Summary: - The article presents the critical edition of some 13th-14th cent. Latin sermons on St Clare of Assisi. Excepting three of which the authors are known - the famous Franciscan preachers Conrad Holtnicker, Berthold of Regensburg and Bertrand de La Tour – all the others are of anonymous origin; they go back mainly to the MSS of the Sacro Convento of Assisi, or forming part of the so-called Collectiones Fratrum Minorum. Here an analysis is made of the structure of these sermons, the choice of biblical themes, and the use of hagiographical sources in them.

Ad un’analisi attenta degli scritti di Chiara e Francesco di Assisi, si coglie che mentre la prima menziona spesso il secondo, egli non fa altrettanto. Tale disparità non è solo dovuta al fatto che la nobile figlia di Favarone di Ofreduccio di Bernardino è sopravvissuta al figlio del mercante arricchito Pietro di Bernardone, ma anche che per un tempo ben superiore agli anni che ebbe modo di relazionarsi con lui vivente ella ha celebrato la solennità del Padre Serafico per ben venticinque anni, con tutta la forza performativa della liturgia.

Tommaso da Celano, agiografo di Francesco d’Assisi, si ritrova, negli anni Cinquanta del Duecento, nuovamente chiamato dal papa a scrivere la vita di una grande santa del suo tempo: stessa ritrosia, stessa umile affermazione di incapacità, stesso metodo di lavoro. Attingendo alle testimonianze scritte durante il processo di canonizzazione e a quelle orali raccolte di prima mano, tratteggia l’itinerario di Chiara: le eccezionali virtù, luminose fin dall’infanzia, la radicalità della sua scelta, il percorso spirituale, che si manifesta attraverso l’esercizio ascetico di bontà, umiltà, povertà, carità e preghiera – subito preso a modello dalle prime sorelle – e si radica inscindibilmente nella croce di Cristo, nella contemplazione continua della sua Passione. La narrazione dei miracoli e l’attenzione per la rilevanza ecclesiale e sociale del suo operato, fino alla venerazione popolare, intessono e arricchiscono il quadro: da Gesù viene la vocazione, dalla sua Passione il modello di vita, dall’intimità con lui, nella preghiera incessante, la grazia che, attraverso una giovane donna, opera visibilmente nella Chiesa

Sequela Christi and Imitatio Christi in the works of Clare of Assisi. – The Clare of Assisi’s works show the presence of the themes of Sequela and Imitatio. Clare was one of the most authentic and radical Francis’s baton and the analysis of her lexical choice describes this peculiarity. In spite of the fact that in her works the lexicon of Imitatio appears more frequently, she aims to give prominence to the theme of sequela – a theme dear to Francis, who in his writings has expressed his personal relationship to Christ by exclusively using the semantic family of sequi. All her works (Epistolae ad Agnetem, Forma vitae sororum pauperum, Testamnetum and Benedictio) are connected by the natural relationship with sancta paupertas. The way of Francis’s and his mates’ life, deeply connected with evangelical Christ’s human experience, is the single framework by which Clare can interpretate her own franciscan route. Clara’s way to live franciscan message makes possible the vanishing of the Imitatio into the Sequela.

L’articolo “Le parafrasi e le figure bibliche collegate alla metafora della luce presenti nella “Bolla di canonizazzione «Clara claris praeclara»” tratta della lettera di canonizzazione di Chiara d’Assisi. Nel capitolo primo sono state descritte le circostanze della redazione del documento, poi l'interesse si è focalizzato sullo stile e la struttura della bolla. Nel capitolo terzo, il principale, sono state rappresentate le parafrasi e riferimenti biblici correlati alla metafora della luce.

Il presente lavoro ha l’obiettivo di analizzare due tele conservate nella chiesa di Santa Chiara a Montelupone (Macerata), chiusa al pubblico in seguito al terremoto del 2016. Si tratta di una copia dell’Annunciazione di Federico Barocci già nella cappella dei duchi di Urbino del santuario di Loreto, per la quale si  è cercato di capire il rapporto con le altre copie o derivazioni della bottega del pittore di Urbino, e della pala dell'altare maggiore della chiesa, raffigurante una Madonna con Bambino e santi attribuita al pittore messinese Onofrio Gabrieli per via della firma: in questo caso il dipinto è stato inserito nel percorso del maestro siciliano, figura dalla carriera itinerante, di cui la tela marchigiana costituisce un ennesimo tassello.

Con questo presente lavoro cercherò di ripercorrere gli eventi significativi nei primi mesi della conversione di Chiara e di vedere in essi una dialettica continua tra il carisma che vuole esprimersi, la vita vissuta che le è da maestra e la istituzione che ne garantisce la vita. Si supera, perciò, il risentimento tra carisma e istituzione, pur non escludendo incomprensioni tra di esse.

This paper reports the results of the integrated geophysical surveys performed inside the Monastery of St Chiara in Nardó in southern Italy. Ground-penetrating radar (GPR) and electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) investigations were carried out to find the tomb of Sister Chiara D'Amato, whose location has been lost over the centuries. Sister Chiara Isabella D'Amato was a charismatic and holy figure. She died in 1693. She was buried inside the monastery but her body has never been found. The data acquisition was performed along with a series of closely spaced lines for GPR and using a non-standard array for ERT. Data were processed and visualised as two-dimensional vertical sections and depth slices or three-dimensional volumes (GPR and ERT) to allow an integrated interpretation of the geophysical results. The analysis of the geophysical data sets revealed a series of anomalies that could be ascribed possible archaeological structures, probably related to the earliest ages of the sacred building as well as other anomalies (bedrock, fractures) of presumable natural origin. In particular, one geophysical anomaly was suspected of being connected to burial and consequently further investigated with the use of a video endoscope. The results reveal the presence of a void but it has not yet been clarified whether it is the burial of Sister Chiara or not as it is awaiting the excavation.

The present contribution concerning the XVIth century “Sicilian drawn
thread work” which is preserved in the Franciscan Museum housed in the Capuchin Historical Institute in Rome, aims to circumscribe both the possible dating and geographical provenance of the artifact – through the historical-vestimentary and iconographic investigation of the artifact by specialist Elisabetta Gnignera enclosed in the first part – and to illustrate the results of its integrated restoration (in the second part). In fact, the recent restoration of
the artifact, benefited from the interdisciplinary collaboration between restorers: Nicoletta Vicenzi, Silvia Felli, Luisa Mocci and diagnostic expert in cultural heritage Andrea Macchia.
This multidisciplinary approach, adopted during the study activities, the restoration and conservation of the artifact, has made it possible to acquire new and significant elements of a historical-artistic and technical nature. These factors that are extensively illustrated in this
contribution, help to redefine the dating and provenance milieu of this precious artefact “a
tela sfilata” (drawn thread work).

Once belonging to the (suppressed) Monastero di Santa Chiara of San Gimignano, but today conserved
in the Museo di Arte Sacra of that city, is a reliquary cross, decorated with silver leaf and embellished with
figures of translucent enamel, that was produced in Siena in the last quarter of the Trecento. Although the
object offers many aspects to consider, despite numerous lacunae, it has been almost completely ignored
in studies of fourteenth-century Sienese metalwork. This essay attempts to provide a deeper understanding
of the cross, beginning with its provenance: the convent of Clarissan nuns of San Gimignano, which was the
home of such precious works as Coppo di Marcovaldo’s Crucifix and Memmo di Filipuccio’s Madonna and
Child with Saints, both in the Pinacoteca Civica. The Clarissan convent, founded in the 1260s, was in close
proximity to friars’ convent in San Gimignano, which oversaw the nuns’ spiritual care and notably was the
residence of Fra Giovanni de’ Cauli, the presumed author of the Meditationes Vitae Christi, a fundamental
text for the development of late medieval iconography. Documentary, iconographic, and stylistic analyses
of the cross are followed by a reconstruction of its function and a study of the art historical context of its
production.

Święta Klara z Asyżu nie zostawiła w swoich pismach rozważań o Uroczystości Bożego Narodzenia ani o tym, w jaki sposób dzień ten był przeżywany w jej wspólnocie (poza wzmianką w jednym z listów o rezygnacji przez siostry z postu). Opatka z San Damiano odnosiła się jednak do konkretnego wydarzenia oraz do osoby Dzieciątka i Jego Matki. Kontemplowała scenę narodzin Wielkiego Króla, przyglądając się Jego ubóstwu i pokorze oraz Maryi, która Go piastowała i dzieliła Jego wybór ubóstwa.

Gdy natomiast wsłuchamy się w świadectwa akt procesu kanonizacyjnego i w „Żywot świętej Klary”, odnajdziemy opowiadania o obecności Dzieciątka Jezus w życiu Klary. Zobaczymy, że tajemnica Wcielenia rozciągała się na wiele aspektów jej codzienności. Małe Dziecko bywało bowiem widziane przez siostry przy Klarze w czasie słuchania słowa Bożego oraz podczas Eucharystii. To właśnie głos małego Jezusa zapewnił ją, że będzie chronił wspólnotę z San Damiano oraz Asyż przed groźnymi najeźdźcami. W końcu ta żywa relacja z małym Jezusem przekładała się na opiekę Klary nad dziećmi, które podczas swego życia w San Damiano (a także po śmierci)  w cudowny sposób uzdrawiała i uwalniała od niebezpieczeństwa.

Superstiziosa, fatalista, impermeabile a qualsiasi cambiamento: era davvero così la società medievale? Studi recenti dicono di no, ribaltando luoghi comuni. Nei "secoli bui" c'era posto per i ribelli, opportunità per gli ambiziosi, sfide scientifiche per le menti più brillanti. E ancora: i 30 Tiranni che terrorizzarono Atene; Alessandro II, lo zar incompreso che sognava una Russia moderna; i mestieri più brutti dell'antichità; i bambini ebrei di Villa Emma in fuga dai nazisti.

The term "mercy" appears several times in the Writings of Saint Clare. The analysis of these occurrences makes it possible to deepen the spiritual and community experience of Clare who, using the words of the apostle Paul, likes to designate God as "the Father of mercies". This unique and daily renewed experience of the mercy of God in her vocation and that of her sisters, a daily experience of divine goodness and providence, transforms relations between the sisters and produces a style of fraternal life characterized by mercy.
