The Ukrainian sacred culture and especially its wooden
churches tradition is an outstanding European phenomenon which has been formed on complex intercultural basis. Being placed between eastern and western Christian brunches, Ukrainian culture has assimilated characters of both Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox
influence. On the other hand being located in the middle
of European area it occurred in the middle of multicultural interrelations, in the very center of European cultural traditions crossroad. The folk wooden architecture of Ukraine was developed in the context of Eastern Slavic traditions.
European architecture has also made its great impact on the Ukrainian culture. IX-XII century is connected with the time of architectural forms and constructions general unity development. In XVI-XVIII century the national specific features of Ukrainian wooden architecture was  intensively developed. That is why its features were manifested in Ukrainian distinguish of style.

The Byzantine art is based upon the Christological dogma. The artistic representations of Christ and saints is justified by the fact of incarnation. Since God became visible in Christ, it is possible to represent the God’s Son in the venerable images. However, such a strong connection between the legitimacy of the icon and the Christological doctrine raises the question whether it is possible to express other particular dogmatic contents by means of that art and aesthetics.
The present article attempts to read integrally the Trinitarian truth as represented in the Andrei Rublev icon “The Trinity”. Yet, such integral reading requires not only to read the content displayed in the icon, but also to analyse if the internal dynamism of the aesthetic expression of the divine truth, besides its Christological justification, has a Trinitarian reason as well.

Patrząc na współczesną historiografię franciszkańską można odnieść wrażenie, że składają się na nią przede wszystkim pisma świętego Franciszka i świętej Klary, biografie, kroniki czy dokumenty Stolicy Apostolskiej. Niniejsza publikacja przypomina, że równoprawnym źródłem historycznym przedstawiającym życie i duchowość Świętego z Asyżu są świadectwa ikonograficzne. Ich szczególnym przykładem jest tablicowa nastawa ołtarzowa z kaplicy Bardich w kościele Świętego Krzyża we Florencji. Studium daje nie tylko szczegółowy opis tego dzieła, ale także wnika w głąb jego poszczególnych elementów, analizując kolejne sceny w konfrontacji ze źródłami pisanymi. Malarskie ujęcie postaci świętego Franciszka odkrywa subtelności, których tekst literacki nie jest w stanie przekazać w pełni.

Książka jest poświęcona wnętrzu kościoła św. Andrzeja Boboli w Lublinie, ukazującym fundamentalną dla Chrześcijan prawdę o Przymierzu Boga z Człowiekiem. Historia ta opowiedziana jest przy użyciu oryginalnego języka sztuki współczesnej. Dzieło, w przeważającej mierze stworzone przez Dobrosława Bagińskiego pozwala odkryć wyjątkowość miejsca, którą człowiek wierzący utożsamia ze świętością. Artysta zbudował przekaz ideowy w oparciu o typologię biblijną, uwzględniając najstarsze, często zapomniane, kody symboliki chrześcijańskiej. Nowoczesna plastyka wnętrza odsłania opowieść osnutą wokół przemyślanej wizji teologicznej, tworzącą spójny program ikonograficzny. Autorka książki rozpatruje plastykę świątyni w kontekście literatury patrystycznej i średniowiecznej. Zestawia wypowiedzi Dobrosława Bagińskiego z interpretacjami teologicznymi wieków minionych. Ukazuje poszukiwania twórcze artysty w obszarze sztuki sakralnej, przedstawiając jego inne wcześniejsze realizacje. Pozwoliły one wykrystalizować myśl na temat roli artysty w przekazie wiary.

„Miejsce” rozumiemy jako wolną przestrzeń, którą można zająć lub zapełnić – staje się ono wówczas np. terenem naszego zamieszkania, zatrudnienia czy naszej aktywności. „Miejsce” wyznacza nasze „tu”, któremu często towarzyszy „teraz”. Jak bowiem pisał Karl Schlögel „historia rozgrywa się nie tylko w czasie, ale i w przestrzeni. (...) Każde z wydarzeń ma swoje właściwe miejsce, w którym się odbywa. Każda z historii ma swoją scenerię, arenę”. Ponadto każda historia ma swoich uczestników, którzy zajmują w niej swoje „miejsce”.
Tak właśnie rozumiana może być zawartość niniejszego zbioru, znajdują
się w nim bowiem teksty odnoszące się bezpośrednio do przestrzeni materialnej Szczecina, powstałej w określonym czasie i towarzyszącej określonym wydarzeniom, jak i artykuły opisujące „miejsca” konkretnych grup, które zajęły/zapełniły je w mieście.

The presented paper focuses on comprehending the symbolism, variety and scale of the eagle’s image implementation in art and broadly named culture of ancient Rome of the Augustan age (ca. 27 B.C.-14 A.D.). Both literary, numismatical, as well as gemmoglyptical evidence are examined, in our attempt to better understand the ideological notion of the fawn bird’s image in the ancient times.

For the first time not only a precisely dated work of a great ancient Russian icon-painter Andrey Rublev but also a miniature of doubtless Rublev’s work is introduced into science. It is really providential that a scientific discovery fell on the 575th year from the death of a reverend icon painter, who departed in God on October 17, 1428.

This article is a general introduction to prophetic representation in both Christian and Islamic religions through art and visuals from the ancient until current day. The following questions are examined specifically: Which prophets have been depicted either through cultural or artistic representations in both religions? To which cultural or historical environment do the representations belong? The nature of the representations produced in various periods and contexts will also be investigated.

Mária Terézia na uhorskom sneme v Pressburgu (11. septembra 1741) je jedným zo zobrazení  historickej udalosti, zo života Márie Terézie popretkávanej s legendami a mýtmi. Tento námet bol najmä v 19. storočí veľmi obľúbený. V súvislosti s rakúsko-uhorským vyrovnaním a najmä so vznikom Rakúsko-uhorska sa posúva do novej interpretačne roviny. I keď tento typ zobrazenia vzniká v grafických zobrazeniach už v 18. storočí, z alegorickej roviny sa posúva do konkrétneho romantického zobrazenia mladej uhorskej kráľovnej, ktorá predstúpila v trónnej sieni Bratislavského hradu pred zástupcov uhorských miest. Oblečená v čiernych, smútočných šatách držala podľa legendy na rukách svojho malého, polročného syna Jozefa, ktorého vo vhodných chvíľach štipla do nohy, aby jeho plačom vzbudila súcit. Či to bola rozhodnosť, šarm alebo súcit, dnes nevieme, môžeme sa iba romanticky domnievať, že stavy dojala tak, že tasili šable a volali: „Moriamur pro rege nostro, Maria Theresia!“ alebo „Vitam et sanguinem“.
Galéria mesta Bratislavy, má vo svojich zbierkach kolekciu 11 grafických listov s týmto námetom. Rozličné techniky, formáty, kompozície, nám v porovnaní vytvoria plnohodnotnú kolekciu s obrazmi kráľovnej, bojovníčky. Od najstarších medirytín Johanna Ernsta Mansfelda (1739-1796) v porovnaní s akvatintou Lorenza Neumayera (1796-1845) podľa R. Scheina ? dochádza k posunu výpravnosti scény s kompozične obdobnými dielami Karla Landadellyho (1815-1865) a Josepha Hasslwandera (1812-1878). Mária Terézia ako kráľovná bojujúca za záchranu rakúskeho dedičstva obklopená uhorskými kurucmi s vytasenými šabľami vytvára kontrast, ktorý zdôrazňuje ženu, matku, bojovníčku za svoj ľud, za svoje dedičstvo.

The article is devoted to the attribution of the tablet icon “Theophany — The Synaxis of John the Baptist” (22.7 × 19.1) from the Museum of the Russian Icon. It has undergone a comprehensive study at the State Research Institute for Restoration, which revealed some features of artistic execution, the degree of intermittent interventions, and the painting technique. The unique iconography of the tablet which combines the feasts dedicated to John the Baptist, allows us to talk about a significant series of icon calendars, thus reflecting the formation process of the iconography of the Synaxis of John the Baptist (January 7) in Russia. By its specific technique of execution, artistic style and iconography the icon can be connected with the Pskov art of the 1540s.

Współcześnie w literaturze teologicznej często mówi się o „sakramentalności” ikony. Określenie to nie świadczy o traktowaniu sztuki ikonicznej na równi z siedmioma kanonicznymi sakramentami, ale sugeruje, że ten szczególny rodzaj sztuki posiada właściwość uobecniania w swojej przestrzeni rzeczywistości Boskiej. Sposób partycypacji pierwiastka nadprzyrodzonego nie ma jednak tak radykalnego, jak np. w Eucharystii lub innych sakramentach, charakteru substancjalnego.
Domeną sztuki ikonicznej, jak każdej innej, jest forma, zatem należy spodziewać się, że w aspekcie formalnym (estetycznym) znajdują się elementy świadczące o jej sakramentalności. Ponadto w ikonie sfera formalna mocno jest zestrojona z samą treścią wskazaną przez ikonę, zatem również teologia, jaką przywołuje ikona, poprzez sakramentalny charakter formy, powinna odznaczać się pewnego rodzaju otwartością na transcendencję.

The content of the article is a description of the sphragistic system of the duke and bishop Wenceslaus II (1348– 1419) from the Legnica-Brzeg line of Silesian Piasts, especially from the point of view of the iconography and clerical work. All the known duke´s seals were used during the research, those dating back to the reign in Duchy of Legnica and also those dating back to a period of advocating the office of a bishop of Lubusz (1378–1382) and Wroclaw (1382–1417)

Обимност и вишеслојност грађе која се односи на хришћанске рукотворене иконе као и проблематику која проистиче из вишезначности и сложености феномена иконо-поштовања  свакако није могуће детаљно приказати унутар простора једног семинарског рада. Зато, текст који је пред вама треба првенствено тумачити и разумети као покушај да се учини тек један основни, информативни, скицуозни али обједињен и систематичан приказ општег разматрања о феномену иконо-поштовања у периоду ране цркве. Жеља аутора је да свима онима који се за ову тему интересују а нарочито ученицима и студентима чија област студија потребује систематичну и објективну обавештеност о историји Хришћанства, хришћанској духовности, богословљу, култури, уметности и иконографији овај текст пружи основне и корисне информације о иконопоштовању сабране на једном месту и уређене у целину коју је релативно лако испратити. Намера аутора је такође да ово разматрање изгради користећи се пре свега културолошким приступом проблематици, независно од могућности које пружа класичан историографско-аналитички приступ, или пак јасно дефинисано и заокружено, стриктно теолошко-догматичко тумачење феномена поштовања рукотворене иконе. То истовремено не значи да су историјски и теолошки приступ одбачени или занемарени, напротив, они су коришћени као важни оријентири и путокази приликом развијања излагања. У хронолошком погледу, разматрање ће бити ограничено и усредсређено на историјски период  „Ране Цркве“ односно период од  тренутка установљења Цркве ,  па до времена одржавања Седмог васељенског сабора (787.г.не.) са нагласком на период пре формалног почетка иконокластичких сукоба и спорова (крај 7. и почетак 8.ВНЕ).

Avrupa’da cadılık temalı eserlerin en yoğun üretilmiş olduğu 15.-17. yüzyılın sonrasında yaşamış Francisco Goya’nın (1746-1828) cadılık temalı eserleri, hem kişisel hayatı, hem de içinde bulunduğu coğrafyanın şartları bağlamında incelendiğinde dikkate değer ikonografik farklılıklar içermektedir. Çalışmamız Avrupa’da cadı kimliğinin oluşturulmasında önemli rol oynayan bazı tarihi olayları kısaca ele alarak Goyan’ın üretmiş olduğu cadı temalı eserlerinin önemli kısmının ikonografik çözümlemesini amaçlamaktadır. İspanya’da cadı kimliğine karşı ısrarlı şekilde devam eden tutucu tavır karşısında ressamın kişisel görüşlerinin eserlerinin ikonografisindeki etkisi, Malleus Maleficarum gibi cadı literatüründen kitaplar ve Goya’nın kişisel yaşamında iz bırakan etkileşimler üzerinden çözümlenecektir.

Kandinsky was the first known and recorded European artist to create fully abstract artworks. The religious aspects in his understanding of art have long been highlighted, although thise have often remained from the theoretical viewpoint vague and indeterminate. The article shows that many of Kandinsky’s theoretical foundations can be illuminated in the light of the standards of Russian icon painting. The outlook discusses instead the conditions under which contemporary abstract art can be interpreted religiously.

The article aims to present the issues concentrated on early medieval iconography of the four elements being an integral part of the scene of the Last Judgment. The selected problem was shown basing on the representation from the western wall of the Basilica of the Assumption of the Mary on the island of Torcello (Italy). The author poses a question about the possible occurrence and symbolic significance of the four elements in the abovementioned mosaic, comparing it with other representations of the Last Judgment from the same and the earlier period. Basing on a thorough iconographic analysis of the representation present in her earlier publications and the doctoral dissertation, the author presents a new interpretation hypothesis outlined by the presence of the iconography of the four elements as a symbol of the original act of creation in the Last Judgment.

The aim of this study was to examine the seal of Legnica and Brzeg princes in terms of their symbolic contents. The princes, like the remaining estates, used seals not only because of their professional functions, but also for propaganda purposes. They created their self- image by using these media. This was possible thanks to the presented images, through which they could promote their desired content. They hovered mostly around the ruler and his power, expressing its scope in particular.
The study analyzed the seals  of Legnica and Brzeg Piasts with regard to separated as a result of territorial divisions,  Lubin-Oławska line. The study covered both sigilla of the rulers, as well as princes without their own districts, but derived from the analyzed line. The group also included monuments of  the clergy. Apart from them, the subject of studies has also included princesses' seals, which possessed them because of regency governments  on behalf of minors descendants, holding high offices or ecclesiastical management of various goods. Chronological framework determines the oldest preserved seal belonging to Boleslaw Rogatka, confirmed in use in the years 1242-1245, and the death of the last reigning ruler of the discussed princely lines in 1675. i.e. Jerzy Wilhelm.
The study consists of two parts: the analytical part and catalogue of seal. The narrative part  consists of five chapters. The first one discusses the history of the principality of Legnica and Brzeg during its existence, i.e. from the thirteenth to seventeenth century. Three stages were distinguished for the presentation: the first - the creation of that territory and incorporating it into the Czech crown, the second - a period of territorial transformation in the times of Luxembourg, Podiebradzkis and Jagiellonians , the third - the reign of the Habsburg until 1675. In the second chapter presented different views on the understanding by the researchers of art history and semiotics definition of the symbol. This framework also presents typologies of ideas of seals of princes known from the literature. In the next chapter, by analyzing individual groups of seals (horse riding, hiking, busting, zoomorphic), tries to show the different facets of the princely rule and stemming from the application of each composition, seal symbolic meaning. The princes, in addition to having temporal power sometimes held ecclesiastical offices. Therefore, the fourth part of the considerations is devoted imagini potestatis on throne, busting and coats of arms sigilla of of princes-the clergy. The last chapter deals with the subject of analysis of heraldic ideas found in sigillography of Legnica and Brzeg princes and princesses. The second part of the work is a catalog of the seals, with 193 of their types. Many of them, particularly those coming from the modern period, have a high educational value, because they were not yet known in the literature.

Bardzo obszerna praca mgr Olgi Kucharczyk (w sumie 1104 str.) podzielona została na dwie zasadnicze części narracyjne, dopełnione omówieniem typologii zgromadzonego materiału ikonograficznego, jego systematycznym zestawieniem i omówieniem w Katalogu, wykazem skrótów i bibliografią (na przeszło stu stronach: cz. III, s. 543-651), aneksami (tu publikacja wybranych przekazów źródłowych, analiza niektórych zabytków i obrazowo-statystyczne zestawienia na wykresach poszczególnych typów przedstawień), wreszcie albumem z ilustracjami (w sumie 386 ilustracji).
