This article raises the need for (Spanish) ethnomusicology to replace rigid nineteenth century approaches with renewed anthropological and sociological concepts and analytical tools, Through the notion of “social relevance,” the author responds to this need and advocates for the
study of horizontal influence (dynamic, meaningful), rather than vertical roots (ancestral, quasi sacred) in a musical repertoire. “Social relevance” would be the academic opposite to “cultural paternity” (as ethnic ascription), prioritizing the importance that a song, instrument, or dance has for a community in a specific moment. Therefore, the main task of an ethnomusicologist is to understand the musical life of a society, because the relevance does not depend on music itself, but on its context. Consequently, the concept of social relevance rejects perceptions of popular music studies as marginal, and instead accepts the study of popular music as a discipline that deserves full scholarly attention, eliminating mythologized hierarchies of elite groups. The article discusses how social relevance manifests in three interrelated dimensions: meaning, or how a musical piece is perceived; the uses to which it is put; and its social functions. These analyses apply to different genres such as opera, jazz, rock, folk, classical, and avant-garde music, and point out the universal attributes they all share according to the principle of their

El característico modelo dicotómico de Occidente siempre ha entendido las cosas y a las personas en relación de oposición. Por una parte, el mundo de la materia inerte y, por la otra, el de los seres vivos. Uno de los aspectos que resulta interesante de esta distinción es que el cuerpo, entendido
como res extensa por el cartesianismo, ha quedado entre estos dos polos y asume fácilmente la
categoría de objeto, como en el caso de los cadáveres o de los fragmentos corporales. En no pocas ocasiones, la exhibición de restos humanos tiene que ver con la práctica del racismo. En este artículo, me sirvo de la noción deleuziana de ensamblaje para analizar la centralidad

One of the facts that characterizes the
years of conflict in Catalonia since 2017
is the proliferation of visual elements on
the street, which reflect the confrontation
with the Spanish state such as flags,
messages in the form of banners or
painted on the walls, and other visual
elements of protest. Beyond the
symbolic value of these visual elements,
a theoretical posthumanist approach
of this social activism in public spaces
leads us to apply a postanthropocentric,
non-dual and relational perspective.
In this way, without forgetting the
importance of discourse, meaning
and structure, attention is focused on
affects, intensities and the event in its
deleuzian sense. The unit of analysis is
not the visual elements or people but the
assemblages, relational fields in which
affects, feelings and emotions emerge.
The space and the elements that make
up the space are not misunderstood
as something disassociated from the
subject but rather understood in terms
of emplacement (Howes 2005), that

In this article I present some ideas related to the posthumanist
thinking concerning bodies. Trying to understand the reality by
overcoming conceptual schemes of Cartesian dualism, anthropocentrism and biocentrism, the post-humanist notion of the body
is based on different presuppositions from those of humanism.
It does not conceive the body as a mere support of the mind but
instead departs from the embodiment concept, but understanding
this idea in a wider form as it was originally formulated by
Thomas Csordas. The body is conceptualized as an assemblage
of different elements which only becomes understandable through
intra-actions (Karen Barad) with everything that surrounds
it, unlike the classical vision that considers the body as a unified
organic whole separated from its surroundings. The body does
not end at the skin (Donna Haraway). In this way, the boundaries
of the body, so clearly established by epistemological structures,
which are profoundly anthropocentric and based on individual/
society and mind/body dualities are blurred in the conceptual framework
of posthumanism. Within the characteristic non dualist
ontology of posthumanism what counts are relations not entities.
The body is understood rather than in terms of what it is, according
to its capacity of action and interaction (Gilles Deleuze).

One of the most interesting subjects related to research on hybridization in
music is the study of its semantic implications in a given socio-cultural
context. It is clear that hybridization, in one way or another, is an inherent
process in all kinds of music. For this reason it is important not only to
observe the origins and development of this phenomenon, but also to pay due
attention to what hybridization refers to on the emic level, i.e. hybridization as
a bearer of meanings, elucidating which meanings are associated by social
agents to these kinds of processes. This article focuses on this important
question and presents some general reflections on the meanings of
hybridization through concrete examples from the Catalan musical tradition.

Los "Goigs" están constituidos por un folleto suelto que contiene un himno laudatorio dedicado a la Virgen, a un santo o a otras advocaciones religiosas, así como una ilustración de mayor o menor tamaño, procedente, la mayoria de las veces, de un grabado de madera. El canto en comunidad de este himno impreso forma parte de la liturgia popular tradicional. En el caso de las audiciones convencionales, el ritual, en su calidad de metamensaje, nos dice cómo debemos entender aquello que está sucediendo en el escenario, pero las músicas ambientales se nos aparecen desprovistas de todo ritual. Este artigo trata da problemática da relação entre gênero e música. Sabemos que a música como meio de comunicação contribui também para a construção social da realidade; se nos interessamos pela música como fenômeno sócio-cultural, então o aspecto de gênero constitui uma dimensão que não pode ser ignorada. Ao longo deste artigo, apresentarei alguns dados relativos a uma pesquisa tipo survey realizada com jovens barcelonenses durante o outono de 1995. Entre os diferentes objetivos da pesquisa buscava-se obter informações sobre o significado e funções da música na sociedade catalã, com algumas questões orientadas para tratar do papel que desempenha a música nas relações de gênero. Concretamente, os resultados da amostra nos aportam dados sobre o uso da música como estratégia de identidade de gênero, assim como sobre as funções que pode exercer a música como expressão e ao mesmo tempo recurso de manutenção das relações de gênero, que em nossa sociedade caracterizam-se pela sua natureza...

This challenge is formulated in terms of “humanities in transition,” that is, their approach and articulation in the face of the changes they must undergo to achieve the social weight that, due to their intrinsic relevance, should correspond to them. Faced with these situations that would demand a reinforcement in research and dissemination in diverse aspects of the humanities, from multiple perspectives, paradoxically an adverse panorama is drawn for the development and dissemination of humanistic knowledge, which concerns different factors. Some are related to the consideration of the area of knowledge itself, its organization within the scientific system, the questioning of its own limits, and the interaction with another knowledge. Considering current transition scenarios does not mean having to abandon old objectives, but it adds to the work conducted new objects of study closely related to current reality, such as: the informational revolution; the relations with the ecosystem and the environmental crisis; globalization; the intensification of human mobility and migration flows; the growing economic and social inequality; the frictions derived from the articulation of collective identities; the decolonization of discourses; demographic dynamics; integration of technological advances; and viability and support for alternative models of society.Peer reviewe

En els darrers anys, observem un interes creixent per tot el que envolta la idea de cultura. A mes del fet de que cada cop son mes les publicacions i estudis teorics que presten atencio a aquest concepte i a tota la problematica que implica, nomes cal recordar l'ampli resso que va experimentar anys enrera aquell controvertit llibre del conservador nord-america Samuel P. Huntington, The clash of civilizations and the remaking of world order, o el fet de que la ciutat de Barcelona estigui preparant amb una considerable assignacio de recursos economics el Forum de les Cultures. Tal com afirma Terry Eagleton, "... la cultura adquireix importancia intel⋅lectual quan es transforma en una forca amb la qual s'ha de comptar politicament"1, i es que, de fet, "el debat sobre la cultura ha tornat a ser politic"2.

The author critizises the concept of ethnicity current in spanish studies on traditional music and develops - as an alternative category - the concept of social relevance. The social relevance of a determined music production in a concret socio-cultural situation appears in the interaction between significance, uses and its fonctional implications. We speak about the significance of a music, when it is possible to establish an identity connection between it and a cognitive category of a social dimension. Thus, we can associate heavy metal with youth and flamenco with Andalusia. Speaking about the use of a music, it seems pertinent to introduce the concept of Rmusical event"E1; as the realization of a musical act in a determined time and space. Indeeed, the type and the number of musical events will give us always good information about their use (ludic, commercial, religious, etc), and, thus, about their social relevance.
