From Henry David Thoreau to Bill McKibben, critics and philosophers have long sought to demonstrate how a sufficient life—one without constant, environmentally damaging growth—might still be rich and satisfying. Yet one crucial episode in the history of sufficiency has been largely forgotten. Green Victorians tells the story of a circle of men and women in the English Lake District who attempted to create a new kind of economy, turning their backs on Victorian consumer society in order to live a life dependent not on material abundance and social prestige but on artful simplicity and the bonds of community.

SDG 8 calls for promoting 'sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment and decent work for all'. Even as it highlights the importance of labour rights for all, it also makes visible some significant tensions. We note, for example, that despite many critiques of narrow economic measures of growth, the focus here remains on GDP and per capita growth. This is problematic, we argue, because the GDP productive boundary excludes much of social reproductive work. This puts SDG8 in tension with SDG 5 which calls for the recognition of the value of unpaid care and domestic work. There has been a significant increase in the rate of working women in the formal and informal sector. However, there has not been a subsequent gender shift in the doing of social reproductive work. In this paper we argue SDG 8's focus on decent work and economic growth is inadequate; that productive employment and decent work for all men and women by 2030 needs to take into account the value and costs of social reproduction. We trace key historical debates on work to argue that both gender and labour rights have to underpin SDG 8 if its promise of inclusive, sustainable and decent work is to be realized.

Covid-19 has lain bare the fragility of existing economic systems. Any decline in market activity threatens systemic collapse. But it doesn’t have to be this way. To be more resilient to future crises –pandemic, climatic, financial, or political – we need to build systems capable of scaling back production in ways that do not cause loss of livelihood or life. We need to make the case for degrowth.

Degrowth is not simply a contraction of the economy, it is living meaningfully, enjoying simple pleasures, working less, and sharing and relating more with others and working less, in more equal societies. Its goal is to purposefully slow things down in order to minimize harm to humans and earth systems. The world will change after the virus, and there will be struggles over which paths to take. But the time is ripe for us to refocus on what really matters: not GDP, but the health and wellbeing of our people and our planet. In a word, degrowth.

Degrowth is an emerging social movement that overlaps with proposals for systemic change such as anti-globalization and climate justice, commons and transition towns, basic income and Buen Vivir. Degrowth in Movement(s) reflects on the current situation of social movements aiming at overcoming capitalism, industrialism and domination. The essays ask: What is the key idea of the respective movement? Who is active? What is the relation with the degrowth movement? What can the degrowth movement learn from these other movements and the other way around? Which common proposals, but also which contradictions, oppositions and tensions exist? And what alliances could be possible for broader systemic transformations?

Aim of the paper is to give a critical overview on how work and labour have been conceptualized within the heterogeneous degrowth discourse. While degrowth has articulated a sophisticated critique of capitalistic growth not only from an environmental perspective, but also with respect to the structural function of growth for Welfare democracies and to its crisis, (re)thinking and framing work/labour in an envisioned degrowth society remains one of the biggest challenges within the degrowth discourse. After a detailed overview of the different perspectives on work/labour in the degrowth discourse, the paper focuses on the specific contribution of materialist ecofeminism. It concludes by indicating possible cross-fertilizations and alliances between degrowth and materialist ecofeminism with respect to social-ecological reproduction.

Notwithstanding that the effect of over visitation to tourism destinations is not a new subject in the tourism studies field, the European summer of 2016 witnessed a dramatic rise in the number of cases and manifestations of overtourism in Venice, Barcelona, Amsterdam, Reykjavik and Santorini, among others, with objections by host communities against tourists and tourism appearing to have reached a zenith. This has generated enormous tensions in overtourism affected destinations and in turn has driven the intensification of policy maker and scholarly attention toward seeking antidotes to what is considered paradoxical and problematic.

Indeed, the contradictions are palpable as, while the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) advocates for sustainable and inclusive tourism, it also celebrates the rise in the growing numbers of tourists crisscrossing the globe. The question of what to do in response to overtourism is pressing.

This book will make a much-needed contribution moving beyond the ‘top 10 things you can do about overtourism’. By examining the evolution of the overtourism phenomena, this volume will explore the genesis of overtourism and the system dynamics underlining its emergence. Also, glocal economic, socio-political, environmental and sustainability discourses will be acknowledged and integrated. A rigorous scientific approach that delimits the hysteria inherent in the current discussion will be employed towards undertaking analyses that are cognisant of systems-thinking and contemporary paradigms around sustainable development, resilience planning and degrowth.
