrigento. Both of them are set in the area of the municipality of Casteltermini. The first selection come from the sanctuarial area  of Contrada Sanfilippo – discovered as a consequence of an archaeological excavation led by the Superintendence of Agrigento – connected to the indigenous settlement of Monte Roveto; the second selection come from Contrada Fontana di Paolo in which three greek cisterns have been discovered. Although the two sites are contiguous, and contemporary for a while, they have returned, from each other, different data. The amphorae analizated, allowed us to postulate considerations about the provenance of these vessels and the networks that have allowed them to reach in this area.

Nella mappa di riperimetrazione della Riserva Naturale di Punta Bianca e Scoglio Patella della Giunta Musumeci la superficie da proteggere è stata ridotta di almeno cinque volte; le zone A, quelle con vincoli stringenti, sono tre piccole strisce di terra interrotte e distanti l’una dall’altra. E scandalosamente è rimasto fuori dalla riserva proprio il famigerato poligono di guerra utilizzato dall'Esercito italiano e dai Marines USA di Sigonella. Insomma un vero e proprio provvedimento truffa che legittima e consolida il via vai di blindati e carri armati e la prosecuzione delle cannonate a poche centinaia di metri da uno dei luoghi più incantevoli del Mediterraneo.

The Sicilian poleis made some of the brightest examples of the art of engraving dies. Akragas at the end of the V century B.C. mints silver and golden coins: its decadrachms and tetradrachms, with their four-horses chariot and the two eagles, are a beautiful expression of engravers’ expertise in coin art. As regards the silver issues we have a contribution by Charles Seltman, published in 1948, which proposed an interpretation of coin types and a chronology of the decadrachms and tetradrachms. In my master degree dissertation (2010) I proposed an update of Seltaman’s paper, collecting and analyzing 87 specimens. Seltman had access to only 42 coins to identify combinations and dies. As he did, to observe the pieces I also used photographic reproductions, gathered by Sylloge, collections and online auctions. This method – which is not exempt from further revisions and improvements – led me to produce new data that allow to think in a different way to this issue and its chronology and use.

L’esplorazione archeologica del Teatro di Agrigento, scoperto nel 2016, è appena cominciata e l’interpretazione dei dati di scavo è ad uno stadio preliminare; attualmente le indagini hanno interessato in modo molto limitato gli interri coevi alla costruzione originaria e alle successive ristrutturazioni del complesso. Ciononostante, con le ricerche condotte finora è stato possibile acquisire alcuni elementi per la ricostruzione della sequenza delle fasi edilizie e per una prima ipotesi di datazione. I reperti selezionati per questo contributo riguardano un contesto rituale recuperato dagli strati di riempimento di uno dei vani di sostruzione dell’angolo sud occidentale dell’edificio.
