Anotace: Cieľom štúdie je kvalitatívne preskúmať podmienky spolupráce školy a rómskej rodiny zo sociálne znevýhodneného prostredia v procese školskej integrácie žiaka. Autori na základe kvalitatívnej analýzy pološtruktúrovaných interview s učiteľmi, ktorí pracujú s rómskymi žiakmi so špeciálnymi výchovno-vzdelávacími potrebami, poskytujú prehľad faktorov ovplyvňujúcich kvalitu spolupráce školy a rómskej rodiny. Z výsledkov vyplýva, že kvalita spolupráce je ovplyvnená najednej strane špecifikami komunity a konkrétnej rómskej rodiny, na druhej strane osobnostnými a odbornými predpokladmi učiteľova ostatných odborníkov, ktorí by sa mali podieľať na zabezpečovaní podmienok školskej integrácie týchto žiakov. V závere autori navrhujú odporúčania smerujúce k podpore spolupráce rómskej rodiny a školy.

This article presents and analyses the artistic work of a
group of Czech and Slovak Romani artists called Romane
Kale Panthera. Using an example of appropriating a classic
work by famous Czech artist Josef Lada, Romane Kale
Panthera show the problematic issue of verbal and visual
testimonies and the changeability of their effects in the
social environment. The focus of this article is the illustrated
story of the talking tomcat, which is considered an icon
by many generations of Czech children, the meaning of
which, however, is the exact opposite for children from the
Romani minority. We explain how, as a result of changes
to the original text of the fairy tale and to the visual signs
in this classic illustration, the contexts of the work, the
position of its user and its performative effects change as
well. In conclusion, the text reflects the function of language
and the circumstances in which a change in thinking and
behaviour occurs in relation to the ‘other’.

Previous research into the religious life of Roma in Serbia has mostly been based on questionnaires and surveys of sociologists of religion on their religious (current connection to religion and church) and confessional (belonging to a religion) self-identification, on the ritual celebration of two religious-ethnic holidays: Vlasuljica (January 14, St. Basil) and Đurđevdan (May 6, St. George), on the relationship between the religious majority and the Romani religious minority and religious discrimination against Roma, as well as on the influence of ethnic-religious factors on the social distance towards the Romani people. Researchers have not, however, engaged in more complex understanding of the Romani religious culture and nuanced systematization of the manner in which believers interpret their own religious experience in the context of their natural surroundings. One of the many stereotypes included in the generally negativeoccasionally Romanticrepresentations and discourses that have burdened the Romani people is the alleged existence of a natural link between the 'Gypsy' way of life and anarchism. This article studies the extent of an actual historical relationship between anarchism as a political worldview and the 'Gypsy'-Roma ethnic status beyond reductionist stereotypes. It investigates, on the one hand, the agency of Romani subjects in the labour movement and anarchism by means of a case study of Spain in the interwar years, and, on the other, it examines the cases of a number of European emigrants who chose to closely link anarchism as a political option to a Romani identity in their struggle against capitalism and fascism. Both sets of case studies are used to reflect on the political nature of racial-ethnic identity constructions, to question the dilemmas of cultural appropriation and to propose a dense analysis that reveals the historicity of identities of this type.

According to the other strategy, Romanies create a national minority in the majority society. It should be supported so that the members of the community could preserve their national characteristics and exercise their minority rights. Roma children in Slovakia experience insurmountable barriers in their education and are therefore unable to achieve same results as their majority-population counterparts. This structural inequality lowers their chances on overcoming generational poverty and reaching social and material satisfaction in society. Through the eyes of key informants – teachers – this dissertation explores how state education policies translate into every-day practices and whether they have a chance to initiate social change. Aim of this dissertation is to contribute to academic and policymaking debate by providing experience-based sociological analysis of Slovak Roma education, that will improve Slovak education practices. Qualitative interviews with key actors provide insight into specific issues such as teaching flexibility, staff (un)preparedness, pupils’ underprivileged background and specific policies on school structure, curriculum, pre-school education or grade repetition. Analytical findings suggest bigger flexibility and independence from the rigid education structure is needed for teachers to work with specific needs and expectations of each pupil. Such flexibility would result in amending the curriculum, preventing grade repetition or changing funding models. Some positive policy trends were highlighted (such as introduction of ‘cycles’), others were questioned (like ‘zero grade’ cancellation and mandatory pre-school attendance). For effective and long-term change Slovak society should deploy patterns of effective communication between practitioners and communication with state, interpersonal and inter-institutional trust and long-term vision.

We have developed tools and applied methods for automated identification of potential news from textual data for an automated news search system called Software Newsroom. The purpose of the tools is to analyze data collected from the internet and to identify information that has a high probability of containing new information. The identified information is summarized in order to help understanding the semantic contents of the data, and to assist the news editing process. It has been demonstrated that words with a certain set of syntactic and semantic properties are effective when building topic models for English. We demonstrate that words with the same properties in Finnish are useful as well. Extracting such words requires knowledge about the special characteristics of the Finnish language, which are taken into account in our analysis. Analysing a corpus of articles published in national and nationalistic newspapers in Bulgaria and the UK, this paper looks, from a comparative perspective, at the linguistic techniques for the development and presentation of the identities of ethnic groups other than white Bulgarians in Bulgaria and white British in the UK.

This paper presents the results of the study of main features and current state of social protection of people with dementia in Hungary. At present, the population of Hungary is rapidly aging and is decreasing quantitatively. Social and demographic changes as well as the increase of life expectancy affect the provision of social services for the population of Hungary. The aim of the paper is to provide an overview of social services delivered to persons with dimentia in Hungary. Now, he is seen as almost identical with those tobacco workers, a circle, whose presence itself proves how remarkable the history experienced by the diverse ethnicities of Salonica province was, in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. High labour demand attracted masses to the tobacco production centres such as Drama, Kavala, Xanthi, Serres. Roma were among them, and the long-lasting wage-employment in tobacco agriculture and warehouses blurred the boundaries between them and non-Gypsies and gradually became hybrid agglomerations. They joined labour activism and early leftist movements and internalised relevant sensibilities and dispositions as a part of their culture. Between the Balkan Wars of 1912–13 and Turk-Greek Population Exchange of 1923–24, they brought that into Turkey and reproduced and spread in tobacco warehouses or fields. They fed the Turkish left with new human resources and their logistic contributions to early Republican leftist political organisations.

The only Romani newspaper of interwar Yugoslavia, Romano lil/Ciganske novine (the latter meaning 'Gypsy newspaper' in Serbian), was published in Belgrade in 1935 comprising only three monthly issues. The most prominent Yugoslav Romani activist of the time, Svetozar Simić, was the editor of the newspaper, giving tribute to his visions of what Roma should do for the prosperity of their own community. In terms of content, the newspaper articles seem to be strategically thought-out with the aim of creating a narrative about the Roma, as people united by common culture and historical memory, equal to the other people of the Yugoslav Kingdom, who needed to be included in all processes of the social and public sphere. This article looks into the essence of some messages that the newspaper conveys regarding Roma's social inclusion, such as (1) education and professional training as a key for a better future, (2) the need for Roma to be more engaged and to self-organise as a community and (3) the fight against majority misconceptions about the Gypsies. The article presents and analyses these three elements of Svetozar Simić's visions for Romani social inclusion as presented in his editorial pieces. The analysis also pays attention to the resemblances between some of the main messages of the Romani activism in the interwar period and the activism for Roma inclusion in later periods, including parallels during the time of Yugoslav Socialism and the period of democratic transition up until today.

Ileana D. Chirila is an Assistant Professor of French and Francophone Studies at the University of New Hampshire. She specializes in transcultural literatures in French, with a special focus on Sino-French literature and Romani literature in French. Her research extends to disciplines such as extreme contemporary literature, cultural studies, cosmopolitanism, multiculturalism, cultural theory, and migrant studies. She has published and has forthcoming volume chapters and articles in journals such as Contemporary French and Francophone Studies, Critical Romani Studies, La Francophonie en Asie-Pacifique.

The news above again points to the participation of Gypsies in the communist movement. At the same time, it exemplifies how the press combined the popular prejudices against ‘Gypsies’ and the fear and distrust against communists to discredit the leftist movements of the era. In the first passage, the anonymous author declares that the offenders hired some people to distribute the leaflets. Although it is uncertain who hired whom here, the author clarifies its argument in the subsequent passage. There were some Çingeneler (Gypsies) among the accused ones, and they were assigned to do the tasks mentioned above. It is not too difficult for the reader to combine the connotations of passages and extract the possible implication behind the text: Gypsies are not reliable to be dedicated activists of any movement and, therefore, they can only be the ordinary labourers who are hired by the evil communists behind the scene.

This essay proposes that the invisibility of so-called Gypsies in Middle Eastern and Central Asian historiography derives from two linked phenomena. First, the work of nineteenth- and twentieth-century European and North American philologists, medievalists, and ethnographers delegitimized the languages of the “Strangers,” along with the cultures and histories that these languages expressed. The erasure of Strangers from modern historiography was nearly total. Second, the category of Strangers was transformed in the wake of the Holocaust as Roma activists drew on Nazi racial categories to base Roma identity on linguistic criteria.

The introduction to the special issue discusses epistemological and methodological questions with regard to
ethnographic approaches in archival research. Inspired by anthropological debate on the ethnographic approach
to and with colonial archives, the authors tackle the question of Roma and Sinti’s presence in European
archives. They display how a methodological and theoretical de-construction of the archive allows shedding
light on marginalized and often silenced voices within Europe’s history. It is shown how the reduction
of the history of the presence of the «Gypsies» in Europe to a succession of repressive acts and negative topos
means, in fact, not taking into account the capacity for civilisation on the part of the Romanì people, their
being part of contexts that are not only, and not always, marginal. It introduces into how the archival material
that contains the category of «Gypsy» unfolds and develops when it is approached through an ethnographic
lens. Opening up for the specific combination of European archival sources, and Romanì ethnographies
with their inherently diverging understandings of time and history, the authors propose a twofold approach
on how to engage with the archival sources: by ethnographically denaturalizing the archive and by basing its
research on present ethnographic experiences with Romani people.

В Республике Саха (Якутия) как субъекте Российской Федерации языковая политика является составной частью государственной политики и направлена на развитие и взаимодействие языков во всех сферах жизни общества. В целях выработки концептуальных подходов к сохранению, изучению и развитию родных языков и культур в течение последних лет в республике проводится ряд крупномасштабных всероссийских, международных мероприятий с участием Бюро ЮНЕСКО в Москве, Совета Европы, федеральных министерств и ведомств. Все эти инициативы способствуют соизучению языков и культур: якутского, русского, языков коренных народов, включая языки малочисленных народов Арктики и Северных регионов Якутии, а также иностранных языков, обеспечивающих возможность международного общения и межкультурной коммуникации. Создание научно обоснованных государственных программ изучения государственных и официальных языков в республике, явилось прямым руководством к действию по реализации задач языковой политики в республике.

Cette contribution est issue d’une enquête ethnographique portant sur l’activité d’une unité mobile de santé publique mise en place spécifiquement dans les « campi rom » (camps roms) de Rome. A partir d’observations de consultations médicales, elle analyse les relations entre les représentants des institutions et la population rom. Observer ce qui se passe lors des activités de soin permet de relever la dimension étatique de la vie quotidienne dans un contexte de précarité extrême, ainsi que la justice sociale qui s’y exprime. Le sentiment moral qui traverse de façon constante et réciproque ces interactions estla méfiance. Cet article se concentre sur les différents usages de ce sentiment, de la part des Roms et du personnel médical, et sur ses effets sur les enjeux de santé et de contrôle dans les « campi rom » de la capitale italienne.
