History of Ottoman Science

Salih Zeki, 19. yüzyılın sonları ile 20. yüzyılın başlarında yaşamış bir entelektüel olarak Osmanlı Devleti’nin son dönemlerine tanıklık etmiş ve modern dünyayı tanıma fırsatı bulmuş bir Türk aydınıdır. Darüşşafaka’daki başarılı öğrencilik yıllarının ardından Paris’te elektrik ve telgrafçılık üzerine eğitim almış, ardından Posta ve Telgraf Nezâreti’nde uzun yıllar mühendis olarak çalışmıştır. Döneminin etkili bir ismi olarak Rasathâne-i Âmire, Mekteb-i Sultanî, Dârülfünûn gibi önemli kurumların başında yöneticilik görevlerinde bulunmuş ve birçok eğitim kurumunda matematik, fizik, geometri ve astronomi dersleri vermiştir. Matematik tarihi ve matematiksel bilimler üzerine yazdığı ansiklopedik eserleri ile II. Meşrutiyet dönemi entelektüel hayatına katkı sağlamış; bilim tarihi, matematik, fizik, astronomi, mantık ve felsefe gibi birçok farklı konu hakkında yazdığı makaleleri, ders kitapları, telif ve çevirileri ile Batı tarzı matematiksel-bilimsel yöntemleri Türkiye’de tanıtmak ve yerleştirmek için önemli bir çaba göstermiştir. Bu çalışmada Salih Zeki’nin hayatı ve çalışmaları ele alınmış, yayımlanmış eserleri incelenmiş ve Türk bilim tarihçiliğine katkıları değerlendirilmiştir. Ayrıca 2021 yılında, vefatının yüzüncü yıl dönümü vesilesiyle yaptığımız araştırmaya dayanarak kendisi hakkında dostlarının ve öğrencilerinin kaleme aldıkları anma yazıları ile yakın dönemde yayımlanan akademik ve popüler çalışmalar derlenerek bir “Salih Zeki Kaynakçası” denemesi yapılmıştır.

16th century is the golden era of the Ottoman science. That broad conclusion is also valid for mathematics. In that century Ottomans produced original treaties and commentaries more than ever. Unfortunately, all the Ottoman texts has not been translated and examined yet. Therefore all the general conclusions and the evaluations about the Ottoman mathematics, would be in inadequate and insufficient. Nevertheless, when the 16th century compared with the remaining periods, it seems to be possible to obtain an acceptable conclusion.

This article received in 2018 the CIEPO (Comité International des Études Pré-ottomanes et Ottomanes) prize for the best article by an early-career scholar in pre-Ottoman or Ottoman studies.

This study seeks to determine the extent of the patronage of the science of the stars (ʿilm al-nuǧūm) at the court of the eighth Ottoman sultan Bāyezīd II (r. 886/1481-918/1512). Throughout the medieval and early modern Islamicate world munaǧǧims (astronomer-astrologers) offered rulers their expertise in calculating heavenly configurations and interpreting them with a view to predicting future events; here the Ottoman polity is no exception. In the case of Bāyezīd II, however, the sheer number of munaǧǧims employed and texts and instruments commissioned by or dedicated to the sultan unequivocally singles him out and makes it possible to further argue that his deliberate attempt to personally study and cultivate the science of the stars was inextricably related to the broader political, ideological, and cultural agendas at the time.

II. Abdülhamid ve pandemi. 2019 yılının son çeyreğinden bu yana yaklaşık iki yıldır covid-19 yahut corona olarak bilinen virüsün ortaya çıkardığı salgın hastalık ile mücadele eden dünya, bugüne kadar buna benzer sayısız hastalık ile karşı karşıya gelmiştir. Bilhassa 19. yüzyılda artan nüfus ve ulaşım imkânları, hastalıkların çok daha hızlı şekilde yayılmasına neden olmuştur. Bu yüzden geçen yüzyılların günümüze benzer salgın hastalıklar, pandemiler ve karantinalar ile dolu olduğunu görmekteyiz. Osmanlı Devleti de her ülke gibi bu hastalıklar ile mücadele etmek durumunda kalmıştır. Çiçek, kızamık, frengi, cüzzam, tifüs, tifo, dizanteri, difteri, verem, boğmaca, sıtma, veba ve kolera hastalıklarının görüldüğü bu yüzyılda günümüzle paralellik gösteren en önemli hastalık kolera olmuştur. 1816’larda Hindistan’da ortaya çıkan ve hızla küresel bir yayılım göstererek 19. yüzyıl boyunca tam 6 kez pandemi ilan edilen bu hastalığa karşı alınan tedbirler, bugün corona virüs için alınan tedbirlerle oldukça benzerdir. Yüzyılın son çeyreğinde tahta çıkan ve 33 yıl tahtta kalan Sultan II. Abdülhamid’in (1876-1909) hastalıklara karşı aldığı tedbirler ve ne oranda başarılı olduğu çalışmanın odaklandığı temel konudur. Sultan Abdülhamid’in hastalık, mikrop, hijyen, dezenfeksiyon, tedavi gibi kavramlara nasıl baktığı, bunlara bakış açısında çocukluğu ve şehzadeliği döneminde yaşadığı olayların nasıl etkili olduğu ve bu etkenlerin sultanlığı dönemine nasıl yansıdığı değerlendirilmiştir. Ayrıca karantina, etüv, tahaffuzhane, kordon vb. uygulamalar ile salgınları önlemede ne gibi başarılar sağlandığı; ülkenin dört bir yanında hangi önemli hastanelerin kurulduğu, modern tıp tekniklerinin ülke topraklarına nasıl getirildiği, bugünkü sağlık sisteminin temellerinin nasıl atıldığı irdelenmiştir.

لماذا هُدم مرصد إسطنبول؟

لماذا بُني المرصد أصلاً؟ ما هي الضرورات العلمية وغير العلمية التي اقتضت بناؤه؟ هل بُني لأغراض تنجيمية كما هو شائع؟ وهل هُدم لأسباب تنجيمية كما هو شائع أيضاً؟ ماهي المصادر التاريخية المتوفرة عن المرصد، وماهي الروايات الشائعة عن حادثة هدمه؟ من هو ذلك الفلكي الدمشقي تقي الدين بن معروف الذي قاد حملة تأسيس وإنشاء المرصد؟ ما هي مهاراته العلمية والفلكية؟ وما هي المواضيع العلمية التي برع فيها وكتب عنها؟ هل كانت له اهتمامات تنجيمة وكتابات مشهورة في علم أحكام النجوم؟ ما الذي دفعه للتفكير في هذا المشروع العلمي الكبير؟ وما هي العوامل التي ساعدته على تحقيق هدفه؟
من هو السلطان مراد الثالث الذي تبنّى بناء المرصد، وذرّ عليه الأموال كالرمل، ثم لم يلبث أن أصدر القرار بهدمه؟ ماهي اهتماماته العلمية وتوجهاته الدينية والثقافية؟ هل كانت شخصيته مزاجية متذبذبة غير مستقرة، أم أن عوامل أخرى هي التي دفعته للتذبذب في موضوع المرصد؟ ما الذي كان يطمح إليه عندما قرر بناء المرصد، وما الذي أصبح يخشىاه عندما قرر هدمه؟
ما هو الوضع العلمي في أوروبا في فترة بناء المرصد؟ وما هي المراصد التي أنشأت في أوروبا بالتزامن مع مرصد إسطنبول؟ من هو تايكو براهي الذي أسس مرصداً بالتزامن مع مرصد تقي الدين؟ كيف كانت علاقته بالملك فريدريك الثاني في الدنمارك، وما هو الدعم المادي والمعنوي الذي تلقاه منه؟ ما هو وضع المؤسسات العلمية في أوروبا في تلك الفترة؟ وما هو المستوى العلمي لتايكو والوضع التقني لمرصده؟ كيف تعامل مع نظرية مركزية الشمس؟ وماهي الإنجازات التي حققها في مجالات علم الفلك؟
ما هي العلاقة بين علم الفلك والتنجيم في الزمن الذي بُني فيه المرصد؟ هل كان هناك تداخل بين علوم الفلك والتنجيم، أم كان هناك فصل صريح بينهما؟ وما هي مواقف علماء الدين، بحكم الشرع، من علوم الفلك عامة والتنجيم خاصة؟ هل كان هناك إجماع بين علماء الدين حول هذا الموضوع؟ وهل كان للدين دور في هدم المرصد؟ من هم علماء الدين المسلمون الذين كان لهم حضور فاعل وتأثير واسع في الأوساط العربية والعثمانية في فترة بناء وهدم المرصد؟ وما هو وضع العلوم العقلية والنقلية في تلك الفترة؟
ماهي التوجهات والأفكار الدينية حول علم الفلك، وما هي المرجعية الإسلامية للأفكار الفلكية التي ظهرت في فترة بناء المرصد؟ من هو جلال الدين السيوطي الذي أعاد تقديم علم الهيئة على الأصول الدينية الإسلامية؟ لماذا كتب كتابه في علم الهيئة السُنيّة، ولماذا لاقى ذلك الكتاب رواجاً واسعاً في تلك الفترة؟ ما هو تأثير رواج الأفكار الأسطورية عن الفلك والكون التي قدّمها السيوطي على مسيرة العلم الطبيعي في السياق العربي-العثماني؟ وهل كان هذا سبباً لظهور النزعات الأصولية المتشددة أم نتيجة له؟ وهل كان للتعصب الديني دور في هدم المرصد؟
تحدد هذه الأسئلة حدود مجال الفضول المعرفي الذي تحوم في فضائه مباحث هدم الرصد، عنوان القسم الأول من هذه الدراسة، كما تحدد مسارات التحريض الفكري للبحث عن أجوبة، أشافيه كانت أم غير شافية، لإلقاء بعض الضوء على مسيرة استكشاف التطور العلمي في العالم العربي-العثماني بعد ظهور نظرية كوبرنيكوس. لا نسعى من خلال هذه الأسئلة للوصول إلى جواب نهائي في موضوع هدم المرصد، فليس هناك باعتقادنا جواب نهائي في موضوع كهذا، وإنما نسعى لتحديد نقطة بداية ذات إحداثيات معرفية جديدة، نقطة انطلاق من تحت ظلال الهدم لتقصي مسيرة العلوم عند العرب باتجاه لطالما تجاهله المؤرخون، ربما لأنه لا يقدم معالم مضيئة وشيقة للمفاخرة والتباهي، ولكنه يرسم مساراً تاريخياً هاماً لابد من استكشافه لمعرفة الخيارات الفكرية التي حددت مساره، والمحطات العلمية التي وقف عندها، والحاضر الذي صنعه لنا.

There is no word for the ‘supernatural’ in classical Ottoman, and one could argue that even the very notion is absent, since the notion of ‘nature’ is very near to that of ‘God’, and (as the latter is omnipotent) there is no extraordinary event that cannot be potentially true. The Ottomans would rather speak of the ‘marvelous’ or the ‘extraordinary’, which as mental categories played a major role in the medieval imagination, both in East and West. As defined by al-Qazwīnī (1203-1283), author of a very well-known collection of mirabilia, there are ‘ordinary marvels’ (‘ajā’ib) and ‘extraordinary’ ones (gharā’ib); the first category has mainly to do with strange places, monuments, flora or fauna, while the second includes both the miracles of Prophets and saints and the works of demons, as well as magic, divination, and other man-driven occult phenomena. The transition from more ‘medieval’-style authors, such as Yazıcıoğlu Ahmed Bîcan (d. after 1466), Aşık Mehmed (d. after 1598) or Cinânî (d. 1595) to more ‘scientific’ scholars like Kâtip Çelebi brings about a widening of the sources used with the addition of Western European works, considered more authoritative, rather than an abolishment of the supernatural element per se.

In this work, Osmanli Seririyat Mecmuasi / Revue Médicale Ottomane published between 1910-1914 is studied and a detailed List of Contents is presented. Osmanlı Seririyat Mecmuası was a very important clinical journal with its editorial board and content. It’s scope covered the medical literature of the time within medical journals written in Ottoman Alphabet. The Journal was not published for one year due to the 1st Balkan War. The most recent treatments of the time, clinical observations, and medical news were published by the Journal, whose editorial board was comprised of the faculty members of the Darülfünun School of Medicine, in Istanbul. Unfortunately, The Journal should be considered as a part of the project of the transformation of the Cemiyet-i Tıbbiye-i Osmaniye into a “Ottoman Medical Academy. it’s publication was terminated due to World War I.

This article examines the translation, circulation, and adaptation of the medical
opinion of Spanish physician Nicolas Monardes (d. 1588) on tobacco in the Ottoman
Empire. In addition to medical and encyclopedist authors, the spread of new medical
knowledge in learned and eventually popular registers was the result of the efforts of
religious authorities. These latter authorities, namely jurists, Sufis, and preachers, took
an interest in the bodily and mental effects of smoking for its moral implications. In
forming their medical-moral discourse, they sought and studied contemporary medical
works of both Ottoman and European provenance. Challenging the strict division
between learned and popular medicine, this article argues that Ottoman religious
authorities, while often excluded from the history of medicine, played significant roles
in the circulation, adaptation, and localization of medical knowledge.

İstanbul Mevleviliği adlı doktora çalışmasında farklı şekil kodlamalarında bulunup yeni ilişki nitelikleri geliştirilmiştir. Bu bağlamda aile bağları, dostluk-tanışıklıklar ve -alanında ilk defa- şeyh-mürîd/münîb/muhib ilişkilerinin de ilave edilmesiyle entelektüel ağ analizine yeni bir boyut kazandırılmış, sadece hoca-talebe ilişkilerinden oluşan bir yapıdan daha fazlasını; sosyal-siyasî-manevî irtibatları da gösteren çok katmanlı bir sosyogram geliştirilmiştir. Çalışmanın son bölümünün hülasası olan bu sosyogramda âlimler, sanatkârlar, bürokratlar, şairlerden oluşan yaklaşık 200 şahsiyetin farklı nitelikteki bağlantıları gösterilmiş ve böylece entelektüel tarihimize yönelik oluşturulacak haritanın bir kesiti belirgin hale getirilmeye çalışılmıştır.

Résumé

La présente étude traite de la contribution des photographes français au développement de l’art photographique dans l’Orient méditerranéen et des leurs collaborations avec les photographes locaux. Plus précisément, nous nous référons à l’influence exercée par Philibert Perraud sur l’œuvre de Philippos Margaritis, professeur à l’Ecole royale des arts à Athènes et nous examinons l’installation réussie des photographes grecs (Athanase Calphas et Solon Vathis) à Paris. De plus, nous étudions le séjour des photographes français à Constantinople et leur contribution à la diffusion de la photographie en Orient. En outre, nous présentons des cas des photographes locaux comme Abdullah frères, membres de la Société de photographie de Paris, qui après avoir voyagé en France, ont maintenu leurs contacts avec les photographes européens. Nous nous référons également aux photographes du Moyen Orient comme  Yessayi Garabedian, futur patriarche, qui a visité Manchester, Londres et Paris en 1863 et nous abordons la collaboration de Félix Bonfils avec  Henri Rombau et Georges Sabounji, qui ont contribué au développement de la photographie en Orient. Après plusieurs années de recherche, nous avons découvert le différent judiciaire entre les photographes  Hippolyte Arnoux et Constantin Zangaki qu’il a accusé de vol intellectuel. Notons qu’après une période d’apprentissage auprès des photographes occidentaux, les photographes de l’Empire ottoman, qui appartenaient en général aux communautés religieuses, ont gagné leur autonomie ouvrant leurs propres ateliers et qu’au début leurs photographies étaient conçues dans le même esprit orientaliste que celle des photographes occidentaux.
Abstract
Initially introduced by traveler photographers and local photographers, photography was gradually adopted by local artists in the Mediterranean Orient. Trained in France or associated to French photographers, Oriental photographers became progressively independent, even able to compete technically and artistically with their European colleagues. Moreover, clichés by photographers such as Philippos Margaritis, Abdullah frères, Paul Sébah were exposed at international exhibitions and gained theirs authors reputation. And installation of photographers such as Bonfils in the Middle-East contributed to the diffusion of the photographic art in the region.

Merâga Gözlemevi’nin kurucusu Nasirüddin-i Tûsî'nin Risâle-i Sî Fasl (Otuz Bölümlük Risale) adıyla meşhur olan el-Muhtasar fî İlm el-Tencîm ve Marifet el-Takvîm adlı eseri ilm-i nücum alanında yazılmış temel eserlerden biridir. Bu eser, şair ve âlim Ahmed-i Dâi tarafından Tercüme-i Sî Fasl fi't-Taḳvîm adıyla Osmanlı Türkçesine çevrilmiştir. Bu çevirinin öne çıkan özelliği, Ortaçağ astronomisindeki terimlerin Türkçe karşılıklarının verilmesidir. Ahmed-i Dâî’nin verdiği bu Türkçe karşılıklar, Osmanlı  âlimleri tarafından yüzyıllar boyunca kullanılmıştır. Ahmed-i Dâî, çevirisinin başında bu eseri Türkçeye tercüme etmedeki amacının yeni başlayanlar için eseri anlaşılır kılmak ve kolaylıkla yararlanmalarını sağlamak olduğunu açık bir biçimde belirtir. Ahmed-i Dâî bu amacına uygun olarak ebced rakamları (harf rakamları); Hicrî, Rûmî, İranî ve Celâlî takvimleri; gezegenler, burçlar ve saat türleri gibi astronomi konularıyla bazı astroloji konularını oldukça yalın bir dil ile Farsçadan Türkçeye aktarmıştır.
   
Bu kitapta, eserin kapsamlı ve sağlam bir metnini oluşturmak için eserin iki nüshası üzerinden yapılan çeviri yazısı, metnin günümüz Türkçesi’ne aktarımı, metnin gramatikal dizini üzerinde hazırlanmış sözlüğü, metinde yer alan astronomi/astroloji kavramları için ayrıca hazırlanmış müstakil bir sözlükçe ve eserin kullanılan nüshalarının tıpkıbasımları yer almaktadır.

İmam Buhârî’nin el-Câmi‘u’s-sahîh’i İslam Dünyasında üzerine en çok çalışma yapılan eserlerin başında gelmektedir. Sahîh-i Buhârî’nin ulema arasında yaygınlığı zamanla toplumun geniş kesimlerine yayılmış ve Buhârî hatim meclisleri tertip edilmiştir. Bu hatim meclisleri aynı zamanda savaş, hastalık ve kıtlık zamanlarında da teberrüken okunan bir gelenek haline dönüşmüştür. Osmanlı döneminde de Sahîh-i Buhârî’ye has ders geleneği oluşmuş, camilerde halka Buhârî-i Şerîf okutan dersiamlara Buhârîhân denilmiştir. Osmanlı döneminde Buhârî hatimlerinin yoğun olarak başladığı dönem aynı zamanda İslam dünyasındaki ulema ile irtibatın güçlendiği İstanbul’a birçok hadis âliminin geldiği ve İstanbul’da hadis ilminin camilerde tedrisinin artmaya başladığı bir döneme de tekabül etmektedir. Büyük çoğunluğu selâtin vakıflarından karşılanan Buhârîhânlık geleneği özellikle son dönemlerde Osmanlı coğrafyasının tamamında görülen bir geleneğe dönüşmüştür. Bu çalışmada Buhârîhanlık geleneğini incelenecek, Osmanlı öncesindeki varlığı, Osmanlı’da bu uygulamanın başladığı zaman ve Osmanlı hadisçiliğine etkisi konusunda bazı düşünceler paylaşılacaktır.

“Felsefenin kelâmlaşması” dediğimiz klasik sonrası İslâm düşüncesi sürecinde göz ardı edilen birkaç önemli konu yatmaktadır ve bu konulardan illiyet meselesi erken dönem Osmanlılarda, bilhassa Fâtih dönemindeki ilim faaliyetlerini anlamlandırmamız bakımından bize birkaç ipucu sunacak. İllet ve malul arasındaki ilişki, bize insanlar ve doğada yer alan cüzîler arasındaki ilişkileri verir. Tanrı doğaya devamlı müdahalede bulunabilir mi ya da mucizeler ve mead nasıl gerçekleşir, tüm bu konular aslında illiyetin konularıdır. Gazzâlî’nin Tehâfütü’l-felâsife adlı kitabı ve ona Fâtih döneminde yazılan iki şerh ya da müstakil eserde, Fâtih dönemi alimlerinin ikincil nedensellikler hakkındaki görüşlerini ve böylelikle yeryüzünde gerçekleşen şuun hakkındaki düşüncelerini gözlemlemekteyiz. Osmanlı âlimleri Hocazâde ve A. Tûsî, ikincil nedensellikleri kabul etmekle beraber, Tanrı’nın belirli sınırlandırmalar içerisinde doğaya müdahalede bulunabildiklerini düşünmektedirler. Hem bu yazıda konu edilecek kelâm-felsefe muhâkemeleri olsun hem Gennadios’un Ortodoks Hıristiyan akaidi ve Mollâ Câmî’nin kelâm-felsefe-tasavvuf muhâkemesi (ya da Nakşîbendî akidesi) olsun, Fâtih döneminde yazılan âlemin varoluşunu ve Tanrı’nın zatlarını tartışan fizik-metafizik metinlerinin hepsinin Tek’ten gelen zaruri bir illet-malûl silsilesini savunmadığını, aksine Tanrı’ya mutlak bir kudret veren yaratma teorilerine göre savlarını şekillendirdiklerini görüyoruz. Yalnız bu okumalar, dönemin Osmanlı medreselerinde okutulan fizik kitaplarında herhangi bir illet-malûl ilişkisinin zarûrî olmadığı anlamına gelmiyor, sadece kozmolojik olarak İbn Sînâ’nın sudûr determinizmine karşı Tehâfüt’lerde yer alan büyük bir eleştiri var ve bu eleştirinin İbn Sînâ sonrası literatürde âlemin kadîm olmadığı düşüncesinin felsefi olarak yaygınlaşmasıyla yakından bir ilgisi var. Aksine, Tecrîd ve Şerhü’l-mevâkıf kitaplarının hâşiyeleri tâm illet tanımlamasına göre tüm şartlar yerine getirilip tüm maniler ortadan kaldırıldığında illetin çıkmasının da deterministik bir şekilde zorunlu olduğunu söyler. Dönemin medrese kitaplarında sudûr determinizmi reddedilmiş olsa da N. Tûsî’nin Tecrîd’inden gelen yeni bir determinizm tanımı önerilmiştir.

The phenomenon of the “philosophization of kalām” includes many different philosophical discussion that are often disregarded in the secondary literature of Islamic intellectual history. Looking at one of these highly contested issues, the nature of causal relations among post-classical philosophers will reveal us some important details about the intellectual world of a 15th-Century Ottoman scholar. The relationship between cause and effect gives us also the framework for the relationship among human agents as well as the particulars existing in nature. Questions such as “Could God intervene in nature?” or with regard to the issues of miracles and resurrection, “Could they be possible physically?” are among the most debated issues in causality. When the later two commentaries or independent works of Khojazāda and Ṭūsī on al-Ghazālī’s celeberated Tahāfut al-Falāsifa are assayed in detail, it is seen that these texts give us a significant picture of how these scholars perceived the issue of secondary causalities in a 15th-Century Ottoman madrasa context. In addition to accepting the theory of secondary causalities in broader terms, both of these Ottoman scholars also acknowledge that within some limitations, God could also interfere with the worldly affairs by changing the conventional course of things. On other words, what this paper argues is that all of the works that are analyzed here such as madrasa physics- kalām handbooks, Gennadios’ Orthodox creed and Mollā Jāmī’s adjudication among philosophers, theologians and sufis, argue against scientific causal determinism or in other words, the necessary relationship between cause and effect as it is accepted in classical Arabic philosophy (especially in Ibn Sīnā’s corpus). Instead of arguing for a necessary causal chain, all of these texts grant God an eternal power for creation and a room of intervening in worldly affairs. However, the rejection of Avicennan emanationism does not mean that there could be no necessary relationship between a cause and an effect. There is a very significant objection against the Avicennan (later Neo-Platonist) cosmology in Tahāfut and this objection is very instrumental in supporting the later post-classical arguments against the pre-eternity of the world. On the other hand, when we look at the important philosophical handbooks of the post-classsical madāris such as Tajrīd and Sharḥ al-Mawāqif, we see that according to the new conception of al-cilla al-tāmma, there is also a deterministic scheme for the necessary relationship between cause and effect such that when all the relevant conditions (as well as the removal of the obstacles) are acquired, then a cause has to necessitate its effect. That is to say, even though later madrasa handbooks or books of philosophy rejected the Avicennan emanationism and determinism, we see that there is a redefined determinism in causal relations that are accepted by the scholars of the time.

Mai exact, prin acest demers se încearcă relevarea modului în care domnul este evidențiat și reprezentat în public prin intermediul muzicii – cum anume ajută muzica la manifestarea preeminenței domnești. Atât în Occident, cât și în Orient, muzica a fost un atribut al suveranității și, de aceea, relația avută în vedere este mult mai importantă decât se crede la o primă vedere. Prin intermediul celor douăsprezece capitole, autonome din punct de vedere al conținutului, dar unitare prin prisma ideii centrale, sunt prezentate diversele formații muzicale întâlnite la curtea domnească, cea mai importantă dintre ele fiind meterhaneaua, cea care evidențiază cel mai fidel relația muzică‒putere politică, cu un bogat bagaj simbolic. De asemenea, lucrarea este o reevaluare a istoriei muzicii vechi românești, insuficient studiată în România, pornind de la identificarea corectă a tuturor formațiilor muzicale întâlnite la curtea domnească, a instrumentelor muzicale, dar și a termenilor muzicali, întrucât în istoriografia românească dedicată subiectului s-au strecurat multe confuzii și inadvertențe, unele cauzate de traduceri greșite ale izvoarelor literare referitoare la muzică.

Ali Münşi, mostly known as Bursalı Ali Münşi, is one of the most eminent physicians in the 18th century. He started his educational career at Bursa madrasas and continued by having tuition classes from many famous Ottoman physicians and scholars. After completing his madrassa education, he became mudarris at Bursa and Istanbul madrasas. Owing to his achievements, he entered the Ottoman Palace and became one of the members of the royal physicians (etibba-yı hassa). Then, he was appointed as head physician to Galatasaray Enderun School. Ali Münşi has many works about practical medicine like Bida’at al-mübtedi, Cerrahnâme, Tuhfe-i aliyye, Altınotu Risalesi.
Tuhfe-i Aliye is known as Kınakına Risalesi (chinchona) that is about how to treat a patient, who has the Malaria disease, by using a plant, named as cinchona, during the treatment. As well, it deals with the historical process how cinchona came to the Ottoman lands from Europe. It was the first monograph written about “kınakına”.

Kitapçı Karabet Keşişyan Efendi (1850–1911) Osmanlı matbuatına büyük katkılarda bulunmuş Ermeniler arasında başat bir isimdir. Üretken ve girişimci bir isim olan Karabet, II. Abdülhamid (1876–1909) döneminin en meşhur yayıncıları arasındadır. Bu alandaki faaliyetleri, on dokuzuncu yüzyılda Osmanlı İmparatorluğu’nda tedricen meydana gelen sosyokültürel değişimleri büsbütün yansıtır. Özellikle Osmanlı merkeziyle kurduğu ihtiyatlı ilişkiler ve merkezin imtiyazları sayesinde akranlarından ayrışmaktadır. Türk askeri ve mülki okullarının kitap tedarikçiliğini yapmaktayken ağırlıkla Türkçe ders kitapları yayımladı ve kendi adına tesis ettiği matbaasıyla 1889’dan yirminci yüzyıl başlangıcına kadar bu alanda tekel sahibi oldu. Faaliyetleriyle Mecidiye ve Osmaniye nişanlarına layık görüldüğü gibi uluslararası ödüller de aldı. Ancak bu özgün yanlarına rağmen doğrudan kendisini konu edinen bir araştırma yapılmadı ve Osmanlı matbuatına katkıları ile yayımladığı kitap katalogları herhangi bir çalışmada dikkate alınmadı. en: Ottoman-Armenian bookseller, publisher, and printer Karabet Keşişyan Efendi (Garabed Keshishian, 1850–1911), is an influential name among the Armenians who left important marks in the history of Ottoman printing. As a prolific and enterprising figure, he was one of the most famous printers of the Hamidian Era (1876–1909). His contributions in this field reflect the sociocultural changes that occurred gradually in the Ottoman Empire in the nineteenth century. Thanks to his prudent relations with the Ottoman center and his privileged position, he is distinguished from his peers. He was the book supplier of Turkish military and civil schools. His printing house published mostly Turkish language textbooks and became the sole provider for the Turkish military and civil schools from 1889 until the beginning of the twentieth century. He was decorated with many international awards as well as the orders of the Mecidiye and the Osmaniye. Despite these unique features, he was not subjected to a comprehensive research, and his contributions to Ottoman printing as well as his book catalogues were not studied. This research aims to fill this gap in the literature by unearthing his printing activities through quantitative data, exploring his methods of work and connections with his circles.

This article pays a particular attention to an Arab army physician and scholar from the mid-19th century who placed empirical science at the center of Islamic thought and situated it within Qurʾānic exegetical debates. He is the Egyptian Muḥammad ibn Aḥmad al-Iskandarānī, a medical officer who ended up working in Ottoman Syria, and whose works were copied and printed (in)directly by the Ottomans. Apart from the limited information contained in previous scholarly literature, which, on the basis of his first commentary alone, repeatedly presents this commentator as one of the first people to have produced a “scientific interpretation of the Qurʾān”, little is known about his personal and professional background and the production of his commentaries. This study also sheds light on exegetical and intellectual directions produced outside Egypt in the 19th century.

Takıyyüddin Râsıd (ö. 993/1585), Osmanlı riyâzî ilimler geleneğinin en önemli temsilcilerinden biridir. Günümüze ulaşan eserlerinden araştırmalarını astronomi, astronomi aletleri, matematik, optik, mekanik ve fizik konularında yoğunlaştırdığı anlaşılır. Osmanlı'nın tek rasathanesi olan İstanbul Rasathanesi'ni kurması ve yönetmesi, Râsıd'ı birçok yönden önemli bir figür haline getirmiştir. Ancak mezkûr öneme rağmen onun öğrendiği, öğrettiği, ürettiği ve kullandığı matematik çok az sayıda araştırmaya konu olmuştur. Halbuki yapılan bir işin veya üretilen bir eserin niteliğini ve seviyesini belirlemenin önde gelen yolu, nasıl bir "alet" ile meydana getirildiğine bakmaktır. Dolayısıyla bu makalede, riyâzî ilimlerde tebarüz etmiş bilginlerin ilmî karakteri ve kariyerini ortaya koymanın, matematik eserlerinin tahlilinden geçtiği tezinden yola çıkılarak Takıyyüddin Râsıd 'ın cebir risalesinin editio princeps, tercüme ve değerlendirmesi sunulacaktır. The phenomenon of ‘materialism’ in the late Ottoman Empire has long been explained as the vehicle of fully-fledged modernization (i.e., Westernization and secularization) in allegedly essential opposition to tradition and religion. Amid growing intellectual interest in aspects of the individual such as mind, soul, brain, and emotions in the late Ottoman period, this paper shifts the explanatory focus from religious vs. nationalist ideologies to the discourse of ‘productivity’. It argues that before the discourse of national homogenization came to dominate intellectual writings in the late Ottoman Empire, a new language about the regulation of body and emotion was formulated with the aim of increasing labour productivity and rational conduct. The debate between materialism and spiritualism was embedded in this new language. The first section of the paper reviews relevant secondary literature to question what we know about the phenomenon of Ottoman materialism. The second moves on to the over-abundance of machine metaphors in materialist writings with particular focus on Abdullah Cevdet’s books on brain physiology, and in light of the spread of mechanistic views of human nature in the late nineteenth century. The final section presents Baha Tevfik’s problematization of sensibility (hassasiyet) as an obstacle to greater social harmony based on rational conduct as a case study of the regulation of emotion in the early 1910s, when interest in scientific and philosophical literature on human nature and the soul reached its zenith. This paper shows the ways in which Ottoman materialism became an important tool to imagine the individual as a unit of production, whose soul was rendered idle and whose emotions were subjected to regulation.

Every culture has its own “world of knowledge”, a way in which it conceives the limits of human knowledge: what one knows, what one can know, and what one cannot know. This study seeks to explore the Ottoman “world of knowledge” and its historical development: the way the horizons of this mental universe were delineated in space and time; the way these horizons expanded (or contracted) over time; the way this universe was seen as having limits, showing fields that could not (or should not) be known and how these limits shifted to and fro in the continuum of reality; and, finally, the way knowledge was organized, i.e. taxonomies of the fields of science, demonstrating hierarchies of the world in relation to what was deemed necessary, useful, or harmful to man.

This is a brief study on why the core of Ottoman modernization was in the navy, why and how Ottoman naval power stood out a little more than land power, and the origins of this situation in the Turkish military tradition to date. It is planned to be expanded by further working on it in the future.

"I am a Turkish student of [the] History of Science and have been working on the subject within the last six years for the preparation of a History of Science [book] in Turkish."
So wrote Adnan Adıvar (1882–1955), the first minister of health of the Turkish Republic, to George Sarton in 1932. After explaining his interest in the discipline and admiration for Sarton’s work, Adıvar told Sarton about Salih Zeki, an Ottoman historian of science who wrote primarily on the history of mathematics, asking Sarton to accept two volumes of Zeki’s work as a gift. In response, Sarton asked Adıvar to write an article on Salih Zeki’s work for Isis. This marked the beginning of a new friendship which would last more than three decades. Impressed by Sarton’s friendship, Adıvar described his visit to Sarton at Cambridge, Massachusetts as a ‘pilgrimage’. Indeed, this is not the only example of Sarton inspiring a Turkish historian of science. In 1942, Aydın Sayılı became the first student to obtain a PhD degree in history of science from Harvard University under George Sarton’s supervision.
