ARCHAEOLOGICAL RESEARCH IN THE MEDIEVAL SETTLEMENT FROM MIERCUREA BĂI – CUNŢA


– Abstract –


The preventive archaeological research took place during 2012. (Pl. 15-16) On the first stage cross-sectional trenches were made in order to observe the expansion of the site. They were followed by the uncovering and the research of the entire area. During this works 153 features from a medieval settlement have been identified. (Pl. 8; Pl. 10-14) Among these there were partially sunken houses of a rectangular almost square plan with rock ovens (mostly situated on the northern corners) and in some cases with domestic ovens or fireplaces; pottery kilns; pits with various purposes and some traces of surface structures. The research of these features has provided a vast amount of archaeological items, which helped in dating the settlement in the first half of the 12th century. The items consist mainly in pottery: clay cauldrons, jar-vessels, jugs and rarely also bowls. Some of them were ornamented with sets of straight or wavy lines and impressions made with the stick or the small wheel. Some of these also show on the surface of the base potter’s signs or marks. Besides these there were also bone or horn made objects (combs, pins and pin tubes), metal tools and accessories (sickles, knives, spurs, buckles, earrings) or stone devices (hand-mills for grinding cereal crops). The discovered features are described in the text with references to the associated plate / plates, which include picture / pictures and the drawing of each feature as well as drawings / pictures of the archaeological inventory. Where necessary, in terms of the size of the feature or the wealth and importance of the archaeological inventory, several plates have been assigned to one feature. For the smaller features, with no inventory or with a scarce inventory, several archaeological features were displayed on one plate.
The distribution of the features and of the archaeological material within the researched perimeter shows that the houses with rock ovens, the surface structures and pottery making installations were grouped differentially. The archaeological research did not reveal the entire settlement, which makes it difficult to refer to the entire structure of the medieval settlement from MS1. Nevertheless, it is obvious that the southern part of the settlement has been researched, which lead to the discovery of at least one clear boundary of the settlement, namely the one marked by the ancient river flow and by the marshy area around it. What seems odd on a short look over the general plan of the archaeologically researched area (Pl. 8) is the fact that a white spot is present in the center of the researched area. It is a strictly medieval white spot, because it is the area where the remains of a great roman structure have been researched, above which none or rare medieval structures were preserved. During the 12th century the great roman structure may have stood as a massive ruin, which made it impossible for medieval habitations to be placed there, the area being used only as a source of building materials. There is also the assumption that some parts of the great roman structure were still standing and in use in the 12th century, maybe reused as a public or cult edifice, generating the toponym Alba Ecclesia or Weisskirch that has been kept until the 20th century. In all the researched areas there were no data to support a systematic planning of the features, but due to the discovery of two pottery kilns (Pl. 22-23; Pl. 56) and of some wells/pits (Pl. 47; Pl. 98) used as raw material source that go all the way down to the underground water and of the eastern boundary marked by an ancient river bed (probably used as water source), one may state that on the eastern side of the archaeological research the handicraft area of the settlement has been revealed. The alternation or the association of these “production areas” with houses may lead to the conclusion that those who worked there lived nearby them, in order to be able to keep a close watch on the technological flow. Placing the ovens at the periphery of the settlement is a normal fact due to fire hazard and this fact has also been noticed in other settlements of the same age in Transylvania. The existence of several traces of pole holes, pits, ditches and fireplaces that are not associated to houses may support the idea of people living in tents or iurta alongside with living in dugged houses with stone ovens. Especially in the south-western area of the settlement there are areas with clustered materials (small stones, roman construction materials and pottery) on irregular surfaces that seem to be the result of land leveling in order to prevent mudding and rain water puddles. The same clusters situated in the proximity of sunken houses with rock ovens, could represent traces of household annexes, blinds or protective screens against bad weather.
The research data show that the settlement was left in an organized systematic manner. There are no traces of rash desertion, no houses with usable inventory left within behind. Only two houses destroyed by fire (cx 048 – Pl. 25 and 133 – Pl. 64) were researched, but the archaeological material present within at the time of the fire was not rich. It seems that those who have left the settlement have had enough time to recover all that they could use; furthermore they had time to dump the broken objects or those that were of no use or could not be carried in old source of material pits (turned into domestic pits) and to leave the habitations and the settlement clean. The analysis of the animal bones from the settlement (Pl. 112.2) proves that those who lived during the 12th century at Miercurea Băi – Cunţa were mainly cattle raisers. At the same time, the large number of spurs found in the archaeologically researched features (Pl. 46.49, Pl. 73.75 and Pl. 55), lead to the conclusion that they were a population of riders, which suits the idea of large domestic animals breeding. The presence of sickles and hand-mills in the settlement proves that the population was also concerned with soil cultivation, therefore a sedentary one or one on the way of becoming sedentary. The same conclusion is stated by the presence of pottery kilns built in a quite accurate manner.
From the historical point of view, the 12th century is marked in Transylvania by the gradual expansion of the authority of the medieval Hungarian kingdom as well as by the military organization of its territory and boundaries. The way these boundaries were organized all along the 10-12th centuries has been analyzed by several historians, mainly on account of the historical toponyms placed alongside geographic lines marked by natural defense elements. These were adjusted by maintaining thick forest strips  (Gyepük – Presăci – Indagines – Verhaue). They were doubled in front by non-inhabited areas or by areas deliberately depopulated (Terra deserta, desertum) to the effect of easily observing and watching all movement of human groups. Within these elements of fortification, highly secured passing places were arranged (Kapu – Clusa – Porta – Poartă – Tor). We believe that on the Secaş Valley, at the point where the archaeological research has been conducted, there was one of these gates in the borderline forest, attested mainly by the toponymy of the historical maps, as “Wehrbusch beim Thor” or “Alt Wehrbusch beim Thor” meaning “gate defending forest (brush)” or “old forest, old defense brush at the gate”. It is obvious that these defense lines required defenders, consisting in groups of peasants with military duties, such as defending the borders. They were mostly Szekely, population that was kept in the history of the place by its hidronymy and toponymy: Secaş, Zekesch, Zekeschdorf. The written information recounts about the use of these groups of riding archers by means of the legislation of king Ladislau (lex.II.17, i) “custodes confiniorum qui vulgo ewrii vocantur”. These groups of guardians of the border were moved in an organized manner at the middle of the 12th century in the eastern Transylvania, on the new alignment of the border of the Hungarian kingdom, while in their place, on the ancient terra deserta, the Transylvanian saxons were settled down, who placed themselves in serving, defending and supporting the crown „ad retinendam coronam”.

The volume is decisively of biographical, prosopographical and genealogical nature. The source that serves as its basis combines traditional historical genres, occasionally with microphilological thoroughness. By being connected with the illustrious historical discourse of the Pázmány-research it presents how and in what measure the processus informativus, this unique and important sequential type of source of the Vatican, can be exploited and give an excess to the existing researches and Hungarian sources. Nonetheless, the perspectives that the Italian private archives can offer in order to make Hungarian history better known (and understood) are presented.

The possibility of the further scientific exploitation is primarily connected to the Pázmány-research, as well. The specified and modified data of certain careers and the family circumstances can be reflected in his literary work. It remains the task of the history of literature to re-read the works of Pázmány – following the method of Miklós Őry – and to find bases along newer biographical results, or even to raise objections. The same is held to our observations concerning his literary work.

The analysis of the archive of the Pázmány–Tholdy family, revealed through research, their documents’ richness in data and the nature of the historian’s narrative, which relies upon those data and radically diverges from the text of the verbal-analysis proves that the process and the family archive practically “talk at cross purposes”. The one does not cover the lack of the other. Moreover, they complement each other. The famous phrase of László Fejérpataky: “The history of Hungary cannot be written without the knowledge of the archives of Italy and mainly the Vatican”, is current, however, not primarily due to the loss of data in Hungary, since that is irrecoverable. The phrase is relevant, because the archives of Italy (could) preserve such data for us that can be unreachable in Hungary even under ideal source conditions.

The volume is of interest of both the professional and wider circle of readers due to the revealment of primary sources and the conducted basic research. The testimony of the witnesses (for example of such well-known persons that Bálint Lépes and Lőrinc Ferenczffy) of September 1616 about Pázmány and his career to the archbishopric chair can be read in the volume also in Hungarian translation. Their words reveal the family of Pázmány, his catholicisation, his studies in Kolozsvár and his missionary and polemical activity. In the presentation of Pázmány’s role appears the world of transition from Reformation to Counter Reformation from a so far unknown aspect. The documents of the newly revealed Pázmány-Tholdy family archives lead us to the ambiance of Várad of the 1570s and 1580s. The everyday life of the nobles of this country of Calvinist majority, that had been since some decades already Protestant, comes alive due to the documents of the Protestant Pázmánys and the Catholic Tholdys. That milieu, in which Pázmány lived as a child and returned occasionally as a student of Kolozsvár before at the age of 18 he left forever his fatherland. The ancestors of the Pázmánys, the lawsuits between members of the family, the masterfulness and gaining of estates of the ambitious father, Miklós, and the financial conditions of the family are also outlined. In connection with the investigation of a murder case the decaying estate and the inhabitants of Panasz, who were mostly the serfs of the Pázmánys, evoke the world of the village. The most interesting Hungarian language sources can be found in the Appendix in their full length. In addition to the genealogical, biographical and family history data they prove us also that the religious movements of the mid-16th century left the late-medieval, humanist-legal culture of Várad fundamentally untouched and they did not bring any basic change in the family strategies motivated by the possibilities of social rise.

A kötet meghatározóan biográfiai, proszopográfiai és genealógiai jellegű. Az alapjául szolgáló forrás természetéből fakadóan hagyományos történeti műfajokat ötvöz, esetenként mikrofilológiai alapossággal. A Pázmány-kutatás nagy múltú történeti diskurzusához kapcsolódva azt mutatja be, hogy a kánoni kivizsgálási eljárás jegyzőkönyve, e sajátos, fontos szeriális vatikáni forrástípus hogyan és milyen mértékben hasznosítható, ad többletet az eddigi vizsgálatokhoz és a hazai forrásokhoz. Valamint hogy az olaszországi magánlevéltárak milyen perspektívákat kínálnak a magyar történelem jobb megismerése (és megértése) terén.

A további hasznosítás lehetősége is elsődlegesen a Pázmány-kutatáshoz kapcsolódik. A pontosított, módosított életpályaadatok, családi körülmények visszatükröződhetnek irodalmi alkotásaiban. Az irodalomtörténet feladata marad, hogy Őry Miklós módszerét követve újraolvassa Pázmány műveit és támpontokat találjon az újabb biográfiai eredmények mentén, netalán ellenvetéseket támasszon. Ugyanez áll az írói munkásságára vonatkozó megfigyelésekre.

A Pázmány–Tholdy család kutatás során feltárt archívumának feldolgozása, iratainak adatgazdagsága, a rá alapuló történészi narratívának a jegyzőkönyv-elemzés szövegétől gyökeresen eltérő jellege azt bizonyítja, hogy a jegyzőkönyv és a családi levéltár gyakorlatilag „elbeszélnek egymás mellett”. Az egyik nem feledtetheti a másik hiányát. Sokkal inkább kiegészítik egymást. Fejérpataky László híres mondása: „Egyáltalában Magyarország történelmét az olaszországi, s első sorban a vatikáni levéltárak ismerete nélkül megírni nem lehet”, következésképpen nem az itthoni adatpusztulás miatt érvényes elsősorban. Ezt semmi nem pótolhatja. Sokkal inkább amiatt, mert Itália archívumai olyan információkat őriznek, őrizhetnek meg számunkra, melyek idehaza még ideális forrásviszonyok között is jószerével elérhetetlenek lennének.

A kötet, eredeti forrásfeltárása, alapkutatás jellege mellett nemcsak a szakmai, hanem a szélesebb olvasói kör érdeklődésére is számot tarthat. A Pázmányról, az érseki székig megtett életútról szóló 1616. szeptember végi tanúvallomások (például olyan ismert személyeké, mint Lépes Bálint, Ferenczffy Lőrinc) magyar fordításban is olvashatóak. A kortársak szavaiban megidéződik Pázmány családja, katolizálása, a kolozsvári tanulmányai, térítői, hitvitázó tevékenysége. Pázmány szerepének egykorú bemutatásában a reformáció/ellenreformáció átmenetének világa jelenik meg eddig ismeretlen tükörben. A családi levéltár, az szintén újonnan feltárt Pázmány–Tholdy-archívum iratai az 1570-es, -80-as évek Váradjának és környékének világába vezetnek el. Az ekkorra már egy-két évtizede protestáns, református többségű vidék középnemességének mindennapjai elevenednek meg a protestáns Pázmányok és a katolikus Tholdyak iratainak köszönhetően. Az a miliő, melyben Pázmány Péter gyerekként élt, kolozsvári diákként vissza-visszatért, mielőtt 18 évesen végleg elhagyta volna szülőföldjét. Feltárulnak előttünk a Pázmányok ősei, a családon belüli perek, a feltörekvő apa, Miklós birtokszerzései, hatalmaskodásai, a család anyagi viszonyai. Egy gyilkossági eset nyomozása kapcsán a hamarosan elpusztuló birtok, Panasz lakói, többségükben a Pázmányok jobbágyai idézik meg a falu világát. Az érdekesebb, magyar nyelvű források a függelékben teljes szövegükben is megtalálhatóak. A genealógiai, életrajzi és családtörténeti adatokon túlmenően azt is bizonyítják számunkra, hogy a 16. század derekának vallási mozgalmai alapjaiban érintetlenül hagyták Várad késő-középkori humanista-jogi jellegű kultúráját, és a felemelkedésre törekvő családi stratégiákban nem hoztak alapvető változást.

A tudomány és az oktatás szolgálatában A tudomány és az oktatás szolgálatában Buday, a római koros régész Buday Árpád erdélyi ró-mai koros régészeti kutatá-sai mindössze egy rövid, de annál intenzívebb időszakra terjednek ki. Legkorábbi tu-dományos publikációi a római felirattanhoz kötődnek, me-lyekben főként az Erdély terü-letéről előkerült feliratos em-lékeket közölte le. 1912-ben pedig megjelentette a Római felirattan című kézikönyvét. A Pósta Béla által vezetett kolozsvári régészeti iskolában a római limes tanulmányozása kiemelt szerepet kapott. Ennek megszervezésével, gyakorlati lebonyolításával és kivitelezésé-vel Buday Árpádot bízták meg. Akárcsak Torma Károly, Buday Árpád is Dacia északnyu-gati limesszakaszával kezdte meg a munkát. 1911 júliusában bejárta a limes Sebesvár (Kolozs megye) és Tihó (Szilágy me-gye) közötti szakaszát, majd az ókori Porolissum (Mojgrád, Szilágy megye) környékét vizsgálta át a római határvédelem szempontjából. Bár megfigyelései sok esetben helyesnek bi-zonyultak, a meszesi töltésrendszerről a későbbi kutatások egyértelműen bebizonyították, hogy az nem volt folytonos, hanem számos őrtoronyból állt. Buday vitathatatlan érdemei között szerepel azonban, hogy kísérletet tett a limesrendszer relatív időrendjének megállapítására, és az erődítési rendszer elemeinek pontos megfigyelései is az ő nevéhez fűződnek. Buday fő életcélját a teljes daciai limes kutatásában látta. Behatóbban foglalkozott Dacia délkeleti határának elméleti problémáival, a daciai határvédelem többlépcsős, fokozatos kiépítésével, valamint a Dacia és Pannonia között lévő Duna-Tisza köze déli végében elhelyezkedő római töltésrendszer beazonosítá-sával is. Ásatási jelentései és eredményeinek közlései alapos, rend-szeres és mai szemmel nézve is korszerű feltárásokról árulkodnak. Már másodéves hallga-tóként bekapcsolódott a Pósta Béla által újjá-szervezett régészeti intézetben és a ré-giségtárban folyó munkákba. Az évek során mestere "jobb-keze" lett, és a tudomá-nyos ranglétra szinte minden lépcsőfokát kijárta. 1905-ben házasodtak össze menyasszonyával, Hilf Margittal. A családban "Édinek" becézett felesége hűsé-ges társa volt Budaynak, biztos, harmonikus családi hátteret teremtett számára. Házasságukból négy gyermek született, köztük az ismert grafikus-és fametszőművész, György. Erdély 1918-as román megszállása a Buday család életét is gyökeresen megváltoztatta. Pósta halálát követően, 1919-ben átvette az intézet és a múzeum irányítását, azonban még ebben az évben letartóztatták. A hadbíróság-bár az ügyész a halálra ítélésére tett indítványt-fél év után felmentette. Bu-day Árpádot alacsonyabb beosztásban, de visszavették az in-tézetbe, viszont addigi munkája teljesen ellehetetlenült. Budayt 1924 májusában nevezték ki a Kolozsvárról áttele-pült szegedi egyetem Régészeti Intézetének élére, és még eb-ben az évben át is költözött a családjával a dél-alföldi városba, ahol haláláig vezette az intézetet, de emellett számos egyete-mi tisztséget is betöltött (így a bölcsészkar dékánja is volt). Bu-day kiemelt fontosságúnak tartotta, hogy felkeltse tudománya iránt a nagyközönség figyelmét. Ezért számos ismeretterjesztő előadást tartott, főként a szegedi évei során. A Buday házaspár számára történész fiuk, Kálmán 1936-os tragikus halála hatal-mas csapást jelentett. Feltehetőleg ez is hozzájárult Buday be-tegségének felgyorsulásához, aki végül 1937-ben, 58 évesen, hosszas szenvedés után hunyt el Szegeden. A latin szerzők a limes szót a megjelölt vagy megerősített határszakasz megnevezésére használták. A modern kor történészei e kifeje-zést a Római Birodalom határvé-delmi rendszerével tették egyenértékűvé.
